BULLDOG STORYLINES
• No.10 seed Louisiana Tech takes on No. 2 seed North Texas in the Conference USA Tournament quarterfinals on Thursday night at 8 p.m. CT inside the Ford Center at the Star. It will be the third straight year that the Bulldogs and Mean Green face off in the league tournament.
• LA Tech and FIU went into overtime for the second time in six days, and again the Bulldogs prevailed, this time by a score of 81-76 to advance in the C-USA Tournament. The ‘Dogs had their 20-point lead erased, but outscored the Panthers, 12-7, in OT to make it to the quarterfinals (something they have done in all nine C-USA Tournaments they have played in).
• The Bulldogs played their sixth overtime game of the season, the most in program history. They are tied with two other teams (Wisconsin and Texas A&M-Commerce) for the most OT games played this season. It was the second time ever that the ‘Dogs played an OT game in the C-USA Tournament.
• The All-Conference duo of Keaston Willis (honorable mention) and Isaiah Crawford (third team) combined for 46 points, 18 rebounds, and six assists in the win over FIU. Willis tied his season high with 23 points (tied for most ever by a Bulldog in a C-USA Tournament game) to go along with a career-high 10 rebounds, registering his first career double-double (has played 116 collegiate games). Meanwhile, Crawford tallied 22 points for his seventh 20+ scoring performance of the season. It was the second time he has tallied at least 20 points in a C-USA Tournament game.
• Two-time All-Conference USA selection Isaiah Crawford has increased his offensive production as of late. Over the last eight games, he is averaging 17.9 points while shooting 47.3 percent from the field and 43.3 percent from beyond the arc. Three of his seven 20-point scoring efforts has come during this stretch, including back-to-back 20-point games in the regular season finale against Florida Atlantic and the C-USA Tournament first round matchup with FIU. With this latest offensive output, he is now just 26 points shy of becoming the 45th 1,000-point scorer in program history.
• Keaston Willis drained four more three-pointers in the OT win, giving him 296 made three-pointers for his career. In his five career C-USA Tournament games, he has made 15 total triples (has made at least four in three games).
• LA Tech and North Texas meet up in the C-USA Tournament for the fourth time, the most common opponent for the Bulldogs in the postseason. The ‘Dogs eliminated the top-seeded Mean Green in the semifinals last season in what was the lowest scoring game in tournament history (won 42-36). It was revenge as North Texas eliminated top-seeded LA Tech in the 2021 C-USA Tournament semifinals. The two teams also met in the 2018 C-USA Tournament as well as twice when they were league foes in the Southland Conference (1983 and 1984).
• North Texas swept the season series over LA Tech, winning 67-65 in Denton on a game-winning jumper by Kai Huntsberry with four seconds left. The Mean Green prevailed, 72-62, in Ruston behind a 61.2 percent shooting effort (Bulldogs allowed a season-high 48 paint points).

