Y como el futuro pasa por LATITUDES nada mejor que tocar la Amazonía para comenzar en él. Porque

estamos convencidos que el futuro de todos pasa por la selva. En la Amazonía se concentra la quinta parte de las reservas de agua dulce del planeta, su biodiversidad alcanza récords mundiales, sus bosques regulan el clima y en ellos se encuentran látex, resinas y esencias imprescindibles para el ser humano. Esa superficie infinita de árboles absorbe los gases que calientan nuestra atmósfera, cuidando nuestra vida y la de las generaciones futuras, y los guardianes de muchos de estos conocimientos son los pueblos que habitan, desde hace miles de años, este bello y complejo ecosistema.

Con LATITUDES visitamos la China, recorremos montañas cargadas de petroglifos, descubrimos los

faros del litoral peruano, nos refugiamos en un lodge en la profundidad de la selva del Manu, descubrimos sitios aislados y recónditos, visitamos librerías, probamos restaurantes, bares y discotecas donde pasar la noche, entre otras muchas cosas más.

Nos despedimos de GPS Perú para comenzar nuevas andanzas con LATITUDES. Celebramos ambas

cosas con todos nuestros amigos y lectores y, como siempre, les invitamos a colaborar, fotografiar y viajar.

Gracias a todas y todos los que comparten sus experiencias con nosotros. Especialmente a los colaboradores fieles que han estado dos años con GPS Perú y que siguen apostando por LATITUDES.

The future runs through the jungle

And our future runs through LATITUDES. After 11 editions with GPS Peru, we embark on a new project and

we launch the travel magazine LATITUDES. With more pages, new sections and collaborators, new topics in addition to the pleasure of traveling, and new countries as well as Peru.

And since the future runs through LATITUDES nothing better than starting with the Amazon Region in

order to begin in it. Because we are convinced that everybody’s future is in the jungle. The Amazon Region concentrates one fifth of the world’s water reserves, its biodiversity reaches world records, its forests regulate the climate and in them it is possible to find latex, resins and essential essences for humans. This endless surface of trees absorbs the gases that create global warming, thus, protecting our lives and those of future generations. Also, the people that keep the ancient knowledge are the groups that have inhabited this area, this beautiful and complex ecosystem, for thousands of years.

With LATITUDES we visit China, we travel across mountains covered with petroglyphs, we discover the

lighthouses of the Peruvian coast, we find refuge in a lodge in the depths of the Manu jungle, we discover isolated and hidden sites, and we try libraries, restaurants, bars and discotheques where it is possible to spend the night, among other things.

We say goodbye to GPS Peru to being a new journey with LATITUDES. We celebrate both things with all our

friends and readers and, as always, we invite you to collaborate, photograph and travel. Thanks to all of you who share your experiences with us. Especially our loyal collaborators who have been with GPS Peru for two years, and who continue to work with us in LATITUDES.

An enthusiast conservationist of cultural and natural patrimony, he works as independent writer and screenwriter.

Abogado en ejercicio, con maestría en Derecho del Trabajo. Ejerce la docencia en diversas universidades peruanas, en especial en la Pontificia Universidad Católica. Su primer proyecto fotográfico registró todos los faros del litoral peruano. Desde entonces, se dedica a viajar y a fotografiar naturaleza y vida silvestre.

Practicing lawyer, with a masters in Work Law. He teaches in diverse Peruvian universities, especially at the Pontificia Universidad Católica. His first photographic project registered all the lighthouses of the Peruvian coast. Since, he travels and photographs nature and wildlife.

Pucallpa es una de las principales ciudades de la Amazonía peruana. La intensidad urbana contrasta con una naturaleza donde destaca el río Ucayali, y una serie de lagos y quebradas en los que abunda la vida silvestre y el esplendor artístico de los shipibos.

Pucallpa is one of the main cities in the Peruvian Amazon region. The urban intensity contrasts with nature where the Ucayali River and a series of lakes and gullies stand out with an abundance of wildlife and the artistic splendor of the Shipibo people.

Es la tierra roja, es May Ushin para el milenario pueblo shipibo que habitó estos parajes, es Puka Allpa en quechua. Uno de los nexos de comunicación más importantes de la selva central que a través de sus ríos sustenta la vida de infinidad de comunidades, pueblos y ciudades.

enjoy a cold camu camu juice in the Main Plaza of Pucallpa, capital of the Ucayali region. It is the red land, the May Ushin for the millenary Shipibo ethnic group that inhabited these areas; it is Puka Allpa in Quechua. One of the most important points of communications in the central jungle due to its rivers, which sustain life in many communities, towns and cities.

Cuna de grandes pintores y chamanes, de uno de los pueblos indígenas más reconocidos en su trabajo alfarero y textil, y uno de los centros más activos que hay en la selva peruana. Los shipibos son un grupo de la familia Pano que vive en pequeñas comunidades junto a los ríos y lagos que rodean Pucallpa. Algunas de ellas se pueden visitar, como San Francisco y Nuevo Destino, y conocer el arte que desarrollan en tejidos y cerámicas, en los que llama la atención los intrincados diseños geométricos que en ellos aparecen. Estos diseños remiten a la anaconda, la madre de las aguas, el poder que sostiene el mundo, y a las redes hexagonales que se ven cuando uno toma ayahuasca.

It is known for being the home of some great painters and shamans, for its renowned ceramists and textile makers, and for being one of the most active centers in the Peruvian Amazon region. The Shipibo people are a group from the Pano family that live in small communities along the rivers and lakes around Pucallpa. It is possible to visit some of these communities like San Francisco and Nuevo Destino, and thus, discover their beautiful textiles and ceramics that feature intricate geometric designs. These designs feature the anaconda, the mother of all waters, the power that sustains the world, and the hexagonal nets one sees during an Ayahuasca ceremony.

A Pucallpa se llega por tierra tras un viaje de unas 15 horas desde Lima, en avión o en barcos que navegan por el Amazonas y el Ucayali, el enorme río de 1600 kilómetros, descubierto por Juan Salinas de Loyola. Su Plaza de Armas, en torno a la cual gira el comercio y los principales servicios, es moderna como su iglesia casi semicircular, está adornada con varias esculturas de escenas que recuerdan la época del caucho, y tiene una enorme fuente de agua que contrasta con la noria de colores que está detrás.

Pucallpa can be reached by land after a 15 hours trip from Lima, by plane or by boats that navigate the Amazonas and Ucayali River. This enormous river spreads for 994 miles and was discovered by Juan Salinas de Loyola. Its Main Plaza is the trade center and where all main services can be found. It has a modern style and it is possible to find an almost semicircular church, adorned with many sculptures depicting the age of the rubber barons. It also has an enormous water fountain that contrasts with the colorful waterwheel behind.

