BULLDOG STORYLINES
• Louisiana Tech plays its 20th game of the season on Saturday when they face Middle Tennessee at 4 p.m. inside the Thomas Assembly Center on Karl Malone Court. It will mark the first meeting betwee the Bulldogs and Blue Raiders in almost three years.
• LA Tech overcame its largest deficit of the season on Thursday, coming back from down 12 in the second half to win it over WKU, 85-74, in overtime. It was the third OT game of the season for the Bulldogs, the most since the 2018-19 season. They improved to 2-1 in OT games and are now 18-6 in OT games played in the TAC. Eight of their last nine games against Division I opponents have been decided by seven points or less (including seven of their eight league games).
• The Bulldogs outscored the Hilltoppers, 11-0, during the extra five minutes. LA Tech scored on all five of its offensive possessions while WKU went scoreless, going 0-of-7 from the field. It was the largest margin of victory in an OT game for the ‘Dogs since defeating North Texas, 73-62, in 2016. It was also the first time in program history (on record) that LA Tech shutout an opponent in overtime.
• Five players scored in double figures for the third time this season against the Hilltoppers, led by Cobe Williams who poured in a game-high 20 points. It was his seventh 20-point performance this season and the first time in his career he has had back-toback games of 20+ points. The conference’s fourth leading scorer has registered at least 16 points in all eight league games. He also ranks top four in the league in assists per game (4.4) and steals per game (2.3).
• Keaston Willis has started to light it up again from three. Over the last five games, the sharpshooter has made 17 of his 29 three-point attempts while averaging 16.0 points per game. He went 3-of-6 from deep against WKU, which included three-pointer No. 50 of the season.
• The Big Three of Cobe Williams (19.3), Keaston Willis (13.8), and Isaiah Crawford (13.3) have accounted for 63 percent of the Bulldogs scoring in C-USA action. All three rank in the top 15 in scoring during league play only and have set season highs in scoring over the last three games -- Cobe Williams with 27 against UAB, Keaston Willis with 23 against UAB, and Isaiah Crawford with 25 versus North Texas.
A LOUISIANA TECH WIN WOULD...
• Be the 10th victory over Middle Tennessee in Ruston. The Bulldogs are 9-1 all-time against the Blue Raiders at home with the lone loss coming in 2018.
• Be the 25th time they have swept a weekend conference series at home. The Bulldogs have won both back-to-back home matches (typically Thursday-Saturday) 24 out of the 33 times since joining Conference USA.
• Be the 11th straight win for the Bulldogs when wearing their white uniforms. LA Tech is a perfect 7-0 this season when wearing white. They are 63-7 in their white uniforms over the last five seasons.

Most recently, he spent one season as an assistant coach at Texas Tech where he helped the third-seeded Red Raiders reach the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament.

While in Lubbock this past season working under new head coach and Associated Press Big 12 Coach of the Year Mark Adams, Texas Tech put together a 27-win season including victories over Montana State and Notre Dame to help the program make its fifth Sweet 16 appearance in program history.
TTU, which had five All-Big 12 selections, was ranked as high as No. 9 in the country and reached the Big 12 championship final for just the second time in program history. The Red Raiders had the No. 1 ranked defense in the country (per Kenpom.com) while limiting opponents to only 60.2 points per game, holding teams to 38.2 percent shooting and forcing 15.9 turnovers per contest.
During his three successful years at LA Tech under Eric Konkol, Hester helped the Bulldogs register three winning seasons of 20-plus victories. The 2020-21 season saw the ‘Dogs register a 24-8 overall record while claiming a Conference USA West Division title and a third place finish in the National Invitation Tournament. The team received an at-large berth to play in the NIT for the first time since 2015 and became just the second team in program history to make the Final Four.
LA Tech, which had the highest-rated defense in C-USA ranking top 30 in the country in field goal percentage defense and three-point field goal percentage defense, upset Ole Miss in the first round, defeated league foe Western Kentucky in the quarterfinals and won a 76-74 thriller over No. 1 overall seed Colorado State in the Final Four consolation game.
In his second season in 2019-20, the Bulldogs registered a 22-8 overall record during the regular slate, but the team did not have a chance at postseason play with the Conference USA and NCAA/NIT Tournaments being canceled due to the public health threat of COVID-19. The 22 wins ended up being the most victories of any Conference USA team and of any Louisiana Division I team. The Bulldogs also recorded a 13-5 league record, finishing in a tie for second place.
In his first year with the ‘Dogs, Hester helped the team to 20 victories. Eight of the 20 victories came against teams who also produced 20-win seasons, the most in program history. One of those came in the season opener at Wichita State as the Bulldogs shocked the Shockers, handing them only their fourth loss in their last 76 games at home.
Hester helped coach All-Conference USA selections DaQuan Bracey (First Team), Kenneth Lofton, Jr. (Third Team and C-USA Freshman of the Year) and Isaiah Crawford (Third Team) as well as Cobe Williams who was a member of the C-USA All-Defensive Team.
Along with stops at Texas Tech and Louisiana Tech, Hester spent the majority of his coaching career in the south, especially in the Lone Star State. He spent time at Oral Roberts, Houston, Texas State, Stephen F. Austin, San Jose State, Prairie View A&M, Texas College, Texas Wesleyan and North Lake College during his career.
Hester began his coaching career in 2002 at North Lake College in Irving, Texas. His coaching resume also includes a stop with the Texas Rim Rockers of the United States Basketball League as an assistant coaching intern and the Dallas Mustangs AAU team for one season.
As a student-athlete, Hester played at Dallas Christian College during the 1996-97 season. He received his bachelor’s degree in interdisciplinary studies from Texas Wesleyan in 2003.

