Bronx Flavor & BronxNet

by Michael Max Knobbe

The flavors of the world abound in the Bronx, one of the most diverse places in the world. These global culinary opportunities can seem a mystery, especially if you treat the Bronx as just an expressway. At BronxNet we train and encourage independent and diverse local voices to share their vision through media while developing ultra-local programs that connect us to the world. Through the BronxNet television program Bronx Flavor, culinary ambassador Baron Ambrosia invites you on an adventure that reveals cultural traditions while sharing authentic family run restaurants. The amazing action packed narratives of Bronx Flavor take place along the landscape of the Bronx and in the kitchens and dining rooms of restaurants like Xochimilco, Barry’s Jerk Delight, El Rincon de los Taxitstas Chimi Truck, Siam Square, and many others. These are places that may not be on your radar but should be. You can experience Bronx Flavor by watching BronxNet Channel 67 on Cablevision, and Channel 33 on Verizon FiOS in the Bronx on Tuesdays @9pm, and Thursdays @ 11pm, and at bronxnet.org. BronxNet is currently sharing encore presentations of Bronx Flavor on NYC Life Time Warner Channel 25 on Wednesdays at 9pm. Michael Max Knobbe is the Executive Director of BronxNet

Latin Pride

September 15th marks the start of National Hispanic Heritage Month, and we here at LatinTRENDS are happy to present this issue – our second under the LatinTRENDS banner – as the “Latin Pride” Issue. In his last HBO special before his death, the late, great comedian George Carlin said that one shouldn’t be proud of one’s heritage – be it Irish, Italian, Latino, or anything else – because heritage is something that one cannot control. While Carlin had a point – heritage is something that you’re born into, not something you achieve – I disagree with the sentiment that one shouldn’t be proud of one’s heritage.

Juan Guillén Publisher

Pride in one’s heritage has nothing to do with racism – or “reverse racism,” or any permutation of racism therein. Rather, pride in one’s heritage is a form of ancestor worship – a practice that has been done by countless peoples throughout countless generations and in countless countries. It is an acknowledgement of their struggles – it is an appreciation of all they went through to make things better for us, their descendants, even though they knew that they would never live to see the fruits of their labors. Certainly, there are times when too much “heritage pride” can fall down a slippery slope, and give one a feeling of entitlement or superiority – not a positive sentiment by any means. But for the most part, pride in one’s culture provides one with an appreciation, a realization, an identity, and a relation towards one’s cultura. With this in mind, we wanted to take a less-traditional approach to Latin Pride than what is normally called for in an issue like this:

instead of focusing on “the usual suspects” that stir up emotions of Latin Pride, we wanted to give you a glimpse into Latinos in various American subcultures – places you wouldn’t expect to find Latinos are actually places where Latinos thrive, and have been thriving, for the longest time. For example, photographer Bashira Webb gives us a glimpse into the Latin Alternative Music Conference, where artists like King Chango, Yotuel of Orishas, and Maldita Vecinidad are finding their own musical voices at the only Spanish-language conference of its kind. Meanwhile, our associate editor Bernadette Giacomazzo bangs her head in the name of “metal health” to bring us Mayhemfest, a thrashingly-loud festival where Latinos of all shapes and sizes bring us “pop culture with a metalico twist.” Dominican native Andres Aquino is redefining haute couture fashion with his successful Couture Fashion Week (which can be found on page 10), and various celebrities (from Vince Neil to Jordana Brewster to Rita Hayworth) help us rethink our definition of “being Latino” as they show us their cultural pride on pages 22 and 23. Of course, our cover story – Susie Castillo – also fits into our theme of “pride”: her new NBC show, School Pride, focuses on the lovely Latina and her fearless team, who take on various run-down schools throughout the country and fix them up. Think of it as “Extreme Makeover” with an educational twist! You can read our exclusive interview with the former Miss USA on page 24. Remember – no matter your heritage, no matter your nationality, and no matter your race, todos somos Latinos, y viva la cultura!

mayhemfest When one thinks of “heavy metal,” one usually thinks of screaming, motorcycleriding, heavily-tattooed Anglos. But did you know that some of the most thrashin’ bands have Latinos in their ranks? (Rage Against the Machine, Ill Nino, Metallica, and of course Slayer, are the most obvious examples of “Latino metalheads.” They ARE amongst you, you know....) Last month’s MayhemFest in Holmdel, NJ, really showed the raza throwing the goat - everyone from Atreyu bassist Travis Miguel to Winds of Plague drummer Art Cruz to In This Moment founder Pascual Romero represented for the bilingual, bicultural crowd. When it came to the mosh pit, the crowd accepted people of all shapes, sizes, colors, and creeds...the only requirement to get your thrash on?

Couture Fashion Week This month, during Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week, New Yorkers will be in for a special treat: Couture Fashion Week, a high-end production put on by native Dominican Andres Aquino. Couture Fashion Week had its successful debut in February 2003 in New York City before an audience of international press and fashion buyers, with the participation of talented designers from around the world. This year’s show will feature exclusive haute couture designs from such talented designers as Catalin Botezatu, Morgan Sarver, Paulina Lopez, and even Mr. Aquino himself. Mr. Aquino oversees all production aspects - from sponsors to designers, from venue selection to model casting, from technical staff operations to public relations. Couture Fashion Week is a multiday event showcasing couture and luxury fashion. The event is held in top venues in New York City, West Palm Beach, and other high-profile cities, and is attended by upscale consumers, invited VIPs, the press and high-end store buyers. As a top fashion photographer, the multi-talented Aquino has covered hundreds of designer runway shows in Europe, South America, Canada, Africa and the USA. He is also the founder of Fashion Syndicate Press, a leading photographic agency providing photos and feature articles to the worldwide fashion press since 1997. Andres Aquino received both his B.A (summa cum laude) and M.A. from Boston College, where he was awarded “Scholar of the College.” He has years of experience in show production, facility management, talent management, event coordination, publishing, and market research as well as teaching, writing, theater directing and business administration. In addition, he has worked in international business consulting, exporting and importing as well as fashion design and fashion merchandising to the boutique market.