Recorrer las calles de Pucallpa en moto es deporte de aventura. A toda velocidad, haciendo equilibrios y adelantando con maniobras imposibles a otros vehículos, se llega en pocos minutos a sus principales atractivos, el zoológico, el jardín botánico Chullachaqui y, sobre todo, Yarinacocha.

En este lago, repleto de peque peques que hacen circuitos por sus aguas para ver aves y delfines saltando, es donde se encuentran varios de los restaurantes emblemáticos que posee Pucallpa, en los que abunda el paiche y la carne de monte acompañados de jugos tropicales de todos los colores. Relativamente cerca de Pucallpa también hay un ecosistema único, un paraíso de aves y pesca el Área de Conservación Regional del lago Ibiría, ubicado en la gran depresión Ucamara que llega hasta Pacaya Samiria.

Going through the streets of Pucallpa on a motorbike is an adventure sport. At full speed, keeping balance and passing cars with impossible maneuvers, one can arrive to its main attractions such as the zoo, the Chullachaqui botanical garden, and most of all, to Yarinacocha. This lake is full of peque peques (traditional motorboats) that offer tours on the river to go bird watching and to see pink dolphins. It is also here where one can find many emblematic restaurants, where paiche and mountain meats are served with tropical juices of every color. Relatively close to Pucallpa there is a unique ecosystem, a paradise for bird watching and fishing, the Ibiria Lake Regional Conservations located in the great Ucamara depression that extends all the way to Pacaya Samiria.

At that moment, the shaman, thanks to the power of the plant, creates melodies with these luminous designs, thus ordering the information and projecting it as healing power through new geometric, musical and fragrant patterns.

Esos dibujos cantados son los que curan al paciente enfermo. Esas melodías geométricas que circulan por el espacio son las que llegan a las mujeres cuando tejen sus tejidos o pintan las grandes tinajas de cerámica, los chomos, creando la geometría que en ellas aparece. Cuando pintaban esos chomos, dos mujeres se ponían en cada lado de la tinaja y mientras escuchaban las melodías las transformaban en líneas y ángulos, terminando las dos en el mismo punto, haciendo su propio camino y sin llegar a verse.

These chanted images cure the sick. These geometric melodies flying around space reach women while they are weaving or painting their great pottery pieces, the chomos, and as a result they create the geometric figures they present. While painting those chomos, two women would stand at each side while listening to the melodies that transformed the lines and angles, ending both at the same point, making their own way without seeing each other.

estido con una túnica que los nativos llaman “cushma” y una corona de plumas de papagayo en la cabeza, Alberto Makeriapa camina sobre una roca sagrada en la selva remota que conecta a la Amazonia con Cusco, tomando aguardiente de caña y soplando la botella como si fuera una flauta. Un aire místico se apodera de él mientras distribuye hojas de coca al pie de la roca sagrada.

Sus pies descalzos avanzan sobre dibujos abstractos tallados en la piedra madre de Jinkiori. Son petroglifos, motivos que tuvieron un valor primordial en la indumentaria de la etnia harakmbut, cuando ellos permanecían desnudos y su única forma de ataviarse era pintando esas mismas figuras sobre sus cuerpos, reflejando su amplio valor para la guerra. Figuras que nadie sabe quién las hizo ni cuándo ni para qué, pero que a hombres sabios les revela una historia milenaria.

Los harakmbut llevan la guerra en los sueños y en la sangre. Nadie ha logrado conquistarlos y quienes lo han intentado han sido despedazados. Su fiereza estaba escrita en esos cuerpos, pintados con diseños rupestres, representaciones abstractas de concepciones cosmológicas, creadas por esos guerreros indomables que se encontraban bajo la influencia de plantas alucinógenas como la ayahuasca o el toé. Alberto hace sonar la botella, bebe, escupe al cielo y habla:

“Nuestros antiguos abuelos conocieron esta piedra ancestral que servía como un lugar para reflexionar y descansar. Todo este acto ritual lo hacían los pescadores con flechas, que sabían dar gracias y tener respeto por la naturaleza, para poder solicitar un permiso protocolar a los seres espirituales de los ríos como la sirena, la boa, el caimán y otros seres de menores poderes, pidiendo armonía y fortaleza para las guerras de los clanes y familias que vivían en estos ríos. Kiori es la energía de los ríos. Así me contaban mis abuelos, gracias”.

ressed in a tunic natives call “cushma” and wearing a macaw feather crown on his head, Alberto Makeriapa walks on a sacred rock in the remote jungle that connects the Amazon with Cusco, drinking cane liquor and blowing into a bottle as if it was a flute. A mystical air takes over him while he distributes coca leaves at the skirts of the sacred rock. With bare feet he walks over abstract pictures carved in the Jinkiori mother rock. They are petroglyphs, motifs that had a primordial value in the clothes of the harakmbut ethnic group when they lived naked and their only way of dressing was by painting these figures on their bodies, reflecting their great value during war. Figures that nobody knows who made them and for what, but which reveal to the wise men a millenary history.

The harakmbut have war in their dreams and in their blood. Nobody has ever managed to conquer them and anyone who has ever tried has been torn to pieces. Their fierceness was written in their bodies, painted in cave paintings, abstract representations of cosmologic conceptions created by these untamable warriors that were under the influence of hallucinogen plants like the ayahuasca or the toe. Alberto makes a sound with the bottle, drinks, spits to the sky and speaks:

“Our grandparents knew these ancient rock served as a place for meditation and rest. All this ritual was carried out by fishermen with arrows who knew how to give thanks and have respect for nature, in order to ask for permission from the spiritual beings from the rivers like the sirens, the boa, the caiman and other less powerful beings, asking for harmony and strength for the wars with clans and families that live in these rivers. Kiori is the energy of the rivers. That is what my grandparents told me”.

artin Freinademetz me espera tranquilo en el lobby del Casa Andina Private Collection Miraflores, en Lima. Lo he googleado para saber un poco más de él y he encontrado decenas de videos impresionantes de un hombre joven que baja nevados interminables de Europa en snowboard, y el mismo hombre graba, para Red Bull, un video en el que se enfrenta a duelo con un famoso parapentista, en un reto que consiste en subir una montaña y luego bajarla, cada uno con su equipo a cuestas. Freinademetz no es normal. Nació hace 45 años en Austria con los esquís puestos, en una familia de aventureros, pero a los 16 años se aburrió y decidió probar el snowboard, cuando todavía era un deporte nuevo.

