BULLDOG STORYLINES
• After a week-long Christmas break, Louisiana Tech returns to the hardwood on Thursday night when they host UTSA at 6 p.m. inside the Thomas Assembly Center on Karl Malone Court.
• LA Tech snapped its three-game losing skid in a big way, blowing out Jarvis Christian by a final score of 108-52 in their final non-conference game of the season. The Bulldogs exploded for 59 first-half points and then cruised in the second half to a triple-digit total that was the most scored by the program since 2017.
• The Bulldogs tied their season high with 12 steals in the win over Jarvis Christian. They have now registered double-digit steals in five of their last six games (six total this season), having already surpassed last season’s total of three games with 10+. The program record is 18 times set by the 2013-14 team.
• All nine Bulldogs that suited up scored with five of them reaching double-digit points -- Dravon Mangum (22), Isaiah Crawford (20), Terran Williams (15), Jordan Crawford (13), and Keaston Willis (10). For Mangum, it was a career-high 22 points while also making a career-high five three-pointers. He became the sixth Bulldog this season to register a 20-point scoring game.
• Jordan Crawford earned his second Conference USA Freshman of the Week honor after recording his first ever double-double with 13 points and a career-high 12 assists in the win over Jarvis Christian. The 12 dimes is the most by any C-USA player this season and tied for the 14th most in the country in a single game (most by any freshman).
• Cobe Williams has been the anchor for the Bulldogs both offensively and defensively this season. He is averaging 17.9 points per game, having led the team in scoring five times, to go along with 4.2 assists per game. In the 10 games he has played in, he has scored or assisted on 38 percent of the made field goals. He is also averaging a teambest 2.80 steals per game, making him one of only four playes in the country averaging at least 17 points, four assists and two steals per game.
• LA Tech looks to avoid an 0-2 start to Conference USA play. The Bulldogs dropped their league opener at UTEP, falling 60-55 in El Paso. In their nine previous seasons in C-USA, the ‘Dogs have started 0-2 only once (2017-18).
A LOUISIANA TECH WIN WOULD...
• Be LA Tech’s fifth straight victory over UTSA. It would match the longest winning streak over the Roadrunners for the Bulldogs in series history as well as match the longest current winning streak over a C-USA opponent (have won five straight over Rice).
• Be LA Tech’s fifth straight victory in its first home Conference USA game. The Bulldogs are 8-1 all-time in their first home C-USA games (lone loss was to UTSA in 2017-18).
• Be LA Tech’s 70th home win in C-USA action. The Bulldogs are 69-11 all-time in C-USA games inside the Thomas Assembly Center (have won 30 of the last 36).

HEAD COACH | 1ST SEASON
Louisiana Tech President Dr. Les Guice and Vice President/Director of Athletics Dr. Eric A. Wood introduced Talvin Hester as the 19th head men’s basketball coach in program history.
Hester, who has 20 years of coaching experience, is no stranger to Ruston after spending three seasons (2018-21) as an assistant coach with the Bulldogs. Most recently, he spent one season as an assistant coach at Texas Tech where he helped the third-seeded Red Raiders reach the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament.
While in Lubbock this past season working under new head coach and Associated Press Big 12 Coach of the Year Mark Adams, Texas Tech put together a 27-win season including victories over Montana State and Notre Dame to help the program make its fifth Sweet 16 appearance in program history.
TTU, which had five All-Big 12 selections, was ranked as high as No. 9 in the country and reached the Big 12 championship final for just the second time in program history. The Red Raiders had the No. 1 ranked defense in the country (per Kenpom.com) while limiting opponents to only 60.2 points per game, holding teams to 38.2 percent shooting and forcing 15.9 turnovers per contest.
During his three successful years at LA Tech under Eric Konkol, Hester helped the Bulldogs register three winning seasons of 20-plus victories. The 2020-21 season saw the ‘Dogs register a 24-8 overall record while claiming a Conference USA West Division title and a third place finish in the National Invitation Tournament. The team received an at-large berth to play in the NIT for the first time since 2015 and became just the second team in program history to make the Final Four.
LA Tech, which had the highest-rated defense in C-USA ranking top 30 in the country in field goal percentage defense and three-point field goal percentage defense, upset Ole Miss in the first round, defeated league foe Western Kentucky in the quarterfinals and won a 76-74 thriller over No. 1 overall seed Colorado State in the Final Four consolation game.
In his second season in 2019-20, the Bulldogs registered a 22-8 overall record during the regular slate, but the team did not have a chance at postseason play with the Conference USA and NCAA/NIT Tournaments being canceled due to the public health threat of COVID-19. The 22 wins ended up being the most victories of any Conference USA team and of any Louisiana Division I team. The Bulldogs also recorded a 13-5 league record, finishing in a tie for second place.
In his first year with the ‘Dogs, Hester helped the team to 20 victories. Eight of the 20 victories came against teams who also produced 20-win seasons, the most in program history. One of those came in the season opener at Wichita State as the Bulldogs shocked the Shockers, handing them only their fourth loss in their last 76 games at home.
Hester helped coach All-Conference USA selections DaQuan Bracey (First Team), Kenneth Lofton, Jr. (Third Team and C-USA Freshman of the Year) and Isaiah Crawford (Third Team) as well as Cobe Williams who was a member of the C-USA All-Defensive Team.
Along with stops at Texas Tech and Louisiana Tech, Hester spent the majority of his coaching career in the south, especially in the Lone Star State. He spent time at Oral Roberts, Houston, Texas State, Stephen F. Austin, San Jose State, Prairie View A&M, Texas College, Texas Wesleyan and North Lake College during his career.
Hester began his coaching career in 2002 at North Lake College in Irving, Texas. His coaching resume also includes a stop with the Texas Rim Rockers of the United States Basketball League as an assistant coaching intern and the Dallas Mustangs AAU team for one season.
As a student-athlete, Hester played at Dallas Christian College during the 1996-97 season. He received his bachelor’s degree in interdisciplinary studies from Texas Wesleyan in 2003.

