Trends, Influencers & Inspiration
Looking back, this award has come a long way since its inception, when I was the publisher of a magazine known as Dominican Times in 2001. The magazine then became DTM in 2005, before our final destination (rebranding) to LatinTRENDS in 2010. Our mission is simple, but there is power in simplicity: to produce cutting edge, lifestyle content that highlights impactful people and innovations that inform, entertain and inspire the forward thinking Latino in America; and to be the number one source for Latinos seeking “Pop Culture with a Latin Twist” in the U.S.
journalists Joe Torres & Tom Llamas, actor & activist April Hernandez, educator Henry Rubio, entrepreneurs Sergio Fernandez de Cordova & David Corona, Dr. Luz Adriana Matiz & many others. For full bios and interviews on all of our 2011 awardees, go to meet the trendsetters, beginning on page 18. For more information on this event, its history and photos & videos, visit: www.latinotrendsetter.com In closing, I will share some quotes, that hopefully will hit a nerve with some of you and cause you to get up off that seat of comfort, fear, or laziness, which you have been sitting on for the past who knows how long…you know what I mean, that inner voice, that whispers: should I start this business? I can’t call that person... they owe me an apology!.. I can’t find a job…I hate my job…I can’t get ahead… I’m too busy; life in New York is hectic... I’m always working; I have no time to do things... whatever your inner voice is saying: pump up the volume, if it will empower you and simply kill the noise if not. I hope you enjoy this issue and these quotes… as always our mission is to inform, entertain and inspire…hasta la vista!
All along, since our inception, we have acknowledged talent & success, along with the inspiration that the awardees bring us all -- especially to our youth, who in today’s world can benefit from seeing and knowing that there are people within their reach and visibility that have and are opening the doors of creativity, possibility and prosperity, not just financially, but of the mind, body and spirit as well. Most importantly, they are influencing trends and decisions in their respective industries. This is why they are trendsetters…in the game of life, let’s call them game influencers. Past Honorees include Latin music legend Willie Colon, philanthropist Laura Posada, Bronx borough President Ruben Diaz Jr., Pulitzer Prize winning author & professor Junot Diaz, and the late Bill Gallo, legendary Daily News journalist & cartoonist. Some of this year’s trendsetters include
“Don’t ask what the world needs. Ask what makes you come alive, and go do it. Because what the world needs are people who have come alive” -- Howard Thurman “Pain is inevitable, but misery is optional. We cannot avoid pain, but we can avoid joy” -- Tim Hansel

-------------------------------------Hector Elizondo Last Man’s Best Man Veteran actor has new roles in TV, film and behind the scenes
By Gerri Miller In the nearly five decades-he’s been in show business, Hector Elizondo has played well over 100 roles on TV, stage and screen, encompassing comedy and drama, cameos and leads, and historical and contemporary fare. Memorable for such television series as Monk, Cane and Chicago Hope, for which he won an Emmy, Elizondo is back on television this season in the ABC half-hour comedy Last Man Standing, playing friend and boss to Tim Allen’s beleaguered, outnumbered-bywomen lead character. “It was the right show, right time, right place, right person,” Elizondo explains his return to TV. Allen, he says, was the main reason. Although they’d only met briefly in the past, “I know how he works. It’s a small business and word gets around. He’s a man you want to work with. I don’t need to work anymore—it ain’t about the money,” he emphasizes. “For me, it’s all about the quality of life.” Working at one of his favorite studios, Radford, was another draw, as was the character of Ed, who he describes as passionate and eccentric.
8 NOVEMBER 2011
It’s probably not the only ABC show he’ll appear in this season. Having guest starred as Callie’s dad Carlos Torres on Grey’s Anatomy since the beginning, Elizondo says it’s quite possible that he’ll reprise that role this season “Working with Sara Ramirez is a delight,” he says enthusiastically. “I like her—her talent and her energy.” On the big screen, Elizondo will once again team up with his friend, director Garry Marshall, who sees him as a good luck charm and has cast him in every one of his movies, including Pretty Woman, Valentine’s Day, and the Princess Diaries movies. In New Year’s Eve, due out Dec. 9, he plays an electrician whose skills are needed to fix the famous illuminated ball that’s dropped in New York at midnight on Dec. 31. “I’m playing a Russian this time. I do a very fine Russian accent,” says the actor, who appears in the ensemble comedy with Robert DeNiro, Ashton Kutcher, Katherine Heigl, Sofia Vergara, Jessica Biel, Hilary Swank, Alyssa Milano and Lea Michele.
Elizondo is also busy behind the scenes, coproducing two movies that aren’t titled yet. “One is based on an Israeli movie and the other is a gambling story about a single mother and her son,” he reveals, adding that there will likely be parts for him in both.