I have googled him to learn more about who he is and I have found dozens of impressive videos of a young man descending endless snow-peaked in Europe on his snowboard. The same man records a video for Red Bull in which he has a duel with a famous paraglider, in which they must climb a mountain and then descend it with the equipment. Freinademetz is not normal. He was born 45 years ago in Austria with the skies on, in a family of adventurers, but at 16 he got bored and decided to try snowboarding, which was a new sport at the time.

Su esposa lo sigue en muchas de sus aventuras y trabajan juntos. Han viajado a más de 50 países.

Martin es un sobreviviente y eso lo hace humilde.

“He estado primero montando en la costa en San Bartolo, donde hay un circuito de motocross bien grande en el desierto y luego volamos a Cusco e hicimos el clásico viaje de turistas. Ahí también hemos estado montando a más de 4 mil msnm donde conocimos campesinos muy amables. Luego fuimos a Machu Picchu en tren y nos pareció hermoso, así como Pisac y las salineras de Maras. Me ha fascinado la historia de los incas y el hecho de que no haya nada escrito y todo haya que adivinarlo. Veo que hay una cultura desarrollada de motocross aquí, y hay muchas posibilidades de organizar eventos y carreras.”

“First I have been riding on the coast of San Bartolo where there is a very large motocross circuit in the desert. Then we travel to Cuzco and we made the classic tourist trip. There we also rode at more than 4 thousand meters above sea level, and met very nice farmers. After that we went to Machu Picchu by train and we thought it was beautiful, as well as Pisac and the Maras Salt Mines. I am fascinated by the history of the Incas and the fact that there is nothing written and everything has to be guessed. I see there is a motocross culture that has developed here and there are many possibilities or organizing events and races”.

a provincia más grande del Perú, ubicada en el departamento de Ucayali, alberga una gran y compleja riqueza manifiesta en particularidades ecológicas, que son únicas en toda la selva amazónica, y culturales, formada por diversos pueblos indígenas entre ellos más de cinco grupos identificados como en ‘estado de aislamiento’. Es el alto Purús nombre que también designa al principal río que atraviesa este enorme y salvaje territorio.

Se llega a su capital, Puerto Esperanza, en avioneta desde Pucallpa, atravesando un infinito manto verde en el que aparecen pequeños ríos cuyos meandros crean formas y dibujos entre el tupido manto de la vegetación. Lo más característico son precisamente esos ríos, los únicos realmente amazónicos, porque no nacen en los Andes sino en los arcos montañosos de baja altitud que se encuentran en el corazón de la selva de Purús, creando enormes bolsones de biodiversidad que, a su vez, forman corredores biológicos, con Brasil y Madre de Dios. Probablemente uno de los lugares más ricos en vida silvestre del planeta.

En Purús se han registrado 520 especies de aves, 194 de mamíferos y 79 de reptiles, convirtiéndolo en un destino a descubrir para los amantes de las aves, el turismo científico y las experiencias selváticas en regiones remotas y casi intocadas.

Its capital, Puerto Esperanza, can be reached by a light aircraft from Pucallpa, crossing an endless green mantle where small meandering rivers created forms and images among the thick green forest. Rivers are precisely the most characteristic thing, the only really Amazonian, because they are not born in the Andes but in the low mountain arches located in the heart of the Purús jungle, creating enormous beds of biodiversity which form biological corridors with Brazil and Madre de Dios. It is probably one of the richest places, in terms of wildlife, in the planet.

In Purús 520 species of birds have been registered, 194 mammals and 79 reptiles, turning it into a destination waiting to be discovered for bird lovers, scientific tourists and jungle experiences in remote almost untouched regions.

Después de conocer varios países del sudeste asiático, mi mente se fijó en este destino legendario, inmenso en sus variedades, en su cultura tan rica, una de las civilizaciones más antiguas de la humanidad.

After visiting many countries of South East Asia, my mind was fixated on this legendary country, immense in its varieties, in its rich cultures, and one of the most ancient civilizations of humanity.

n largo vuelo desde Lima con escala obligada me llevó hasta Shanghái.

Fascinada con su caos, crucé abismales contrastes sociales. Mercados callejeros, calles angostas y centros comerciales imponentes con casas como Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Prada. No todo son falsificaciones en China.

La comunicación comenzaba a ser imposible. Rápidamente entendí que ellos no leen nuestros mapas y que para encontrar direcciones debía buscar información en lenguaje pinyin, el deletreo fonético del chino mandarín. Mi alojamiento, el sencillo Fish Inn Bund, queda cerca a Nanjing Lu, una calle muy comercial y transitada a pocas cuadras del modernísimo Bund de Shanghái. Caminé por Henan Lu hasta la ciudad antigua y el Jardín Yu, al templo de Confucio y a una ceremonia de té, después de perderme entre infinidad de tiendas de ropa, dulces, manualidades, arte.

long flight from Lima with an obligated stopover took me to Shanghai. Fascinated by its chaos, I crossed great social contrasts. Street markets, narrow streets and impressive commercial centers with ateliers such as Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Prada. Not everything is a copy in China.

Communicating was becoming impossible. I understood right away that they don´t read our maps, and that in order to find directions I had to look for information in pinyin language, the phonetic spelling of mandarin Chinese. My accommodation, the simple Fish Inn Bund, is close to Nanjing Lu, a very commercial and busy street, just a few blocks away from the modern Bund of Shanghai. I walked across Henan Lu until, after getting lost among an endless amount of clothing, sweets, crafts and art shops, I arrived to an old city and the Yu Garden, the temple of Confucius and a tea ceremony,

Un tren de alta velocidad recorre 1,207 kilómetros y te lleva hasta Beijing en solo cinco horas. Es recomendable comprar los boletos con anticipación y por Internet, ya que son pocas las personas dispuestas a ayudar, pues evitan el mal rato de no entender nada.

A high-speed train covers 1,207 kilometers (750 miles) and takes you to Beijing in just five hours. It is recommended to buy the tickets in advance and on the Internet, as there are only a few people willing to help as they avoid the uncomfortable situation of not understanding anything.

En la capital del norte me alojé en el Hotel Tianan, a pocas cuadras de la Ciudad Prohibida, que fue el palacio imperial de dos dinastías chinas y hoy es considerada el mayor conjunto de estructuras antiguas de madera en el mundo. Beijing te permite días de largas caminatas en espacios históricos como la Plaza Tiananmen, el Palacio de Verano, el Templo del Cielo y por supuesto la Gran Muralla China, y también perderte por los Hutongs, callejones antiguos del siglo XIII, llenos de casas de la época con baños comunitarios, que hoy son comercios locales.