His handprints are all over each program he has been involved with as an assistant and he has left each of those programs better due to his involvement. Great things are in store for Louisiana Tech as the Bulldogs are in great hands.”
armoni brooks, nba guard
“Coach Hester is a great coach but an even better person. I have known him for years and he cares about his players off the court almost more than on the court. He is going to make sure his team plays hard and plays together while making sure that he teaches life lessons off the court.”

ISAIAH GETTIN’ BACK TO OLD SELF
Jan. 11, 2020. El Paso, Texas. Nov. 15, 2021. Ruston, Louisiana.
Two days that Isaiah Crawford will never forget. Because on both of those days, he tore the ACL in his left knee (one of two known active players in the country to still be playing after two season-ending knee injuries).
After recovering from the first season-ending knee injury, he bounced back to have an All-Conference USA season (Third Team). He looks to have the same bounce back this season.
Through 11 games, Crawford is averaging 12.5 points per game while shooting 53 percent from the field, 38 percent from three, and 80 percent from the foul line..
He has scored in double figures six times, including a season-high 22 points at Samford, the most since Feb. 5, 2021 at North Texas.
“threeston” willis
Keaston ... aka “Threeston” ... Willis made his presence known from beyond the three-point line in his first year with the Bulldogs last season. He ended up ranking in the top 50 in the country in three-point field goal percentage (39.2%) and three-pointers made (93). His 93 threes was the second most in program history in a single season.
He is already off to a good pace this season, having knocked down a team-high 29 three-pointers through 12 games.
The man has been a weapon from deep his entire collegiate career at UIW/LA Tech.

IMMEDIATE IMPACT FOR FROSH
Jordan Crawford had only one scholarship offer from a Division I college basketball program ... and that was the home town school of Louisiana Tech.
The true freshman who won four state championships at nearby Simsboro High School has made an immediate impact for the Bulldogs.
He has played in all 12 games while starting the last nine, and currently leads the team in total assists (56) and is third in total steals (22).
He is currently one of only three freshman in the country to have at least 50 assists and 20 steals so far this season (Judah Mintz -- Syracuse and Jaden Clayton -- Maine).
BENCH POINTS
Scoring depth has been a plus for the Bulldogs this season as the bench is averaging 28.7 points per game, which ranks third in Conference USA and top 50 in the country.
This bench scoring average currently ranks as the second best in program history over the last 30 years.
2012-13 30.6 bench points per game
2022-23 28.7 bench points per game
2013-14 28.2 bench points per game

Dec. 26, 2022
Jordan Crawford (aka Baby J) was named C-USA Freshman of the Week after recording a double-double with 13 points and a career-high 12 assists versus Jarvis Christian. He also tallied four rebounds and four steals in the win.
In doing so, he became just the fourth Bulldog in program history to receive C-USA FOW honors multiple times.

