Letter from the Editors'

ENDLESS SUMMER 2021

hen we wrote last, we were in the early days of Winter 2020 and had no idea what crazy events the remainder of the year would bring. So much has happened since then, and in many ways we have more questions now that travel is reopening than ever. Our first hope is that you and your family are safe and healthy. Our focus and the thing we've done every day for almost 10 years now, is to tell stories that inspire travel. This past year has been eye-opening to say the least on just how this industry we all love so much can be taken away from us at the drop of a dime. We can no longer take it for granted or let travel go unappreciated. Travel is a gift and we feel so lucky each and every day that we get to connect with our readers over the one thing that brings us so much joy. As travel slowly resumes we wake up each day more committed than ever to the future of travel and look forward to working with you our readers to do everything we can to bring the industry back stronger than ever. This seasons’ cover features actor, author and motivational speaker Justin Baldoni and his gorgeous, kind hearted wife Emily. The pair recently moved to Ojai to escape city life and bring nature's balance to their two children and we couldn't applaud them more. During our downtime in 2020 when TikTok hit the scene and we had little to do but scroll we came across Justin's account and started following along. We were captured by the lessons he would teach his children and the easygoing vibes him and his wife displayed. It was easy to see their souls were made of good and after reflecting through a year of turmoil we knew we wanted our cover to radiate positive energy. We had a blast capturing these two on their beautiful new property in Ojai, the shoot was as easygoing as their personalities and the sun was in full force. We are so excited to announce that events are back. We look forward to celebrating with all of our Southern California fans at our upcoming events taking place in SoCal this year. Make sure to follow us on all our social media channels to receive all updated information on these exciting experiences, this will be a year like no other as we have some serious making up to do! We wish you all the best for the rest of the year as it becomes more and more safe and adventurous for all.

LA Michelin-Starred Chef, John Fraser, re-opens Ardor at the West Hollywood EDITION Photograph by: Nikolas Koenig & Ardor at The West Hollywood EDITION Recognized as one of the best vegetable-forward chefs in the world, Michelin-starred chef and restaurateur, John Fraser, re-opens Ardor at The West Hollywood EDITION. A California-native who refined his expertise under the mentorship of Thomas Keller at The French Laundry, Fraser perfected his technique at lauded Paris establishments including Taillevent and Maison Blanche, before becoming executive chef at Compass where he was awarded two stars by The New York Times. Focusing on the essence of food, Fraser approaches each dish at Ardor simply, using produce sourced hyper-locally through partnerships with farmers. As with all John Fraser Restaurants, including Michelin-starred NIX and The Terrace & Outdoor Gardens at The Times Square EDITION, Fraser and his team craft their offering with a distinct focus on the vegetable components. Redefining the way that plant-based ingredients are used in American cuisine, Ardor presents a menu where dishes are created at the source of their inspiration in California. Using techniques from around the world, Ardor, which means passion and exuberance, reflects Fraser’s heritage and culinary journey and is brought to life by an all-female team of line cooks. Tandoor Carrots, for example, sees Californian table carrots cured for 24 hours, in a mix of sugar and salt, before they are steamed and finally roasted. Served on a bed of NIX hummus with a smoked paprika vinaigrette, the dish includes fried eggplant and is finished with parsley, mint and dill. The Arugula Farro Risotto begins with farro cooked in vegetable stock which is finished with a kombu parmesan broth. The dish features onion, leek, garlic, shallots, spinach and arugula which are pureed, giving a vibrant green appearance. Served with an arugula, radicchio and frisee salad with white balsamic vinaigrette and lemon zest, Ardor’s risotto is completed with a parmesan and calabrian chili vinaigrette. Divided into five sections - crudo, appetizers, entrees, charcoal grill and more vegetables - Ardor’s menu sees the following cult favorites return: Milk Bread - beefsteak tomatoes, olive oil, red wine vinegar, Maldon salt Raw Cauliflower Cacio e Pepe - ancient grains, fava beans, haricot verts Sweet Potato Curry - puffed rice, lily bulb, jackfruit Highlights from the dessert menu include Terrarium, which is created with sugar blown like glass into a sphere. The globe is shattered to reveal edible flowers, dill, vanilla-honey gelatin and bergamot, served over orange gelato which is surrounded by a cloud of spun sugar. Inspired by Pride, Rainbow Sherbet, presents a colorful creation where a raspberry, orange and tarragon sherbet is served on an olive oil cake and completed with a towering raspberry sugar tuile.

