BULLDOG STORYLINES
• After two grueling games on the road, Louisiana Tech returns home to the Thomas Assembly Center to face ULM on Monday night at 6 p.m. on Karl Malone Court. The Bulldogs are set to play four games over a span of six days.
• The first ever meeting between LA Tech and ULM took place nearly 70 years ago in 1954 when the Warhawks joined the Gulf State Conference. The two programs, separat ed by only 35 miles, played every season at least twice all the way up until 1991. Since then, they have faced off nine times including the last two seasons.
• LA Tech led for the majority of the game against UL-Lafayette, but the Ragin’ Cajuns went on a 19-3 run late in the second half to grab the lead which they held onto in a final score of 94-88. With both teams shooting over 50 percent, the difference ended up being free throws as the Bulldogs went 13-of-14 while the Cajuns were 22-of-32 from the foul line. LA Tech was whistled for 29 fouls, the most in five years.
• Cobe Williams was near unstoppable on offense, scoring a career-high 26 points (previous high was 22 versus Marshall last season). The fourth-year guard is averaging a team-high 19.3 points per game, the most by a Bulldog through the first three games of a season since Jalen Harris in 2017-18.
• Isaiah Crawford showed flashes of two seasons ago in Lafayette, scoring a sea son-high 18 points on 7-of-9 shooting. It was the most points scored by the forward since March 11, 2021.
• The Bulldogs registered nine steals against the Ragin’ Cajuns. They have amassed 29 steals through the first three games, recording at least nine steals in all three (first time since 2017). LA Tech had at least nine steals in just five total games last season.
• Jordan Crawford, the reigning C-USA Freshman of the Week, dished out a team-high three assists at UL-Lafayette. He also anchored the team in assists at No 23 Texas Tech with six and is now averaging 4.0 assists per game so far this season, making him one of just 17 freshman in the country currently to be averaging at least four dimes.
A LOUISIANA TECH WIN WOULD...
• Would be LA Tech’s 10th straight win over ULM. The nine straight victories by the Bulldogs over the Warhawks is the second longest active winning streak over any op ponent (LA Tech has won 12 straight versus Jackson State).
• Would be LA Tech’s 30th consecutive home win against a non-conference opponent, a streak that dates back to the 2018-19 season. It would tie for the longest such streak in the Thomas Assembly Center.
• Would be LA Tech’s 17th victory over ULM inside the Thomas Assembly Center. The Bulldogs are a perfect 16-0 versus the Warhawks in the TAC.

HEAD COACH | 1ST SEASON
Louisiana Tech President Dr. Les Guice and Vice President/Director of Athletics Dr. Eric A. Wood introduced Talvin Hester as the 19th head men’s basketball coach in program history.
Hester, who has 20 years of coaching experience, is no stranger to Ruston after spending three seasons (2018-21) as an assistant coach with the Bulldogs. Most recently, he spent one season as an assistant coach at Texas Tech where he helped the third-seeded Red Raiders reach the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament.
While in Lubbock this past season working under new head coach and Associated Press Big 12 Coach of the Year Mark Adams, Texas Tech put together a 27-win season including victories over Montana State and Notre Dame to help the program make its fifth Sweet 16 appearance in program history.
TTU, which had five All-Big 12 selections, was ranked as high as No. 9 in the country and reached the Big 12 championship final for just the second time in program history. The Red Raiders had the No. 1 ranked defense in the country (per Kenpom.com) while limiting opponents to only 60.2 points per game, holding teams to 38.2 percent shooting and forcing 15.9 turnovers per contest.
During his three successful years at LA Tech under Eric Konkol, Hester helped the Bulldogs register three winning seasons of 20-plus victories. The 2020-21 season saw the ‘Dogs register a 24-8 overall record while claiming a Conference USA West Division title and a third place finish in the National Invitation Tournament. The team received an at-large berth to play in the NIT for the first time since 2015 and became just the second team in program history to make the Final Four.
LA Tech, which had the highest-rated defense in C-USA ranking top 30 in the country in field goal percentage defense and three-point field goal percentage defense, upset Ole Miss in the first round, defeated league foe Western Kentucky in the quarterfinals and won a 76-74 thriller over No. 1 overall seed Colorado State in the Final Four consolation game.
In his second season in 2019-20, the Bulldogs registered a 22-8 overall record during the regular slate, but the team did not have a chance at post season play with the Conference USA and NCAA/NIT Tournaments being canceled due to the public health threat of COVID-19. The 22 wins ended up being the most victories of any Conference USA team and of any Louisiana Division I team. The Bulldogs also recorded a 13-5 league record, finishing in a tie for second place.
In his first year with the ‘Dogs, Hester helped the team to 20 victories. Eight of the 20 victories came against teams who also produced 20-win seasons, the most in program history. One of those came in the season opener at Wichita State as the Bulldogs shocked the Shockers, handing them only their fourth loss in their last 76 games at home.
Hester helped coach All-Conference USA selections DaQuan Bracey (First Team), Kenneth Lofton, Jr. (Third Team and C-USA Freshman of the Year) and Isaiah Crawford (Third Team) as well as Cobe Williams who was a member of the C-USA All-Defensive Team.
Along with stops at Texas Tech and Louisiana Tech, Hester spent the majority of his coaching career in the south, especially in the Lone Star State. He spent time at Oral Roberts, Houston, Texas State, Stephen F. Austin, San Jose State, Prairie View A&M, Texas College, Texas Wesleyan and North Lake College during his career.
Hester began his coaching career in 2002 at North Lake College in Irving, Texas. His coaching resume also includes a stop with the Texas Rim Rockers of the United States Basketball League as an assistant coaching intern and the Dallas Mustangs AAU team for one season.
As a student-athlete, Hester played at Dallas Christian College during the 1996-97 season. He received his bachelor’s degree in interdisciplinary stud ies from Texas Wesleyan in 2003.

