RUSTON, La. – Propelled by a five-run fifth inning, the Louisiana Tech Softball team defeated Missouri State 7-3 in the series finale on Sunday afternoon at Dr. Billy Bundrick Field.
With the victory, the Bulldogs took the series against the Bears, three games to one.
In the fifth inning, a sacrifice fly from Caroline Easom tied the game at 3-3 before a pair of two-out two-run doubles from Nicole Hammoude and Alannah Rogers put the game away for good.
Alexis Gilio continued her scorching hot performance at the plate by going 2-4 with a run scored and an RBI. Gilio registered multiple hits during all four games in the series. Easom went 1-2 with two RBI, and Katelin Cooper had a 1-2 day with a walk. Claire Raley also recorded a hit in the win and scored twice.
Brook Melnychuk earned the win by striking out four and allowing just one run on one hit and a walk in 5.1 innings of relief to improve to 3-2 on the season. Alyssa Martin started the game for the Bulldogs. Martin struck out two while allowing two runs (one unearned) and four hits in 1.2 innings pitched.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Alyssa Martin made her second start of the season for Louisiana Tech, while Shelby Houchlei made her first start and appearance of the year for the Bears.
MSU centerfielder Abby Ford led off the game with a leadoff single to shortstop. Ford then advanced to second on a passed ball and moved to third on a deep flyout to right-center field from Olivia Krehbiel. With a runner on third and one out, head coach Josh Taylor elected to have the infield play in, which paid off as Tech shortstop Nicole Hammoude fielded a ground ball and threw out Ford at the plate. The Bears plated a run later in the inning when Ellie McCoy advanced to third on a passed ball and took home on a throwing error to make it 1-0 in favor of the guests.
In the bottom of the first, Alexis Gilio reached on an error by the MSU second baseman Kelsie Lewis and advanced to second on a wild pitch to give Tech a runner in scoring position with one out. Missouri State left fielder Ellie McCoy made a diving catch to rob Caroline Easom of an extra-base hit and double up Gilio on the play to end the inning.
Missouri State (3-9) first baseman, Chloe Merced, reached on a wild pitch on strike three to start the second inning. She would advance to second and third on a sacrifice bunt before scoring on a single to left field by Kayla Ulrich to give the Bears a 2-0 lead. Brook Melnychuk entered in relief of Martin with two outs in the inning and struck out Krehbiel to escape the jam. Aubree Seaney walked to lead off the home half for the Dogs’ only baserunner in the frame.
Melnychuk worked a 1-2-3 third, highlighted by snagging a comebacker and flipping it to first for the second out of the frame.
Makenzi Swick relieved Houchlei to pitch the third. Katelin Cooper walked with one out in the inning and advanced to second on a throwing error that came on a fielder’s choice to put two runners on with one out. Gilio singled up the middle to bring home Cooper for the Dogs’ first run before Easom singled through the left side to score Raley and tie the game at 2-2.
Both teams were retired in order in the fourth.
The Bears took the lead in the top of the fifth courtesy of an RBI single from Annie Mueller to go in front 3-2. However, the MSU lead would be shortlived, as Tech answered with five runs in the bottom of the fifth. Claire Raley laid down a perfectly executed bunt single to reach with one out in the inning. Gilio followed with a single to right field for her second hit of the game to advance Raley, who would later take third on an obstruction call before Caroline Easom tied the game with a sacrifice fly down the left field line. Seaney reached on an error a battler later that allowed Gilio to move to second. Nicole Hammoude then crushed a two-run double to center field that put the Bulldogs back in front, 5-3. Following a Kylie Neel walk, Rogers stepped to the plate and doubled off the wall in right-center, scoring Hammoude and Neel to increase the LA Tech lead to 7-3.
In the top of the sixth, Melnychuk faced the minimum while striking out two. Katelin Cooper led off the bottom half with a single for the lone hit of the inning.
Melnychuk retired seven-straight Bears with a 1-2-3 seventh to earn her third win and improve to 3-2 this season.

JOSH TAYLOR
HEAD COACH
Josh Taylor enters his third season as head coach of the Louisiana Tech Softball program.
In year two, Taylor led LA Tech to a 32-24 overall record with a 13-11 mark in Conference USA play. The Bulldogs went 16-9 at Dr. Billy Bundrick Field. LA Tech swept SEMO in the season-opening series, outscoring the Redhawks 18-1 overall to increase their home winning streak to 15 games which was the nation’s fifth longest home winning streak at the time.
