ashion takes center stage at the Grand Rapids Art Museum (GRAM) as more than 50 sculptural masterpieces by Dutch designer Iris van Herpen make their Midwest debut this fall. Since interning for legendary fashion designer Alexander McQueen, van Herpen’s designs have been featured on the runways of Paris, Amsterdam and London and in the galleries of museums from Paris to New York. Iris van Herpen: Transforming Fashion, on view at GRAM, Grand Rapids, Michigan, October 23, 2016 to January 15, 2017, will fill the entire third floor of the Museum. The exhibition features 45 haute couture outfits carefully selected from 15 of van Herpen’s collections designed from 2008 through 2015: 18 pieces from the designer’s most recent lines, a selection of her shoe designs and 27 works from van Herpen’s solo exhibition at the Groninger Museum, Netherlands. In addition to van Herpen’s designs, a handson “touch material” section of the exhibition will encourage visitors to explore some of the more unusual materials she uses including translucent stainless steel fabric and structures made from the tines of children’s umbrellas. “Iris continues to redefine fashion and its place in the art world,” said GRAM Director & CEO Dana Friis-Hansen. “Like most artists, she continually experiments and tests new ideas to realize her artistic vision, be that capturing the movement of water or the visualization of sound waves. That creative spirit is central to all we do at GRAM and we’re excited to share such a breathtaking exhibition.” “Iris’ designs have been described as having a ‘sublime beauty,’” said GRAM Chief Curator Ron Platt. “She accomplishes that by melding design, technology, fashion and science in a manner that seems almost effortless but remains deeply rooted in traditional craftsmanship.” Van Herpen (Dutch, born 1984) produced her first collection in 2007, shortly after graduating from the ArtEZ Institute of the Arts in the Netherlands. Born in the small town of Wamel, she is now based primarily in Amsterdam. In 2012 she became a member of the exclusive Chambre Syndicale de Haute Couture, where her designs regularly appear in biannual Paris runway shows. Van Herpen divides her time between the contained world of her studio, her global network of collaborators and the international stage of fashion.

Proverbs 16:7 When a man’s ways please the LORD, he maketh even his enemies to be at peace with him.

A young reporter approached an old man on his 100th birthday. “Happy birthday, kind Sir! Can I bother you to answer one question? In all your years, of what are you most proud?” he asked.

“Well,” said the man, “I don’t have a single enemy in the world.”

“Really?!” shouted the reporter, “That’s just incredible -- how inspiring to us all!”

“Yep,” added the centenarian, “outlived every darn one of ‘em.”

Sadly, each of us has acquired an enemy or two in our lives. While it’s our human nature to find fault in others and make an occasional unnecessary enemy, sometimes it has nothing to do with us! I mean, you wouldn’t believe the kind of hate mail we get from people we’ve never met! What can we do to make peace with enemies like those?

The word “deh-rech” in Hebrew, is ‘way’ in the verse above. Derech can also mean journey or path. When our path is straight, and God is the focus of our journey, then our ways will please Him and He will make even our enemies be at peace with us.

Inspiring the Community With her Pieces

S

ummer E.A. a Lithuanian artist and art teacher, is passionate about using her pieces to strike a chord with members of her community. She wants to inspire others to face challenges and overcome obstacles. She teaches at the Grandville, Mich., art school and Studio Art by Era, which she opened in 2014. In this interview, she tells her story so children and adults will hone their art skills. FarandulaMag: How do you find your inspiration? SB: I am a creative person. I have visions and ideas about everything in life. The creative process through painting helps me to materialize it on canvas. When I meet people and travel, I start thinking and connecting what I see to my visions. Right away, I have ideas for my paintings and the messages that I want to say to people. FarandulaMag: What is your creative process? SB: It’s very natural. I enter my studio and create every day. For serious projects and paintings, I have ideas, visions and sketches. For some works, I spontaneously come to the studio with waves of colors swirling in my head. I use my energies and expressions until I get a vision for a new painting that I never expected. I surprise myself because usually I really like it! Artists don't always plan their work. Often, my heart and hand has to guide me on what to do. Art is connected to feelings and to my soul. Painting is not mechanical; it's spiritual to me. FarandulaMag: When did you begin painting? SB: The best thing I remember from my childhood was being recognized for my talent in drawing. Wherever we went, people knew I was talented and asked me to draw when an art piece was needed. As I grew, I had a beautiful and talented art teacher who inspired me to want to teach art to others. When I went to a university in Europe to study art education, I knew I was following my dreams and that’s where I wanted to be. I learned a lot during my seven years of education. I am very blessed that I can teach art to people. FarandulaMag: How has your style changed over time? SB: My style has matured as I have grown older. I see deference in my art throughout the years, but it still has similar specific personal aspects to my own style in colors and brush strokes. When I go back to my early paintings of my university days, I see similarities to what I do today. The works I painted before I moved to the United States were more realistic.