In the northern capital I stayed at the Tianan Hotel, just a few blocks away from the Forbidden City, which was the imperial palace of two Chinese dynasties, and which is now considered the greatest complex of ancient wood structures in the world. Beijing also offers long walks to historic sites such as Tiananmen Square, the Summer Palace, the Temple of the Sky and of course, the Great Wall of China. It also offers the possibility of getting lost in the Hutongs, ancient alleys from the 13th Century, filled with houses with communal bathrooms that today are local stores.

El tren rápido también recorre el interior del país hasta Xi’an, una ciudad al noroeste de China. Preciosa, más pueblerina y desordenada, tiene muy cerca uno de los mausoleos más importantes hallados en el siglo XX: los Guerreros de Terracota, tumba del primer emperador Qin Shi Huang, muerto en 209 a.C. Se trata de unas 8 mil esculturas de soldados y caballos de tamaño real que fueron enterrados junto a él. Aquí se puede llegar en un tour contratado desde cualquier hotel o tomando un bus muy económico en la estación central.

The high-speed train also goes through the interior of the country until reaching Xi’an, a city in northwest China. Beautiful, with a town-like feel to it, and chaotic, it is close to one of the most important mausoleums found in the 20th Century: the Terracotta Warriors, tomb of the first emperor Qin Shi Huang, who died in the year 209 BC. Here it is possible to find 8 thousand sculptures of soldiers and horses of real size, which were buried with the emperor. One can visit this site with a tour that leaves from the hotel or by a very economic bus that departs from the central station.

Desde Xi’an las conexiones de tren no son las mejores. Para llegar hasta Guilin fue necesario un vuelo en China Eastern Airlines. Al llegar se encuentra un bus muy económico que sale cada hora hasta el centro. Desde Giulin se viaja por tierra a Yangshuo, para recorrer en balsa el río Li. Rodeado de las colinas de Karst, es uno de los lugares más bellos del planeta, con una sociedad de más de mil años de antigüedad. Aquí se conserva la tradición de la pesca con cormoranes. Los pescadores se desplazan en balsas de bambú, le atan el cuello al ave (para que no pueda tragarse a la presa) y la lanzan al agua.

Train connections from Xi’an are not the best. To arrive to Guilin it is necessary to take a flight on China Eastern Airlines. Upon arrival there is a very cheap bus that departs every hour to the center. From Giulin one travels by land to Yangzhou, and then across the Li River on a raft. Surrounded by the hills of Karst, it is one of the most beautiful places in the planet with a society that dates back more than one thousand years. Here they maintain the tradition of fishing with cormorants. Fishermen use rafts to go through the river, and tie the bird’s neck (that way it can´t swallow the prey) and throw it into the water.

En China la gente fuma en cualquier lugar. También escupen en todos lados y los niños, en vez de pañal, usan pantalones con aberturas para poder hacer caca donde les plazca. Esto puede resultar impactante. Se pueden tener experiencias horribles con la comida, como también disfrutar un delicioso pato pekinés en Beijing o un arroz frito cantonés en Guangzhou.

A pesar de lo vivido en este país, aún me es difícil imaginar el cotidiano, el cómo se sentiría haber nacido ahí. Y ahora, a medio mundo de distancia, pienso en ese día a día, con su tráfico y sus mercados, sus paisajes, su música, sus sabores y olores. Así es la vida en China, tan distinta. Es la otra cara del mundo.

In China people smoke anywhere. They also spit all around, and children instead of using diapers use pants with an open hole so that they can do their business wherever they want. This can be very shocking. One can have horrible experiences with food, and then enjoy a delicious Peking duck in Beijing, or a Cantonese fried rice in Guangzhou. Despite of what I experienced in this country, I still find it difficult to imagine the daily life, or how it would´ve been to have been born there. And now, on the other side of the world, I think of that day-to-day, with its traffic and markets, its landscapes, its music, its tastes and smells. Such is life China, so different. It is the other face of the world.

Suri: el llamado de la selva

ue somos muchos y la comida no alcanza. Que nos llenamos de calorías tontas y nuestra forma de generar fuentes de proteínas –carne de res, pesca de altura– es muy contaminante o depredadora.

Que necesitamos una dieta saludable en pocos bocados. Comamos insectos, dicen voces eruditas, desde el über famoso restaurante Noma, en Copenhague, donde ofrecen hormigas, hasta el bar Le Festin Nu, en París, donde sirven snacks de grillos.

En un mundo apocalíptico se han ido a buscar las soluciones al otro lado de la tierra para descubrir que, de pronto, las tienen bajo sus narices. El otro lado del mundo bien pudo ser el Perú, un país remoto hasta para los peruanos, de pronto a la vuelta de la esquina.

Hace unos años se escuchaba en Lima, la capital de este inmenso territorio, que en la selva se comían gusanos, y los diarios invitaban a los incrédulos a visitar El Aguajal, un restaurante amazónico que entonces los tenía en peceras. Cosa curiosa: mientras más famosos se volvían, menos dispuestos estaban los comensales a probar los suris, esos rechonchos bichos con forma de desmesurada larva. El dueño del local tuvo que dejar de ofrecerlos porque espantaban a los comensales.

Ese debe ser el único producto tradicional de la selva que se ve cada vez menos en la capital gastronómica de Sudamérica. Por lo demás, la Amazonía peruana empieza a hacer habituales en el habla cotidiana palabras que antes eran de pronunciación escasa: camu camu es una fruta cuyas propiedades se conocen ahora en Japón, churos son caracoles que se sirven con tapioca en restaurantes de gran fama como ámAz, paiche es un pescado antediluviano cuya reproducción se ha doblegado en criaderos y se come hasta en Miami y charapita es un ají de carácter que hoy se encuentra con frecuencia en mercados y mesas. La selva nos invade por la boca, toda, menos los suris.

Cosa rara la que pasa en el Perú: en la selva es tradicional comerlos y en la costa son vistos con repudio. El suri en cuestión es tan inofensivo como delicioso: crudo –vivo– sabe a mantequilla; a la parrilla se intensifica su valor con leves notas ahumadas. Mientras nuestra cabeza se prepara para el fin del mundo, en que sea inevitable alimentarnos a costa suya, nos espera en el corazón de las palmas, su único alimento y la fuente incuestionable de su excéntrico sabor. Subrepticio, polémico, rastrero y delicioso.

Suri: the calling of the jungle

T

hat we are too many and there is not enough food. That we fill ourselves with dumb calories and our way of generating sources of protein –meat, deep-water fish- is too contaminating and depredating. That we need a healthy diet in just a few bites. Let’s eat insects, said some informed voices from the über famous Noma Restaurant in Copenhagen, where they serve ants, and at the bar Le Festin Un in Paris where they serve crickets as snacks.

In an apocalyptical world, solutions have been sought all around the world to discover that suddenly, they are under their noses. The other side of the world could’ve been Peru, a remote country even for Peruvians, which suddenly appeared around the corner.

