BULLDOG STORYLINES

• Louisiana Tech looks to bounce back on Wednesday night as the Bulldogs play host to Stephen F. Austin at 6 p.m. inside the Thomas Assembly Center on Karl Malone Court.

• LA Tech is accustomed to bouncing back from a loss, having suffered back-to-back defeats only four times over the last three-plus seasons (20-4 record following a loss during this span). Even more impressive, the Bulldogs are 42-1 over the last decade when playing at home immediately following a road/neutral site loss.

• The Bulldogs had their five-game winning streak come to an end with a 92-65 loss at Wyoming. A nine-minute stretch in the first half was the difference in the game as the Cowboys went on a 23-5 run. LA Tech gave up a season-high 32 made field goals (14 of which were three-pointers).

• Despite the lopsided loss, LA Tech did make 10 three-pointers in the matchup against Wyoming. The Bulldogs currently rank second in C-USA and 24th in the country in three-pointers per game at 9.9. They have made at least nine threes in seven of their nine games (are averaging 11.4 made threes over their last five games).

• David Green had his breakout game this season, coming off the bench against the Cowboys to score a career-tying 21 points. In only 16 minutes played, the forward went 7-of-9 from the field and 4-of-5 from beyond the arc. He became the fifth Bulldog this season to score at least 20 points in a single game.

• Despite an off-shooting night at Wyoming, Cobe Williams continues to pace the team offensively with an average of 17.3 points per game while shooting 50 percent from the field, 35 percent from three, and 75 percent from the foul line. He is one of 24 players in the country averaging at least 17 points while shooting these percentages.

• Jordan Crawford continues to shine as a freshman, having registered a team-high 40 assists to only 20 turnovers this season. He is one of only three freshman in the country with at least 40 assists as well as a 2.00 assist/turnover ratio.

A LOUISIANA TECH WIN WOULD...

• Be LA Tech’s 32nd consecutive win at home against a non-conference opponent. The Bulldogs set the program record at 31 in their win over Southern on Dec. 2 (have not lost at home to a non-conference opponent since Dec. 12, 2017).

• Be LA Tech’s 21st straight win at home when coming off a road/neutral site loss. The Bulldogs have not suffered a defeat following a road/neutral site loss since Jan. 4, 2018.

• Be LA Tech’s eighth straight victory at home in a nationally televised game. Since 2013, the Bulldogs are 11-1 in national TV games (ESPN/2/U and CBS Sports Network) inside the Thomas Assembly Center.

• Improve LA Tech’s record to 8-2 when wearing its alternate red uniforms at home. The Bulldogs are 6-1 all-time in “Red Out” games, an annual promotion that started in 2015.

HESTER

HEAD COACH | 1ST SEASON

Louisiana Tech President Dr. Les Guice and Vice President/Director of Athletics Dr. Eric A. Wood introduced Talvin Hester as the 19th head men’s basketball coach in program history.

Hester, who has 20 years of coaching experience, is no stranger to Ruston after spending three seasons (2018-21) as an assistant coach with the Bulldogs. Most recently, he spent one season as an assistant coach at Texas Tech where he helped the third-seeded Red Raiders reach the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament.

While in Lubbock this past season working under new head coach and Associated Press Big 12 Coach of the Year Mark Adams, Texas Tech put together a 27-win season including victories over Montana State and Notre Dame to help the program make its fifth Sweet 16 appearance in program history.

TTU, which had five All-Big 12 selections, was ranked as high as No. 9 in the country and reached the Big 12 championship final for just the second time in program history. The Red Raiders had the No. 1 ranked defense in the country (per Kenpom.com) while limiting opponents to only 60.2 points per game, holding teams to 38.2 percent shooting and forcing 15.9 turnovers per contest.

During his three successful years at LA Tech under Eric Konkol, Hester helped the Bulldogs register three winning seasons of 20-plus victories. The 2020-21 season saw the ‘Dogs register a 24-8 overall record while claiming a Conference USA West Division title and a third place finish in the National Invitation Tournament. The team received an at-large berth to play in the NIT for the first time since 2015 and became just the second team in program history to make the Final Four.

LA Tech, which had the highest-rated defense in C-USA ranking top 30 in the country in field goal percentage defense and three-point field goal percentage defense, upset Ole Miss in the first round, defeated league foe Western Kentucky in the quarterfinals and won a 76-74 thriller over No. 1 overall seed Colorado State in the Final Four consolation game.

In his second season in 2019-20, the Bulldogs registered a 22-8 overall record during the regular slate, but the team did not have a chance at postseason play with the Conference USA and NCAA/NIT Tournaments being canceled due to the public health threat of COVID-19. The 22 wins ended up being the most victories of any Conference USA team and of any Louisiana Division I team. The Bulldogs also recorded a 13-5 league record, finishing in a tie for second place.

In his first year with the ‘Dogs, Hester helped the team to 20 victories. Eight of the 20 victories came against teams who also produced 20-win seasons, the most in program history. One of those came in the season opener at Wichita State as the Bulldogs shocked the Shockers, handing them only their fourth loss in their last 76 games at home.