The ones I paint now in the United States are deeper. I lived here for six years. Every year, I am going deeper into abstract and I love it. The changes are close to my personality It was not easy in the beginning, but it helps to express myself better. I see how much I love that style. These paintings show more of whom I am and how I see the world. FarandulaMag: What do you believe is a key element in creating a good composition or painting? SB: Getting deeply in touch with personal feelings is the key element for painting. I am not a writer or singer; I can not express my feelings by words. That’s why I paint. I can express my feelings through colors and shapes. That’s my language. My brush is my tool. I use it to speak on canvas. Sometimes, artists find it hard to be free and relaxed. I learned to be free, and I teach that. I tell my students not to worry about copying others. They need to express their feelings and be themselves. Then, the right piece will show itself.

We finished the second year in May. I showcased a beautiful students’ exhibition in my studio. Families and friends attended. It was a nice event to show what we did, what kind of projects and paintings the kids did! Now, students are excited to start a new school year on Sept. 1. We are going to start our third year with new paintings and projects. I hope they become very nice, talented artists one day. Art education is not only for whom wants to be an artist, but also it’s good for everyone to know the basics of drawing. For example, if you want to be a good baker you need to know how to decorate beautiful cakes and things. If you want to be a graphic designer, fashion designer or architect, you need some skills. I think that, in any profession, you can use the creativity you learn from art classes to excel in your profession.

FarandulaMag: Can you tell me about your participation in the Art Prize? SB: This year, I did a different painting. I created three paintings that are more serious than those in my past. It will be my fourth showing of my art. I am FarandulaMag: Can you tell us more blessed to be there and represent my newest about your Studio Art by Era? artwork. Every year, I am trying to do different SB: I used to teach in Grand Rapids, Mich., things with my art. I want to see people’s reactions. European School. I taught art, language, culture, It’s important for me. This year, I would like to show history of European countries. My student parents life and my reactions at a particular moment. I want art classes at churches and in homes. As I received people to stop wasting our planet and to love and more and more compliments and comments on respect it. My art is about where I see this world my teaching, I started to consider having a school. going if we do not become better stewards of the I was very excited that the community thought it land and better humans for each other regardneeded a way for people to learn about art and to less of culture or borders. We have to love our see things the way I do. I found a beautiful place continents, nature and the whole planet. I believe in Grandville to have my art school. It’s a beautiful the universe is watching us. This is the message studio to teach art and for me as an artist. It’s a of my art pieces that I want to show in the 2016 great location, near all major highways. Students ArtPrize exhibit. come from all over the area to my studio. I would like to have another studio in downtown Grand Rapids. If I choose an expensive Grand Rapids building for my classes, I would have to set a high fee for the classes. I don’t look at my classes as a business. I want to give what I have to others. That’s what I need to do. I need to teach because I had a dream. I like that I can charge a very small fee for people to take my classes. Every family, regardless of lifestyle, can afford it. The price is $39 a month for weekly classes. Many students are coming to my studio after school every year. I teach basic art, drawing and painting, still life, composition, abstract, graphics and art therapy to children and adults. A lot of kids don’t have art classes in public schools. In the beginning, it was hard to get students because I couldn’t afford advertising. I went to people and talked to them. My reputation spread as people started talking to each other about me.