Courtesy of Ardor at The West Hollywood EDITION

Developed by Beverage Director Amy Racine, Ardor’s cocktail offering mirrors the kitchen’s focus on fresh ingredients. For example, Clear sees a lightly pickled Piopinno mushroom presented in a clean, fresh martini which is sprinkled with koji to bring out the umami and purity of the ingredient, without over-layering. Emphasizing mezcals and tequilas the cocktails at Ardor are seemingly simple and rely on the spectrum of colors as inspiration, defying the pompous noise of current cocktail culture:

Yellow - reposado Tequila, pineapple, chili, egg white, turmeric Pink - blanco Tequila, Campari, tarragon, pamplemousse Umber - rye, Bacardi 8, amaro vermouth Ardor’s re-opening sees a new wine list, geared towards large format, healthy farming practice wineries. Emphasizing that safe farming techniques are both healthier to drink and better for their surrounding communities, the list includes a selection of natural and biodynamic wines. With several by-the-glass wines poured from magnums, the curated bottles pair well with the light, vegetable-centric dishes on the menu. Nestled in a green oasis, Ardor’s setting reflects a connection with the outdoors. The restaurant’s interior features timber screens, ceiling beams and electric chartreuse accents, seating up to 92 table-style and 15 at the bar. With seating for up to 46, Ardor’s terrace is a greenery-filled garden built for al fresco dining in the finest traditions of Napa, transporting guests from the hustle and bustle of Sunset Boulevard to an idyllic respite. Located on the corner of Sunset Boulevard and North Doheny Drive, where West Hollywood meets Beverly Hills, Fraser offers three distinct dining experiences at The West Hollywood EDITION, with indoor and outdoor spaces all under one roof. The signature restaurant, Ardor, boasts vegetable forward, modern Californian cuisine, whilst The Roof offers Southern California Mexican dishes against a panoramic backdrop of Los Angeles. Finally, the dramatic three-story Lobby Bar, which will re-open this summer, offers an all-day menu with bespoke cocktails. Ardor at The West Hollywood EDITION re-opens with dinner service only, Wednesday until Saturday, and will expand its operation times in due course.

Feel the Heat: Descanso Restaurant’s Newly Reopened Plancha Room is Fueling the Fire Photography Courtesy of Descanso Restaurant As restaurants in SoCal begin to open for inside dining it can feel like a chore to decide where to enjoy your first meal out of quarantine. When looking to bring the gang back together we can promise a fun night out when you score a coveted seat in this sizzling hot Hibachi establishment. One of the newest reopening's to the Orange County dining scene Descanso has been making quite the mark in its short time since inception. Concept creator Rob Arellano came up with this unique idea of bringing the authenticity of a streetside taco cart into a sit-down restaurant and the reviews have been stellar. Think Benihana meets authentic Mexican food and you have Descanso; from the moment you walk in the door the vibe is full of energy. Patrons enjoying handcrafted cocktails at the bar and plancha grills serving hungry guests waiting to try the tantalizing menu items before them. A modern taqueria, Descanso celebrates authentic Mexican flavors while drawing guests into the cooking experience with the chef. Sip on signature cocktails as Mexican classics are made to order and served hot in a lively setting that brings in the music, smells, and energy of a busy Mexican town. The staff is warm and welcoming, and within minutes you feel as if you are part of the family. Shortly after you are seated you can’t help but notice what others are sipping on around you. A variety of delicious concoctions are available and you can’t go wrong from the Mi Corazón comprised of Villa One Silver Tequila, Agave, Blood Orange, Pomegranate, Passionfruit and Lemon to the El Jefe which includes Makers Mark Bourbon, Amaro Liqueur, Aperol Liqueur and Lime. The plancha menu showcases the freshest of ingredients from the mouthwatering Carne Asada to Chile Rellenos. Each entree is accompanied by your choice of soup or salad and Mexican Fried Rice. With the perfect mixture of old meets new melding traditional Mexican cuisine with a modern twist the regular menu is filled with savory items making it hard to choose. Whether you opt to sit at a plancha grill with others for a lively dining experience or a quiet table for two, you are guaranteed a meal you won’t soon forget.