Cobe Williams has improved offensively every season he has been a Bulldog.
The preseason All-Conference USA selection ranks fourth in the league in scoring. He has scored in double figures in 15 of the 17 games this season, including seven 20-point games (career-high 27 vs. UAB).
He also ranks second on the team in total assists with 74, meaning he has scored or assisted on 35 percent of LA Tech’s field goals.
And oh yeah, he is also one of the best defenders in the country having totaled 39 steals. He is one of only six players in the country averaging at least 18.0 points, 4.0 assists, and 2.0 steals per game (Sam Sessoms -- Coppin State, Kendric Davis -- Memphis, Cameraon Shelton -- Loyola Marymount, Andrew Taylor -- Marshall, and Malik Miller -- Morgan State).
another 1,000-point scorer
Cobe Williams became the 44th member to join the 1,000-point club at Louisiana Tech, recording the milestone on Jan. 5 at Rice.
He became the 10th Bulldog in the last decade alone to accomplish this feat.
cobe & isaiah TAKE YOUR BALL
Two-time C-USA All-Defensive Team member Cobe Williams and Isaiah Crawford are making strong cases for being on the All-Defensive Team this season.
Both players have recorded at least four steals in six games, becoming just the 6th and 7th Bulldog in program history to have at least four steals six times in a single season.
Speedy Smith (2013-14) 8 times Speedy Smith (2014-15) 7 times Cobe Williams (2022-23) 6 times Isaiah Crawford (2022-23) 6 times Jacobi Boykins (2016-17) 6 times Alex Hamilton (2015-16) 6 times Doug Annison (1994-95) 6 times Willie Bland (1984-85) 6 times
They rank No. 2 and No. 4 in C-USA in total steals and are two of only seven players in the nation with at least six games of 4+ steals. LA Tech is one of only four teams in the country to have two players that have at least 38 steals (Memphis, Coppin State, and UNLV).
steals and turnovers oh my!
Turnovers and steals tend to go hand-andhand. That is definitely the case for Talvin Hester’s defense.
The Bulldogs have forced the second most turnovers of any team in C-USA (320) and have compiled the third most steals of any team in C-USA (165).
The 320 forced TOs ranks as the 21st most in the country while the 165 steals ranks tied for the 38th most in the nation.
LA Tech has forced 15+ turnovers in 11 games this season (seven of those times the ‘Dogs forced 20+ turnovers). Meanwhile, they have registered double-digit steals in nine games this season (including eight of their last 13 games).
ISAIAH GETTIN’ BACK TO OLD SELF
Jan. 11, 2020. El Paso, Texas. Nov. 15, 2021. Ruston, Louisiana.
Two days that Isaiah Crawford will never forget. Because on both of those days, he tore the ACL in his left knee (one of two known active players in the country to still be playing after two season-ending knee injuries).
After recovering from the first season-ending knee injury, he bounced back to have an All-Conference USA season (Third Team). He looks to have the same bounce back this season and so far he is.
Through 18 games, Crawford is averaging 12.8 points per game while shooting 52 percent from the field, 43 percent from three, and 78 percent from the foul line. And defensively, he ranks in the top 35 in the country in total steals and steals per game.
He has scored in double figures 11 times, including a season-high 25 points at North Texas this past Wednesday, the most since scoring a career-high 27 at North Texas on Feb. 5, 2021.
“threeston” willis
Keaston ... aka “Threeston” ... Willis made his presence known from beyond the three-point line in his first year with the Bulldogs last season.
He ended up ranking in the top 50 in the country in three-point field goal percentage (39.2%) and three-pointers made (93). His 93 threes was the second most in program history in a single season.
He is already off to a good pace this season, having knocked down a team-high 51 three-pointers through 19 games, recently eclipsing 250 made threes in the game at Rice on Jan. 5.
The man has been a weapon from deep his entire collegiate career at UIW/LA Tech.
266 total made three-pointers (104 games)
1+ made threes 92 times
2+ made threes 71 times
3+ made threes 50 times
4+ made threes 29 times
5+ made threes 14 times
6+ made threes 6 times
7+ made threes 3 times
AND NOTES

Jordan Crawford had only one scholarship offer from a Division I college basketball program ... and that was the home town school of Louisiana Tech.
The true freshman who won four state championships at nearby Simsboro High School has made an immediate impact for the Bulldogs.
He has played in all 19 games while making 15 starts, and currently leads the team in total assists (78) and is third in total steals (25).
His 78 assists are tied for the fifth most of any freshman in the country and ranks as the fifth most of any player in C-USA.

