The Future of Media Emanating from the continued success of the award winning TV magazine show OPEN on BronxNet, is a new program hosted and produced by High School students called OPEN 2.0. The students work in all production capacities shooting, writing, hosting, and producing in the BronxNet studios at Lehman College, and out in the community to cover real issues of interest to their peers as well as adults.

Brianna Graham of JFK HS, Kimberly Cionca of Lehman HS, Calvin Kendrick of Bronx HS of Visual Arts, Carlton Miller & Michael Cadenas of JFK HS are among the students receiving Certificates of Achievement for OPEN 2.0 from Youth Media Coordinator Marisa M. White, April Horton of Verizon, and Michael Max Knobbe of BronxNet

Hosts of OPEN 2.0 have conducted interviews with their peers as well as NY City Councilman James Vacca about public transportation, Bronx Chamber of Commerce President Lenny Caro about preparing for careers, and an in-depth interview with Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz, Jr. about a range of issues facing Bronxites. Borough President Diaz states “BronxNet is once again leading the way and innovating in the area of youth media and journalism, opening up channels so our young people can have a voice to speak of the issues.” BronxNet Executive Director Michael Max Knobbe relates “The students participating as the production team for OPEN 2.0, are developing high-level skills that will prepare them to bring new standards of quality to the ways we share ultra-local information and connect to the world. Communities will greatly benefit as the students of OPEN 2.0 have chosen to focus on a range of issues, including education, community, health, entrepreneurship, social issues, arts and life.” Students from Lehman High School, John F. Kennedy High School, Harry S. Truman High School, Bronx High School of Visual Arts, Jonathan Levin High School and School for Community Research and Learning have been producing under the supervision of BronxNet Youth Media Coordinator Marisa White. Mrs. White shares “The incredibly supportive teachers from the different high schools that work with us in the studio are impressed with how OPEN 2.0 energizes students, positively effects schoolwork, and encourages students from different schools to work together.” Visit www.bronxnet.org for more information. 2 NOVEMBER 2010

All About Trends...and Trendsetters What, exactly, is a “trend”? The word gets bandied about very easily, and is used to describe everything from clothes to diet pills to celebrities to fashion. We say that “this designer is trendy,” but what do we mean? We say that “the trend in this country is toward online education,” but what do we mean? Webster’s Dictionary defines a trend as “the general direction in which something tends to move,” but defines “trendsetter” as “a taste-maker, a role-model, someone worthy of imitation.” One might say that a trendsetter, by definition, defines trends.

It seems a little ostentatious of us to suggest that we at LatinTRENDS Magazine are the first and only trendsetters of our kind -- which is why we, as a magazine, have chosen to honor a wonderfully diverse group of Latinos who have defined trends -- who are trendsetters -- in their respective fields. By honoring these trendsetters at the Latino Trendsetter Awards -- now in its ninth year -- we are not only honoring them as individuals, but as distinguished members of a diverse and hardy culture. In turn, they are not just

accepting an award, but they are hoping to inspire others to make positive choices for their future. It’s too easy to discuss the negative effects of the urban sprawl on the new generation of bilingual, bicultural Latinos -- crime, gangs, drugs, school failures -- because, after all, we see it on our local news every night. Instead of bringing more “gloom and doom,” we have opted to be a positive force for our bilingual, bicultural future, in the hopes that the future generations will be inspired by these stories to make the right choices for themselves, their futures, and their children’s futures. This year, our Latino Trendsetter Awards will be held at the Marriott Marquis in NYC’s Times Square. Be sure to visit our websites at www.latintrends.com and www. latinotrendsetter.com for exclusive video, photos, and stories from the event! In the meantime, we encourage you to read the stories about our honorees, show pride in your culture and its achievements, and -- most of all -- be inspired enough by their stories to set your own trends...to be a trendsetter in your own life.

Sonia Marie De Leon de Vega, noted symphony and opera conductor, has achieved distinction as a creative and consummate musician, as a woman in a groundbreaking career role, and as a leading influence in the growing Latino culture in the United States. Her musical talents have inspired a large following in Southern California through live orchestral presentations, as well as an international audience through televised performances in the United States, Latin America and Europe.

She was the first woman in history to receive a Vatican invitation to conduct a symphony orchestra at a Papal Mass.