Hester helped coach All-Conference USA selections DaQuan Bracey (First Team), Kenneth Lofton, Jr. (Third Team and C-USA Freshman of the Year) and Isaiah Crawford (Third Team) as well as Cobe Williams who was a member of the C-USA All-Defensive Team.

Along with stops at Texas Tech and Louisiana Tech, Hester spent the majority of his coaching career in the south, especially in the Lone Star State. He spent time at Oral Roberts, Houston, Texas State, Stephen F. Austin, San Jose State, Prairie View A&M, Texas College, Texas Wesleyan and North Lake College during his career.

Hester began his coaching career in 2002 at North Lake College in Irving, Texas. His coaching resume also includes a stop with the Texas Rim Rockers of the United States Basketball League as an assistant coaching intern and the Dallas Mustangs AAU team for one season.

As a student-athlete, Hester played at Dallas Christian College during the 1996-97 season. He received his bachelor’s degree in interdisciplinary studies from Texas Wesleyan in 2003.

WHAT THEY ARE SAYING ABOUT TALVIN HESTER

MARK ADAMS, TEXAS TECH HEAD COACH

“Coach Hester was invaluable to the success of our program last year. I have no doubt that his 20 years of college experience and extraordinary passion for LA Tech make shim a perfect fit to lead the program.”

ERIC KONKOL, TULSA HEAD COACH

“Talvin has been a part of tremendous programs across many levels of basketball during his career. He was an integral part of ours at LA Tech as a coach, mentor to the players, and member of the community. Talvin has a terrific basketball mind, is an outstanding recruiter, and is a winner. I am very happy for Talvin, Jamieka, and Rhyan on their return to Ruston.”

alvin brooks, lamar head coach

“Talvin Hester is the complete package. He possesses a great understanding of the game, is a tremendous teacher and recruiter, leader of people and has the ability to develop special relationships with his players. He is a wonderful role model for young men and a winner.”

kelvin sampson, houston head coach

“This is a grand slam hire for Louisiana Tech. Talvin’s work ethic, his unbelievable communication skills, his temperament, his connectivity with the players, it was just a matter of time before he became a head coach. I applaud LA Tech for this hire.”

paul mills, oral roberts head coach

“Talvin’s experience, knowledge, and genuine love of people provide a unique combination for a leader in college basketball. Talvin is the total package. He is a winner in every facet. His handprints are all over each program he has been involved with as an assistant and he has left each of those programs better due to his involvement. Great things are in store for Louisiana Tech as the Bulldogs are in great hands.”

armoni brooks, nba guard

“Coach Hester is a great coach but an even better person. I have known him for years and he cares about his players off the court almost more than on the court. He is going to make sure his team plays hard and plays together while making sure that he teaches life lessons off the court.”

RED OUT GAMES

The Bulldogs donned the alternate red uniforms for the first time in 2015. And ever since, they have had the annual “Red Out” game.

LA Tech is 6-1 all-time in “Red Out” games (did not have this promotion during the 2020-21 season due to COVID attendance restrictions).

ISAIAH GETTIN’ BACK TO OLD SELF

Jan. 11, 2020. El Paso, Texas. Nov. 15, 2021. Ruston, Louisiana.

Two days that Isaiah Crawford will never forget. Because on both of those days, he tore the ACL in his left knee (one of two known active players in the country to still be playing after two season-ending knee injuries).

After recovering from the first season-ending knee injury, he bounced back to have an All-Conference USA season (Third Team). He looks to have the same bounce back this season.

Through eight games, Crawford is averaging 12.1 points per game while shooting 51 percent from the field, 39 percent from three, and 84 percent from the foul line..

He has scored in double figures four times, including a season-high 22 points at Samford, the most since Feb. 5, 2021 at North Texas.

“threeston” willis

Keaston ... aka “Threeston” ... Willis made his presence known from beyond the three-point line in his first year with the Bulldogs last season. He ended up ranking in the top 50 in the country in three-point field goal percentage (39.2%) and three-pointers made (93). His 93 threes was the second most in program history in a single season.

He is already off to a good pace this season, having knocked down 24 three-pointers through the first nine games.

The man has been a weapon from deep his entire collegiate career at Incarnate Word/LA Tech.

IMMEDIATE IMPACT FOR FROSH

Jordan Crawford had only one scholarship offer from a Division I college basketball program ... and that was the home town school of Louisiana Tech.

The true freshman who won four state championships at nearby Simsboro High School has made an immediate impact for the Bulldogs.

He has started the last six games, and currently leads the team in total assists (40) and ranks second in total steals (17).

He is currently one of only six freshman in the country to have at least 40 assists and 15 steals so far this season.

MTE SUCCESS

Practically every season, Louisiana Tech plays in a multi-team event. And practically every season, the Bulldogs go updated in said events.

