BULLDOG STORYLINES

•Louisiana Tech is off to Houston on Thursday to take on the Rice Owls at 7 p.m. CT inside Tudor Fieldhouse. It will be the eighth road game of the season for the Bulldogs (most of any C-USA team) as well as the third game away from home in league play.

•LA Tech managed to erase a 13-point deficit, but ended up falling late to Charlotte by a narrow score of 68-66. The Bulldogs used a 13-2 run in the second half to take a lead with six minutes to go, but came up empty on too many possessions down the stretch. LA Tech shot 45.8 percent from beyond the arc (11-of-24), the second best clip of the season, but on the flipside the 49ers shot 53.3 percent from the field (second highest allowed).

•The defense continued to force turnovers, forcing Charlotte into 15 (second most by the 49ers this season). It marked the 11th time this season LA Tech has forced 15+ turnovers (one of only 18 teams in the country to have done so). The Bulldogs rank 11th in the nation in TOs forced per game at 18.29.

• Cobe Williams dropped a team-high 21 points in the narrow loss to Charlotte. It marked the sixth time this season he has anchored the Bulldogs in scoring. It was also the fifth time this season with at least 20 points.

•With the 21-point effort at Charlotte, Cobe Williams is now just seven points away from becoming the 44th member of the 1,000-point club at LA Tech. There have been a bunch of Bulldogs join the elite club as of late. Cobe will be the 10th Bulldog to do so in the last decade.

• Dravon Mangum returned to his home state of North Carolina and scored 17 points off the bench. The transfer forward is playing his best stretch of basketball, averaging 18.0 points while shooting 52.9 percent from the field and 52.4 percent from threepoint range (11 total threes) over his last three games.

•When LA Tech faces off against Rice in Houston on Thursday, it will be part of a stretch where the Bulldogs play four of their first six conference games on the road (only the third time ever in C-USA -- 2014-15 and 2017-18). LA Tech is the only team in C-USA this season having to play four of its first six league games away from home.

A LOUISIANA TECH WIN WOULD...

•Be LA Tech’s fourth straight victory when playing in the first game of the new calendar year. The Bulldogs have won eight of their last 10 such games.

•Be LA Tech’s sixth consecutive victory over Rice. It would be the third time in the series that the Bulldogs have strung together at least six wins over the Owls (have won 13 of the 15 meetings as C-USA opponents).

•Stop LA Tech from losing back-to-back conference games. The Bulldogs have lost back-to-back league games only three times over the last three-plus seasons.

HESTER

HEAD COACH | 1ST SEASON

Louisiana Tech President Dr. Les Guice and Vice President/Director of Athletics Dr. Eric A. Wood introduced Talvin Hester as the 19th head men’s basketball coach in program history.

Hester, who has 20 years of coaching experience, is no stranger to Ruston after spending three seasons (2018-21) as an assistant coach with the Bulldogs. Most recently, he spent one season as an assistant coach at Texas Tech where he helped the third-seeded Red Raiders reach the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament.

While in Lubbock this past season working under new head coach and Associated Press Big 12 Coach of the Year Mark Adams, Texas Tech put together a 27-win season including victories over Montana State and Notre Dame to help the program make its fifth Sweet 16 appearance in program history.

TTU, which had five All-Big 12 selections, was ranked as high as No. 9 in the country and reached the Big 12 championship final for just the second time in program history. The Red Raiders had the No. 1 ranked defense in the country (per Kenpom.com) while limiting opponents to only 60.2 points per game, holding teams to 38.2 percent shooting and forcing 15.9 turnovers per contest.

During his three successful years at LA Tech under Eric Konkol, Hester helped the Bulldogs register three winning seasons of 20-plus victories. The 2020-21 season saw the ‘Dogs register a 24-8 overall record while claiming a Conference USA West Division title and a third place finish in the National Invitation Tournament. The team received an at-large berth to play in the NIT for the first time since 2015 and became just the second team in program history to make the Final Four.

LA Tech, which had the highest-rated defense in C-USA ranking top 30 in the country in field goal percentage defense and three-point field goal percentage defense, upset Ole Miss in the first round, defeated league foe Western Kentucky in the quarterfinals and won a 76-74 thriller over No. 1 overall seed Colorado State in the Final Four consolation game.

In his second season in 2019-20, the Bulldogs registered a 22-8 overall record during the regular slate, but the team did not have a chance at postseason play with the Conference USA and NCAA/NIT Tournaments being canceled due to the public health threat of COVID-19. The 22 wins ended up being the most victories of any Conference USA team and of any Louisiana Division I team. The Bulldogs also recorded a 13-5 league record, finishing in a tie for second place.

