Latitude is the title of the International Promotion Project for Brazilian Art Business which is a partnership between Apex-Brasil (Brazilian Trade and Investment Promotion Agency) and ABACT (Brazilian Association of Contemporary Art). It was started in 2007 with the core goal of creating business opportunities for the art sector mainly through cultural promotion activities. During this period, the number of members increased. Currently, 49 primary market art galleries participate in Latitude, representing more than 1000 artists. Through a rich programme of activities that ranges from supporting Brazilian galleries in international fairs to promoting Art Immersion Trips for international guests in Brazil, Latitude aims to improve professionalism within the art market and provide new opportunities for Brazilian galleries to trade internationally.

BRAZILIAN ART SCENE: DOMESTIC AND INTERNATIONAL EXPANSION With one of the most prosperous and promising art scenes in the world, Brazil is quickly expanding its reputation as a global art centre. Maintaining its place as the world’s sixth largest economy, it is a country that has steered clear of much of the economic turmoil of recent years and is host to original and vibrant production in contemporary art which is grounded in a solid historical tradition.
Miami B.indd 3
Since the 1970’s, Brazilian artists have gradually gained space and recognition in the world’s most renowned international art spaces. In 1969, Helio Oiticica held a solo show at Whitechapel and in 1970, his work was shown at the Museum of Modern Art in New York with that of Artur Barrio and Cildo Meireles. In the 1980’s, pioneering art gallerists such as Thomas Cohn, Luisa Strina and Marcantonio Vilaça played an important role, as they started to participate in international art fairs. This gave contemporary Brazilian artists, such as Jac Leirner and Tunga, an international stage on which to present their work. Since then, Brazilian art has been put on the map. The cultural exchange between Brazil and the rest of the art world has increased dramatically and has given international critics, curators and researchers greater access to Brazilian art. Just in 2014, the United States have held a number of shows on Brazilian art. Cruzamentos: Contemporary in Brasil encompassed all of the Wexner Center’s galleries with works by 35 artists. Under
the Same Sun at the Guggenheim Museum and Other Primary Structures at the Jewish Museum in New York are two remarkable comprehensive exhibitions that put Brazilian art in a broader geographical and aesthetical context, respectively. Not to mention the solo shows Lygia Clark: The Abandonment of the Art, 1948-1988 at the MoMA in New York and now Beatriz Milhazes: Jardim Botânico at the Perez Art Museum in Miami featuring Brazilian female artists from two different generations to coincide with Frieze NY and Art Basel in Miami Beach. In the domestic realm, some of the country’s most important cultural institutions, like the Museum of Modern Art in São Paulo, were founded in the 1940s. Bienal de São Paulo, now in its 31st edition, began in 1951, and is second only to Venice as the oldest functioning international biennial. These events helped create a rich interchange between different art forms and traditions, helping to consolidate the unique aesthetics of Brazil.
Beyond the biennial, the country currently has some prestigious public institutions such and Pinacoteca do Estado and Museu de Arte do Rio (MAR), as well as some non-profit private foundations like Casa Daros and the 3000-acre Inhotim, an assemblage of galleries and site-specific works surrounded by tropical botanical gardens. São Paulo stands as Brazil’s financial and cultural center, positioning itself as a new hot spot for the global art market. Rio de Janeiro also holds important museums, galleries and collections. Together, the two cities account for over 85% of the art trade in Brazil. SP-Arte and ArtRio, started in 2005 and 2011 respectively, have quickly become relevant international fairs, seeing a steady increase in the percentage of foreign galleries exhibiting over the years. With a growing number of collectors, art professionals and spectators, Brazil is now at an optimal position to share its creative energy, to provoke debate and to create new opportunities for cultural exchange.

A Gentil Carioca was founded 11 years ago by artists Márcio Botner, Laura Lima and Ernesto Neto, conceived in a melting pot in order to captivate and diffuse art’s diversity within Brazil and the world. We believe each work of art is a cultural particle with enough potential to irradiate culture and education. In the same way history can be thought, forged, documented and changed, A Gentil Carioca is a place where artistic or political contexts can be revitalized, in many ways. Therefore, it invests heavily in partnerships with curators and the development of its artists’ careers, allowing the public to come into contact with part of the work that it develops. Zipper is an art gallery that presents new talents to the market. A meeting point for contemporary artists, curators and collectors focusing on various platforms: painting, sculpture, photography, video, drawing, installations, prints and new media. Led by a young team guided by Fabio Cimino, who has decades of experience within the art market, the gallery offers conditions to exhibit and motivate the work of a group of new talents. Highly technological from its architecture project to the diversification of media that gave access to information about its artists, Zipper is tuned with the spirit of its time in content, physical form and virtual presence.