LA Tech went 3-0 in the Samford MTE this season, winning road games at Alabama A&M and Samford plus a neutral site victory over UT Southern.

Over the last decade, the ‘Dogs are a combined 31-6 in multi-team events.

BABY J NAMED C-USA FOW

After making a big splash in his Bulldog debut, Jordan Crawford (aka Baby J) was voted as the Conference USA Freshman of the Week.

He saw 20 minutes of action in the season opener against Mississippi College, registering 15 points, three assists, and three steals.

He became the seventh Bulldog in program history to be named C-USA FOW and only the second to win the award in week one.

LA Tech got in some extra work this summer in preparation for the 2022-23 season under first-year head coach Talvin Hester as the Bulldogs went on a summer tour to Puerto Rico (in previous years the Bulldogs have gone to the Bahamas (2014) and Costa Rica (2018)).

The ‘Dogs spent six days on the island where they toured the capital city of San Juan, enjoyed paddle boarding, ziplining, down time at the pool and beach ... and three wins.

Kenneth Lofton, Jr. racked up several honors in his two seasons of playing Bully Ball with the Bulldogs prior to declaring for the NBA Draft.

• Two-time All-Conference USA

• Louisiana Major College Player of the Year

• NABC First Team All-District 11

• Naismith Trophy Midseason Team

• C-USA Freshman of the Year

Despite going undrafted, he ended up signing a two-way contract with the Memphis Grizzlies where he made the opening day roster.

Junior was one of just 17 undrafted rookies to make an NBA opening day roster and became the first Bulldog since Erik McCree (2018 with Utah Jazz) to play in an NBA game.

back-to-back 24-win seasons

After going 24-8 in 2020-21, the Bulldogs matched their win total in 2021-22 with an overall record of 24-10.

LA Tech is one of only 10 Division I teams in the country to have recorded at least 24 victories in each of the last two seasons.

ANOTHER 20-Piece

LA Tech put together yet another 20-win season. It marked the 28th time in program history of reaching 20 wins. The Bulldogs are one of just 18 teams in Division I to have won 20+ games in at least nine of the last 10 seasons.

In a college basketball world now littered with transfers, you do not see true freshmen make an immediate impact very often.

CRAWFORDS AND WILLIAMS

If you are seeing double with the last name on the jerseys, it is not you. Last season, the Bulldogs had a pair of Williams’ with Terran and Cobe. This season, there is the addition of having two Crawfords with Jordan and Isaiah.

They are just the 10th and 11th pair of Bulldogs to be on the roster at the same time with the same last name. This does mark the first time in program history that there are two sets of the same last name.

20-GAME LEAGUE SCHEDULE

With the departure of Southern Miss, Marshall, and Old Dominion to the Sun Belt, Conference USA went from a 14-team league to an 11team league.

As a result, the Bulldogs will take part in a 20game conference schedule for the first time in program history (had been an 18-game league schedule since 2014-15).

HOMETOWN KID

North Louisiana has seen its fair share of great basketball players. However, it is been rare to have a Bulldog from Louisiana Tech’s hometown of Ruston.

And for the first time since 2008, a Bulldog calls Ruston home in Jordan Crawford. The guard was a four-time state champion at nearbly Simsboro High School.

north carolina duo

The majority of Bulldogs have always hailed from the home state of Louisiana and the neighboring state of Texas. Of course, Florida has been a popular state to pick players from as well over the last decade or so.

This season though, the Bulldogs have the addition of Dravon Mangum and Quandre Bullock, both of whom are from North Carolina.

Prior to this season, there had been only two Bulldogs to have ever called North Carolina home. That has doubled this season.

non-conference success

The Bulldogs produce strong non-conference seasons year in and year out, having tallied at least nine wins in eight of the last 10 seasons.

About THE LUMBERJACKS

Stephen F. Austin has been up-and-down this season, winning three of its first four games followed by a stretch of losing three of four games. The Lumberjacks cracked the .500 barrier this past Sunday with a lopsided 103-40 victory at home against Paul Quinn.

SFA played in the Western Athletic Conference for the first season last year, claiming the WAC regular season title with a 14-4 league mark. The Lumberjacks were picked to finish third in the 2022-23 WAC preseason rankings behind Grand Canyon and New Mexico State.

Offensively, SFA ranks 28th in the country in field goal percentage at 47.4. Defensively, they excel at turning people over, ranking fourth in the country in forced TOs at 18.06 per game.

The Lumberjacks get contributions from everyone as seven different players average at least eight points per game. They are anchored by the trio of Sadaidriene Hall, Latrell Jossell, and Nigel Hawkins who average 12-13 points per game. Hall was was an All-WAC Preseason Second Team selection.

Wednesday will mark the 15th meeting alltime between LA Tech and Stephen F. Austin. The meetings have been scattered throughout the years, first playing in 1939. The two squads last played a home-and-home in 2017-18 with the road team winning both times.

The Bulldogs have won five of the last six meetings, including a 96-93 overtime victory in Nacogdoches in 2018.
