Ms. Rodriguez received her first on-air television reporting experience on BronxNet’s original news program “BXNY News” in the early 1990’s. While working as a production intern, Ms. Russell also carried out reporting assignments for BronxNet’s news program in 1997. The opportunities both women had to hone their craft at BronxNet are reflective of BronxNet’s commitment to provide media training and development opportunities for students, the public and individuals who have dreams of media success behind or in front of the camera. Through internships, workshops and entry-level positions working on real programs, individuals are able to get thorough hands-on experience on programs that are cablecast to Bronx audiences. During her time at BronxNet, Ms. Rodriguez became well known to viewers, organizations and leaders around the borough as she focused heavily on community development and political stories although she also covered the fun, entertainment story at a moment’s notice. Ms. Russell came to BronxNet to get some solid, hands-on experience prior to heading off to graduate school to master the fine points of journalism. “BronxNet has trained thousands of Bronxites and students and helped many build careers. We’re very proud of Darlene Rodriguez and Shiba Russell and happy that BronxNet was able to help them build their outstanding careers,” says BronxNet Executive Director Michael Max Knobbe. BronxNet programs four channels - 67, 68, 69 and 70 - on the Cablevision system and six channels - 33, 34, 35, 36, 37 and 38 on the Verizon FiOS system in the Bronx. In order to progress, we have to keep moving. In that spirit, we here at LatinTRENDS have put together a one-of-a-kind event: the 5th Annual iConomy Expo. Known as the premier event in NYC to educate, inform, & inspire the forward thinking, it is a platform in which career-minded, business owners, entrepreneurs and college students can collectively network & keep moving. Consider it like a playground: the ball is “preparation,” & the stadium “opportunity.” iConomy Expo features moderated panel discussions and seminars on such topics as: money & finance, entrepreneurship, social media, technology, secondary business opportunities, effective networking, career options, career development, the Hispanic market, media and community. Registration is required to attend specific panels. See panels/speakers and register at www.iconomyny.com Of course, in this spirit, we also bring you a series of articles in this month’s issue about various aspects of business, finance, and more. For example, our senior writer Ray Monell’s piece on Juan Pablo Capello’s Idea.me speaks about a platform that helps talented Hispanic creators to accomplish their ideas through crowd-funding. Crowd-funding is quickly becoming the wave of the future when it comes to financing creative projects, & Capello’s story is on page 40. Next, check out our unique fashion spread featuring KD Dance. KD Dance is a fun, funky, comfortable line that has been worn by Kanye West & Jennifer Lopez. We gave it a “Latin Twist” featuring three gorgeous, up-and-coming Latina models: Italian/Portuguese/Dominican model/actress Sally Ferreira, Dominican model/vixen Jameela, & Puerto Rican newcomer Jenn Bel. Our shoot begins on page 10. On a different note, our cover feature on CSI: Miami star Adam Rodriguez is sure to inspire you in a very different way. This New York-born & bred actor, whose new film “Magic Mike” has him co-starring alongside Channing Tatum, talks extensively about the actual business of movie-making, whether auteurs actually exist in the process, and all the different aspects of the entertainment business he has learned along the way. Our exclusive interview with him begins on page 28.

After I heard the fun, flirty, young voice at the other end of the phone, I knew instantly this would be fun & interesting conversation. It’s moments like this when you meet a person -- even over the phone -- that you feel a connection. It’s more than the obvious, & more than the fact that we are both women and Latin. Snow has a drive, a passion, that you feel the second you speak to her. And do not underestimate this 23 year old with Mexican roots currently residing in Dallas, Texas! Our conversation started with how surprisingly cold it was outside that afternoon -- she had just step outside from recording. Listening as she discovered her loving, yet very playful pit bull had destroyed her backyard. After hearing her settle we began. I want to start with your parents, what part of Mexico are they from? “Zacatecas, located in the North Central part of Mexico.” Snow was born in California, before moving to Texas about four years ago. Why the move from California to Texas? “Being on the West coast was a little out the way for all the traveling that I do. It just made sense to be in the middle.” “Especially with my Manager’s office located in Houston, Texas. Where I handle most of my business transactions, meetings, calls, etc.” So let’s talk about ‘Unorthodox’ your recent project. Why that name? “The reason I choose ‘Unorthodox’ for the title is to be able to do what I want, put out any type of song, no limitations. I am a versatile artist, just want my fans to always keep that in mind.” I adore your drive. How and where this this passion come from? How long have you be in the game? “I think I was born with this characteristic, I stick to what I love. I believe I am extremely passionate about my work and talents because I always promised myself and my family, that one day I would be someone. I have been writing, singing for about six years now, the first year was to test my waters, the last five I would say was when I went full force.” What have you learned so far? “I have learned a lot about the business and people in general. All business is the same, it’s a lot of hard work. Especially being a female, a Latina. I worked hard to start my own name, my brand, my product. Many don’t realize it’s harder to get work, respect & acknowledgment for us minority woman. I’ve matured, learned to stop caring so much about what people say or think. I’ve learned to separate my surroundings and just be myself. Once you are focused on life and on what really matters, it get’s much easier. What is your main goal? “My main goal is to make it clear to everyone who I am and what I have to offer.” What is next for Snow The Product? “I’m recording a mixtape, collaborating with a all different producers, I’m still deciding on the title.” Snow is all about setting a great example for all Latinas, raising the bar, and most importantly her main mission to make sure that not just herself, but all Latina’s are represented well. Wishing you the best with your current & future success. Can’t wait to hear what’s next!