How many of us have always dreamed of packing up our vehicle and driving across the country? As one can imagine if you have a pulse you would be on this list due to the life-changing experience that comes from this kind of cross-country journey. Coast to coast and back again, each time taking a different route; it is beyond all imagination the number of iconic cities, historical landmarks, national parks and let’s not forget the mouth-watering food that you will find at each and every stop along the way. Even though a trip of this magnitude demands quite a bit of time, planning and freedom from your daily work schedule it can and absolutely will change the way you look at travel for the rest of your life. Due to the recent pandemic, this trip (which was always on our radar for the distant future) became an instant reality and simply could not be passed up. Our first priority was to find the perfect vehicle for this type of trip that checked every box from what we needed to be on the road for roughly a month. After doing some research and conferring with friends who had done the trip before us we decided to go with an ever so spacious campervan from Travellers Autobarn in Los Angeles. The Hitop

Campervan that we chose came fully equipped with a full kitchenette-fridge, gas cooker, microwave, and sink. Exactly what the doctor ordered, we loaded up the van with everything one could need for this type of trip and were on the road to our first destination, Las Vegas, Nevada!

For the ultimate Las Vegas stopover check out these highlights to guarantee a trip to remember!

The Seychelles, an Exotic Island Escape Photography Courtesy of Six Senses Resorts

here are few precious gems left in the world of tourism these days thanks to their exotic location which help to keep them relatively unknown. The Seychelles is one of those destinations. Ask ten people if they know where the Seychelles is and you can almost guarantee nine of the ten have no idea. Extending between four and ten degrees south of the equator and lying between 480km and 1,600km from the coast of East Africa the Seychelles is one of the world's last frontiers that promise awe-inspiring natural beauty in pristine surroundings without the obvious footprint of mankind. One of the smallest countries in the world the Seychelles is comprised of two main island groups the Mahé group of more than forty central mountainous granitic islands and its second group of more than seventy 42

Mahé is home to 90% of the countries population and is where the majority of resorts can be found due to its international airport and beautiful surrounding areas. Although host to a long list of premier resorts and hotel chains the island of Mahé is just the tip of the iceberg. If you want a true taste of the Seychelle's untouched primitive beauty a short trip to the island of Félicité is just what the doctor ordered. This heavily forested granitic island measuring only 2.68 kilometers long and situated 4 kilometers east of La Dique is home to one of the top resorts, Six Senses Zil Payson. An incredible 4,740 square feet of space The Signature twobedroom pool villa, perched on one of the island's granite cliffs offers mind-blowing views that truly are a sight for sore eyes. Seascape the resort's three-bedroom residence and The Sanctuary the fourbedroom residence are both built into the granite rock of the island each offering oneof-a-kind designs. Intoxicating panoramic views, ultra-luxe modern architecture, and upper floor plunge pools that are fully visible on the floor below make these residences stand in a league of their own. Travelers around the world have been seeking out nearby adventures but sometimes local just does not cut it; the yearning to jump on a plane and fly overseas grows with each passing day. It has been almost a year of waiting for borders to open and we are happy to announce that travel is starting to come back slowly in most countries around the world. Today is your lucky day, as we unleash a secret escape that has easily been well worth the wait. Last year, right before the pandemic began, we escaped to Indonesia and discovered a luxury yacht that honestly changed the way we look at travel. Created by the founders of the world-famous Ibiza-based Atzaro Hotel Group, Prana by Atzaro, the world’s largest and most luxurious Phinisi (Indonesian crafted sailboat), offers its guests a once-in-a-lifetime sailing experience traversing across some of the most pristine, uninhabited waters in the world. From the moment you step onto this hand-crafted beauty you immediately feel the excitement set in. Kick-off your shoes, take a deep breath and inhale the eucalyptus-scented towel that is given to you upon boarding, sink into one of the plush daybeds on deck and get ready to embark on the journey of a lifetime. The warm, caring staff are attentive to your every desire as you sip a freshly squeezed juice. While they put your mind at ease with an itinerary fit for royalty, introductions are made to the 18 man crew as everyone is welcomed. The crew members consist of a cruise director, dive instructors, stewards, a culinary team, and several spa therapists. Oversized gangways and four spacious decks with king-size daybeds offer abundant places to retreat and relax. A yoga deck doubles as an open-air cinema and Prana by Atzaro’s main deck has inside and outside living, a spa, a water sports deck and a further suite. After a