TALVIN HESTER
HEAD COACH | 1ST SEASON
Louisiana Tech President Dr. Les Guice and Vice President/Director of Athletics Dr. Eric A. Wood introduced Talvin Hester as the 19th head men’s basketball coach in program history.
Hester, who has 20 years of coaching experience, is no stranger to Ruston after spending three seasons (2018-21) as an assistant coach with the Bulldogs. Most recently, he spent one season as an assistant coach at Texas Tech where he helped the third-seeded Red Raiders reach the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament.
![](https://assets.isu.pub/document-structure/230309085358-a7ecb5a925f635ed5f48dfed63a7d180/v1/dbd77df2bff49cd50d86b21d4a7bb39a.jpeg)
While in Lubbock this past season working under new head coach and Associated Press Big 12 Coach of the Year Mark Adams, Texas Tech put together a 27-win season including victories over Montana State and Notre Dame to help the program make its fifth Sweet 16 appearance in program history.
TTU, which had five All-Big 12 selections, was ranked as high as No. 9 in the country and reached the Big 12 championship final for just the second time in program history. The Red Raiders had the No. 1 ranked defense in the country (per Kenpom.com) while limiting opponents to only 60.2 points per game, holding teams to 38.2 percent shooting and forcing 15.9 turnovers per contest.
During his three successful years at LA Tech under Eric Konkol, Hester helped the Bulldogs register three winning seasons of 20-plus victories. The 2020-21 season saw the ‘Dogs register a 24-8 overall record while claiming a Conference USA West Division title and a third place finish in the National Invitation Tournament. The team received an at-large berth to play in the NIT for the first time since 2015 and became just the second team in program history to make the Final Four.
LA Tech, which had the highest-rated defense in C-USA ranking top 30 in the country in field goal percentage defense and three-point field goal percentage defense, upset Ole Miss in the first round, defeated league foe Western Kentucky in the quarterfinals and won a 76-74 thriller over No. 1 overall seed Colorado State in the Final Four consolation game.
In his second season in 2019-20, the Bulldogs registered a 22-8 overall record during the regular slate, but the team did not have a chance at postseason play with the Conference USA and NCAA/NIT Tournaments being canceled due to the public health threat of COVID-19. The 22 wins ended up being the most victories of any Conference USA team and of any Louisiana Division I team. The Bulldogs also recorded a 13-5 league record, finishing in a tie for second place.
In his first year with the ‘Dogs, Hester helped the team to 20 victories. Eight of the 20 victories came against teams who also produced 20-win seasons, the most in program history. One of those came in the season opener at Wichita State as the Bulldogs shocked the Shockers, handing them only their fourth loss in their last 76 games at home.
Hester helped coach All-Conference USA selections DaQuan Bracey (First Team), Kenneth Lofton, Jr. (Third Team and C-USA Freshman of the Year) and Isaiah Crawford (Third Team) as well as Cobe Williams who was a member of the C-USA All-Defensive Team.
Along with stops at Texas Tech and Louisiana Tech, Hester spent the majority of his coaching career in the south, especially in the Lone Star State. He spent time at Oral Roberts, Houston, Texas State, Stephen F. Austin, San Jose State, Prairie View A&M, Texas College, Texas Wesleyan and North Lake College during his career.
Hester began his coaching career in 2002 at North Lake College in Irving, Texas. His coaching resume also includes a stop with the Texas Rim Rockers of the United States Basketball League as an assistant coaching intern and the Dallas Mustangs AAU team for one season.
As a student-athlete, Hester played at Dallas Christian College during the 1996-97 season. He received his bachelor’s degree in interdisciplinary studies from Texas Wesleyan in 2003.

“Talvin has been a part of tremendous programs across many levels of basketball during his career. He was an integral part of ours at LA Tech as a coach, mentor to the players, and member of the community. Talvin has a terrific basketball mind, is an outstanding recruiter, and is a winner. I am very happy for Talvin, Jamieka, and Rhyan on their return to Ruston.”

“This is a grand slam hire for Louisiana Tech. Talvin’s work ethic, his unbelievable communication skills, his temperament, his connectivity with the players, it was just a matter of time before he became a head coach. I applaud LA Tech for this hire.”
paul mills, oral roberts head coach
“Talvin’s experience, knowledge, and genuine love of people provide a unique combination for a leader in college basketball. Talvin is the total package. He is a winner in every facet. His handprints are all over each program he has been involved with as an assistant and he has left each of those programs better due to his involvement. Great things are in store for Louisiana Tech as the Bulldogs are in great hands.”
armoni brooks, nba guard
“Coach Hester is a great coach but an even better person. I have known him for years and he cares about his players off the court almost more than on the court. He is going to make sure his team plays hard and plays together while making sure that he teaches life lessons off the court.”

TRYING TO GO DANCING
From 1984-91, the Bulldogs were regulars in the NCAA Tournament, making five appearances including a Sweet 16 appearance in 1985 with NBA legend Karl Malone.
However, the Big Dance has eluded the program over the last 32 years with their last appearance coming in 1991 after winning the America South Tournament championship to receive the automatic bid.
Since then, LA Tech has reached the conference tournament championship game four times and suffered losses in all four. They reached the title game for the first time in eight years last season, falling to UAB in the championship..

TEAMS FACED IN TOURNEY
Despite this being the ninth time LA Tech will play in the Conference USA Tournament, there are three teams the Bulldogs have never faced.
On the flipside, they have played Florida Atlantic, North Texas, and UAB multiple times.
The most common opponent has been the Mean Green of North Texas and the UAB Blazers (three times each). They faced UAB in the C-USA Tournament finals last season.

