Former Janis Joplin and Nicolas Cage Cars Appear in Gilmore Car Museum Special Exhibition

Los Autos que Perteneceieron a Janis Joplin y Nicolas Cage Serán Presentados en el Museo de Autos de Gilmore en una Exposición Especial eng

Hickory Corners, Mich. - “The Golden Age of Sports Cars, 1949-1967” is the title of an all-new special museum exhibition opening at the Gilmore Car Museum on Saturday October 1st and will run until April 2017. This exhibit showcases nearly two dozen of rarest and most sought after sports cars in the world including: Janis Joplin’s 1964 Porsche 356, Nicolas Cage’s 1967 Ferrari 275/GTB 4, the race inspired 1955 Mercedes Benz Gull Wing, and an authentic Shelby Cobra 427. “This amazing exhibition has been assembled by guest curators Tom Kayser and John Lacko,” stated Museum Director Michael Spezia. It highlights the ‘Golden Years’ of sports cars with several exceptional vehicles.” Just after WWII many returning American servicemen brought back a variety of sports cars they had discovered in Europe. These small cars were ill suited for a family and were often uncomfortable, but they offered an exciting experience to drive. American car manufacturers quickly recognized the enthusiasm and potential market and by the early 1950s they had introduced American cars to compete. The Chevrolet Corvette debuted in 1953, the Kaiser Darrin arrived in 1954, and the Ford Thunderbird was introduced in 1955. For a very short period, guests will be able to see rock legend Janis Joplin’s psychedelic Porsche that set a world record price paid for a Porsche 356 when it was sold in 2015 by Sotheby’s Auction. The car is slated for only the first 10 days of the exhibit. Joplin purchased the Porsche used in 1968 and had it painted bumper to bumper in a mural which includes psychedelic skull-like faces, mushrooms, and floating eyes as well as landscapes, butterflies, and birds. The car became Joplin’s daily driver in the San Francisco Bay area and its said that fans would often leave notes for her under the windshield wipers. The bright yellow 1967 Ferrari 275/GTB 4 was bought new right out of a dealer’s showroom with the same horsepower as Ferrari race engines and once belonged to Hollywood actor Nicolas Cage.

esp Hickory Corners, Mich.

Meet Soprano

Catalina Cuervo Maria de Buenos Aires

S

oprano, Catalina Cuervo, one out of five of the most prominent Colombian Opera Singers, has made her way to Grand Rapids to partake in the Opera, Maria de Buenos Aires. Maria de Buenos Aires is an emotion-packed Opera where love meets violence, fun meets passion, and sadness encounters reality. The Opera is written based on a story line involving the life of a prostitute in Buenos Aires, and the aftermath of her death. Maria de Buenos Aires, the main character, is a povertystricken girl who was born and raised in a small town. In search of something more than small-town life, she travels to Buenos Aires in hopes that she would find success. When she reaches her destination, she ends up participating in the lively nightlife that Buenos Aires has to offer. She falls victim to the love of the Tango, and pursues this spectacular dance incorporating a new flair to it. Maria is seen to be one of the most beautiful and seductive women in Buenos Aires who can easily hypnotize men with her appearance and style of dancing. As the story line progresses from the opening seen, one will be taken through a journey where they come face to face with Maria, Maria’s shadow, singers of Payadas, a goblin-like narrator, marionettes who follow every command, a wild group of psychoanalysts, and many members of the underworld of Buenos Aires. Cuervo has been playing Maria de Buenos Aires for the past five years. Her first

appearance taking place back in 2011 at the Chicago’s Hispanic International Music Festival. Cuervo, however, has more in store for the arts than her role in Maria de Buenos Aires. Catalina Cuervo was born in 1981 in Medellin, Colombia to her parents Blanca Samur and Mauricio Cuervo. She immediately started off her musical career by taking on piano and playing it until the age of twelve. Cuervo then turned to Rock music and once she discovered that her leisure listening had turned into a love for the music she began to study guitar and attended a music academy, Only Rock, in the neighborhood of El Poblado. One day, her father took her to the Metropolitan Theater to watch the presentation of Martha Senn; that one small trip between her father and her sparked a passion that furiously came alive. She knew from that day on she would live for the arts. Cuervo knew that she wanted to become an opera singer, dance, and actress. With further support from her parents, she decided to travel to America to study music and sound engineering. At the age of 18, she attended Miami Dade College where she took on numerous roles in Operas and eventually graduated in Sound Engineering Technique. Deciding to continue her educational career in music, she attended Roosevelt University of Chicago where she earned her Master’s in Music and Opera. Cuervo now mixes her educational knowledge and fiery passion in order to work as an opera singer, model, and fitness enthusiast and a profesional Arabic Dancer.