Some years ago it was heard in Lima, the capital of that immense territory, that worms were eaten in the jungle, and the newspaper invited those who didn´t believe it to visit El Aguajal, an Amazonian restaurant that kept them in fish tanks. Curious fact; while they became more famous, diners wanted less and less to try the suris, those fat bugs with an excessive larva form. The owner of the restaurant had to stop offering them because they scared the public.

This must be the only traditional product of the jungle that is seen less and less in the gastronomic capital of South America. In addition, the Peruvian Amazon begins to introduce words that used to be rare to the daily language: camu camu, a fruit whose vitamin properties are known all the way to Japan, churos are snails served with tapioca in great famous restaurants such as Amaz, paiche is an antediluvian fish whose reproduction has doubled in farms, and that is eaten in Miami; and charapita is a strong chilly that can be found frequently in markets and tables. The jungle has invaded us through the mouth, all of it, except the suris.

That is a strange thing that happens in Peru; in the jungle the tradition is to eat them and in the coast they are regarded with rejection. The suri we are talking about is as inoffensive as it is delicious: raw-alive-it tastes like butter; its taste intensifies with soft smoked notes when grilled. While our head prepares for the end of the world, when inevitably we will have to eat them, the suri waits for us in the palms, its only source of nourishment and the source of its unquestionable taste. Surreptitious, polemical, squirming and delicious.

Sitka Semsch (Lima, 1967). Una de las diseñadoras de moda más importantes del país. Estudió diseño de modas en Rhode Island School of Design, Providence.

Vivió en Miami y en Nueva York, donde hizo prácticas con Michael Kors. Su ropa ha desfilado en el Perú, Colombia, Panamá, Estados Unidos y Rusia, siendo la única diseñadora latinoamericana presente en el Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Russia. Ha ganado el premio New Star in Fashion (2003) en el Miami Fashion Week. Está casada y tiene una hija. www.sitkasemsch.com

Sitka es el nombre de una isla en Alaska. Mi papá, viajero y aventurero, vivió 10 años allá. Conoció a mi mami en Hawaii con quien se casó a los dos meses, y ambos se fueron a vivir a Alaska. Pescaban cangrejos y tenían bolicheras. Todos mis hermanos tienen nombres de islas, montañas y de osos de la zona. Y Semsch es apellido austriaco de cuarta generación.

Sitka is the name of an island in Alaska. My dad, traveler and adventurer, live 10 years there. She met my mum in Hawaii and she married her after two months, and they both went to live to Alaska. They fished crabs and had a fishing boat. All my siblings are named after islands, mountains and bears from the area. And Semsch is a fourth generation Austrian surname.

Mi padre, con sus 78 años, es un tipo feliz. Vive en un velero anclado en la marina de Key Biscayne. Se levanta con los delfines al lado, alza el ancla y se va a navegar. Entendí que mi padre es alguien consecuente, como persona necesita sentir que no echa raíces sino que tiene el ancla lista para emocionalmente saber que puede irse en cualquier momento.

My father, with his 78 years, is a happy man. He lives in a sailboat anchored in the Key Biscayne marina. He wakes up next to dolphins, he raises anchor and goes sailing. I understood that my father is someone who is consequent, as a person he needs to feel he has no roots, but rather that his anchor is ready to know emotionally that he can leave whenever he wants.

Me habré mudado más de 20 veces, 15 solo en Lima. De chiquita mi papá nos pintaba las mudanzas como algo cargado de ilusión. Nos decía, ‘mira, es un nuevo comenzar, mira qué lindo, vas a ver la vida desde otra nueva ventana’. Y así lo tomé. Cada año nos mudábamos, dormíamos en camas comodoy, de esas que se abren, se cierran y se guardan rápido porque sabíamos que no íbamos a durar mucho. Teníamos todo listo y embalado en cajas de madera, esperando la siguiente mudanza.

I must have moved 20 times, 15 only in Lima. When I was little my dad would picture moving like something charged with illusion. He would tell us, “look, it is a new beginning, see how beautiful it is, you will see life from another window”. And I took it that way. Each year we would move, sleep on Comodoy beds, those beds that open, close and are stored easily, because we knew we weren´t staying for long. We had everything ready and packed in Wood boxes, waiting for the next time we would move.

Mi último viaje ha sido acá cerca, entre Lunahuaná y Laraos, visitando a unas familias de tejedoras. Qué bárbaro, qué tales sitios. Ha sido un viaje que más que llegar a un destino, la experiencia de viajar en sí mismo.

My last trip has been close from here, between Lunahuana and Laraos, visiting some families of weavers. Its impressive, what places. It has been more about the experience of traveling than just reaching a destination.

Prefiero el mar para viajar, después la tierra y por el último volar. Una vez salimos de las islas Galápagos y llegamos a Lima tras 12 horas de navegación. El mar es apertura, espacio, libertad.

I prefer traveling by sea, after that land and finally by air. One we departed from the Galapagos Islands and we arrived to Lima after 12 hours navigating. The ocean is openness, space, and freedom.

Cuando viajo lo primero que observo es el vestuario. En hombres, mujeres y niños. Y me gusta saber las razones que hay detrás, por qué se ponen un pañuelo en la cabeza, por qué usan un color, cómo es su pijama…

The first thing I do when I travel is observing the clothes. In men, women and children. And I like to learn the reasons behind, why are they using a scarf on their heads, why do they use a particular color, how are their pajamas…

Mi viaje más extravagante creo que ha sido ir en tren de Moscú a San Petersburgo. Me pareció muy especial, sus vagones, la gente, la nieve, los paisajes. Visualmente todo me pareció impactante. Además, no sabía si estaba viviendo en el pasado o en el presente.

My most extravagant trip has been going by train from Moscow to San Petersburg. I thought it was very special, its wagons, the people, the snow, the landscapes. Visually everything was impressive. Also, I didn´t know if I was living in the past or in the presence.

A los 8 años supe que quería ser diseñadora de modas. Mis padres eran dueños del restaurante La Rosa Náutica, lo mamé de chiquita, trabajaba en la cocina pero no me gustaba y de alguna forma estaba la posibilidad de si seguía o no con el negocio familiar. Un día con 14 años, lo dije mientras cenábamos toda la familia. ‘No cuentes conmigo papá, la comida y el restaurante no me gustan. Quiero ser diseñadora de modas’.

Y así fue. Me entendieron y apoyaron siempre.

Si no hubiese sido diseñadora me hubiera encantado ser bailarina de la orquesta de Joselito.

Amo bailar, de la manera que sea, pero bailar.

