Of course, not everyone showed up in unwavering support of Secretary Clinton. Like most public political gatherings, the rally welcomed its fair share of protesters too. But for me, their presence didn’t cause a commotion; their voices were not a distraction. Instead, I fed off their enthusiasm, their passionately expressed convictions. All of it filled me with a great sense of pride – pride to reside in a country where public protest is permitted and pride to live in a city that peacefully supports it. The interview with Secretary Clinton in this issue was not the result of a pre-arranged sit-down or a chance encounter after the rally. A Survival Guide to a Stress Free Start to School Backpacks. Bedtime. Homework. No Need for Stress: We’ve Got You Covered. Although many families may not be quite ready to say goodbye to their flip-flops and swimming pools, like it or not, the dog days of summer are coming to an end. And in a few short weeks, Pennsylvania’s children will be heading back to the classroom. The weeks leading up to the start of the new school year can bring about feelings of anticipation and anxiety – for both children and their parents. But with a little bit of planning, families can be ready for the transition, and children can make a relatively smooth entrance back to the classroom. Apply some of this advice to help your entire family have a successful start to the new school year:

1 Reset the Bedtime Before

Longer days, family vacations, and lack of morning commitments often result in a much more lax approach to bedtime during the summer months. It seems like a lot of work, but parents can also reduce the potential for future stress by planning out their schedules and updating their calendars for the entire school year. Review the bus schedules and plan the routines around what time children need to be at the bus stop or dropped off at school. Be sure caregivers are clear on the bus schedule as well. And although many children will bring home a district calendar the first few days of school, almost all district calendars will be posted online before the first day. If possible, take the time to record any early dismissals, late starts, or holidays into the family

6 Establish the Homework Routine

While paperwork and daily schedules will help tremendously, one of the most important routines that can be established is how and when children will complete their homework. Parents can avoid headaches and teach children responsibility and self-reliance by developing and sticking with homework routines. For example, have children show a parent or caregiver their homework assignment as soon as they get home from school. Decide upon a dedicated time to complete the work—keep it consistent throughout the week—and check to see the work was completed. A great way to encourage accountability in older children is to allow them to participate in the development of their own expectations. Children involved in the creation of their own homework expectations tend to take more responsibility for following them than those who had no say in how manage the task.

7 Strategize the School Supply Shopping

For many families, the trip to the store for new clothing and a backpack has become a mid-August tradition, but it doesn’t have to be expensive.

Back-to-school sales are in full swing by mid-summer, so be sure to shop around for the best deals. Before heading out, get a sense of what each store offers in terms of discounts by checking their websites. Also, when possible, take advantage of online shopping from stores that offer free shipping. In addition to back-to-school fashion and accessories, a thoughtful approach to school supply shopping can help parents spend far less. Before buying anything, take inventory of what is already in the home. Many families realize they have much of what they need left over from the year before, stuffed away in drawers and cabinets. Figure out what children need for the new school year, and create a list. Parents can keep the list handy for anytime they are out shopping. As they come across deals, the remove items off the list as they purchase them. Many schools and teachers will provide a list for parents, so be sure to check the school’s website or call the school secretary for some guidance of what to purchase before heading out to the store. A Second Language: A Valuable and Essential Skill By Amanda Zimmerman

Each year before the holiday break, Northeastern High School in Manchester, PA’s Sociedad Honoraria Hispánica visits Shallow Brook Intermediate School to spread holiday cheer and to promote an interest in the Spanish language by singing villancicos—Spanish Christmas carols—in the hallway. One year, as the familiar words of José Feliciano’s“¡Feliz Navidad!” filled the hallway, a fourth grader raced out of his classroom and into the hallway, shouting, “¡Yo hablo español!” He seemed not only elated to hear his native language but also determined to let the group know of the special bond they shared with their knowledge of English and Spanish. In the United States, where, according to the Pew Research Center, more than 37 million people speak Spanish, many would not expect the kind of reaction that the little boy had, let alone consider knowledge of English and Spanish special. Or would they? A 2001 Gallup Poll reveals that only one in four United States Americans—that´s a mere one-fourth of the population—can hold a conversation in a second language. These low numbers can likely be attributed to the poll´s finding that “most Americans believe that a second language is a valuable, although not necessarily essential, skill.” Given these findings, it should come as no surprise that Pennsylvania has a lack of bilingual education programs. According to the Center for Applied Linguistics as referenced by WITF, only eight school districts in the state offer bilingual English/Spanish education to their students. Locally, only Manheim Township School District, Lancaster Mennonite School, and the School District of Lancaster have bilingual programs. Perhaps the survey participants and