Univision, Mervyns, and Target named her Outstanding Latina of the Year in 2000. Hispanic Business Magazine voted her one of the 100 most influential Hispanics in the United States in 2001 and 2005. In April 2005 Hispanic Business Magazine named her in their “80 Elite Women” list.

On October 15, Santa Cecilia Orchestra (SCO) launched its 18th Opening Season Celebration at Center for the Arts, a fundraiser and celebration, featuring its string orchestra performing music by Respighi and selections from Vivaldi’s and Piazzolla’s “Four Seasons” with violin soloist Mark Menzies. Maestra De León de Vega conducted and spoke about the music and the orchestra’s programs. The Santa Cecilia Orchestra (SCO) 2010-2011 Season will run through May 22, 2011 with five concerts taking place at Center for the Arts in Eagle Rock and Thorne Hall at Occidental College. SCO is fulfilling its mission by offering full orchestra concerts, chamber concerts and its nationally acclaimed Discovering Music Program.

Special Report: Are Latinas & Other Fashion Week Models Being Deliberately Excluded? By: Bernadette Giacomazzo In September of 2007, the New York Times reported that, of the 101 runway shows that took place during New York’s Fashion Week, 33% of shows employed zero models “of color” (Black, Latina/Hispanic, Asian, and other “non-white” ethnicities). And, if a recent article in Jezebel is to be believed, not much has changed in three years. According to Jenna Sauers at Jezebel, at New York’s Spring/Summer 2011 Fashion Week last month, there were 128 New York shows and presentations that were covered by Style.com. Those 128 shows together presented 4,170 runway looks – or, almost 5,000 opportunities to choose a woman or girl to model that outfit. Unfortunately, as this diagram shows, 3,410 of those opportunities, or 81.8%, went to white models. That means of course that 760, or 18.2%, went to models that were non-white. Non-white Latina models were used 95 times in all of fashion week, or around 2.3% of the time, and Asian models were used 296 times, or 7.1% of the time. Black models were used 353 times, or 8.4% of the time. Models of other races were used 16 times, or 0.4% of the time. This season, there were six shows and presentations that included no models of color at all. These included Philosophy di Alberta Ferretti, Mulberry, Reem Acra, and Prada. Prada, of course, is the Italian global luxury brand that went more than a decade without casting even a single black model in any of its shows. There were also plenty of shows that had all-white casts but for one or two models, including Anna Sui, Calvin Klein, Donna Karan, Jill Stuart, Narciso Rodriguez (a Latino not casting ANY Latina models?!), Rodarte, and Diesel Black Gold. Who were the designers who did things better? Phillip Lim (who hired nine models of color) and Sophie Théallet (who showed 13 of her 32 looks on models of color), had very diverse casts. Rachel Comey, Betsey Johnson, Costello Tagliapietra, Tara Subkoff’s relaunched Imitation line, Jason Wu, Christian Siriano (a Latino who actually did cast Latina models), Gwen Stefani’s L.A.M.B. line, and Richard Chai were also among those labels that valued diversity in their casting. But this still is no reason to celebrate: at an event where white models can expect to book upwards of 60 shows apiece, Latina models can only expect a mere fraction of that number in bookings: Simone Carvalho booked only nine shows, and Juana Burga booked only eight shows. Why doesn’t fashion — especially multi-national brands whose profitability rests on convincing the largest number of consumers possible to purchase their lines — have more consideration for the beauty and worth of people who aren’t white? Is New York Fashion Week plateauing at around 82% white, no matter how much advocacy or consciousness-raising gets done, or how many trend pieces get written about this issue? Will it ever become unacceptable to put on a fashion show in a thoroughly multi-racial city like New York and not hire a single model of color? As long as these questions remain, we’ll continue to ask them, time and time again, and look for answers in seasons to come.

Tiempo Libre: From Cuba to NYC Three-time Grammy-nominated Tiempo Libre is one the hottest young Latin bands today. Tiempo Libre’s members were all classically trained at La ENA, Cuba’s premiere conservatory during the “Special Period” in Cuba. Today, the group is a hit in the U.S. and abroad, celebrated for its incendiary, joyful performances of timba, an irresistible, dance-inducing mix of high-voltage Latin jazz and the seductive rhythms of son. In the summer of 2002, at their Ravinia Festival debut opening for Celia Cruz, Tiempo Libre dazzled a crowd of more than 12,000 people. They were quickly reengaged by Ravinia for Summer 2003, where they shared a bill with Aretha Franklin, performing before an enthusiastic crowd of 20,000.