At 8, I knew I wanted to be a fashion designer. My parents owned the restaurant La Rosa Nautica. I loved it as I little girl, I would work in the kitchen but I didn´t like it and in some way there was the possibility of continuing the family business.

One day when I was 14, while we were having dinner with the family I said. “Dad, don’t count with me, I don´t like the restaurant business. I want to be a fashion designer”. That is how it was. They understood and supported me always.

If I did become a designer I would´ve loved being a dancer in the Joselito band. I love dancing; anyway I can, but dance.

Ha llegado el momento de sentir profundamente que quiero hacer algo diferente, necesito un sentido de transcendencia, sentir que mi vida deja un impacto en un tercero. Durante ocho años busqué ser madre y lo logré, viviendo una experiencia lindísima con mi hija. Ahora quiero que las cosas que yo haga tengan un sentido más, que sean un grano de arena que aportan algo positivo al Perú.

The time has come to feel deeply that I want to do something different, I need a sense of transcendence, to feel that my life has an impact on someone else. For eight years I tried to become a mother and I did, living a beautiful experience with my daughter. Now I want the things I do to have more sense, that they are a grain of sand that give something positive to my country.

Amo la vida. Toda mi vida he trabajado apasionadamente, me encanta lo que hago, me fascina. Me gusta estar con gente, pero que sume, eso sí.

Soy muy tímida y la gente más cercana lo sabe. El tumulto me apabulla y me pongo nerviosa fácil. Prefiero los grupos pequeños y el tú a tú, ahí saco sonrisas.

I love life. All my life I have worked passionately, I love what I do, and it fascinates me. I like being with people, but who add something, always. I am very shy and those close to me know that. I am overwhelmed by turmoil and I get nervous easily. I prefer small groups and close interaction, that’s when I get smiles.

Mi hilo de conductor es el Perú. Hay tanta riqueza acá que, aunque es válido, para qué mirar a otro lado. Al final compites en el mundo con tu propia voz y por eso es mejor crear un discurso propio.

My common thread is Peru. There is so my richness here that, even though it is valid, why look somewhere else. In the end you compete in the world with your own voice and that is why it is better to create your own discourse.

Ten experiencias y conoce gente. Sé libre para saber qué te gusta hacer en la vida, para conocerte en lo que vas haciendo. No hay nada más maravilloso que hacer lo que realmente es lo tuyo, lo que te gusta.

Have experiences and meet people. Be free to learn what you like to do in life, to learn about yourself through your work. There is nothing more wonderful to do than what really belongs to you, what you like.

Creo que la ropa y el mundo de los tejidos serán la próxima revolución, tras la gastronómica, en el Perú. Para eso tenemos que buscar la eficiencia comercial en las marcas y artistas peruanos, y tener un carácter y un lenguaje propios, dar personalidad a la ropa que hacemos.

I think clothes and the world of textiles will be the next revolution, after gastronomy in Peru. For that we have to seek commercial efficiency in our brands and Peruvian artists, and have our own character and language, give personality to the clothes we create.

Es muy fácil viajar conmigo. Estoy feliz donde sea. Me da igual si en un hotel o en otro. En una carro o en otro. No pido nada, no exijo nada.

Fue un importante centro Chimú a partir del siglo IX DC hasta su conquista por los incas hacia 1470.

Located in Huanchaco, in the Moche Valley, 15 kilometers (9.3 miles) away from Trujillo in the department of La Libertad. Al otro día un sendero en tierra firme nos invita a adentrarnos en el bosque donde los árboles nos muestran de cerca a sus diminutos habitantes. La ventaja de la temporada seca es que se pueden realizar excursiones a pie por los senderos de la selva y observar de cerca los cientos de insectos que viven en sus árboles, desde una hormiga cortadora de hojas y un milpiés, hasta coloridas mariposas y escarabajos de oro.

En la época de lluvias, que va de diciembre a mayo, los senderos y caminos ya no se transitan sino que se navegan, en …ocasiones, si la inundación viene fuerte, llega incluso a la altura... de algunas copas de los árboles. Los ríos y los lagos se vuelven más caudalosos y la selva nos ofrece una experiencia diferente.

The next day, a firm path invites us to go deep into the forest where trees show us up close their minute inhabitants. The advantages of the dry season is that it is possible to go on walks through the jungle and watch the hundreds of insects that live in the trees, from leafcutter ants to millipedes, to colorful butterflies to golden beetles.

During the rainy season, which occurs from December to May, the paths and trails cannot be walked and have to be navigated. Sometimes, if the floods are heavy, the water can reach the tree canopies. The rivers and lakes rise and the jungle offers us a different experience.

By night the spectacle doesn´t end. By the time the sun comes down the forest becomes the territory of the caimans, amphibians and owls. With a flashlight on my hand, it is time to go looking for minute species of colorful frogs, and listen to the magical sounds that the forest offers and then, rest deeply on the Amazon River.

l INKAFEST es el Festival Internacional de Cine de Montaña que este año celebra su edición número 11. El encuentro que agrupa a los apasionados de la naturaleza, la aventura, las montañas y el arte extremo. La fiesta donde se exhiben las mejores producciones de deporte y naturaleza del mundo, varias de ellas estrenos a nivel mundial. Es el caso del documental “La naciente más larga del río Amazonas” de National Geographic, sobre la expedición de 111 días en la que se muestra que la vertiente más larga de este gran río se encuentra en el departamento de Cerro de Pasco.

isitar petroglifos es un peregrinaje. Muchas veces, para poder llegar a verlos, hay que recorrer grandes distancias en desiertos, valles, mesetas, junglas inhóspitas, o subir a pie por los senderos ásperos y polvorientos de algún cerro desconocido. También hay que ser pacientes para apreciarlos: saber esperar a que el sol, según la hora del día, incida sobre las superficies de las piedras y, así, los petroglifos se tornen más visibles, más hermosos. Es una aventura de ida y vuelta en nuestro pasado: después de esta experiencia, uno ya no vuelve a ser el mismo.

Many times in order to find them one must cover great distances of coastal desserts, plains, plateaus, inhospitable jungles, or even hike along the rough and dusty paths of an unknown mountain. One must also be patient in order to appreciate them: learn to wait for the sun, which according to the time of the day, falls on the rocks and thus, the petroglyphs become more visible, more beautiful. It is a two-way adventure into our past: after this experience one is never the same again.

En el Perú ancestral a los petroglifos, o grabados en piedra, se les llamaba quilcas, palabra quechua que significa escritura. De allí que existieran, según los cronistas, los llamados quilca camayoc, aquellos elegidos para hacer e interpretar los petroglifos. La variedad de grabados es extensa y enigmática: figuras humanas (rostros, cabezas, siluetas), animales en movimiento (cuadrúpedos, felinos, aves, arañas, serpientes, grillos), geométricas (círculos, cruces, puntos, cuadrados, espirales), estelares o sobrenaturales (estrellas, soles radiantes, lunas, cometas, seres alados con cabeza humana), y muchos otros grabados difíciles de interpretar.

