3 Burgers in West Michigan that you Must Try

Queso Jalapeño Burger The Burger Stella’s | 53 Commerce Ave SW, Grand Rapids, MI

If you like spice and you like kick and you also like tons of great flavor, you need to try the “Queso Jalapeño Burger” from Stella’s Restaurant in Grand Rapids, Michigan. They start out by giving you a 1/2 pound burger, cooked to your preference. Under the burger are hot pickled jalapeños while on top of the burger are two cheeses. These two cheeses are pepper jack cheese and a spicy queso cheese sauce. They also include a crispy and golden onion ring on the burger. A warm, white bun holds the massive sandwich together. The queso is house made and is a creamy sauce that brings in heat subtly while contrasting the instant heat from the jalapenos. Spicy mustard can also be requested, which brought in extra heat and flavor to this already great dish. “Chronic Fries” are served with this dish, which are french fries, but on a whole different level. What makes them chronic are the fact that they are golden and crispy, but also they have a spicy seasoning on top. The seasoning is similar to a dried buffalo spice, which really makes the fries pop with flavor in your mouth.

Brewery Vivant | 925 Cherry St SE, Grand Rapids, MI

Hamburgers are a timeless classic menu item. There are many varieties especially in Grand Rapids, Michigan, including one called “The Burger” at Brewery Vivant. This burger is not ordinary because it is a mix of house ground beef and bacon, topped with lettuce and tomato. This burger is also not minimal in size. It is a 1/2 pound of meat sandwiched in between a pretzel bun. Before you take your first bite, make sure to spread on the aioli and put on a pile of the sweet and savory bacon-onion marmalade. When you do take a bite, you are sure to get a flavor that is not like any run of the mill hamburger. You taste the care that was put into grinding the mix of meat and the toppings that compliment the dish. House cut fries, although Brewery Vivant names them frites, are served along side this burger and each one is a golden taste of deliciousness.

Bacon Cheeseburger

Corky’s Drive-In 1299 Lincoln Rd, Allegan, MI Nothing is more classic than a drive in restaurant/root beer stand that serves up great food, especially burgers. Corky’s is one of those locations in Allegan, Michigan and their Bacon Cheeseburger Basket is something your mouth will appreciate. The burger, while thin, is very juicy and packed with flavor. They top the hamburger with a slice of classic American cheese and very crispy, savory, flat top bacon. With the basket comes Battered Fries that were crispy and golden brown, something that will have you reaching for one right after another. Corky’s Onion rings are also a great menu item and are not to be missed. They are crunchy and fried to perfection! Some might even describe them as the best onion rings on the planet! When you order a drink from Corky’s, they are served in a plastic root beer mug, which really brings out the classic style of this burger joint.

Una Deliciosa Hamburgesas de West Michigan que Debes de Probar

Queso Jalapeño Burger Stella’s | 53 Commerce Ave SW, Grand Rapids, MI

S

World-Renowned Pianist Marc-André Hamelin to Perform in Kalamazoo

Chenery Auditorium 714 S. Westnedge Ave, Kalamazoo, MI

arc-André Hamelin, ranked among the elite pianists of the world, will perform at Chenery Auditorium, 714 S. Westnedge Ave, Kalamazoo, MI, on Saturday, November 5, 2016 at 8pm, as part of The Gilmore’s Piano Masters Series. Hamelin is respected as one of the most “prolific, technically meticulous and programmatically adventurous pianists” (WQXR) in the world. With more than 70 albums on the Hyperion Label, he is considered a master of the classical repertoire as well as an advocate of neglected music from the 19th and 20th centuries and of contemporary music. Anne Midgette of the Washington Post describes Hamelin’s playing as a “kaleidoscope of permutations.” She says Hamelin is always “looking for ways to express everything [he] is thinking, pushing up against the limits of the keyboard and its dynamics.” For Midgette, Hamelin plays with a scientific-like precision, but he can “thunder out the fireworks more ardently, and loudly, than any 20-year-old wunderkind.” Today Hamelin is recognized by fans and colleagues alike for his “brilliant musical mind, with total recall and a seemingly encyclopedic memory,” according to Masumi Rostad of the Pacifica Quartet. Hamelin is also known for his “intrepid exploration” of rare works, and in an article by the Chicago Tribune, Hamelin muses that he always carries an extra suitcase when traveling in case he finds an uncommon book, score, or “musical nugget.” Tickets start at $30 ($6 for students), and may be purchased at The Gilmore’s box office, located on the first floor of the Epic Center in downtown Kalamazoo, by phone at (269) 359-7311, or online at thegilmore.org. There will be a pre-concert talk by Zaide Pixley, Emeritus Professor of Music at Kalamazoo College, at 7 PM.

With a full line up of tap beers and full plates of food, they are one of the most respected and recognizable joints in the Grand Rapids, Michigan brew scene. 1893 is when the journey began and GRBC opened up for business. Starting out as a brewery, they had a successful run, until prohibition stalled the production. Go forward 79 years and in 2012 is when they re-opened shop in the same area, but not the same block of the original. Not only does the brewery pride itself on brewing beer and cooking food, but also recycling is a huge element that they focus on. They also keep locality within their foundation by re-using supplies to construct and by decorating with local artwork. I had an unusual burger at GRBC, with condiments and a vessel that set it apart from any other burger. With 1/2 pound of meat, which one half was enough to fill me up, the condiments included jalapeño pepper jelly and peanut butter. Yes creamy, sweet, rich, peanut butter. Also on the sandwich was thick cut bacon, and smoked cheese was an additional option, but I did not have any on mine. The meat patty and it’s dressings were sandwiched between 2 pieces of Texas toast,