Since that time, the group’s busy touring schedule in the United States has included performances at Miami’s JVC Jazz Festival, Yoshi’s in Oakland, CA, SOB’s in New York City, Jazz at Lincoln Center, Celebrate Brooklyn, New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, Festival International de Louisiane, Rochester International Jazz Festival, Society of the Performing Arts in Houston, Kimmel Center, Orange County Performing Arts Center, California Center for the Arts, New Haven Jazz Festival, California World Fest, Lotus Music Festival, New York’s River-to-River Festival at the South Street Seaport, as well as the Colorado, Interlochen, Green and Eastern music festivals. Their latest album, Bach in Havana, was just released on Sony Records. They will be performing on December 10th at the Peter Jay Sharpe Theatre in NYC. LatinTRENDS.COM 15

Client 9: The Rise and Fall of Eliot Spitzer

Harry Potter And the Deathly Hallows

Genre: Family, Comedy Starring: Zachary Levi, Mandy Moore In theatres November 24th

Genre: Documentary Eliot Spitzer, Ashley Dupre In Theatres November 5th

When the kingdom’s most wanted - and most charming - bandit Flynn Rider (voice of Zachary Levi) hides out in a mysterious tower, he’s taken hostage by Rapunzel (voice of Mandy Moore), a beautiful and feisty tower-bound teen with 70 feet of magical, golden hair. Flynn’s curious captor, who’s looking for her ticket out of the tower where she’s been locked away for years, strikes a deal with the handsome thief and the unlikely duo sets off on an action-packed escapade, complete with a super-cop horse, an overprotective chameleon and a gruff gang of pub thugs.

Nicknamed “The Sheriff of Wall Street,” when he was NY’s Attorney General, Eliot Spitzer prosecuted crimes by America’s largest financial institutions and some of the most powerful executives in the country. His election to Governor was with the largest margin in the state’s history. Then, Spitzer’s meteoric rise turned into a precipitous fall when the New York Times revealed that Spitzer - the paragon of rectitude - had been caught seeing prostitutes. As his powerful enemies gloated, his supporters questioned the timing of it all.

Genre: Action/Adventure Starring: Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, Rupert Grint In Theatres November 19th

In the south Texas town of Three Rivers, segregation between the Anglo and Mexican American communities had long been a way of life. But with the onset of World War II, men and women from both communities joined together to support the war effort. One of them was a young MexicanAmerican husband and father named Felix Longoria. A decorated soldier, Private Longoria was killed in battle in the Philippines. When his remains were returned, his widow Beatrice wanted him to be honored in his hometown. She was devastated when the funeral home owner, Tom Kennedy, denied 16 NOVEMBER 2010

receiving as part of the GI Bill. Garcia began to mobilize, creating an organization to fight for their rights called the American GI Forum.

Beatrice sought help from Hector Garcia, a doctor from Corpus Christi who was making a name for himself as a hard-edged civil rights advocate. After the war, he returned to South Texas where thousands of Mexican Americans desperately needed medical care. Many of Garcia’s patients were veterans but were unable to get care from the Veterans Administration. They told him that they couldn’t get money to go to school or start businesses -- benefits white veterans were

Incensed by Mrs. Longoria’s plight, Garcia called the local paper and fired off telegrams to elected officials demanding justice. One telegram went to the newly elected junior Senator from Texas, Lyndon Baines Johnson. Johnson immediately responded, offering to have Private Longoria buried with full military honors at Arlington National Cemetery. The family accepted and today Felix Longoria’s body rests on a hill overlooking the Washington Monument.

The

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, the seventh and final adventure in the Harry Potter film series, is a much-anticipated motion picture event to be told in two full-length parts. Part 1 begins as Harry, Ron and Hermione set out on their perilous mission to track down and destroy the secret to Voldemort’s immortality and destruction—the Horcruxes. On their own, without the guidance of their professors or the protection of Professor Dumbledore, the three friends must now rely on one another more than ever.