In his first year with the ‘Dogs, Hester helped the team to 20 victories. Eight of the 20 victories came against teams who also produced 20-win seasons, the most in program history. One of those came in the season opener at Wichita State as the Bulldogs shocked the Shockers, handing them only their fourth loss in their last 76 games at home.

Hester helped coach All-Conference USA selections DaQuan Bracey (First Team), Kenneth Lofton, Jr. (Third Team and C-USA Freshman of the Year) and Isaiah Crawford (Third Team) as well as Cobe Williams who was a member of the C-USA All-Defensive Team.

Along with stops at Texas Tech and Louisiana Tech, Hester spent the majority of his coaching career in the south, especially in the Lone Star State. He spent time at Oral Roberts, Houston, Texas State, Stephen F. Austin, San Jose State, Prairie View A&M, Texas College, Texas Wesleyan and North Lake College during his career.

Hester began his coaching career in 2002 at North Lake College in Irving, Texas. His coaching resume also includes a stop with the Texas Rim Rockers of the United States Basketball League as an assistant coaching intern and the Dallas Mustangs AAU team for one season.

As a student-athlete, Hester played at Dallas Christian College during the 1996-97 season. He received his bachelor’s degree in interdisciplinary studies from Texas Wesleyan in 2003.

WHAT THEY ARE SAYING ABOUT TALVIN HESTER

MARK ADAMS, TEXAS TECH HEAD COACH

“Coach Hester was invaluable to the success of our program last year. I have no doubt that his 20 years of college experience and extraordinary passion for LA Tech make shim a perfect fit to lead the program.”

ERIC KONKOL, TULSA HEAD COACH

“Talvin has been a part of tremendous programs across many levels of basketball during his career. He was an integral part of ours at LA Tech as a coach, mentor to the players, and member of the community. Talvin has a terrific basketball mind, is an outstanding recruiter, and is a winner. I am very happy for Talvin, Jamieka, and Rhyan on their return to Ruston.”

alvin brooks, lamar head coach

“Talvin Hester is the complete package. He possesses a great understanding of the game, is a tremendous teacher and recruiter, leader of people and has the ability to develop special relationships with his players. He is a wonderful role model for young men and a winner.”

kelvin sampson, houston head coach

“This is a grand slam hire for Louisiana Tech. Talvin’s work ethic, his unbelievable communication skills, his temperament, his connectivity with the players, it was just a matter of time before he became a head coach. I applaud LA Tech for this hire.”

paul mills, oral roberts head coach

“Talvin’s experience, knowledge, and genuine love of people provide a unique combination for a leader in college basketball. Talvin is the total package. He is a winner in every facet. His handprints are all over each program he has been involved with as an assistant and he has left each of those programs better due to his involvement. Great things are in store for Louisiana Tech as the Bulldogs are in great hands.”

armoni brooks, nba guard

“Coach Hester is a great coach but an even better person. I have known him for years and he cares about his players off the court almost more than on the court. He is going to make sure his team plays hard and plays together while making sure that he teaches life lessons off the court.”

He also ranks second on the team in total assists with 49, meaning he has scored or assisted on 32 percent of LA Tech’s field goals.

And oh yeah, he is also one of the best defenders in the country having totaled 32 steals. He is the ONLY player in the country averaging at least 18.0 points, 4.0 assists, and 2.5 steals per game.

cobe & isaiah TAKE YOUR BALL

Two-time C-USA All-Defensive Team member Cobe Williams and Isaiah Crawford are making strong cases for being on the All-Defensive Team this season.

Both players have recorded at least four steals in five games, becoming just the 10th and 11th Bulldog in program history to have at least four steals five times in a single season.

ISAIAH GETTIN’ BACK TO OLD SELF

Jan. 11, 2020. El Paso, Texas. Nov. 15, 2021. Ruston, Louisiana.

Two days that Isaiah Crawford will never forget. Because on both of those days, he tore the ACL in his left knee (one of two known active players in the country to still be playing after two season-ending knee injuries).

After recovering from the first season-ending knee injury, he bounced back to have an All-Conference USA season (Third Team). He looks to have the same bounce back this season.

Through 14 games, Crawford is averaging 13.0 points per game while shooting 53 percent from the field, 38 percent from three, and 83 percent from the foul line.

He has scored in double figures eight times, including a season-high 22 points at Samford, the most since Feb. 5, 2021 at North Texas.

