Local eats: Mi Casa Restaurante by: Louise Harris

W

e were excited about Mi Casa Restaurante's grand opening on April 1 at 334 Burton St. SW in Grand Rapids, Mich. We were hopeful for good food because we knew the Madera family who owned the restaurant. The Madera family always sell quality products in their supermarket and know the food business. We were anticipating a good meal. We were not disappointed. We ordered Consome Sancocho, a traditional Dominican stew. The main dish was ‘Chicharron con Chips de platano’, or Pork Fried Skin with Plantain chips; Arroz con gandules, a type of rice; Salsa de Ajo with mayo; Salsa de Ajo with ketchup; Salad and Garlic Salsa with Salt. We were impressed when the stew came to the table in a molcajete bowl. We soon learned the stew was the best representation of food you could get 12 FARANDULAMI.COM | MAY 2016 |

on the island. The meal gave our taste buds a sensual experience that we couldn’t get anywhere else. We immediately brought up images of the Dominican Republic in our minds, which added to our enjoyment. The other foods didn’t disappoint us either. We enjoyed every morsel we consumed during the visit. Special guests of the restaurant visited on March 31, and the public tried the food the next day. All of those who attended the two-day grand opening participated in a truly Dominican experience. We expect great things from the restaurant in the next few months. We recommend you attend and experience it for yourself. The restaurant is open Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and on Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Visit the Facebook page for more information. www.facebook.com/

A

What’s True Love?

Romanos 5:7-8 (NVI)

W

e live in a world that gives us all kinds of messages about what true love is. The TV shows, movies and books we read all portray love in so many different ways. Sometimes with all the different portrayals of love, its hard to really determine what true love is. So the help clear it up, we’re going to talk about three things true love is. True love has its foundation in Jesus – The most important thing in a relationship is the other person’s feelings toward Jesus. If the person you’re dating doesn’t love Jesus like you do, run away from the relationship. It is never a good decision to become involved with someone that doesn’t love God like you do. This will set you up for lots of heartache in the future.

FIND YOUR PLACE

o you believe music is everything you need? If music is what you crave for then Xsizim can offer you the right amount of dose that can keep your spirits high. Xsizim created his own story from the basement of his parent’s home when he was 19 and has come a long way to be one of the upcoming names in the field of music. Experimenting with different genres of music and learning the tricks of the trade, Xsizim started producing music and came up with his first ever single ‘Nadia’, an electro house track. By 2015, Xsizim had already re leased 7 singles and his first 2015 release ‘Bet You Wanna’ provided him with the publicity and exposure he deserved. With growing fan base around the world and in the United States, Xsizim decided to do solo projects rather than being a part of any band. In 2016, he released ‘Find Your Place’ album and has been working with various artists on multiple projects. Xsizim has also been Djing because of his undying passion for music. Xsizim has also been a part of the Hispanic band ‘Los Tribaleroz’ now known as ‘ La Furia Del Ritmo’, but later decided to work on individual albums and singles. FarándulaMag: When did you start DJing - and what or who were your early passions and influences? XSIZIM: I have actually been producing music longer than I have been DJing. I started DJing a year ago, yet I have been producing for 3 years now. My early pas sion was the music itself. I wanted to perform my music live and share it with as many people as I could. FarándulaMag: What do you personally consider to be the inci sive moments in your artistic career? XSIZIM: I focus a lot on my creativity and sound. I like to keep my style in a lot of my original songs, but I also like to manipulate it by adding different elements from styles of music. FarándulaMag: What are currently your main challenges as a DJ? XSIZIM: So far my main challenge is getting people to recognize me. I would like to play a lot of shows so I can share my music with everyone but it’s kind of hard right now since mostly everyone is into the trap and dubstep scene. FarándulaMag: What makes you decide to play a par ticular record during one of your sets? I usually decide which mood I would like to start with and what mood I would like to end my set with. It also de pends on where I am playing. I also like to pick songs that would mix well with my original music. 65%-75% of my set contains my original music. FarándulaMag: How did you get the name Xsizim? XSIZIM: I got the name a long time ago before I even started producing. I had a good friend in high school freshman year who would call me DJ Xsizim because he knew I liked music and wanted to make music. I wasn’t a big fan of the “DJ” in the name so I decided to take it out. FarándulaMag: What do you use to produce your music these days? XSIZIM: I started producing with FL Studio 10. I taught myself how to use the program just by playing with it. Now I am using FL Studio 12. I love the UI update. I highly recommend starting producers to try the DAW software. FarándulaMag: Could you tell us about your new CD “Find Your Place”? XSIZIM: The new album is filled with energy and feeling. I wanted to show every one what Xsizim is about. Over the years, I have created my own sound and I absolutely love it. The album starts with a suspenseful, dark feeling which explodes with bright energy one the chords come in. It’s really something to listen to. My absolute favorite song from the album is the song “Remember”. I have gotten a lot of great feedback. You can listen to the album on iTunes, Spotify, Apple Music, on my SoundCloud page and much other music streaming websites.

¿

MP: Mainly we have just become better songwriters. In the early days simplistic was the name of the game. Eventually things got a little more fancy.....or maybe I just think they got fancy? FarándulaMag: What has been your biggest challenge as a band? Have you been able to overcome that challenge? If so, how? MP: Having to deal with 6 people’s schedules/personalities/life is pretty difficult. As long as you’re respectful of people it is pretty easy to overcome that. Even though it can be rather time consuming. FarándulaMag: Which songs do you perform most frequently? Do you ever play any covers? MP: The song that is most played is probably the “Beer Song” it is the song we end with at every show. We do covers! Lately we have been doing “Waiting Room” by Fugazi and “Roots Radical” by Rancid. FarándulaMag: Has anything crazy ever happened on tour? MP: One time in Buffalo, Dave the singer knocked out his front teeth on stage. I wasn’t there but that seems rather crazy. FarándulaMag: Biggest regret?

Not eating that sandwich in Pittsburgh. FarándulaMag: What is the hardest part about keeping a band going for so many years? MP: Again just dealing with 6 people’s lives. Having a core people that are dedicated to the band helps push that through though. FarándulaMag: What should your fans expect on your next show at Founders? Just a good time! Hopefully lots of

dancing. FarándulaMag: How can fans-tobe gain access to your music? Do you have a website with sample songs or a demo CD? MP: We have all the major social media platforms. Mustardplug.com is a good place to start. Also our facebook.com/mustardplug is a good place for information.

Mustard Plug ENTREVISTA CON

S

english

10 Killer Shoulder Exercises by: Annastashia & Jose Flores

I

t is May already and you know what that means…BBQ season and sleeveless shirts! This month we are going to focus on a well-rounded arm routine to sculpt your shoulders and keep your arms toned. For some women, this is a “problem” area. When you feel that you have one area lacking more than another, or you want to see the most change in an area, focus on it. My current routine involves legs 3 days a week and shoulders with arms two days a week. Feel free to complete this routine two times a week with 72 hours in between for sufficient rest and recovery time.