Wins over NCAA Regional Participant and A-SUN Champions Central Arkansas and NC State highlighted non-conference play. The Bulldogs’ win over the Wolfpack was the first over a power five opponent since Feb. 24, 2019.
Taylor led LA Tech to an eight-game winning streak from April 14-April 28. During the win streak LA Tech swept UTSA and UTEP and also defeated Grambling in a midweek before earning a thrilling 4-3 series-opening win over NCAA Tournament Participant Charlotte.
In the circle, the Bulldogs posted a 2.38 ERA which was the lowest by a Louisiana Tech pitching staff since 2002.
Offensively, Kylie Neel and Katelin Cooper both cracked the top-10 in single season RBI with 45 and 42 respectively. In addition to leading the team in RBI, Neel led Tech in batting average (.351), doubles (11), total bases (81) and slugging percentage (.536).
Numerous Bulldogs took home postseason honors as pitcher Allie Floyd was named CUSA Freshman of the Year and Sierra Sacco (first team), Neel (second team) and Mary Martinez (freshman team) all earned CUSA honors.
In addition to conference awards, Neel was named second-team NFCA All-Mideast Region while Floyd was selected to the NFCA All-Mideast Region third team.
It didn’t take long for Josh Taylor to make his mark in Ruston in 2022.
In only his first year as the Louisiana Tech head coach, Taylor was named the Conference USA Coach of the Year after guiding the program to the 2022 C-USA regular season title.
It was quite a turnaround.
Taylor, who was named head coach by VP and Director of Athletics Eric Wood on June 7, 2021, took a Tech team that finished 22-30 in 2021 and orchestrated one of the biggest turnarounds in the collegiate softball world in 2022.
Under Taylor’s guidance, the Bulldogs posted a mark of 39-20, including a 18-6 record in league games to claim only the second regular season conference title in program history. Tech started league play 0-3 but then won 18 of its final 21
C-USA games, including the final 11 of the season to win the crown by one game.
The 39 wins were tied for the seventh most in program history and the 18 league wins were the second most in program history.
Not bad for a program that was picked to finish seventh in the C-USA Preseason Coaches Poll, a team that didn’t have a single representative on the 15-player preseason all-conference team.
It took an unforgettable two-out, five-run rally in the bottom of the seventh inning of the season finale against Southern Miss, but Katelin Cooper’s bases-clearing, walk-off triple gave Tech an 8-7 win on Senior Day Sunday at Dr. Billy Bundrick Field sending the Tech players, coaches and fans into a celebration that won’t soon be forgotten in Ruston.
Taylor’s impact on the Tech program was also seen on the stat sheet. As a team, Tech raised its batting average by 60 points (.233 to .293) and almost doubled its run production from the previous season. In the circle, Tech lowered its team earned run average significantly, finishing with a sub-3.00 ERA.
Outfielder Sierra Sacco was named the Conference USA and the Louisiana Sports Writers Association State Freshman of the Year while being one of 10 finalists for the Schutt Sports/ NFCA National Freshman of the Year Award. Sacco, who didn’t sign with Tech until after Taylor arrived on campus in July, broke the program’s single season hits record while ranking among the national leaders in hits, batting average, on-base percentage, stolen bases and runs scored.
Senior Audrey Pickett and junior Amanda Gonzalez joined Sacco on the C-USA first team while Brooke Diaz, Madie Green and Kylie Neel were all named second team all-conference. Sacco, Gonzalez and Diaz were all named all-Mideast Region.
Taylor came to Ruston after spending the past eight seasons at the University of Nevada, including the last five as the head coach of the Mountain West program.
He led the Wolf Pack to a 27-16 record in 2021, including a program record 16 wins in Mountain West action. Nevada posted a non-conference win over No. 2 ranked Washington, a team that finished with 45 wins and an appearance in the Super Regional vs. No. 1 Oklahoma. Nevada won seven of its eight Mountain West series, including a sweep against second place UNLV.
The Wolf Pack hit .289 as a team with five players batting over .300 while recording a school record 62 stolen bases. During his five years as the head coach, all five of his teams finished in the top 10 in program history in batting average. Defensively, his 2019 team shattered the school record for fielding percentage and fewest errors in a season.

Dr. Billy Bundrick Field
Dr. Billy Bundrick and Dr. Robert Mack Caruthers started a lifelong friendship in the first grade in Shreveport more than 70 years ago. They became good friends – “the very best of friends,” according to Dr. Bundrick – during their years together at Alexander Elementary School, Hamilton Terrace Junior High School and Byrd High School.