quick briefing and a tour of the 180-foot beauty, you are shown to one of the nine luxurious suites where you will lay your head for the duration of your trip. With sails set and bags unpacked you make your way to the upper deck to start this incredulous journey of a lifetime. Welcome cocktails and light bites are served as you sit back and let the wind flow freely through your hair, it is now time to let go, and just like that, every cell in your body is at full relaxation. A pre-dinner rest seems like the best of ideas after enjoying the picture-perfect horizon. Head down to your airconditioned sanctuary and fade away into dreamland; there is no judgment here. Mealtime is an absolute treat aboard Prana by Atzaro, as local Indonesian chefs create some of the most spectacular spreads you will ever lay eyes on, the freshest of ingredients formulated into works of art each time you gather. Visit the Wineries First Stop: Melville Winery Located in the heart of the Sta. Rita Hills, Melville Winery is one of Lompoc’s top destinations. When Ron Melville and his sons decided to set up shop in the valley it was with great discernment that the location they chose was prime for growing cool-climate varietals. The land chosen is only ten miles from the ocean and provides consistent morning and evening fog along with steady afternoon winds. Additionally, the ground was a combination of calcareous rock and sand which of course is perfectly suited for growing Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Syrah grapes. The rest is history and today over 23 years later Melville Winery is competing as one of Santa Barbara County’s top producers with 120 acres of award-

winning varietals consisting of 17 clones of Pinot Noir, 8 clones of Syrah, and 8 clones of Chardonnay. Beyond producing some of the county’s best wines the Melville family has created a warm and welcoming atmosphere that brings locals and tourists alike to visit the property for a day of family fun. During the cooler seasons, the grounds are perfectly decorated with bails of hail as well as a smattering of pumpkins, gourds, and squash. Second Stop: Beckmen Winery The Beckmen family only knows how to deliver the best product, from keyboards and synthesizers to award-winning wines, they are born leaders. After years of pioneering the electronic music business Tom and Judy Beckmen along with their two sons, Steve and Jeff are now producing some of the best wines in the county. Since their inception in 1994, their world-class wines have been served throughout the finest restaurants and homes across the country with the ultimate highlight being enjoyed at the highest level, the White House. Their 150 acres of exceptional varietals are spread between their two vineyards, the Thomas and Judith Beckmen Estate Vineyard in Los Olivos and the Purisima Mountain Vineyard in Ballard Canyon. Since 1994 the Beckmens have been tending to both plots of land with one thought in mind, how to produce the best

possible grape varietals in all of Santa Barbara County. Analyzing the unique soils and microclimates of each vineyard they have ensured the highest quality fruit possible and the proof is in the finished product. With peaks reaching 1150 feet and multiple exposures, the Purisima Mountain Vineyard is home to their white wine production which includes Sauvignon Blanc, Grenache Blanc, Viognier, and Chardonnay as well as Syrah, Grenache, Mourvedre, and Counoise. The Thomas and Judith Beckmen Estate is primarily planted to yield their Cabernet Sauvignon with small amounts of Grenache, Mourvedre as well as Syrah. With the recent pandemic, the Beckmens have gone above and beyond to keep their wine club members and guests of the winery as safe as possible. With zoom tastings where wines are delivered to your home and an outdoor tasting area that covers extra safety precautions, you will be more than happy during a winery visit. One of the highlights of the outdoor tasting experience is that each guest receives their tastings in a Covid Friendly Wine Kit that includes your take-home wine glasses, bottles of water, breadsticks, anti-bacterial sanitizer, and a description of each wine that is offered that day. Third Stop: Pence Winery Pence Winery is built on a special storied past of how Blair Pence, originally a real estate developer in Los Angeles turned his love for wine into arguably Santa Barbara County’s most VIP winery. Blair derived his passion for world-class wines from his many