6 Core Moves for Stronger Abs 6 Ejercicios para Fortalecer tu Abdomen

Before beginning any new exercise regimen, especially if you are not used to regular exercise, it is important to consult with your primary care physician.

esp

By: Annastashia & Jose Flores

For size perform 6-8 sets of 6-8 reps

eng To tone perform 4 sets of 10-12 reps

1 2 3 4 5 6 7

Waist Whittler: At a cable, attach a long straight bar to the cable at shoulder height. Stand with your legs shoulder width apart and with the outside of one foot facing the cable. Make sure you are at least one large step away from the cable to increase your time under tension. Hold the straight bar with hands shoulder width apart, elbows slightly bent but fixed in place. Twist until your hand that is closest to the cable is now over top of the foot farthest from the cable. Make this move slow, controlled and keep your abs engaged through the entire movement. Switch to the other side. Plate Raises: Lay on your back with your knees bent or legs flat on the ground. The second option is more advanced. Hold a plate over your face with your elbows locked. As you sit up, press the weight upwards as if you were trying to make the plate go straight up from its starting point, not up and forward. Make sure you contract your abs and expel all of your air each time. Hanging Knee Raises: You can do this move hanging or in a captain’s chair with your forearms resting on the arm rests. Performing this move hanging is the more advanced options. Raiseyour knees as close to your chest as possible and hold for 1 second. Release legs straight back down. Concentrate on not swinging your legs. Plank on Stability Ball: You can perform this with your forearms on the ground, the stability ball adds increased difficulty. Placing your forearms on the ball, hold yourself in push up position. Make sure your hips stay in line with your body (not too high, not too low) and that your elbows are directly below your shoulders. Hold this position for as long as you can. You will perform 4 sets of what you can do. 30 seconds (beginner), 45 seconds (intermediate), 60 seconds (advanced).

1 2

Side Plank Dips: Laying on your side, raise your body up with your forearm supporting you directly under your shoulder. Your spine should be in a straight line, with your body being in a slanted position towards the ground. As you hold this position, dip your hip closest to the ground as far low as you can go, then raise it back up. Repeat on each side, 4 sets of 15. Cardio: For ab strength and definition, it is very important that you incorporate cardio. You can do this on your “off” days from training abs. Aim for a minimum of 30 minutes to 45 minutes. The BEST cardio for fat loss and ensuring a good ab workout is interval training. This is when you move at a slower pace for a length of time, then a faster pace for a short length of time, then return to the slower pace. Example: 1 minute of jogging, 30 seconds of running; 1 minute of easy paced running, 30 seconds of sprinting.

If frozen, rinse ice glaze from cod under cold water; pat dry with paper towel. Heat heavy, nonstick skillet over medium-high heat. Brush both sides of fillets with olive oil. To serve, spoon pea puree onto 4 plates. Top each with cod fillet and serve immediately. Serves 4

hether you’re a competitive sprinter chasing a new record or an everyday gym hound looking to get the most from your workout, seafood is among the best foods to support an athletic lifestyle. It not only delivers great-tasting nutrition, but also provides one-of-a-kind health benefits. The combination of lean protein, anti-inflammatory omega-3s and musclebuilding nutrients found in Alaska seafood are why it’s a staple for athletes like Ryan and Sara Hall.

“We like to incorporate Alaska seafood in our daily diet because it’s a really high-quality protein that helps to repair our muscles on a daily basis,” said Ryan Hall, a two-time Olympian and holder of the U.S. half-marathon record. After a run, Sara Hall – a 3,000-meter steeplechase and marathon runner, U.S. national champion and World Team member – relies on seafood as a goto for low-fat meals with protein and simpleto-digest carbs.