A Very Harold & Kumar Christmas Genre: Comedy Starring: Danny Trejo, John Cho In Theatres November 4th A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas is an upcoming 3D stoner comedy film directed by Todd Strauss-Schulson and written by Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg. The main plot follows Harold (Cho) and Kumar (Penn), two estranged friends who embark on an adventure to find a new Christmas tree after Kumar destroys the original. in-law’s beloved Christmas tree. To fix the problem, Harold and Kumar embark on a mission through New York City to find the perfect Christmas tree, once again stumbling into trouble at every single turn. Harold (John Cho) and Kumar (Kal Penn) are now in their 30s and no longer on speaking terms. Harold is a married, drug-free, Wall Street executive who lives in a beautiful home. Kumar is single, still lives in the same place, and has recently had his medical license suspended for smoking marijuana. The pair are reunited when a package intended for Harold arrives at their old apartment and Kumar delivers it to his house. While there, in a pot-related mishap, Kumar burns down a Christmas tree grown by Harold’s father-in-law, requiring the two to go out in search of a replacement. What follows is lots of penis and weed jokes.
In between, there is are waffle-making robots (Wafflebot - this year’s hot new toy), a drugtaking infant, and Neil Patrick Harris, who hosts a TV Christmas special with Kelly Ripa. The script also explains why New Line Cinema has been considering shooting the film in 3D. Apparently, there is a five-page claymation sequence in which Harold and Kumar, high on psychoactive eggnog, are chased through midtown Manhattan by a giant snowman.

Mexico, Nation in Transit examines how the Mexican migrant population in the United States is represented in the Mexican national im-aginary— on both sides of the border. Exploring representations of migration in literature, film, and music produced in the past twenty years, Christina Sisk argues that Mexico is imagined as a nation that exists outside of its territorial borders and into the United States. Although some Americans feel threatened by the determined resilience of Mexican national identity among immigrants, Sisk counters that the persis-tence of immigrant Mexicans’ identities with their homeland—with the cities, states, regions, and nation where they were born or have family—is not in opposition to their identity as Americans. Sisk’s transnational investigation moves easily across the US–Mexico border, analyzing films made on both sides, literature de la frontera, Mexican rock music, migrant narratives, and texts written by second- and third-generation immigrants. Included are the perspectives of those who left Mexico, those who were left behind, and the children who travel back “home.”
Decolonizing Epistemologies builds upon the contributions of liberation and postcolonial theories in both philosophy and theology. Gathering the work of three generations of Latina/o theologians and philosophers who have taken up the task of transforming their respective disciplines, it seeks to facilitate the emergence of new knowledge by reflecting on the Latina/o reality in the United States as an epistemic locus: a place from which to start as well as the source of what is known and how it is known. The task of elaborating a liberation and decolonial epistemology emerges from the questions and concerns of Latina/os as a minoritized and marginalized group. Refusing to be rendered invisible by the dominant discourse, the contributors to this volume show the unexpected and original ways in which U.S. Latina/o social and historical loci are generative places for the creation of new matrices of knowledge.