travels to Europe where he was exposed to award-winning varietals from Bordeaux and Burgundy in France. What at first began as a healthy obsession of collecting the world’s finest wines for his home in America eventually lead to where he and his family are now, leading wine moguls in Santa Barbara County. The acquisition of his land that is now home to the Pence Winery was originally purchased by him as a ranch to raise a few horses and possibly some cattle. Throughout the purchase of his four ranches in the area one of them turned out to be an outstanding location to grow grapes which opened Pandora’s Box. Pence being an educated businessman knew the key to success was to hire and consult with the best viticulturists in the Santa Barbara area and the rest is history. Today the Pence Winery that is set on 200 acres of land is a relatively tiny artisanal winery that produces exceptional wines all organically farmed. The cool, coastal climate of the area is an ideal environment for producing high-quality Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Syrah. The unique variety of soils and microclimates are what Pence says contribute to his awardwinning wines and he is a strong believer that the lay of the land tells the story of the finished product. When you book a tour of the property make sure to ask for a “tasting on the dock” which is one of the highlights of the estate. Kick up your feet and let one of Pence’s wine experts bring you a flight of their finest varietals while you take in nature at its finest!

End the Weekend with a Romantic Dining Experience Arguably Santa Barbara’s finest dining establishment, Toma has been delivering the freshest of ingredients along with impeccable service since its inception in 2013. Located only a short 10-minute walk from Hotel Californian this waterfront classic has been the talk of the town over the years thanks to the passion and love for fine cuisine brought by husband-and-wife team, Tom and Vicki Dolan. With a combined 70 years in culinary arts guests could not be in better hands when they pull up a seat at their old-world historic building on West Cabrillo Boulevard. The menu is a perfected medley of fresh seafood, locally sourced meats, organically grown vegetables all paired with a world-class wine list. It truly is hard to go wrong with anything on the menu. A large part of the overwhelming success that Toma has received over the years is because Tom and Vicki have chosen their team of chefs based on their vision for excellence. Executive Chef Charles de L’Arbe the current master at the helm brings a lifetime of appreciating the finer side of the foodie spectrum being mentored first by his well-traveled grandmother and later by Chef Nat Ely. Chef Charles uses his passion for sustainability working hand in hand with the local farmers to create his menu which changes season to season based on the availability of the finest local ingredients. With a menu as thought-provoking and flavorful that Chef Charles presents each day guests may find it an arduous task to select only one of many incredible creations. Kick-off your meal with their signature Tuna Cones filled with Ahi Sashimi, Ginger, Sesame, Soy, Chile, and Chives. Next opt for the Grilled Octopus with Romanesco, Fregola Pasta, Olive, Gremolata, Smoked Tomato, and Tobiko Roe. ENDLESS SUMMER 2021

