Whether you want to travel back to your family’s homeland or just learn about the culture of people from far away places via media, there are programs for you to watch on BronxNet. Independent Bronx residents learn television production at BronxNet and use those skills to produce programs that air on the BronxNet Independent Cultural Channel, on Cablevision Channel 69, Verizon FiOS Channel 35, and on www. bronxnet.org. Here are just a few programs that can take you on journeys around the world. Honduras New York: “BronxNet channels are very important for us,” says Executive Producer Zenom Valentine about the media outlet that makes it possible for him and his team to produce and air Honduras New York. The program brings news, information and entertainment to the Bronx and beyond. Honduras New York shares the richness of Garifuna culture and introduces those who might be unfamiliar with the culture to the music and heritage of the people. Albanian Culture: “Thousands of people look forward to the airing of the program on Sundays,” says Producer Adem Hasanbelliu about his program Albanian Culture. “We are Albanian-American, not just Albanian. We use the program to highlight our life here as well as in Albania. The program has helped to raise awareness about the Albanian community,” he adds. African Union Profile: The program features live caucus discussions that chronicle milestones in Africa’s development. “African Union Profile helps strengthen the African Union by engaging, informing and connecting members of the sixth region. There is no better market for an African Diaspora show like African Union Profile than New York City and the Bronx in particular, where the majority of residents trace their ancestry from the continent,” says Producer Sheikh Moussa Drammeh. By 2050, one in four Americans will be Hispanic. The community grew 43% in the last decade (surpassing 50 million). 1 in 5 U.S. moms are Hispanic. 2 out of 3 English speaking Hispanics, say that they want to retain their Hispanic Heritage. 75% of Hispanics are between the ages of 18-49. 92% of Latinos, 18 and under are U.S. born. The youth are our future. Today’s students will become tomorrow’s leaders.

But, even more importantly, it is essential that all students learn to understand the ethnic diversity that is our country, according to Multicultural Education: Issues and Perspectives (Banks and Banks, 1992). Integrating the cultures in the social studies classroom helps develop “ethnic literacy” in all students. Developing ethnic literacy fosters pride in one’s own culture and a respect and appreciation for the uniqueness of others. Accidentally blinded in his youth, this black Cuban of Congolese ancestry inspired generations of musicians and bands such as Cuba’s Miguelito Valdez, Miguelito Cuni, and Chappottín y sus Estrellas. In New York City, students of his style included Tito Puente, Eddie Palmieri, and Larry Harlow, and from Puerto Rico, he influenced Cortijo y su Combo and Enrique “Papo” Lucca’s “La Sonora Poncena” among many others. Arsenio learned to play percussion at an early age and eventually became a master of the typical Cuban six string guitar with its three sets of double strings called “Tres.” After a successful career as a band leader and composer in his native Cuba, Rodriguez came to NYC in 1947 in an attempt to restore his vision. After confronting the reality of his permanent blindness and resigned to his fate, he composed “La Vida es un Sueno”, (Life is a Dream) that became a popular bolero with its fatalistic sentimental lyrics. In the early 1950’s, Rodriguez relocated to NYC where he recruited Cubans, Puerto Ricans, Afro Americans, and other Latin American musicians for his “Conjunto” and big band ensembles, playing in prestigious popular venues such as the Palladium, Apollo Theater, Manhattan Center, and Carnegie Hall. Arsenio promoted an enduring relationship with the neighborhoods of the South Bronx and Spanish Harlem (“El Barrio) where he lived and played at local clubs, i.e., El Club Cubano, The Tropicana Club, and Park Plaza. The kinship with these communities inspired Arsenio to dedicate two compositions ”Como se Goza en el Barrio” (El Barrio is a Lot of Fun) and “La 8 SEPTEMBER 2011

Arsenio Rodriguez (Born Ignacio Arsenio Travieso Scull) is recognized by musicologists as the creator of the style of Afro-Cuban music called “Son Montuno.”

Gente Del Bronx “(The People of the Bronx). Arsenio died in Los Angeles, California on December 30, 1970. Shortly after his death, Larry Harlow dedicated an album to him entitled “Tribute to Arsenio Rodriguez “on Fania Records. In 2006, Professor David F. Garcia of the University of North Carolina published an authoritative book entitled, “Arsenio Rodriguez and the Transnational Flows of Latin Popular Music” (Published by Temple University Press) which documents and analyzes the history and significance of Rodriguez’s musical contributions. In March of 2010, Grupo Folklorico y Experimental Nuevayorquino a legendary New York Latin musical ensemble, performed at a Gala concert produced by Rene Lopez & Andy Kaufman dedicated to the music of Arsenio Rodriguez at Hostos Community College. A CD of that concert, entitled,”Yo Naci en Africa…100 years of the music of Arsenio Rodriguez” and coproduced by Rene Lopez and musical director and bassist, Andy Gonzalez, is soon to be released. Selections from the concerts CD as well as from previous Grupo Folkloirico recordings will be performed at a concert at Lincoln Center’s Damrosch Park on Saturday August 6, 2011. In sharp contrast to his musical and cultural legacy, Arsenio Rodriguez’s final resting place has remained without a grave marker since his burial on January 6, 1971. Rumors of possible family disagreements and politics have condemned Arsenio to eternal sleep with neatly cropped grass covering his remains like a conspiracy concealing his ignominious fate. Hopefully, by calling attention to the present state of affairs, the enigmatic issues regarding the lack of a memorial will eventually be resolved and an appropriate grave marker bearing his name will be erected.

