BULLDOG STORYLINES

• Louisiana Tech plays its final non-conference road game this Saturday when they make the long trek to face Wyoming at 8 p.m. CT inside Arena-Auditorium. This will be the farthest trip for the Bulldogs during the 2022-23 season.

• LA Tech extended its winning streak to five this past Friday with a 74-59 victory over Southern. In doing so, the Bulldogs set a new program record for the longest non-con ference winning streak at home at 31 games. They have not lost at home in non-con ference play in the last four years.

• For the fourth straight season, the Bulldogs are off a 6-2 start through their first eight games. LA Tech has won at least six of its first eight games in nine of the last 11 seasons.

• Cobe Williams had one of the best statistical performances in college basketball this season against the Jaguars. Not only did he score a game-high 21 points (15 coming in the second half), he also set or tied season highs in rebounds (7), assists (6), steals (4), and blocks (2). The fourth-year guard also committed zero turnovers in the process.

• In the first half against Southern, it was Keaston Willis who was on fire offensively. He scored all 16 of his points through the first 20 minutes, sinking four three-pointers in the process. He has made at least three triples in each of the last five games (longest streak of his collegiate career), totaling 18 three-pointers during that span.

• LA Tech has forced 20+ turnovers in five games this season. As a result, three players -- Cobe Williams (17), Isaiah Crawford (16), Jordan Crawford (16) -- rank in the top seven in the league in total steals with all three averaging at least 2.00 steals per game. The trio is part of only four teams in the country currently with 16+ steals apiece.

• LA Tech’s defense has been outstanding in the first half this season, holding teams to just 28.6 points per game while allowing only 36 percent shooting from the field. Re versely, the Bulldogs have been outstanding on offense in the second half, scoring 40.8 points per game while shooting 50 percent from the field.

• Saturday will be LA Tech’s fourth trip to the state of Wyoming. The Bulldogs faced the Cowboys in Laramie in 1991 and 2011 as well as a 1998 meeting in Casper.

A LOUISIANA TECH WIN WOULD...

• Be LA Tech’s first ever win over Wyoming. The Cowboys are one of only six teams that the Bulldogs have faced at least four times and never won.

• Be LA Tech’s third ever victory in the state of Wyoming. The Bulldogs defeated Yale in 1998 as part of the Cowboy Shootout in Casper and defeated UMES in the opening game of the Jim Thorpe Classic in Laramie in 2011.

• Be LA Tech’s sixth straight victory. The Bulldogs have registered at least a 6-game winning streak in each of the last two seasons.

HESTER

HEAD COACH | 1ST SEASON

Louisiana Tech President Dr. Les Guice and Vice President/Director of Athletics Dr. Eric A. Wood introduced Talvin Hester as the 19th head men’s basketball coach in program history.

Hester, who has 20 years of coaching experience, is no stranger to Ruston after spending three seasons (2018-21) as an assistant coach with the Bulldogs. Most recently, he spent one season as an assistant coach at Texas Tech where he helped the third-seeded Red Raiders reach the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament.

While in Lubbock this past season working under new head coach and Associated Press Big 12 Coach of the Year Mark Adams, Texas Tech put together a 27-win season including victories over Montana State and Notre Dame to help the program make its fifth Sweet 16 appearance in program history.

TTU, which had five All-Big 12 selections, was ranked as high as No. 9 in the country and reached the Big 12 championship final for just the second time in program history. The Red Raiders had the No. 1 ranked defense in the country (per Kenpom.com) while limiting opponents to only 60.2 points per game, holding teams to 38.2 percent shooting and forcing 15.9 turnovers per contest.

During his three successful years at LA Tech under Eric Konkol, Hester helped the Bulldogs register three winning seasons of 20-plus victories. The 2020-21 season saw the ‘Dogs register a 24-8 overall record while claiming a Conference USA West Division title and a third place finish in the National Invitation Tournament. The team received an at-large berth to play in the NIT for the first time since 2015 and became just the second team in program history to make the Final Four.

LA Tech, which had the highest-rated defense in C-USA ranking top 30 in the country in field goal percentage defense and three-point field goal percentage defense, upset Ole Miss in the first round, defeated league foe Western Kentucky in the quarterfinals and won a 76-74 thriller over No. 1 overall seed Colorado State in the Final Four consolation game.

In his second season in 2019-20, the Bulldogs registered a 22-8 overall record during the regular slate, but the team did not have a chance at post season play with the Conference USA and NCAA/NIT Tournaments being canceled due to the public health threat of COVID-19. The 22 wins ended up being the most victories of any Conference USA team and of any Louisiana Division I team. The Bulldogs also recorded a 13-5 league record, finishing in a tie for second place.