When people in LA and OC think of visiting the desert, they typically think of Palm Springs. I recently visited a desert oasis that offers the same tranquility as Palm Springs, but a whole lot more. With resorts and spas galore, 4 professional sports teams, golfing, hiking, shopping, and a thriving nightlife, Scottsdale, Arizona is worth a visit. Scottsdale is an easy six-hour drive from SoCal or a quick 1-hour flight. If you are a golf fan, this is the place for you. Every January Phoenix hosts the Phoenix Open Golf Classic that brings people from all over the world. Besides watching some of your favorite golf professionals on the course, the parties are incredible. Another popular event in January is the Barrett-Jackson car auction. This is the world’s largest collector car auction of its kind. Let’s not forget about baseball’s Spring Training which takes place here every year between late February and continues through the end of March. Phoenix is home to a professional football, baseball, basketball, and hockey team, so you will never have a shortage of things to do while visiting. If you are an adventurous type like me, you might enjoy an afternoon hike up Camelback Mountain. The cactus, flowers and stunning views are unlike anything you have seen before. Another top pick is the Phoenix Zoo. The zoo is one of the largest non-profit zoos in the United States. It was opened November 21, 1962, by Nancy Maytag who was married to Robert E. Maytag, grandson to the founder of Maytag Appliance Company. The zoo was named the Maytag Zoo originally, but in 1963 it officially became the Phoenix Zoo. It has 125 acres of desert landscape and 2.5 miles of walking paths. There are more than three thousand animals on exhibit including mammals, fish, invertebrates, birds and reptiles. I particularly enjoyed seeing the baboons with all their colorful fur. It doesn’t even look real. I thought perhaps they had dyed the fur for entertainment purposes, but that is how they are born. If you are interested in art, be sure to head to Old Town Scottsdale for an afternoon of gallery cruising. They even offer a bike gallery and pub crawl! If lounging by the pool is more your speed, there is no shortage of great pools and hot weather. As for where to stay in Scottsdale, the sky is the limit. They have so many beautiful properties with fabulous amenities. We chose the Fairmont Princess Scottsdale which was one of the nicest properties I have stayed at. This AAA Five Diamond resort offers something for everyone. During the winter holidays the property is transformed into a winter wonderland with 4.5 million LED lights, an ice skating rink, ferris wheel, build a bear workshop, polar glide ice slide, train rides, hot cocoa, smores, tree lighting ceremony and even a Santa’s Workshop. In Spring they host a Kentucky Derby Lawn Party complete with music, lawn games and mint juleps. Every summer the Princess showcases a different theme and offers dive-in movies, fireworks, an aqua light fest every Friday and Saturday, sparkling pools and even a white sand beach. The property offers several trendy restaurants for your dining needs. My favorite by far was Bourbon Steakhouse. The service was impeccable and the food was out of this world. With the ever-revolving creations from chef Michael Mina, our taste buds were mesmerized. Their classic Black Truffle Mac & Cheese was memorable and the Mesquite Grilled Filet accompanied by a trio of mouth-watering sauces melts in your mouth. Scottsdale and the surrounding Phoenix areas truly are a desert oasis. The calming feeling and gorgeous views will take your breath away. Outstanding golfing, spas, decadent dining, nightlife, world-class resorts, unbeatable hiking, old west vibes and unique shopping will leave you wanting to return to this tranquil area time and time again.

four-legged adventures in big bear

By Murphy the Moose @thedogsoflatravel

We have to admit this pandemic thing we keep hearing about is pretty cool for us pups, not sure what it means, but our parents sure are around a lot more these days. This past year has been pawsome as mom and dad never leave us at home anymore since the world turned upside down. Over the past year, we have been road tripping pretty much every weekend, and we love it! A few weeks ago, our parents told us we would be heading up to Big Bear Mountain, and we could hardly contain ourselves.

"...a natural gas barbecue for those yummy T-bone steaks, a wood-burning fireplace..." quick 90 minute drive from home and we had arrived. With the wind blowing through our fur we pulled up to our vacation rental and the excitement rose to a whole new level. The fresh mountain air never smelled so good, and our mischievous little squirrel friends poked their heads around what seemed to be every tree. We overheard mom and dad say that our home away from home for the weekend was booked off of the Destination Big Bear’s website, and it was exactly what the doctor ordered. This pet-friendly mountain condo rental was perfect for us and included all the things we love; a natural gas barbecue for those yummy T-bone steaks, a wood-burning fireplace for the crisp evenings, and easy accessibility to Bear Mountain & Snow Summit.

A

Once we settled in, we gathered around the fire to discuss our plans for the weekend. There are many activities available, from hiking trails to pontoon boat rides, segway tours, and even a plethora of pet-friendly restaurants to visit in Big Bear village! One of the first things mom and dad did was go to www.bigbear.com to check out the best places to enjoy the great outdoors. A list of hiking options was the first activity to catch our eyes, and we decided to start our day checking out Mill Creek road and The Pine Knot Trail which were highly recommended. The hike offered beautiful views surrounded by Mother Nature at her finest. After a few hours of checking out the beauty of the land, we had built up quite the appetite so we headed straight to Big Bear Village to see where all those great smells were coming from. The first stop was Amangela’s Sandwich and Bagel House for a tasty lunch outdoors. Sitting outside offered just the right amount of people watching. Our lunch was delicious and we enjoyed a few bites of mom’s Turkey Pesto Wrap while dad had the French Dip which he said was too good to share. Next, we headed up to Castle Rock Trail to burn off some calories and enjoy a vigorous climb. We quickly realized