FarandulaMag: ¿Cuándo empesaste a pintar?

rt is a great way to communicate and Erick Picardo has been communicating a lot of his thoughts and views through his paintings. Erick Picardo is one of the successful artists in Grand Rapids. Although originally from Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic, he has made Grand Rapids his home since 2001. In his early adolescent years, he moved to Catano, Puerto Rico with his father and family and attended the university in the Dominican Republic for Art and Design. However, he later decided to move to the United States for a better opportunity and settled in West Michigan. He became a full-time artist and decided to contribute to the society through art.

icardo has participated in various local art events including UICA’s Live Coverage, the Creston Neighborhood Association’s Art Battle for Community, and Avenue for the Arts, Folkloric and Traditional AfroCaribbean Dance and many others. He has been a leader in the arts community representing West Michigan’s Caribbean community on a national and global map. Art has been an integral part of Picardo’s life and he decided to choose it as a career to bring about social changes in the Caribbean community. He has also been working actively to create a space in West Michigan for upcoming artistic talent and recognizing them for better future of art. FarandulaMag: What’s been your greatest artistic success? Picardo: I found ways to overcome all of these challenges to pursue my passion for arts while doing it, but I’m very aware that the challenges you face are daunting and very real. I truly believe that it is one of the current art murals that I am working on at Metro Hospital Byron Center. FarandulaMag: What is your creative process like? Picardo: Every art project begins with an idea, then I pick the subject based in these ideas. It is usually something that gets my creative juices flowing. Often I use to work on some sketches where I see the composition. The main idea is trying to create something outstanding, so I like to see colors and shapes to make sure the scheme works. After that, I have a really strong idea about how it is going to look. One important element in my work has to be colors. The right color makes the difference; for example, the entire painting can fall apart because I didn’t take the time to develop good structure. FarandulaMag: What is the most challenging part about working with painting? Picardo: The challenges that an artist face are many. It often takes years of education and practice to gain a good skill. Producing a piece of art is an experiment that requires research, insight, review and to repeat the process. The next step is believing that YOU are the one that can make it better.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Erick Picardo

I believe it is a combination of many things. For example: making a living doing what you love; create a piece of art. Then getting them shown or finding people interested in buying your art. The next big challenge is gaining publicity, to attract attention from potential buyers and art collectors. The journey wasn’t easy. I’ve been fortunate enough, as the son of an artist and the owner of a gallery, to see artists who have found ways to overcome all of these challenges to pursue their passion and make a successful living while doing it, but I’m very aware that the challenges you face are daunting and very real. FarandulaMag: Do you do anything in particular to sell your art? Picardo: I am always busy working or creating a project based on music or art. Selling limited edition prints or any form of physical art can be profitable if you have an engaged and supportive community. following your art. Actually, I got to mention that our local community does not support local arts. Building that community is the actual challenge. One important element is to build a website, online portfolio and also monthly mailing list.

FarandulaMag: Can you tell us about yourself and how you became an artist? I was born in Santo Domingo, the Dominican Republic; moved to Catano, Puerto Rico when I was sixteen with my father family for a few years. I attended school for about seven years in a university in the Dominican Republic for Art and Design. In 2001 I decided to leave my land country and come to the United States looking for a better opportunity and running away from a corrupted country. For sixteen years living in West Michigan now. I am doing what I love to do; I became a full-time artist and fulfill part of my dream of focusing a lot of percent of my time on creating art or cultural event for the community. The journey still and I’ve been here ever since. I have done a lot of great thing in here including the first Latin American Art Festival for three years and the First Caribbean Art Festival for three years also among of a lot of cultural and event like GR Latin Music Awards. I have been function as a mentor for a few emerging Latinos and non Latino artists, thing that produced a lot of personal satisfaction.