In his first year with the ‘Dogs, Hester helped the team to 20 victories. Eight of the 20 victories came against teams who also produced 20-win seasons, the most in program history. One of those came in the season opener at Wichita State as the Bulldogs shocked the Shockers, handing them only their fourth loss in their last 76 games at home.

Hester helped coach All-Conference USA selections DaQuan Bracey (First Team), Kenneth Lofton, Jr. (Third Team and C-USA Freshman of the Year) and Isaiah Crawford (Third Team) as well as Cobe Williams who was a member of the C-USA All-Defensive Team.

Along with stops at Texas Tech and Louisiana Tech, Hester spent the majority of his coaching career in the south, especially in the Lone Star State. He spent time at Oral Roberts, Houston, Texas State, Stephen F. Austin, San Jose State, Prairie View A&M, Texas College, Texas Wesleyan and North Lake College during his career.

Hester began his coaching career in 2002 at North Lake College in Irving, Texas. His coaching resume also includes a stop with the Texas Rim Rockers of the United States Basketball League as an assistant coaching intern and the Dallas Mustangs AAU team for one season.

As a student-athlete, Hester played at Dallas Christian College during the 1996-97 season. He received his bachelor’s degree in interdisciplinary stud ies from Texas Wesleyan in 2003.

ERIC KONKOL, TULSA HEAD COACH

“Talvin has been a part of tremendous programs across many levels of basketball during his career. He was an integral part of ours at LA Tech as a coach, mentor to the players, and member of the community. Talvin has a terrific basketball mind, is an outstanding recruiter, and is a winner. I am very happy for Talvin, Jamieka, and Rhyan on their return to Ruston.”

alvin brooks, lamar head coach

“Talvin Hester is the complete package. He possesses a great understanding of the game, is a tremendous teacher and recruiter, leader of people and has the ability to develop special relationships with his players. He is a wonderful role model for young men and a winner.”

kelvin sampson, houston head coach

“This is a grand slam hire for Louisiana Tech. Talvin’s work ethic, his unbelievable commu nication skills, his temperament, his connectivity with the players, it was just a matter of time before he became a head coach. I applaud LA Tech for this hire.”

paul mills, oral roberts head coach

“Talvin’s experience, knowledge, and genuine love of people provide a unique combina tion for a leader in college basketball. Talvin is the total package. He is a winner in every facet. His handprints are all over each program he has been involved with as an assistant and he has left each of those programs better due to his involvement. Great things are in store for Louisiana Tech as the Bulldogs are in great hands.”

armoni brooks, nba guard

“Coach Hester is a great coach but an even better person. I have known him for years and he cares about his players off the court almost more than on the court. He is going to make sure his team plays hard and plays together while making sure that he teaches life lessons off the court.”

ISAIAH GETTIN’ BACK TO OLD SELF

Jan. 11, 2020. El Paso, Texas. Nov. 15, 2021. Ruston, Louisiana.

Two days that Isaiah Crawford will never for get. Because on both of those days, he tore the ACL in his left knee (one of two known active players in the country to still be playing after two season-ending knee injuries).

After recovering from the first season-end ing knee injury, he bounced back to have an All-Conference USA season (Third Team). He looks to have the same bounce back this season.

Through seven games, Crawford is averag ing 13.0 points per game while shooting 53 percent from the field, 38 percent from three, and 83 percent from the foul line..

He has scored in double figures four times, including a season-high 22 points at Samford, the most since Feb. 5, 2021 at North Texas.

“threeston” willis

Keaston ... aka “Threeston” ... Willis made his presence known from beyond the three-point line in his first year with the Bulldogs last sea son. He ended up ranking in the top 50 in the country in three-point field goal percentage (39.2%) and three-pointers made (93). His 93 threes was the second most in program histo ry in a single season.

He is already off to a good pace this season, having knocked down 24 three-pointers through the first eight games.

The man has been a weapon from deep his entire collegiate career at Incarnate Word/LA Tech.

IMMEDIATE IMPACT FOR FROSH

Jordan Crawford had only one scholarship offer from a Division I college basketball pro gram ... and that was the home town school of Louisiana Tech.

The true freshman who won four state championships at nearby Simsboro High School has made an immediate impact for the Bulldogs.

He has started the last five games, and cur rently leads the team in assists per game at 4.4 and ranks tied for second at 2.0 steals per game.