this was one of the most popular hikes in town. It seemed like everyone had the same idea that we did. The journey to get there was one we will never forget, the perfect backdrop of dense forest comprised of pine and oak trees made for the ideal path to our destination. After posing for a few panoramic photos we pointed our snouts downwards and headed back to the parking lot for a much-needed nap by the fireplace. On the way back to our vacation home we decided to stop by the Bone Yard and Grill to pick up a to-go order for dinner which consisted of a Lemon Rosemary Chicken Flatbread, Grilled Shrimp Tacos and some very hard to resist BBQ that made our mouths water. The next morning after a restful night’s sleep we made our way up to Snow Summit to take in the fresh mountain air and of course, we may have chased a few squirrels along the way. The blanket of flowers cascading over the mountain above was creating a serious buzz everywhere we looked. We walked around the mountain base area for a good hour and were then told it was time for us to head back as mom and dad had plans to explore Big Bear from the air! Big Bear Helicopter took them out for a super fun tour where they got a birds’ eye view of Bear Valley and the surrounding San Bernardino mountains; yes we may indeed have been a little sad that we were not allowed to go with them. As they told us all about their helicopter adventure, the sadness was starting to set in, it was clear from the look in their eyes and the suitcases on the bed that it was almost time to head home. Our parents know us all too well and the only way to distract us from our despair was to mention lunch. The sun was shining as we headed off to our final stop, 572 Social Kitchen and Lounge. One of the most popular eateries in the entire Big Bear Village this dining establishment has everything you could want, from fresh salads, pizzas, burgers, poke, sandwiches, and more. Local restaurateurs Gus and Nancy Gonzalez along with their partner Rick Rey are changing the food scene in Big Bear one restaurant at a time and wow are they doing a great job. Our last meal was one to remember as we sat on the pet-friendly outdoor patio. From the Cali Burger to the Chopped Salad each bite we scored was delicious and we have to admit, it made the ride back down the mountain that much more manageable. Until next time Big Bear, we will return soon!

9 TRIPS FOR 2021 According to a recent report by the Adventure Travel Trade Association (ATTA), adventure travel is expected to recover about three to four years faster than mass travel – and grow more rapidly. In fact, tourism ministers and secretaries around the world have identified adventure and nature travel as leading segments in the travel industry’s restart. Another major trend to keep an eye on post-pandemic is greener and lower-impact itineraries. The ATTA cited recent data from BlackRock, the world’s largest asset fund, that found that more people are interested in climate change than ever before, and that a growing number of companies are investing in efforts to help the environment.

Lotusland, the Dreamy Gardens of Montecito By Melissa Curtin

xotic flowers hung from trees and off planters from above, with pops of color reminding us it was springtime. Monstera, known as the Swiss cheese plant, exploded in monstrous sizes around us while what looked like a variety of cycad species showed off nature's symmetry in leaf placement and growth. Colorful seeds exploded on the ground from rare plants while the whole garden felt like we had been transported to a whimsical fantasyland, somewhere not in the U.S.

64

ENDLESS SUMMER 2021

Recognized as one of the ten best gardens of the world, my garden club mother and I excitedly made sure to be on time to experience Lotusland, a 37-acre botanical garden and estate in Montecito just east of Santa Barbara, California. Since ticket entry allows for two hours of exploration we made sure to study the map of the grounds and made a plan to navigate the more than 20 gardens that awaited.