the schools devoid of bilingual education programs would change their perspectives with a better understanding of the numerous benefits. Aside from the obvious ability to communicate with people who speak another language, there are cognitive, financial, social/ emotional, and global benefits to bilingual education—especially in English and Spanish. The cognitive benefits are numerous. Dr. Joseph Mercola, an alternative medicine proponent, osteopathic physician, and web entrepreneur, explains that a bilingual’s brain not only looks different, but also functions distinctly from that of a monolingual speaker. Because speaking two languages requires greater brainpower and alters neurological structures, there is more grey and white matter in a bilingual’s brain. Increased grey matter allows for an augmented ability to think abstractly, making bilinguals better at understanding and solving word problems, using logic, multi-tasking, and offering flexible approaches to problems than monolinguals. Dr. Mercola also suggests that bilinguals are more adept at discerning relevant from

irrelevant or biased information, retaining information, and making decisions. Such heightened cognition even makes a bilingual less likely than a monolingual to develop Alzheimer’s disease or to suffer from other forms of mental decline. And, these are just a few of the cognitive benefits that extend equally to those who are educated bilingually from birth and those who become bilingual later in life. Employers seem to be aware of the heightened cognition among bilinguals. In today’s global economy, bilinguals are in demand and have more job opportunities. With greater job opportunities comes greater pay. On average, bilinguals in the United States can earn anywhere from five to twenty percent more than monolinguals. According to a University of Florida study (2000), bilingual Hispanic employees in Miami earn up to $7,000 more than their English-only peers. In today’s global economy, the global awareness and biculturalism that is often inherent of bilinguals is invaluable. Socially and emotionally, bilingual education allows for the preservation of lines of communication with family members who may be monolingual. It also places bilinguals in an atmosphere where two languages, and often cultures, are valued, maintained, and fostered. This leads to increased self-esteem. It also breads understanding and compassion in a society that can often seem devoid of these attributes. Given the countless cognitive, financial, social/emotional, and global benefits to bilingual education, that fourth grader was right to be excited about his knowledge of English and Spanish. Perhaps if more schools can recognize the benefits and perceive a student’s knowledge of English and Spanish as not simply a valuable skill, but an essential one, the payoffs for those with an excitement for and an interest in bilingual education could be limitless.

Cada año luego de las vacaciones , Northeastern High School en Manchester, con su Sociedad Honoraria Hispánica de Pennsylvania visita a la Escuela Intermedia Shallow Brook para expandir la felicidad navideña y promover el interés en el idioma español al cantar villancicos -Canticos navideños en español- en el pasillo. Secretary Hillary Rodham Clinton, Democratic Candidate for the United States of America The ferocity of the current political climate has left many Latinos feeling uncertain, alienated and even angry. More than ever before, social media has brought many of us to a state of propaganda overload. In our search to find clarity and resolve, we reached out. And she reached back. With complete transparency, Latino Connection is incredibly proud to share how Secretary of State and Democratic Candidate for President of the United States Hillary Rodham Clinton will address the issues surrounding education, immigration, healthcare and industry. As explained by Jorge Silva, National Director of Hispanic Media for her campaign, Clinton’s plans focus on expanding opportunities for Pennsylvania’s Latinos to continue to create a solid foundation, for themselves and for their families. During our correspondence with her team, we learned more about Hillary Clinton than simply her position on the issues. We confirmed she is dear friend of Marc Antony’s and her favorite song of his is “Vivir Mi Vida.” Perhaps most importantly, we discovered that Hillary Clinton understands the value that the Latino community places on a personal connection. We asked her to speak directly to us, and to you. Therefore, in addition to Silva’s responses, it is a great honor to also share with you Hillary Clinton’s vision for our future—in her own words. LC: Education is one of the most important issues for Latinos today, yet many schools in America lack the resources and programs necessary to support the growing Latino demographic within Pennsylvania’s public schools. What plans do you have to address this issue to help young Latino children – many of whom begin school with no knowledge of English – receive the appropriate support to help them succeed?

JS: Every child deserves to receive a worldclass education, with good schools and good teachers, no matter what ZIP code they live in—starting with our youngest learners. Hillary believes we need to give parents the support they need to be their child’s first teachers, and make high-quality childcare and universal preschool available to every family.

Hillary will make sure no one is forced to give up their dream of going to college because they can’t pay for it. Over the last 20 years, the number of Latinas going to college has tripled—that’s something to celebrate! At the same time, Latinos are still less likely than their white peers to graduate, and nearly 70 percent of Latino students who do graduate leave school with debt. We need to provide more help to students who need it. So she's going to make community college free, make in-state public universities tuition-free for working families, and debt-free for all. And she'll help liberate the millions of people who are dealing with student debt right now.