He is currently one of only two freshman in the country (along with Cason Wallace of Ken tucky) to have at least 35 assists and 15 steals so far this season.

MTE SUCCESS

Practically every season, Louisiana Tech plays in a multi-team event. And practically every season, the Bulldogs go updated in said events.

LA Tech went 3-0 in the Samford MTE this season, winning road games at Alabama A&M and Samford plus a neutral site victory over UT Southern.

Over the last decade, the ‘Dogs are a com bined 31-6 in multi-team events.

He saw 20 minutes of action in the season opener against Mississippi College, register ing 15 points, three assists, and three steals.

He became the seventh Bulldog in program history to be named C-USA FOW and only the second to win the award in week one.

• Two-time All-Conference USA

• Louisiana Major College Player of the Year

• NABC First Team All-District 11

• Naismith Trophy Midseason Team

• C-USA Freshman of the Year

Despite going undrafted, he ended up signing a two-way contract with the Memphis Griz zlies where he made the opening day roster.

Junior was one of just 17 undrafted rookies to make an NBA opening day roster and became the first Bulldog since Erik McCree (2018 with Utah Jazz) to play in an NBA game.

back-to-back 24-win seasons

After going 24-8 in 2020-21, the Bulldogs matched their win total in 2021-22 with an overall record of 24-10.

LA Tech is one of only 10 Division I teams in the country to have recorded at least 24 victories in each of the last two seasons.

CRAWFORDS AND WILLIAMS

If you are seeing double with the last name on the jerseys, it is not you. Last season, the Bulldogs had a pair of Williams’ with Terran and Cobe. This season, there is the addition of having two Crawfords with Jordan and Isaiah.

They are just the 10th and 11th pair of Bull dogs to be on the roster at the same time with the same last name. This does mark the first time in program history that there are two sets of the same last name.

20-GAME LEAGUE SCHEDULE

With the departure of Southern Miss, Marshall, and Old Dominion to the Sun Belt, Conference USA went from a 14-team league to an 11team league.

As a result, the Bulldogs will take part in a 20game conference schedule for the first time in program history (had been an 18-game league schedule since 2014-15).

HOMETOWN KID

North Louisiana has seen its fair share of great basketball players. However, it is been rare to have a Bulldog from Louisiana Tech’s home town of Ruston.

And for the first time since 2008, a Bulldog calls Ruston home in Jordan Crawford. The guard was a four-time state champion at near bly Simsboro High School.

north carolina duo

The majority of Bulldogs have always hailed from the home state of Louisiana and the neighboring state of Texas. Of course, Florida has been a popular state to pick players from as well over the last decade or so.

This season though, the Bulldogs have the ad dition of Dravon Mangum and Quandre Bull ock, both of whom are from North Carolina.

Prior to this season, there had been only two Bulldogs to have ever called North Carolina home. That has doubled this season.

non-conference success

The Bulldogs produce strong non-conference seasons year in and year out, having tallied at least nine wins in eight of the last 10 seasons.

The Bulldogs victory over USM on Jan. 13, 2022 turned out to be their 100th C-USA victory. It took them only 145 games to get there, the second fastest of any team in league history.

About THE COWBOYS

Wyoming put an end to its four-game losing streak by defeating Texas A&M-Commerce on Tuesday, 91-76. The Cowboys had suffered close losses to Drake, Boston College, Santa Clara, and Grand Canyon prior to picking up a victory against the Lions.

The Cowboys came into the season with lofty expectations, having returned 85 percent of their scoring after winning 25 games a year ago, being ranked as high as No. 22 in the country and earning an at-large bid into the NCAA Tournament. They were picked second in the Mountain West preseason poll and re ceived top 25 votes in the preseason AP poll.

Wyoming has been hit with the injury bug this season, none more important than that of Gra ham Ike. The Mountain West Preseason Player of the Year suffered a lower leg injury prior to the season that has sidelined him so far. He av eraged 19.5 points and 9.6 rebounds per game last season in route to being named First Team All-Mountain West.

First Team All-MW guard Hunter Maldonado anchors the Cowboys, averaging 13.6 points per game. He had a stellar season in 2021-22, averaging 18.5 points and 6.3 assists per game.

The Cowboys will let it fly from three. They rank 18th in the country in three-point at tempts per game at 28.0.

Saturday will be the fifth meeting ever be tween LA Tech and Wyoming, a series that includes a home-and-home in 1991/1992 and two tournament matchups in the state of Wy oming in 1998 and 2011. The Cowboys have won all four by double digits.