“threeston” willis

Keaston ... aka “Threeston” ... Willis made his presence known from beyond the three-point line in his first year with the Bulldogs last season. He ended up ranking in the top 50 in the country in three-point field goal percentage (39.2%) and three-pointers made (93). His 93 threes was the second most in program history in a single season.

He is already off to a good pace this season, having knocked down a team-high 34 three-pointers through 14 games.

The man has been a weapon from deep his entire collegiate career at UIW/LA Tech.

IMMEDIATE IMPACT FOR FROSH

Jordan Crawford had only one scholarship offer from a Division I college basketball program ... and that was the home town school of Louisiana Tech.

The true freshman who won four state championships at nearby Simsboro High School has made an immediate impact for the Bulldogs.

He has played in all 15 games while starting the last 11, and currently leads the team in total assists (66) and is third in total steals (22).

His 66 assists are the second most of any freshman in the country. His recent seven assists to zero turnovers against UTSA was the third time this season with at least five dimes and zero turnovers.

BENCH POINTS

Scoring depth has been a plus for the Bulldogs this season as the bench is averaging 28.3 points per game, which ranks third in Conference USA and top 40 in the country.

This bench scoring average currently ranks as the third best in program history over the last 30 years.

2012-13 30.6 bench points per game

2013-14 28.2 bench points per game

2022-23 27.8 bench points per game

2019-20 25.9 bench points per game

2020-21 24.4 bench points per game

They are just the 10th and 11th pair of Bulldogs to be on the roster at the same time with the same last name. This does mark the first time in program history that there are two sets of the same last name.

20-GAME LEAGUE SCHEDULE

With the departure of Southern Miss, Marshall, and Old Dominion to the Sun Belt, Conference USA went from a 14-team league to an 11team league.

As a result, the Bulldogs will take part in a 20game conference schedule for the first time in program history (had been an 18-game league schedule since 2014-15).

HOMETOWN KID

North Louisiana has seen its fair share of great basketball players. However, it is been rare to have a Bulldog from Louisiana Tech’s hometown of Ruston.

And for the first time since 2008, a Bulldog calls Ruston home in Jordan Crawford. The guard was a four-time state champion at nearbly Simsboro High School.

NEWS

north carolina duo

The majority of Bulldogs have always hailed from the home state of Louisiana and the neighboring state of Texas. Of course, Florida has been a popular state to pick players from as well over the last decade or so.

This season though, the Bulldogs have the addition of Dravon Mangum and Quandre Bullock, both of whom are from North Carolina.

Prior to this season, there had been only two Bulldogs to have ever called North Carolina home. That has doubled this season.

non-conference success

The Bulldogs produce strong non-conference regular seasons year in and year out, having tallied at least seven wins in the last 15 seasons.

During this span, LA Tech has now played exactly 200 non-conference regular season games and compiled a 141-59 record (70.5 winning percentage).

LA Tech currently has the most overall wins and the most conference wins since joining Conference USA in 2013-14 (records do not include this season).

The Bulldogs victory over USM on Jan. 13, 2022 turned out to be their 100th C-USA victory. It took them only 145 games to get there, the second fastest of any team in league history.

About the OWLS

Rice is off to its best start in almost 20 years, having compiled an 11-3 record. The Owls have won five straight and 10 of their last 11 games, including back-to-back conference road wins over WKU (81-78) and UTEP (7267OT ).

The Owls are one of four conference teams still undefeated at home this season, having won all eight games inside Tudor Fieldhouse. C-USA teams are a combined 72-11 at home this season.

Rice has one of the most potent offenses in the country, ranking in the top 30 in scoring at 82.6 points per game (have eclipsed 80 points in six of their last seven games) and field goal percentage at 48.9 percent. They share the basketball extremely well, averaging 18.1 assists per game (tops in the league), and they average the second most made three-pointers per game in the conference at 9.3 (have made 38 threes over their last three games).

The Owls give up their fair share of points defensively, but they are a strong rebounding team averaging 29.36 defensive boards per game (ranks ninth in the country).

Rice has started the same five Owls in every game this season with four of them averaging double-digit points. Quincy Olivari is the leader offensively, ranking third in the league in scoring at 18.1 points per game. The Third Team All-Conference USA selection a season ago has drained 37 three-pointers, second most in the league.

Perhaps the most important Owl on the roster is center Max Fiedler who does a little bit of everything, averaging 10.5 points as well as a team-best 8.2 rebounds and 4.9 assists per game.

LA Tech is in the midst of a five-game winning streak over Rice (its third winning streak of five or more in the series that dates back to 1974).

The two programs played four games in the 70s and 80s before becoming conference foes in the Western Athletic Conference (2001-05) and again in Conference USA (2013-present).