ANOTHER 20-Piece
LA Tech put together yet another 20-win season. It marked the 28th time in program history of reaching 20 wins. The Bulldogs are one of just 18 teams in Division I to have won 20+ games in at least nine of the last 10 seasons.

CRAWFORDS AND WILLIAMS
If you are seeing double with the last name on the jerseys, it is not you. Last season, the Bulldogs had a pair of Williams’ with Terran and Cobe. This season, there is the addition of having two Crawfords with Jordan and Isaiah.
They are just the 10th and 11th pair of Bulldogs to be on the roster at the same time with the same last name. This does mark the first time in program history that there are two sets of the same last name.
20-GAME LEAGUE SCHEDULE
With the departure of Southern Miss, Marshall, and Old Dominion to the Sun Belt, Conference USA went from a 14-team league to an 11team league.
As a result, the Bulldogs will take part in a 20game conference schedule for the first time in program history (had been an 18-game league schedule since 2014-15).
HOMETOWN KID
North Louisiana has seen its fair share of great basketball players. However, it is been rare to have a Bulldog from Louisiana Tech’s hometown of Ruston.
And for the first time since 2008, a Bulldog calls Ruston home in Jordan Crawford. The guard was a four-time state champion at nearbly Simsboro High School.
north carolina duo
The majority of Bulldogs have always hailed from the home state of Louisiana and the neighboring state of Texas. Of course, Florida has been a popular state to pick players from as well over the last decade or so.
This season though, the Bulldogs have the addition of Dravon Mangum and Quandre Bullock, both of whom are from North Carolina.
Prior to this season, there had been only two Bulldogs to have ever called North Carolina home. That has doubled this season.

With the Bulldogs success in C-USA, its no surprise that they lead in every conference series history since joining the league.

The Bulldogs victory over USM on Jan. 13, 2022 turned out to be their 100th C-USA victory. It took them only 145 games to get there, the second fastest of any team in league history.

About the blue raiders
After dropping three of its first four conference games, Middle Tennessee has reeled off three straight wins over Rice, UAB, and Charlotte. The three victories have been by a combined seven points.
The Blue Raiders are coming off a 62-58 home win over the 49ers. The game featured 11 ties and 11 lead changes. The 11th tie came with 1:28 to go as the two teams were knotted up at 53-53. Tyler Millin broke the tie with a three-pointer for Middle Tennessee. Then the home team made half a dozen free throws down the stretch to seal it.
Middle Tennessee hangs its hat on defense, ranking fourth in the league in scoring defense at 65.8 points per game. They have held four of their eight league opponents to 60 points or less. As part of their defense, the Blue Raiders rank 19th in the country in blocks per game (5.3) and 61st in steals per game (7.9).
It is a fairly balanced scoring team with Deandre Dishman and Eli Lawrence leading the charge at 12.3 and 12.2 points per game, respetively. Lawrence has upped his scoring during league action, averaging 14.0 points per contest.
Another threat for MTSU is Teafale Lenard, Jr. who was a preseason All-Conference USA selection. The guard was a C-USA All-Freshman Team member last season and is currently averaging 8.8 points while also leading the team in total steals and blocks.
Strangely, Saturday will be the first time in almost exactly three years (Jan. 23, 2020) that conference foes LA Tech and Middle Tennessee face off against one another. In last season’s league format, you played everybody in your division twice and all but one opponent in the other division once (for the Bulldogs and Blue Raiders that was each other). LA Tech was supposed to play two games at Middle Tennessee during the COVID season of 2020-21, but that series actually got wiped out due to the ‘Dogs inability to travel to Murfreesboro as a result of the big snow/ice storm that hit Ruston.

The first ever meeting between LA Tech and Middle Tennessee came on Dec. 12, 1959 with the Bulldogs winning it, 81-63, in Ruston inside Memoial Gymnasium.
The two squads played a home-and-home series for three consecutive seasons (1987-90) before becoming conference opponents for only one season in the Sun Belt in 2000-01. The two squads became league foes in 2013 when both programs joined Conference USA. Since then, LA Tech owns a 6-3 series lead.
Cobe Williams is the only Bulldog on the roster to have played Middle Tennessee. He played 16 minutes in the 80-73 win back in 2020.