In ancient Peru petroglyphs or rock carvings where called quilcas, a Quechua word that means script. According to chroniclers that is why there were the so-called quilca camayoc, those chosen to make and interpret petroglyphs. The variety of carvings is extensive and enigmatic: human figures (faces, heads, silhouettes), animals moving (quadrupeds, felines, birds, spiders, snakes, crickets), geometric (circles, crosses, points, squares, spirals), stellar or supernatural (stars, radiant suns, moons, comets, winged species with human heads), and many other difficult to interpret.

Su edad es incierta, aunque pueden abarcar muchos siglos de historia, y su localización, por lo general, es alejada y remota.

According to some specialists, petroglyphs could be the register of pre-historic legends or myths or be associated with an ancient cult to water, sacred crops, or to salt production. It is also possible that they were signs on pilgrimage roads, or marks of sacred landscapes. Their age is uncertain, even though they can cover many centuries, and generally, they are located in far away and remote areas.

Lo que una imagen representa y lo que significa son dos cosas distintas.

Dos líneas de igual tamaño que se cruzan, por ejemplo, representan un aspa o una cruz; pero su significado real puede ser entendido sólo por el que hizo el petroglifo. (Acaso una cruz podría haber significado la intercepción de dos caminos o el brillo de algún metal o la forma de alguna constelación del cielo).

What an image represents and its significance are two different things. Two lines of the same size that cross each other for example, represent a cross; but maybe only the person who created the petroglyph could understand its real significance. A cross could have represented the intersection of two roads or the reflection of a metal, or some constellation in the sky.

At present, only a few researches persevere in the study and preservation of petroglyphs. Such is the case of a group or archaeologist of the Universidad Mayor de San Marcos, who have found indication of a possible system of writing with more than 5 thousand years in the Petroglyphs of Checta*. If this hypothesis is confirmed, the study of archaeology in Peru will change radically. The archaeological area of Checta (Canta, Lima) has an extension of 23 hectares and is located in the valley of the Chillon River. Humans have continuously occupied the area for more than 10 thousand years. Here, there are more than 100 petroglyphs, discovered in 1925 by Priest Pedro Villar Córdova, in an area considered Patrimony of the Nation since 2005. However, Checta is a vulnerable and threatened

Este es el caso de un grupo de arqueólogos de la Universidad Nacional Mayor San Marcos quienes han encontrado indicios de una posible escritura con 5 mil años de antigüedad en los Petroglifos de Checta. De comprobarse esta hipótesis, el estudio de la arqueología en el Perú cambiaría en forma radical. Peru is located among the first 15 countries with the most cave paintings in the world. According to the last inventory of National Cave Paintings (Hostnig, 2003), are country registers some 400 locations with petroglyphs, being the department of Arequipa the one with the most.

El Perú se ubica entre los primeros 15 países con mayor riqueza rupestre en el mundo. De acuerdo al último Inventario Nacional de Arte Rupestre (Hostnig, 2003), nuestro país registra unos 400 sitios con petroglifos, siendo el departamento de Arequipa el que agrupa la mayor cantidad.

Lamentablemente, muchos de estos lugares han sido olvidados y ya no existen más por la expansión urbana. Otros sitios como Toro Muerto (Arequipa), Alto de las Guitarras (La Libertad), Pocós (Ancash), Antapucro (Lima), son patrimonio vulnerable, condenado a desaparecer por la acción (u omisión) del hombre. Resulta paradójico que ciertos lugares arqueológicos no tengan condiciones mínimas de seguridad, información y servicios, y sean a la vez Patrimonio Cultural de la Nación. Por otro lado, existen algunos ejemplos alentadores de preservación, como los Petroglifos de Miculla (Pachia, Tacna), que se encuentran en buen estado de conservación y poseen un centro de interpretación, circuitos señalizados y servicios para el visitante.

Unfortunately, many of these sites have been neglected and some don´t exist anymore due to urban expansion. Other sites like Toro Muerto (Arequipa), Alto las Guitarras (La Libertad), Pocós (Ancash), Antapucro (Lima) are vulnerable patrimony, condemned to disappear due to the action (or inaction) of humans. It is paradoxical that certain archaeological sites don´t have the minimum conditions for security, information and services and that at the same time, they are Cultural Patrimony of the Nation. On the other hand, there are certain examples of preservation, such as the Miculla Petroglyphs (Pachia, Tacna), in a good state of conversation and that have an interpretation center, signaled circuits and services for visitors.

Preservar los petroglifos como parte del patrimonio cultural es vital para fortalecer nuestra identidad. Los petroglifos no pueden ser considerados como vestigios de culturas desaparecidas y olvidadas en el tiempo, sino por el contrario, como expresiones y mensajes vivos de nuestros ancestros para nuestro bien y el de las futuras generaciones.

Preserving petroglyphs as part of the cultural patrimony is vital to strengthen our identity. Petroglyphs are not only considered remains of cultures that have disappeared and been forgotten in time, but on the contrary, they can be seen as living expressions and messages from our ancestors for our good, and that of future generations.

uestros abuelos llegaron buscando nuevos terrenos para cultivar y cazar. Siempre hemos sido cazadores. Matábamos manadas enteras de huanganas, monos, sachavacas o tucanes.

Llegábamos a los aguajales que están en la parte alta del río Avisado y los tumbábamos para cosechar su fruta y sacar su chonta. Talábamos madera del monte, cedros, tornillos, caobas…

Así era nuestra vida.

Muchos años después, después de que llegasen los colonos de la sierra, después de que este lugar se llenase de gente, casi terminamos con todos los animales. Ya no se podía vivir. Entonces vino un amigo ingeniero y simplemente nos dijo, Ustedes están en el paraíso. Hay que hacer algo aquí.

Así empezamos un proyecto largo de ecoturismo. Aprendimos a guiar, a cocinar, a entender el mundo de los hoteles, construimos un lodge en la mitad de la selva y varias cabañas en las copas de los árboles. Ahora ya no matamos animales, los observamos. Ahora ya no envenenamos nuestros ríos con huaca o barbasco, los cuidamos. Ahora ya no cortamos nuestros árboles, los sembramos para que la selva no muera nunca. Caminamos por nuestros bosques expulsando a cazadores y depredadores. Porque nuestra tierra es un paraíso.

ur grandparents arrived seeking new land to cultivate and hunt. We have always been hunters. We would kill herds of huanganas, monkeys, sachavacas or tucans. We would go to the Mauritia Palm Swamps located in the upper part of the Avisado River, and we would bring them down to pick their fruits and collect their chonta (palm heart). We would cut wood from the forest, cedar, tornillos, mahogany…that was our life.