english which was buttery and golden. All of these great ingredients made up the PB & J burger. House made french fries came with, which had a great seasoning blend on them and complimented the sweetness of the burger. Normally, I do not go for craft beer, but I decided to give it a try, after all, it is the Grand Rapids Brewing Co. My waitress/bartender served me two different samples, one a lighter beer and one a fruitier beer, almost a cider. I chose the light beer. It had a champagne element and crispness with each sip. Golden in color, it did not foam much on top, and had a sweet finish to it. Overall, this brewery stood out to me as being unique and a definite one to return to. It was hard to make a decision as far as what to order because it was between choosing good or better. There were at least 5 other dishes on the menu that I would have loved to have tried. I would have further explored the lighter beer menu and would have liked to have tried some of the ciders as well. The staff was great and the atmosphere made you feel right at home in such a great city.

New Holland is known – thanks to Mad Hatter IPA and the Hatter Family IPAs – for an obsession with hops. Therefore, an IPA with an even more abundant hop flavor was a clear next step and a great opportunity for New Holland’s brewers to push the boundaries of hop usage while still providing an amazingly enjoyable drinking experience. New Holland is so excited about this Double IPA, and test batches have been received so positively, Hoptronix will debut as part of New Holland’s year-round lineup. “Hoptronix is a beer we have had a lot of fun with. From the beer itself to the graphics and planned launch parties. We focused on bringing forward the bold flavors of Mosaic hops in a way that will thrill hop lovers everywhere.” said Joel Petersen, VP of Marketing. “We brought our hop game to the next level using huge amounts of Mosaic hops to tickle the tongue with bitter flavors and then delight the drinker with a clean, balanced finish. This beer will surprise you and leave you wanting more. The retro graphics bring us to a time when technology was emerging and pushing the limits of what could be done with video games (and it’s also a heck of a lot of fun to play with).” .............................................................................

LILA DOWN’S PREMIERED POWERFUL NEW SINGLE “THE DEMAGOGUE”

LILA DOWNS PRESENTÓ SU NUEVO SENCILLO "EL DEMAGOGO"

english Mexican American star Lila Downs premiered a new bilingual protest song titled “The Demogogue” at the “Rise Up As One” concert. The free outdoor concert billed as a “celebration of music and unity” was broadcasted live from the U.S./Mexico border in Tijuana/San Diego on Univision and Fusion Networks.

Lila’s new song “The Demagogue” recalls the 1960s folk spirit of artists like Bob Dylan and Joan Baez while expressing her concern with the current U.S. elections and the escalation of rhetoric by one specific candidate for the Presidency. The song is at the same time her call to action - a rally for her vast audience to express themselves by voting on November 8. The single is available on all digital music platforms starting today.

"Rise Up As One" es un evento gratuito al aire libre que celebra la música y la unión. Entre los artistas invitados este año destacaron Natalia Lafourcade, Carlos Vives, Juanes, Los Tigres Del Norte, Andra Day y Jorge Drexler, por mencionar algunos.

Lila recently expressed her views on this subject on such broadcast programs as BBC2’s ‘Newsnight’ and ‘Al Punto’ with Jorge Ramos. “I worry that 40% of voters are supporting this man. How did this happen?” the singer commented. Lila Downs has one of the world’s most singular voices and innovative approaches to music. Born in the state of Oaxaca, Lila grew up in both Minnesota and Mexico, constantly moving between the two cultures. Throughout her storied career, she has performed in such esteemed stages as Carnegie Hall, the Hollywood Bowl, the White House and the Academy Awards.

GERARDO ORTIZ PLEADS GUILTY A new era begins in the musical career of the famous composer and performer Gerardo Ortiz. With creativity and strength as key disciplines, he continues composing his hits. "The formula is to give the public what it wants to hear, with the highest possible quality," comments the Regional Mexican idol. If anything Ortiz has demonstrated throughout his artistic career, an evolution in his songs ranging from the most romantic and escalating to the strong, progressive and picturesque corridos of his culture. The table is served to give way to his highly anticipated upcoming album, Comeré Callado, and the first course in this new stage begins with "Regresa Hermosa" (Return to me, beautiful). "Regresa Hermosa" is a loud scream full of pain and regret while extending a plea of return. Admitting that if you fight or resist the emotion in your heart the pain builds up until it explodes. Defense mechanisms have fallen and the only solution is to seek forgiveness and await the outcome. Ortiz shows in this new proposal a certain emotion that is part of the challenge of each artist to follow a line of growth without losing the essence of their musical genre.

Change Up Your Chili by: Maple Leaf Farms

C

hilly nights are the perfect time to pull out your favorite soup or stew recipe. Settle down with a blanket while a big pot of chili simmers on the stove. Warm, hearty and flavorful, chili is a classic comfort food, and it’s easy to customize with your favorite flavor combinations. Whether you prefer it spicy or mild, with or without beans, you can develop your own signature style. For chili connoisseurs, ground beef is usually the go-to meat, but try a new take on an old favorite by adding ground duck to your chili for something creative. Duck has the robust, red-meat texture of beef but with the lean nutritional benefits of other poultry. Farm-raised white Pekin duck has less saturated fat than beef and a mild flavor that's not considered gamey. Plus, it’s versatile and complements a variety of dishes. Substitute duck in your favorite version of chili or try this Duck Chili. Like many chili recipes, this one tastes even better the next day, making it a great dish to make ahead of time and reheat when needed. Find other duck recipes and more information about cooking with duck at mapleleaffarms.com.