After making a big splash in his Bulldog debut, Jordan Crawford was voted as the Conference USA Freshman of the Week in week one.
He saw 20 minutes of action in the season opener against Mississippi College, registering 15 points, three assists, and three steals.
He became the seventh Bulldog in program history to be named C-USA FOW and only the second to win the award in week one.

Talvin Hester picked up his first ever win as head coach in the season opener as the Bulldogs defeated the Choctaws of Mississippi College, 78-61.
He became the third straight LA Tech HC to win the season opener and the seventh straight to win their home opener.

• Two-time All-Conference USA
• Louisiana Major College Player of the Year
• NABC First Team All-District 11

• C-USA Freshman of the Year
Despite going undrafted, he ended up signing a two-way contract with the Memphis Grizzlies where he made the opening day roster.

back-to-back 24-win seasons
After going 24-8 in 2020-21, the Bulldogs matched their win total in 2021-22 with an overall record of 24-10.
LA Tech is one of only 10 Division I teams in the country to have recorded at least 24 victories in each of the last two seasons.

CRAWFORDS AND WILLIAMS
If you are seeing double with the last name on the jerseys, it is not you. Last season, the Bulldogs had a pair of Williams’ with Terran and Cobe. This season, there is the addition of having two Crawfords with Jordan and Isaiah.
They are just the 10th and 11th pair of Bulldogs to be on the roster at the same time with the same last name. This does mark the first time in program history that there are two sets of the same last name.
20-GAME LEAGUE SCHEDULE
With the departure of Southern Miss, Marshall, and Old Dominion to the Sun Belt, Conference USA went from a 14-team league to an 11team league.
As a result, the Bulldogs will take part in a 20game conference schedule for the first time in program history (had been an 18-game league schedule since 2014-15).
HOMETOWN KID
North Louisiana has seen its fair share of great basketball players. However, it is been rare to have a Bulldog from Louisiana Tech’s hometown of Ruston.
And for the first time since 2008, a Bulldog calls Ruston home in Jordan Crawford. The guard was a four-time state champion at nearbly Simsboro High School.
north carolina duo
The majority of Bulldogs have always hailed from the home state of Louisiana and the neighboring state of Texas. Of course, Florida has been a popular state to pick players from as well over the last decade or so.
This season though, the Bulldogs have the addition of Dravon Mangum and Quandre Bullock, both of whom are from North Carolina.
Prior to this season, there had been only two Bulldogs to have ever called North Carolina home. That has doubled this season.
non-conference success
The Bulldogs produce strong non-conference regular seasons year in and year out, having tallied at least seven wins in the last 15 seasons.
During this span, LA Tech has now played exactly 200 non-conference regular season games and compiled a 141-59 record (70.5 winning percentage).

The Bulldogs victory over USM on Jan. 13, 2022 turned out to be their 100th C-USA victory. It took them only 145 games to get there, the second fastest of any team in league history.

About the roadrunners
UTSA looks to flip a switch after the Christmas break as the Roadrunners have dropped three of their four December games, including a 7854 loss to North Texas in their C-USA opener.
UTSA is still looking for its first road win as they are 0-3 away from home. They have dropped road games at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, New Mexico, and Utah.
The Roadrunners, trying to improve on a 10win season (and a 3-15 C-USA record) from last year, return several players including their leading scorer in center Jacob Germany. The senior was a Conference USA Honorable Mention selection last season after averaging 15.2 points and 7.3 rebounds per game.
So far this season, Germany is averaging 11.7 points and 7.8 rebounds. The Roadrunners are currently led in scoring by newcomer Japhet Medor, a transfer from Hillsborough College, who is averaging 12.3 points per game. He has scored in double figures in four of the last five games, including a 23-point effort at Utah.
UTSA freshman DJ Richards has been named the C-USA Freshman of the Week twice. He did so in back-to-back weeks, first after posting a career-high 20 points at New Mexico and then by tallying 12 points in back-to-back games against Utah and Bethune-Cookman. He has made five starts and is averaging 9.4 points and 4.1 boards per contest.
Offensively, UTSA is one of the best teams in the conference at getting to the free throw line. They average 14.8 made free throws per game, which ranks third in C-USA and 69th nationally.
Defensively, the Roadrunners are the best team in the league at defending the three. Opponents are shooting just 29.3 percent from beyond the arc. Only five of their 12 opponents have been able to shoot over 30 percent from downtown this season and not a single one has been able to make double-digit three-pointers in a game.