Americans By Heart: Undocumented Latino Students and the Promise of Higher Education by: William Perez
Available November 21st
Available November 25th
Most histories of Catholicism in the United States focus on the experience of Euro-American Catholics, whose views on such concerns as church reform, social issues, and sexual ethics have dominated public debates. Latino Catholicism provides a comprehensive overview of the Latino Catholic experience in America from the sixteenth century to today, and offers the most in-depth examination to date of the important ways the U.S. Catholic Church, its evolving Latino majority, and American culture are mutually transforming one another. Timothy Matovina assesses how Latinos’ attempts to celebrate their faith and bring it to bear on the everyday realities of their lives have shaped parishes, apostolic movements, leadership, ministries, worship, voting patterns, social activism, and much more. At the same time, the lives and faith of Latino Catholics are being dramatically refashioned through the multiple pressures of assimilation, the upsurge of Pentecostal and evangelical religion, other types of religious pluralism, growing secularization, and ongoing controversies over immigration and clergy sexual abuse.
Americans by Heart examines the plight of undocumented Latino students as they navigate the educational and legal tightrope presented by their immigration status. Many of these students are accepted to attend some of our best colleges and universities but cannot afford the tuition to do so because they are not eligible for financial aid or employment. For the few that defy the odds and manage to graduate, their status continues to present insurmountable barriers to employment. This timely and compelling account brings to light the hard work and perseverance of these students and their families; their commitment to education and civic participation; and their deep sense of uncertainty and marginality. Offering a rich in-depth analysis, the author presents a new framework for educational policies that recognizes the merit and potential of undocumented Latino students and links their situation to larger social and policy issues of immigration reform and higher education access.

Annual Tendsetter Awards
Joe is a full-fledged, purebred New Yorker. He was born in Brooklyn. He attended P.S. 198 until the sixth grade when his family moved to Northern Westchester County. He is a graduate of John Jay High School in Cross River. After high school, Joe continued his education at SUNY Brockport, where he earned a B.S. in Communications. Along with his wife Fran and their two boys, Joe still lives in the town where he grew up. Joe joined the Eyewitness News team as a general assignment reporter in 1997. Throughout the last nine years he has established himself as one of the premier street reporters here in the nation’s #1 television market. Versatility is his strength. Crime, politics, education, transportation, business, whatever the subject, Joe has covered it all with an engaging and energetic style that fellow New Yorkers have come to know and love.
Q&A Where did you grow up? I grew up in Brooklyn, attended PS 198 until the 6th grade, and moved to Northern Westchester County thereafter. I still live in Northern Westchester with my wife & sons. Who are your favorite artists, both Latino & general market? I grew up with the sounds of Edgar Langombo, and I also like Marc Anthony. As for my general market tastes, they are a bit more eclectic than most. I can go from salsa to country to rock, and everything in between. Define your experience of growing up Latino, and define your experience of being Latino today. Well, how far back are we talking about? It’s hard to define it into words, really. I will say this: I didn’t realize I was “Latino” until I left Brooklyn and moved to Westchester, where Latinos are few & far between. Now, not only are there a lot more Latinos in the Greater New York area, there are a lot more in Westchester County -- it’s nice to see more people who understand the things that are important to me, and to other Latinos as well, especially things like family. What advice would you give to a young Latino looking to enter your field? The advice I would give transcends cultural barriers -- it goes for Latinos and non-Latinos looking to enter the journalism field: do it because you love it, and because it’s your passion. Don’t do it because you want the “fame,” the notoriety, or the “face time,” because it’s a lot of work.

Perhaps most memorable for viewers has been Joe’s extensive coverage of the late Pope John Paul II. Before the Holy Father’s death, Joe followed the globetrotting Pontiff on his trips to Cuba, Mexico, and the Holy Land, providing New Yorkers with local angles to worldly events. Joe was at the Vatican for the Pope’s Silver Anniversary and for his death, when millions flocked to Rome to say goodbye to the spiritual leader. And lastly, Joe was at St. Peter’s Square when the white smoke from the Sistine Chapel informed the world of the historic election of Pope Benedict the XVI.