Eventually, after Dr. Bundrick transferred to Louisiana Tech following a freshman year at Texas A&M, the duo became roommates at Hale Hall. And although each pursued his own career direction – medicine for Bundrick and engineering professor for Caruthers – their passion for Louisiana Tech bonded their friendship until the passing of Dr. Caruthers in 2016.
Now, the two men’s names are being reunited.
Louisiana Tech announced today that the new softball field will be named in honor of the highly-decorated orthopedic surgeon who has given more than 40 years of his professional career to his alma mater.
The Dr. Billy Bundrick naming of the softball field comes thanks to a financial donation towards the facility from Dr. Bundrick’s daughter, Margaret, and her husband, Jim Davison.
“As the university was seeking assistance in the development of a state-of-the-art sports complex for our softball team, Jim and I were thrilled to help,” said Margaret Davison. “When Brooks Hull mentioned the naming of the soccer field in memory of Dad’s good friend, Dr. Caruthers, I knew this was the perfect opportunity to honor dad for a lifetime of dedication to Louisiana Tech.”
Dr. Billy Bundrick Field sits just west (less than 50 yards away) of Dr. Robert Mack Caruthers Soccer Field, the new home for the Lady Techster soccer program. The announcement of the naming of the soccer field came in October 2019 following a gift from Tim Cutt (1983, Petroleum Engineering) and his wife Carolyn in honor of the former Petroleum Engineering professor.
“Robert Mack and I go back to the first grade,” said Dr. Bundrick. “All the way through high school and Tech. We go way back. Robert Mack was a fine, fine man and a friend. The very best.”
Louisiana Tech has honored Dr. Bundrick in just about every conceivable way over the past four decades, and he has more than earned each one. The resume of the Bulldog football letter winner (1957-59), team captain, and longtime LA Tech team orthopedic doctor (1973-2013) is loaded with accolades from both the University and the athletics realm.
“Dr. Billy Bundrick has been a steadfast supporter of Louisiana Tech since his days on the football field,” said Louisiana Tech President Les Guice. “Seeing him work with our student-athletes to help them stay healthy has been a highlight of my time at Tech, and I can think of few better ways to honor his legacy than this.”
Although he first made a name for himself playing for legendary coach
Joe Aillet and the Bulldogs, Dr. Bundrick has spent more than half of his life taking care of Louisiana Tech’s male and female student-athletes.
In addition to donating countless hours to Louisiana Tech’s student-athletes over a four-decade stretch, Dr. Bundrick has also supported the University and its athletic department financially. He and his wife Linda are members of the Team Tech $1 Million Lifetime Giving Club, an elite membership that includes less than 15 couples who have each given more than $1 million during their lifetime.
According to Dr. Bundrick, he and his family’s association with Louisiana Tech over the years has been a big part of his life. He’s had a passion for Lady Techster softball program and has been an integral part of numerous facility projects within the program over the past decade.
“Louisiana Tech has meant everything … to me and my family,” said Dr. Bundrick. “It’s a real honor (to have the stadium named after me). It’s a real honor. The field is going to be great. All of the new facilities are. This is just a special honor.”
Dr. Bundrick was enshrined into the Louisiana Tech Athletics Hall of Fame as part of the class of 1986. He has earned numerous other honors, including the Louisiana Tech Alumnus of the Year (1980), the Distinguished Alumni Award for the College of Life Sciences (1986), Centennial 100 Distinguished Alumni (1994) and Tower Medallion recipient (1995).
He served as the University Foundation Board President (1981-83) and was a Privileged Director of the Foundation Board (1986-87). He received an honorary doctorate in 1984.
“Although I am relatively new to the Louisiana Tech Family, I am very familiar with Dr. Bundrick’s legacy to this University and its athletic department,” said LA Tech VP and Director of Athletics Eric Wood. “He and his family have such deep ties to Louisiana Tech. Dr. Bundrick had a great impact on thousands of our student-athletes over the years, and he will now have his name forever grace our beautiful new softball field.”

2024 SIGNEES
RUSTON, La. – Louisiana Tech head coach Josh Taylor announced the addition of three student-athletes to the Bulldog softball program as Elena Heng (Airline HS/ Bossier City, La.), Laney Johnson (North Desoto HS/Stonewall, La.) and Ryleigh Shull (Lincoln County HS/Hamlin, W.V.) all signed national letters of intent.