It was the largest margin of victory in an OT game for the ‘Dogs since defeating North Texas, 73-62, in 2016. It was also the first time in program history (on record) that LA Tech shutout an opponent in overtime.
isaiah TAKEs YOUR BALL
Isaiah Crawford is making a strong case for being on the C-USA All-Defensive Team.
He has recorded at least four steals in nine games, breaking the program record for most games with four-plus steals in a single season.

After recovering from the first knee injury, he bounced back to have an All-Conference USA season (Third Team). He bounced back again from a knee injury to be Third Team All-CUSA.
He is averaging a team-best 13.9 points and 5.3 rebounds per game while shooting 50 percent from the field and 43 percent from three. And defensively, he ranks top 40 in the country in total steals and steals per game.

IMMEDIATE IMPACT FOR FROSH
Jordan Crawford had only one scholarship offer from a Division I college basketball program ... and that was the home town school of Louisiana Tech.
The true freshman who won four state championships at nearby Simsboro High School has made an immediate impact for the Bulldogs.
He has played in all 32 games while making 21 starts, and is first on the team in total assists (99) and second in total steals (37).
MTE SUCCESS
Practically every season, Louisiana Tech plays in a multi-team event. And practically every season, the Bulldogs go updated in said events.
LA Tech went 3-0 in the Samford MTE this season, winning road games at Alabama A&M and Samford plus a neutral site victory over UT Southern.
Over the last decade, the ‘Dogs are a combined 31-6 in multi-team events.

CRAWFORD x2
If you are seeing double with the last name on the jerseys, it is not you. Last season, the Bulldogs had a pair of Williams’ with Terran and Cobe. This season, there is the addition of having two Crawfords with Jordan and Isaiah.
They are just the 10th and 11th pair of Bulldogs to be on the roster at the same time with the same last name. This does mark the first time in program history that there are two sets of the same last name.
North Louisiana has seen its fair share of great basketball players. However, it is been rare to have a Bulldog from Louisiana Tech’s hometown of Ruston.
And for the first time since 2008, a Bulldog calls Ruston home in Jordan Crawford. The guard was a four-time state champion at nearbly Simsboro High School.
north carolina duo
The majority of Bulldogs have always hailed from the home state of Louisiana and the neighboring state of Texas. Of course, Florida has been a popular state to pick players from as well over the last decade or so.
This season though, the Bulldogs have the addition of Dravon Mangum and Quandre Bullock, both of whom are from North Carolina.
Prior to this season, there had been only two Bulldogs to have ever called North Carolina home. That has doubled this season.

With the Bulldogs success in C-USA, its no surprise that they do not trail in any conference series history since joining the league.

Since 2014, there have been 10 Bulldogs to join the 1,000-point club, bringing the grand total to 44 for LA Tech. Cobe Williams recently became the 44th, reaching the milestone in the overtime win at Rice on Jan. 5.
About the mean green
North Texas heads into the C-USA Tournament having won 10 of its last 11 games. Their most dominant performance came in the regular season finale, demolishing WKU by a score of 67-33.
The Mean Green rely heavily on their defense, which ranks No. 1 in the country in points allowed at 55.4 per game. It is no surprise that they also rank first in C-USA in field goal percentage defense (40.1) and three-point field goal percentage defense (31.0).
North Texas is anchored by C-USA Player of the Year Tylor Perry who is averaging 17.0 points per game. He is arguably the best three-point shooter in the league, shooting 42.6 percent from downtown with 89 made threes.
North Texas has had the upper-hand as of late, winning six of the last seven meetings. The lone win by LA Tech came in the 2022 C-USA Tournament semifinals.
Close games is all that North Texas and LA Tech know. Thirteen of the last 14 meetings have been decided by 10 points or less, including both matchups this season. Five of those 14 have been decided by one possession.
North Texas is shooting a blistering 55.8 percent from the field and 43.3 percent from three-point range in the two meetings this season. Isaiah Crawford has been the best weapon for the Bulldogs in those games, averaging 18.5 points per game followed by Keaston Willis with 15.5 points per game. Crawford seems to like playing the Mean Green as he has put up scoring outputs of 27 and 25 against them in his career.