KD started creating artisan knits in California in 1980 because there was nothing else like them available. The collection immediately became its own genre, and still is. In 1983, they opened their own factory in New York, the center of the U.S. fashion industry. Like the scarves and handbags made by Hermés Paris, KD designs can’t be achieved by mass production or outsourcing. The yarns they use are unique. They’re also challenging to work with. The pieces demand a level of craftsmanship and experience in knitting techniques and fabrications that can only be found in New York. LatinTRENDS has given this unique, quality line a Latin Twist with models from across the spectrum...all lovely ladies, all Latina, all woman. Run. Dance. Scream. Jump. Meditate. Stretch. Sleep. Swim. Strut. Lounge. Breathe. And always...FEEL BEAUTIFUL.

Tommy Thompson is a busy guy. As the 35 year old head of the Dallas-based advertising agency iNSPIRE!, the Nicaraguan-born Thompson is always thinking about connecting with an increasingly vocal and very young Latino consumer. I recently got a chance to speak with Thompson via cell phone as he made his way from Chicago to Phoenix to Dallas; Thompson was excited as ever about his connection with one of the most recognizable foodretailers in the world, McDonald’s for the second season of the web program Latinos Are One (LR1). Jesse Gomez: How did you ever come to be involved with this aspect of Latino culture; Latin teens? Tommy Thompson: “One of our target markets from the get-go has been this traditionally-underserved-bythe-Hispanic-marketing-industry market. They are bicultural, bi-lingual youth. We’ve been working for them for 9 years and from the very first time we spoke they told us, ‘I consume media in English; that doesn’t serve me; my parents watch television in Spanish but that doesn’t speak to me either.’” What was your approach to this demographic? “We wanted to engage them in the digital space. The cultural Hispanic is such a fusion of different sounds; this melding of cultures; so we wanted to speak to them in their own language.” So is that where the idea for LR1 came from? “Yes. For season one we went into the studio over 3 days. This concept was at first reality based; there was no script. We wanted GRAMMY-winning producer Andres Levin and three distinct voices to come together to make one song. We worked with hip-hop MC Velcro, Jean Shepherd from the rock band Navegante, and singer-songwriter Debi Nova. The result from season one of their combined talents was “Maña y Corazón” – a new single that really
showcased the creativity of independent Latin music.” Why music? “Music is king. We struggled with how to provide a new platform that will engage the segment continuously. If you listen to a Latino teen’s iPod they have very varied music choices. There might be Jay-Z, Kanye, music of their parents or grandparents; and just a different blend of music that they’re exposed to. From music was where the concept of fusion came to be born.” How was the song received? “The song is truly energetic number. It makes Hispanics very proud and definitely gets you going.” So what’s this second season about? “Well season 2 is the process of 10 individual artists and their reaction to this song. They are all different and come from all different places. There’s a visual designer, jewelry maker, makeup artist, choreographer, and painters all working in different mediums; all with the same inspiration.” What were some of the biggest surprises for you during this process? “The biggest surprise to me was what the artists would do. You go in thinking that they’re going to do one thing but then they go in totally different direction. Really just seeing how one song inspires them to something different. We show that creative process taking place.” What would you call some of the Hispanic community’s biggest challenges? “The Hispanic education problem is significant. We’ve worked with kids from the beginning. You go to a high
school and you hear the kids saying the same thing; ‘why do I need to finish high school?’ We try to show with LR1 that you can be artistic; but just because you’re artistic doesn’t mean you don’t need an education. The artists we work with are all well-rounded, hard-working folks.” How deep is your involvement with McDonald’s? “My involvement with McDonald’s goes back 13 years. We’re working with them in 42 markets across the country. McDonald’s was a leader in connecting with Hispanics all the way back to the 70’s. They were one of the companies which realized early the importance of this market and they came through with a devotion to Hispanics. McDonald’s is also a leader in giving opportunities to Hispanics.” You’re kind of young to be in charge of such a dynamic marketing agency. What kind of a message can you give to Latino youths out there who really see no prospects? “I got where I am through hard work & passion; do what you’re passionate about, follow your passions. A lot of times we’ve been trained to follow certain things; but in this day-and-age there are many non-traditional areas where people can go, find work, find their passion, and be successful. There’s a lot of hard work that goes along with that. It’s not 9-5.” What’s next for iNSPIRE!? “We just finished project working with young Latinas. There has been an interesting dynamic recession brought on; now more and more Latina women are the ones bringing home the bacon. There’s a program we’re about to launch about how to navigate the future…” Anything else? “World domination.”