Hillary knows also need to invest in our public schools. So she will launch a national campaign to lift up the profession of teaching. And to help all our students get the very best education, we’ll invest in bilingual

LC: Pennsylvania is home to a growing Latino population, including a strong migrant population in its southern counties. Beyond resources and supports for schools, what other plans do you have to help support adult education and transition programs to help our Spanish-speaking Pennsylvanians take full advantage of the educational and economic opportunities available to them? JS: We need to create an economy that works for everyone, not just those at the top. Something is very wrong when Latinos are 17 percent of our country’s population, but hold only 2 percent of its wealth. As President, Hillary will make it her mission to bring opportunity to every corner of Pennsylvania, and every corner of our country. Within her first 100 days, she’ll make bold new investments in infrastructure, manufacturing, clean energy, and small businesses to create good-paying jobs for all Americans—no matter what you look like, where you come from, or who you are. Hillary will work to pass comprehensive immigration reform with a path to full and equal citizenship—because this is a family issue, and an economic issue. And she'll fight to break down all the barriers that hold immigrants back from building a brighter future for themselves and their families. For starters, she'll create a National Office of Immigrant Affairs to ensure there is a dedicated place in the White House where immigrants and refugees can get the support they need. She'll also promote naturalization by expanding fee waivers, increasing access to language programs to help people boost their English proficiency, and helping the millions of people who are eligible for citizenship take that last step. 17

LC: Many view the Latino demographic – specifically those living in Pennsylvania – as the largest underserved population in healthcare. Many Latinos remain unclear on the procedures, regulations, and benefits to which they are entitled under the Universal Healthcare Act. Moving forward, what programs and resources will you put into place to educate the non-English speaking Hispanic population - which possess a $469 billion buying power - to fully understand the ins and outs of Health Care reform/Obamacare? JS: Hillary wants every family in this country to have the peace of mind that comes with quality, affordable health care. We’ve taken a big step forward with the Affordable Care Act, which is covering 4.2 million Latinos. But she knows that we have more work to do to bring down the out-of-pocket health care costs too many families are still struggling with, make prescription drugs more affordable, and bring health care to underserved populations, including Latinos. With help from Pennsylvanians, we can take on all these fights and more—and continue our work to help even more people get the health coverage they need. LC: We know you have been a huge advocate for the US Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, which represents 4.1 million Latino small businesses across the United States. The growing Latino demographic in PA also provides small and mid-size business with a tremendous opportunity – both through an expansive employment pool and an increased market share. How do you plan to connect Pennsylvania’s Latino workforce with job opportunities as well as support all

PA small businesses so they can develop and sustain effective programs to connect with potential Latino employees and end consumers? JS: Hillary has a special place in her heart for small businesses. Growing up, her father ran a small business printing fabric for draperies. He poured his heart and soul into that business, and he was able to provide a middle-class life for our family. Hillary wants to do more to support Latinoowned small businesses, which have created so many jobs and strengthened communities across America. As President, she will fight to level the playing field for Latino small business owners by cutting red tape, expanding access to capital, providing tax relief, expanding access to new markets, and investing $25 billion to support innovation in communities that need it the most. Small businesses are the backbone of our economy, and Hillary will be a president with the backbone to stand up for them. LC: The current political climate is one that has left many Latinos across Pennsylvania with feelings of uncertainty and fear. Politics aside, if given the opportunity to speak directly to these people, what would you say to restore their faith in the United States as a land that promises equal opportunity, safety, and economic prosperity to all those who choose to call it home? JS: Latinos represent one of the fastestgrowing groups in America. By 2050, communities of color will represent the majority of our population. So of course Latinos have a key role to play now and in shaping the future of America—because you

are America. And whether you’re Mexican, Puerto Rican, Cuban, Afro-Latino, from Central our South America, whether your family just arrived or whether you’ve been here since before the United States even existed, Hillary believed that we are brothers and sisters – not strangers or intruders – but our neighbors, our colleagues, our friends, our families. Latinos make our nation stronger, smarter, and more creative. Hillary will always have your back. In this election, let’s reject Donald Trump’s dangerous, divisive vision for America. Let’s build bridges, not walls. And let’s stand together because we’re stronger together. Clinton: I want us to really believe that America’s best years are ahead of us, but to understand the only way we’re going to make that a reality is by working together and recognizing that we’ve got to do more to make sure everybody is brought along. JS: Los Latinos representan uno de los grupos de crecimiento acelerado en America. Para el 2050, las comunidades de color representaran la mayoría de la población. Así que por supuesto que los Latinos tienen un rol esencial que jugar en la formación del futuro de América—porque tú eres América. Y sin importar si eres mexicano, Puertorriqueño, Cubano, Afro-Latino, de América del Sur o si tu familia acaba de llegar o si han estado desde antes que los estados unidos naciera, Hillary cree que somos hermanos y hermanas– no extraños o intrusos –sino vecinos, somos colegas, amigos , familias. Los Latinos hacen a nuestra nación más fuerte, lista y creativa. Hillary siempre te respaldara. En esta elección, vamos a rechazar la visión divisora que Donald Trump muestra a America. Vamos a crear puentes, no paredes. Y vamos a mantenernos unidos porque unidos somos más fuertes. Clinton: Yo quiero que nosotros creamos que los mejores años de America están delante de nosotros, pero debemos de entender que la única manera que vamos a hacer esto realidad es trabajando juntos y reconociendo que tenemos que hacer todo para que todos seamos incluidos en ello. Linking Parents and Education for Student Success By Jamie Marrs