“We are really excited about this class,” Taylor said. “We are bringing in a left-handed pitcher, right-handed pitcher, and a left-handed bat with speed, which fits exactly what we need with this class. Ryleigh and Laney are dynamic pitchers in very different ways in the circle. We are excited to combo those two for years to come. Elena is a dynamic player that brings difference-making speed to the table. All three of our signees are fantastic people. The caliber of human beings we bring in with these three is off the chart. As students, they have incredible GPAs and test scores, and their softball IQ is also off the charts. We are extremely excited to welcome these three in.”
Heng’s athleticism has allowed her to excel at numerous positions during her three seasons at Airline High School, where she has played under former LA Tech standout Katie Smith. She was named the district MVP and first-team all-district shortstop in 2023 after posting a .465 batting average. In 2022, Heng was named first-team all-district and all-state as a center fielder. As a freshman in 2021, she earned first-team all-district recognition as a catcher while also taking home honorable-mention all-state honors while helping lead the Vikings to a runner-place state finish.
“We are excited to welcome Elena to Ruston and the LA Tech Softball family,” Taylor said. “Elena brings a solid left-handed bat and speed to our program. She is a dynamic player who understands softball and loves to compete. We could not be more excited to welcome Elena to Louisiana Tech.”
Heng played travel ball for the Titans Baker in 2023 and posted a .406 batting average. In addition to softball, she also participated in archery, cross country, and indoor and outdoor track.
“I love the atmosphere at Tech, and they have a great program that I am looking forward to studying,” Heng said. “Nothing feels more at home than Louisiana Tech.”
Johnson is an in-state talent from North Desoto High School, where she has helped lead the Griffins to three consecutive state titles (2021, 2022, 2023) while lettering four times for head coach Tim Whitman.
“We are excited to welcome Laney to Ruston and the LA Tech Softball family,” head coach Josh Taylor said. “Laney is a tall right-handed pitcher who also brings an explosive bat. She is also a wonderful student who will excel in the classroom. We could not be more excited to welcome Laney to Louisiana Tech and our softball program.”
Johnson has brought home an abundance of accolades during her prep career. The right-handed pitcher was named the District MVP and 4A Louisiana Player of the Year in 2023 after leading the Griffins to a 35-2 record on the way to their third consecutive state title. She is a three-time LSHAA all-state and LSWA All-State selection while being named All-Area Player of the Year twice. The Stonewall, La., product played travel ball for Impact Gold Tate 18U. Johnson chose the Lady Techsters over Oregon State, Central Arkansas, ULM, Kennesaw State, McNeese State, and many others.
“I chose to come to Louisiana Tech because it is the perfect place for me,” said Johnson. “It is near home, and the coaches and facilities are top-notch. I am glad Louisiana Tech is my future home, and I can’t wait to be there soon.”
Shull comes to Ruston from Hamlin, W.V., where she prepped at Lincoln County High School while playing Travel Ball for Team North Carolina Hinde. Shull is a dominant left-handed pitcher and is nationally ranked as the No. 36 player in the 2024 class by Extra Innings Softball. She earned first-team all-state honors in both 2022 and 2023.
“We are excited to welcome Ryleigh to Ruston and the LA Tech Softball family,” Taylor said. “Ryleigh is a dynamic left-handed pitcher with command of multiple pitches and understands how to get hitters out. She also brings with her an unbelievable work ethic and strong values. Ryleigh is also an outstanding student who will excel in the classroom. We could not be more excited to have Ryleigh put on the LA Tech uniform and represent this wonderful university and softball program.
Shull posted a 1.2 ERA, fanning 93 batters and limiting opponents to just a .233 batting average against her while pitching for Lincoln County in 2023. She also wreaked havoc at the plate with a .432 batting average and six home runs. Shull batted .406 with 35 home runs and eight RBI as a sophomore while posting a 2.76 ERA in the circle as a sophomore helping lead the Panthers to a third-place finish in the WVSSAC Class AAA State Tournament.
The West Virginia product also put up impressive numbers in travel ball with a 2.2 ERA and 55 strikeouts in 54.2 innings pitched during the summer of 2023. Shull was dominant during the PGF Premier Nationals, where she struck out 16 batters without yielding a single run and limiting opposing hitters to a .109 average in 13.2 innings of work.
“I chose Louisiana Tech because of the outstanding academics available, the beautiful campus and community, and the incredible coaches,” Shull said. “The growing softball program and family-like atmosphere made the decision a no-brainer.”