When he stumbles upon an image of himself as a little boy on a missing persons website, all of Nathan’s darkest fears come true: he realizes his parents are not his own and his life is a lie, carefully fabricated to hide something more mysterious and dangerous than he could have ever imagined.

A woman becomes a professional killer in order to seek revenge against the ruthless gangster who murdered her parents in this action thriller from director Olivier Megaton and writer/producer Luc Besson.

Apollo 18 Directed by Gonzalo Lopez-Gallego Apollo 18 is an upcoming 2011 American horror film directed by Gonzalo Lopez-Gallego and produced by Timur Bekmambetov. The film centers around a fictional premise of an actual Apollo 18 mission that was launched in December 1974, that supposedly never returned and as a result, signified the real reason why the United States never commissioned another expedition to the moon. The film is shot in a “mock-umentary” found footage style, supposedly of the lost footage of the Apollo 18 mission that was only recently discovered. The film will be Lopez-Gallego’s first English-language film. After various release date changes, the film is currently scheduled to be released on September 2, 2011. Apollo 18 is a found footage style film set in December 1974, about a post-Apollo 17 mission to the Moon that takes on a premise of why NASA discontinued the Apollo moon missions. The plot involves a government coverup of the 14 SEPTEMBER 2011

Apollo 18 mission after parasitic lifeforms on the Moon discovered the crew and began to attack them. Much of the back-story remains unknown; however, the movie posters in English indicate the Russian KGB role in Soviet lunar conspiracy and the Russian movie posters show inscriptions in English suggesting an American government cover up in lunar conspiracy. In the trailer, an American astronaut finds a dead cosmonaut and a Soviet LK Lander on the lunar surface. Officially, Apollo 17, launched December 17th, 1972 was the last manned mission to the moon. But a year later, in December of 1973, two American astronauts were sent on a secret mission to the moon funded by the US Department of Defense. What you are about to see is the actual footage which the astronauts captured on that mission. While NASA denies its authenticity, others say it’s the real reason we’ve never gone back to the moon. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Dimension Films head Bob Weinstein denied the film was a work of fiction, stating that “We

didn’t shoot anything, we found it. Found baby!” This claim was met with skepticism. The Science & Entertainment Exchange provided a science consultation to the film’s production team. Apollo 18 is currently scheduled for release on September 2, 2011. Originally scheduled for March 2011, the film’s release date was moved five times during the year (including to April 2011, January 2012, August 2011, and September 2, 2011).

In this comprehensive comparative study, Jorge Duany explores how migrants to the United States from Cuba, the Dominican Republic, and Puerto Rico maintain multiple ties to their countries of origin. Chronicling these diasporas from the end of World War II to the present, Duany argues that each sending country’s relationship to the United States shapes the transnational experience for each migrant group, from legal status and migratory patterns to work activities and the connections migrants retain with their home countries. Blending extensive ethnographic, archival, and survey research, Duany proposes that contemporary migration challenges the traditional concept of the nationstate. Telling the affecting stories of eighty gay, bisexual, and transgender (GBT) Latino activists and volunteers living in Chicago and San Francisco, Compañeros: Latino Activists in the Face of AIDS closely details how these individuals have been touched or transformed by the AIDS epidemic. Weaving together activists’ responses to oppression and stigma, their encounters with AIDS, and their experiences as GBTs and Latinos in North America and Latin America, Jesus RamirezValles explores the intersection of civic involvement with ethnic and sexual identity. Even as activists battle multiple sources of oppression, they are able to restore their sense of family connection and self-esteem through the creation of an alternative space in which community members find value in their relationships with one another. In demonstrating the transformative effects of a nurturing community environment for GBT Latinos affected by the AIDS epidemic, Ramirez-Valles illustrates that members find support in one another, as compañeros, in their struggles with homophobia, gender discrimination, racism, poverty, and forced migration.

Forging People explores the way in which Hispanic American thinkers in Latin America and Latino/a philosophers in the United States have posed and thought about questions of race, ethnicity, and nationality, and how they have interpreted the most significant racial and ethnic labels used in Hispanic America in connection with issues of rights, nationalism, power, and identity. Following the first introductory chapter, each of the essays addresses one or more influential thinkers, ranging from Bartolomé de Las Casas on race and the rights of Amerindians; to Simon Bolívar’s struggle with questions of how to forge a nation from disparate populations; to modern and contemporary thinkers on issues of race, unity, assimilation, and diversity. Each essay carefully and clearly presents the views of key authors in their historical and philosophical context and provides brief biographical sketches and reading lists, as aids to students and other readers. “Latin American philosophy has a long history of engagement with issues of race, ethnicity, and nationality.