Many years later, after the colonizers arrived from the Andes, after this place was filled with people, we have almost finished with all animals. It wasn’t possible to live here. Then an engineer friend came and simply told us, “You are in paradise. We have to do something here”.

Thus, we started a long ecotourism venture. We learned to guide, cook, understand the world of hotels; we built a lodge in the middle of the jungle and many cabins on the tree canopies. Now, we don´t hunt animals anymore, we watch them. Now we don´t poison our rivers with huaca or barbasco, we take care of them. Now we don´t cut down our trees, we plant them so that the jungle never dies.

We walk through our forests throwing out hunters and predators. Because our land is heaven.

Estudió derecho en Lima y un postgrado en relaciones internacionales en New York. Es profesor de la facultad de derecho de la Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú desde 1996 y dicta curos en la Universidad Peruana de Ciencias Aplicadas. Actualmente se desempeña como abogado socio del Estudio Rodrigo, Elías & Medrano – Abogados desde 1990 y es autor de numerosos artículos en materia laboral y del libro ‘Acoso sexual en las relaciones laborales privadas’ publicado el 2005. Apasionado de la fotografía y los viajes, ha recorrido diferentes continentes, destacando sus registros en China, Japón y Patagonia, y ha publicado dos libros sobre faros: ‘Faros de la costa peruana’ (co-autor con Jorge Ortiz Sotelo) y ‘Faros del Perú’ con el que ha registrado todos los faros existentes en el país.

He studied law in Lima and then a postgraduate degree in International Relations in New York. He is a professor of Law at the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Peru since 1996 and also teaches at the Universidad Peruana de Ciencias Aplicadas. Since 1990, he is an associate lawyer at the Rodrigo, Elías & Medrano- Abogados Firm. He is also the author of many articles about law and he has written the book “Acoso sexual en las relaciones laborales privadas” (Sexual harassment in private work relations) published in 2005. Passionate about photography and traveling, he has traveled across different continents, among which his photographs of China, Japan and Patagonia stand out, and he has published two books about “Lighthouses”: “Faros de la costa peruana” (Lighthouses of the Peruvian coast) alongside Jorge Ortiz Sotelo, and “Faros del Perú” (Lighthouses of Peru) in which he has registered every lighthouse there is in the country.

25 años de moda en el Perú

Corrían los años 90 y la moda se ponía de moda! Era el apogeo de las TOP’s models y los diseñadores. Miami se convirtió en el centro para las sesiones de foto de las grandes editoriales, y las mejores marcas producían su material publicitario allá. Súper fiestas y grandes desfiles, todo sucedía al mismo tiempo.

Mientras, en el Perú se creaba la Cámara de Diseñadores de Moda con la que realizamos el primer desfile, y se

lanzó la revista Maniquí. Una difícil época pero que aún así logramos hacer hasta dos desfiles por año, trayendo con gran esfuerzo una coreografía holandesa.

Con los años aperecieron escuelas de diseño y revistas de moda. Existía un buen grupo de modelos de gran nivel pro-

fesional y la industria textil peruana estaba en buen momento de exportación. El público empezaba a consumir productos de diseño, aunque en los primeros tiempos los diseñadores solo producían ropa hecha a medida, y vestidos de noche y de novia. Un gran evento en Lima fue el desfile con la top model del momento Claudia Schiffer, un hecho que marcó historia en el Perú. Después llegaron otros con grandes fotógrafos, buscando locaciones más allá de la capital, como Cusco.

El boom de la moda en Miami terminó con el asesinato del gran diseñador Gianni Versace. Fue como si acabara una

etapa. En el Perú bajaron las exportaciones pero empezaron a llegar marcas de renombre, y surgieron nuevos eventos relacionados con la moda hasta el LIFWEEK, el Lima Fashion Week, el encuentro más importante del país para moda peruana que se celebra en las temporadas verano / invierno. En él cada año postulan más diseñadores, también extranjeros, y cada vez más asistencia de público.

Durante el pasado mes de agosto, se llevaron a cabo varios eventos en Lima conmemorando los 25 años de moda en el

Perú. Uno de ellos, dirigido por Efraín Salas, convocó a los 19 diseñadores más importantes desde mediados de los 90 hasta hoy, a modelos como Edith Tapia, Fiorella Fare, Claudia Luque, Genoveva Freire, y una gran colección de vestidos, afiches, invitaciones, artículos de prensa y fotografías que son reflejo de esta larga y apasionante historia.

Un evento lleno de recuerdos y nostalgia, un reencuentro con amigos y personajes clave de la historia de la moda

peruana que, después de muchísimos años y rumbos diferentes, nos hemos encontrado para impulsar una empresa en la que el Perú tiene mucho que decir al mundo.

I

t was the 90s and fashion was becoming fashionable! It was the time of the TOP models and designers. Miami became the center for photo-shoots of great editorials and the best brand produced their advertising material there. Super parties and super runways, everything happening at the same time.

Meanwhile, in Peru we were creating the Chamber of Fashion Designer and which allowed us to organized the first

fashion show and launch the magazine Maniquí. A difficult time indeed, but still we were able to do up to two fashion shows

per year, bringing a Dutch choreographer with a lot of effort.

With time fashion schools and fashion magazines appeared. There was a good group of professional models and the

Peruvian textile industry was experiencing a good momento in terms of exports. The public was starting to consume design products, although at first designers were only producing tailored clothes, and night and wedding dresses. A great event in Lima was when the top model of the time, Claudia Schiffer, participated on a fashion show. This event made history in Peru.

After, other top models arrived alongside photographers, looking for locations beyond the capital, such as Cusco.

The boom of fashion in Miami ended with the murder of designer Gianni Versace. It was as in an era was ending. In Peru

exports diminished but renowned brands started arriving, and new events related to fashion began, until LIFWEEK, Lima Fashion Week, the most important event in Peruvian fashion celebrated in the summer/Winter seasons.

Each year more designers apply, both national and international, and the public is also growing.

During the past month of august, many events took place in Lima commemorating the 25 years of fashion in Peru. One

of them, directed by Efrain Salas, united the 19 most important designers since the 90s until now, models like Edith Tapia, Fiorella Fare, Claudia Luque, Genoveva Freire, and a great collection of dresses, posters, invitations, press articles and photographs that reflect this long and exciting history.

An event filled with memories and nostalgia, a reunion of friends and key characters of the history of Peruvian fashion, who

after many years and different routes, have reunited to propel an industry in which Peru has still much to say to the world.