WHAT THEY ARE SAYING ABOUT TALVIN HESTER
MARK ADAMS, TEXAS TECH HEAD COACH
“Coach Hester was invaluable to the success of our program last year. I have no doubt that his 20 years of college experience and extraordinary passion for LA Tech make shim a perfect fit to lead the program.”
ERIC KONKOL, TULSA HEAD COACH
“Talvin has been a part of tremendous programs across many levels of basketball during his career. He was an integral part of ours at LA Tech as a coach, mentor to the players, and member of the community. Talvin has a terrific basketball mind, is an outstanding recruiter, and is a winner. I am very happy for Talvin, Jamieka, and Rhyan on their return to Ruston.”
alvin brooks, lamar head coach
“Talvin Hester is the complete package. He possesses a great understanding of the game, is a tremendous teacher and recruiter, leader of people and has the ability to develop special relationships with his players. He is a wonderful role model for young men and a winner.”
kelvin sampson, houston head coach
“This is a grand slam hire for Louisiana Tech. Talvin’s work ethic, his unbelievable commu nication skills, his temperament, his connectivity with the players, it was just a matter of time before he became a head coach. I applaud LA Tech for this hire.”
paul mills, oral roberts head coach
“Talvin’s experience, knowledge, and genuine love of people provide a unique combina tion for a leader in college basketball. Talvin is the total package. He is a winner in every facet. His handprints are all over each program he has been involved with as an assistant and he has left each of those programs better due to his involvement. Great things are in store for Louisiana Tech as the Bulldogs are in great hands.”
armoni brooks, nba guard
“Coach Hester is a great coach but an even better person. I have known him for years and he cares about his players off the court almost more than on the court. He is going to make sure his team plays hard and plays together while making sure that he teaches life lessons off the court.”

ISAIAH GETTIN’ BACK TO OLD SELF
Jan. 11, 2020. El Paso, Texas. Nov. 15, 2021. Ruston, Louisiana.
Two days that Isaiah Crawford will never for get. Because on both of those days, he tore the ACL in his left knee (one of two known active players in the country to still be playing after two season-ending knee injuries).
After recovering from the first season-end ing knee injury, he bounced back to have an All-Conference USA season (Third Team). He looks to have the same bounce back this season.
Through three games, Crawford is averaging 12.0 points per game while shooting 65 per cent from the field. He scored a season-high 18 points at UL-Lafayette, the most since March 11, 2021.
HESTER WINS FIRST GAME AS HC
Talvin Hester picked up his first ever win as head coach in the season opener as the Bull dogs defeated the Choctaws of Mississippi College, 78-61.
He became the third straight LA Tech HC to win the season opener and the seventh straight to win their home opener.

Cobe Williams was one of 10 players named to the Preseason All-Conference USA Team in a vote by the league head coaches.
The fourth-year guard was a C-USA Honorable Mention selection last season after starting in all 34 games, averaging 11.3 points per game to go along with a team-best 103 assists and 42 steals.
He is one of the most experienced Bulldogs on the roster, having played in 96 career games.

LA Tech got in some extra work this summer in preparation for the 2022-23 season under first-year head coach Talvin Hester as the Bull dogs went on a summer tour to Puerto Rico (in previous years the Bulldogs have gone to the Bahamas (2014) and Costa Rica (2018)).
The ‘Dogs spent six days on the island where they toured the capital city of San Juan, en joyed paddle boarding, ziplining, down time at the pool and beach ... and three wins.

He ended up ranking in the top 50 in the country in three-point field goal percentage (39.2%) and three-pointers made (93). His 93 threes was the second most in program histo ry in a single season.

• Two-time All-Conference USA
• Louisiana Major College Player of the Year

In a college basketball world now littered with transfers, you do not see true freshmen make an immediate impact very often.
Last season, Kaleb Stewart became the fifth Bulldog (all since 2017) to be named to the Conference USA All-Freshman Team. That is tied for the most in C-USA since LA Tech joined the league in 2013-14.

20-GAME LEAGUE SCHEDULE
With the departure of Southern Miss, Marshall, and Old Dominion to the Sun Belt, Conference USA went from a 14-team league to an 11team league.
As a result, the Bulldogs will take part in a 20game conference schedule for the first time in program history (had been an 18-game league schedule since 2014-15).
CRAWFORDS AND WILLIAMS
If you are seeing double with the last name on the jerseys, it is not you. Last season, the Bulldogs had a pair of Williams’ with Terran and Cobe. This season, there is the addition of having two Crawfords with Jordan and Isaiah.
They are just the 10th and 11th pair of Bull dogs to be on the roster at the same time with the same last name. This does mark the first time in program history that there are two sets of the same last name.
HOMETOWN KID
North Louisiana has seen its fair share of great basketball players. However, it is been rare to have a Bulldog from Louisiana Tech’s home town of Ruston.
And for the first time since 2008, a Bulldog calls Ruston home in Jordan Crawford. The guard was a four-time state champion at near bly Simsboro High School.
north carolina duo
The majority of Bulldogs have always hailed from the home state of Louisiana and the neighboring state of Texas. Of course, Florida has been a popular state to pick players from as well over the last decade or so.
This season though, the Bulldogs have the ad dition of Dravon Mangum and Quandre Bull ock, both of whom are from North Carolina.
Prior to this season, there had been only two Bulldogs to have ever called North Carolina home. That has doubled this season.
non-conference success
The Bulldogs produce strong non-conference seasons year in and year out, having tallied at least nine wins in eight of the last 10 seasons.