Frida Kahlo, by Guillermo Kahlo, 1932 United States public domain

Frida: I got Diego on My Mind By Erick Picardo

The relationship between Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera was tempestuous. They met when she was 20 years, and he was senior, and already a giant in the world of Mexican art, known for his epic murals. Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera, caused a lifetime of mental and physical anguish. But they also shaped Kahlo’s art, providing her paintings with an obsessive ferocity that have cemented her place as a Mexican icon. Both of them embrace “La Mexicanidad”, a re-appreciation of Mexico and its traditions and cultures that a whole generation of artists, musicians and writers embraced in the early twentieth century in Mexico.” Also, both artists had affairs. According to a few biographers, Kahlo created arts to betray that she was deeply hurt by Rivera’s casual relationship with different women. Kahlo also had numerous affairs with both men and women. Another theme in her work is lifelong physical pain she endured, including suffering from polio as a child and a serious injury in a bus accident as a young woman which required dozens of surgeries over the rest of her life. Frida Kahlo was 18 years old when the bus she was traveling on crashed in Mexico City. The teenager was impaled, breaking her spinal column, pelvis, collarbone and ribs. The force of the collision ripped off her clothes, leaving her bleeding and naked. And, in a twist somehow prescient of Kahlo’s colorful, tragic life, a packet of powdered gold carried by another passenger exploded, showering her broken body in flakes of the precious metal. Defensively; throughout all of this process in her life she carried Diego on her mind

For size perform 6-8 sets of 6-8 reps To tone perform 4 sets of 10-12 reps Front Squat: Feet shoulder width apart, set the bar on the front of your shoulders so it runs across your neck. This move does involve flexibility in your wrists. When you squat, dip as low as you can into this move. When you stand up, drive your elbows up towards the ceiling to help insure proper form. Split Squats: Using either a bar or dumbbells, set a bench behind you. Lift one leg back and rest the top of your foot on that bench. You should be in a lunge position. When you squat down, it is important to rest your weight backwards on the heel that is on the ground, and make sure that your knee does not surpass your toes. Donkey Calf raises: Set up a squat rack with the bar lower than normal. Make sure to use a neck pad or a folded yoga mat to protect your lower back. Use a bench or stability ball to rest your hands on. Using a step will help ensure a full stretch in your calf while doing these raises. This may take a moment to set up and get comfortable with. While balancing the weight on your lower back over your hips, stretch and extend your calves. Leg Press: You should be able to use a descent amount of weight on this. Put your feet in the high outer corners to resemble a squat stance. Allow the weight to push all the way down on you to ensure a full stretch through your hamstring. Then press the weight back upwards. Calf Presses: On the leg press machine, put your toes on the bottom on the platform. They can be centered or neutral. With your legs extended with a slight bend in the knee (to protect your joints) let the weight press back on your toes to fully stretch your calves out. O

pera Grand Rapids is delighted to present genre-bending tango opera,María de Buenos Aires to audiences this October.

Seductive, haunting and intoxicating, the 80-minute opera is a surreal spiritual journey set to the beat of Argentine tango. Pulse and poetry play an equal role in which the melody is transformed into a series of mesmerizing moments that are rich in metaphor. The most performed Spanish language opera in the world, María de Buenos Aires is regarded by many as an unconventional masterpiece that has acquired cult-like status. With poetry by Horacio Ferrer and music from composer and pioneer of nuevo tango, Ástor Piazzolla, audiences watch the heroine embody tango and the city itself in dreamlike fashion. The story centers around María who is rumored to be born in the slums of Buenos Aires on a day when God was drunk. As a young woman, she is seduced by tango and a city moving to the pulse of an intoxicating rhythm. She comes to embody the sensual dance at the loss of her mortality and is

condemned to haunt the streets of Buenos Aires forever. Opera Grand Rapids’ production features Colombianborn Catalina Cuervo, known as “the fiery soprano,” in the star role. Holding the distinction of having performed the most productions of the opera, Ms. Cuervo has performed the role for numerous prestigious companies including Florida Grand Opera, Cincinnati Opera, and Syracuse Opera to name a few. Argentinian born conductor Jorge Parodi and Mexican born director Octavio Cardenas will lead a group of tango dancers and the small ensemble, including famous “master of the bandoneon” Daniel Binelli, one of only a handful of bandoneon players in the world. Opera Grand Rapids’ production will be presented in a newly renovated Betty Van Andel Opera Center, located on East Fulton Street, set to resemble a milonga, or a place where tango is danced. Valet parking will be available to patrons for the performances. Tickets for Opera Grand Rapids’ 2016-17 season are available through the Opera Grand Rapids Box Office, (616) 451-2741 or 1320 East Fulton Street.