Consider the following scenario: Every evening, Fernando Leon helps his son 11-yearold son Samuel—who has big dreams of one day becoming a doctor—complete his homework. Together, they can fly through the math problems. They always do those first. “Math’s easy,” explains Samuel, “And it runs in our family. It’s easy for my dad, too.” Once finished with math, the two begin to work through the English homework. On some nights, the assignments pose significant challenges. Grammar worksheets stump Samuel. And sometimes they stump Fernando too. It is scenarios like these that make the navigation of the public school system challenging for Spanish-speaking families. And for a child to see success, he or she must have the support of all the important stakeholders in their life. Teachers, administrators, and parents must find a way to work together to support today’s bilingual students succeed in the American school system. As they age, students ultimately hold the reins of their own education; however, there are concrete ways both parents and schools can help to steer America’s bilingual students in a direction of academic, and ultimately, lifelong success. The first step in creating a cooperative connection between families and the school is initiating an effective communication strategy. The students’ teachers and principals are the parents’ primary contacts with the school. Teachers are responsible for the students’ daily goings on and progress, while the building principal oversees behavioral issues and schoolwide procedures. All school personnel are there to help students and parents. They should be poised, willing, and happy to meet with parents and become familiar with students’ backgrounds in order to create a working relationship. Educators can provide helpful information and general resources for parents to become familiar with the educational system, as well as any

other needs that new families may have within the community. These materials are often available in the parents’ native language and can be gathered upon request. The school can support the development of this communication taking the first step and reaching out to parents, warmly inviting them in to what could be an intimidating situation, especially for parents with limited English. Ultimately, if both parties make a concerted effort, an authentic connection can be established that will set our bilingual students up for long-term success. Once this bridge has been built, it is important to maintain regular contact through a means that is appropriate and comfortable for the students, parents, and the school. For instance, parents and teachers need to make one other aware of any behavioral or learning difficulties demonstrated by the student so that problems can be addressed consistently at school and at home. It is especially important for parents and teachers of bilingual students to be able to identify which difficulties are the result of academic rigor and which are the result of a language barrier. English language learners are often misdiagnosed as having learning disabilities, and it is important that the proper services be obtained for each student. Frequent and regular effective communication builds relationships. These

relationships will help parents ensure that their children are receiving all of the services for which they are eligible. While bilingual students are capable of great work, it will take time for their English skills to match those of their monolingual peers, so developing sound communication will help students feel nurtured and supported – both at school and at home. In their publication, Classroom Instruction that Works with English Language Learner’s Facilitator’s Guide, authors Jane D. Hill and Cynthia L. Björk illustrate that it may take upwards of five to seven years for students to reach full second language acquisition. Content teachers are expected to differentiate instruction and assessment to help students find success at their current language levels. With a supportive environment on all fronts, bilingual students will feel encouraged and confident to accept the support and face their academic challenges with confidence. Outside of working directly with the teachers and administration, parents can also help their students by encouraging them to persevere, helping them with homework or securing a tutor or friend who can help. Parents can also work to creating a fully supportive environment at home by setting a routine time and place for homework to be done, and prioritizing education as an integral part of family life. Parents can seek out involvement for their student in an athletic, musical, or other co-curricular activities that can provide them with a natural way to make friends, to find a source of motivation, and to develop a sense of belonging. When parents support the full immersion into the school community, they undoubtedly can increase the potential for them to thrive. Clearly, Samuel and Fernando are doing everything they can at home, and by taking advantage of the supports available to them at school – both in the classroom and the community at-large– Samuel can increase his chances for success. However, it is ultimately a positive attitude toward collaboration and education from both sides of the chalkboard that has the largest impact on student learning and success. For The Leon family, this collaboration will pave the way for Samuel to do the work to achieve the future he dreams of creating.
