PANEL DISCUSSIONS: NAVIGATING THROUGH UNCERTAINTY Cynthia J. Arnson, Director of the Latin American Program at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars led the opening panel, which featured leading economists from multilateral institutions, as well as private sector representation. Under the context of an increasingly hostile economic environment, where China’s consumption patterns have slowed down, commodity prices have fallen, and the U.S. dollar is appreciating, panelists discussed the region’s economic forecast in the short, medium and long term.
“You don’t create innovation by yourself.” José Antonio Ríos,
Chairman and CEO of Celistics
REGIONAL AND GLOBAL STRATEGIES FOR SUSTAINED GROWTH The Boston Consulting Group’s Jorge Becerra transitioned from Latin America’s macroeconomic focus to that of the region’s companies, which are experiencing both opportunities and challenges in the local and global economy. Over the course of the last 20 years, the prevalence of Latin American multinational corporations have grown, with aspirations of moving beyond borders, to compete on a global stage. Panelists discussed how Latin America’s multinationals have become internationalized, and how they will continue to grow, expand, and find new markets.
SUCCESS THROUGH INNOVATION Panelists formed a consensus that innovation in Latin American business needs to take into account adaptability, as well as the role of human capital within the organization. According to Thilo Mannhardt, CEO of Ultrapar, corporations must understand and be able to adapt to the receiving end of any innovation initiative, be it to markets, consumers or investors. For many years innovation was looked at by way of marketing, but as Mannhardt continued, the pull by consumers is extremely important in gaging, and adapting to growing customer needs. ‘’You don’t create innovation by yourself,’’ said José Antonio Ríos, Chairman and CEO of Celistics. Now more than ever, there is a synergistic relationship with consumers and corporations, where one can influence and adapt to the concerns and interests of the other.
NEW OPPORTUNITIES: PARAGUAY, THE POLICY INNOVATORS In a special keynote conversation, Sudameris Bank’s Chairman Conor McEnroy sat down with the Honorable Gustavo Leite, Minister of Industry and Commerce, Republic of Paraguay, to discuss the country’s recent push to incentivize foreign trade and investment, and the role the government is playing to attract international business and facilitate commerce. Given shared borders with South American giant Brazil, as well as Argentina, understanding its neighbors and benefiting from such proximity has proved beneficial for Paraguay. Yet location alone has not been enough to attract substantial private investment, and according to Leite, ‘’we had to create our own competitiveness.’’
CONCURRENT SESSIONS I,II,III The three concurrent sessions took place, focused on topics such as corporate social responsibility and the role of foundations, gender and ethnic diversity in the workplace, and energy in the Americas. Participants were able form working groups, and analyze these issues in greater detail over.
“At the beginning it was about positioning Mexico and the region as important players in the industry.” Blanca Trevino,
MEXICO’S ENERGY REVOLUTION A Private Conversation with Pedro Joaquín Coldwell, Secretary of Energy, Mexico Mexico has taken historic steps over the last two years towards a path of energy independence. Recent energy reforms passed in August of 2014 have created an environment for private investment in upstream oil and gas exploration, as well as the electricity market. While the global energy sector focuses on the tremendous potential and opportunities as a result, the country is actively promoting technological innovation and the development of skilled industry labor to provide sustainable economic growth. Mexico’s Secretary Pedro Joaquín Coldwell will discuss his role leading the country’s energy sector, as well as the opportunities and challenges moving forward.
LATIN AMERICA PHILANTHROPY INICIATIVE EVALUATING EFFECTIVENESS AND IMPACT One of the most challenging issues facing foundations, not only in LAC, but globally, is evaluating the effectiveness of specific initiatives focused on access to quality education, healthcare and poverty alleviation. Ensuring widespread benefits from high impact social programs can be a daunting task, and foundations with finite resources must take that into account when implementing their initiatives. Creating detailed strategies and indicators is one way in which organizations can measure the effectiveness and impact on society. Experts on education and public health will discuss the best practices for implementing social programs in the Americas, and bring to the table the experience of new highly efficient IT-based startups that work in these areas.
President and CEO, Sofftek
CLOSING THE GAP: SOCIAL INCLUSION AND THE VALUE OF TALENT Women in Latin America and the Caribbean have made great strides in recent years, but much more needs to be done to close the equality gap in the workforce. Politically, over the course of the last decade the region has elected a number of female leaders, such as President Dilma Rousseff in Brazil, President Michelle Bachelet in Chile and President Laura Chinchilla in Costa Rica. While impressive, the private sector has lagged behind this trend of incorporating diversity at the highest levels. Women are still significantly underrepresented in top management throughout the region. Panelists will discuss policies that major multilatinas and multinationals are introducing to close the gender gap and give ample opportunity for advancement.

Latin Trade’s inaugural Agents of Change: The New Face of Innovation and Talent forum, brought together young entrepreneurs and executives, as well as seasoned CEOs from the region to discuss leadership skills, disrupting traditional business models, and the next generation of leaders who will inherent Latin America. Bernardo Guillamón, Manager of the Office of Outreach and Partnerships at the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) started the day’s discussion with a conversation featuring Luis Montoya, President of Latin America Beverages at PepsiCo, and Woods Staton, Executive Chairman of Arcos Dorados. The senior executives discussed what they see as imperative traits which the next generation of leaders will need, both in business and society to deal with new challenges. During the program, Latin Trade honored Tallis Gomes, Founder of Easy Taxi, with the first ever Young Leader of the Year Award. During his acceptance, Gomes articulated the importance of innovation within his company, and how disrupting the status quo is the new normal of today’s generation. The idea for Easy Taxi spawned out of Gomes’ personal experience and the difficulties associated with calling and hailing taxis in large scale cities. With Easy Taxi, Gomes created a mobile application that lets the user ‘’e-hail’’ a taxi, and view its location in real time. Started in 2011, the company now boasts a presence in 35 countries, 420 cites, with more than 1300 employees. In addition to discussions on leadership and social responsibility, panelists discussed innovation as a disrupting force in traditional business models, as well as the role of the government in supporting startups and young entrepreneurs.