Great Lawn we viewed birds of paradise and sculptural bushes of animals as the Topiary Garden lead us to the Rose Garden where the main house is situated. For those who wish to learn more than the guide stationed in each garden, QR codes can be accessed on cell phones to learn horticultural and historical information. Several of the gardens showcase fanciful themes including the Theater Garden, Japanese Garden, and Blue Garden, where Madame Walska selected only plants with silvery to blue-grey foliage in 1948. You might spot colored glass in the gardens (from Arrowhead Bottling Company) that look like gemstones, perhaps reminding visitors that Walska once sold her jewelry collection to make the gardens possible. The setting made me visualize the entertaining that might have occurred poolside in this dreamy garden location situated in the American Riviera. We began by meandering the Tropical Garden to the right of the parking lot while eyeing the Japanese gardens to our left, evident by the torii and central pond. The air felt crisp and intoxicating like we just entered a forest. I reminded my mom to deeply inhale through her nose and breathe out through her mouth because all of this oxygen should not be wasted. As our paths transitioned from the Cycad Garden and circled the Shade Palm Garden, an ebullient guide couldn't wait to show us the Bromeliad Garden where a rare flower bloom was transpiring its pink, purple, and striped green wispy bells down to the garden floor – a sight only possible at this very moment before it dies. He pointed out the white feathery moving critters that I noticed were ladybird beetle larva. The Cycad Garden is the second largest in the world and boasts over 450 specimens including 3 rare cycads which are extinct in the wild. After admiring the Chilean palms and passing a slew of Dr. Seusslooking trees with their bottom trunks bulging above the soil, my mother witnessed firsthand the diversity of cacti on the west coast all in bloom. Over 300 different species of cacti are grouped by their country of origin. The Cactus Garden, like a whimsical storybook setting, delighted us with snaking cacti, hairy cacti, seed exploding cacti, baby flowers exploding from cacti ears, and bold flower beauties shooting off the spikes in color pops of fuchsia, cream and pink, and reddishorange. This horticultural wonderland is the result of Madame Ganna Walska, a Polish opera singer and socialite, who owned the property from 1941 until her death in 1984 at the age of 97. She spent 43 years of her life designing the gardens with exotic plants and landscape designers have continued to cultivate the gardens in her spirit to this day. Walska referred to herself as an "Enemy of the Average" as the gardens reflect her desire for the dramatic, the unexpected, and the truly fanciful. She purchased the estate with a man who would become her sixth husband, to create a refuge for Tibetan monks and originally named it "Tibetland." She sent her garden assistants on tours of the neighborhood with strict instructions to purchase the largest and most magnificent plants they could find, even if the specimens weren't for sale. Past grandiose hedges and odd ancient weathered stone statues in the Theatre Garden from Madame's chateau in France smuggled to America during the war, we excitedly screamed, "Look at this!" repeatedly at each discovery witnessed all around us. Along with the

A charitable woman, Walska's ultimate legacy was to leave behind the gardens. As the shop attendant in the Garden Store reminded us, "Walska gave away a lot and didn't want people to know. She wouldn't want the story to be about her, but the gardens. She even had a perfume line in Paris back in the day." As we continued our garden stroll, we spotted ferns around a collection of Australian tree ferns built-in 1968 then admired 140 kinds of aloes surrounding a kidney-shaped pool with two large cascading fountains of giant clamshells. Lotuses are usually in bloom during July and August while visitors can delight in water lilies along with several extraordinary botanical collections, such as rare cycads, palms, and euphorbias. New collections include an Insectary Garden and a Palmetum (palm collection). To enhance plant growth, three or four beehives are kept in the back. Lotusland is the first botanical garden in the U.S. to become fully organic. The Insectary Garden is a key ingredient of this success since the garden philosophy is that healthy, living soil is the foundation for healthy plants, and predator species are the foundation for a balanced food- chain. Soils are enriched with composted tea, produced in-house from plant clippings that nourish the soil. Plants are chosen that encourage predator insects that can eat pests and attract a healthy array of pollinators. At a time when people appreciate being outdoors more than ever, Lotusland feels like garden therapy with a force of nature behind it. When visiting, consider staying in downtown Santa Barbara at the quaint Eagle Inn (theeagleinn.com) located blocks from the water. The Spanish Mission-style B&B offers private balconies and patios, fireplaces in room, and spa tubs. Breakfast is served each morning at your door and Lotusland is less than a 15-minute drive away. Lotusland became a nonprofit botanic garden after Walska's death in 1984 and opened to the public in 1993. Lotusland is a public garden operating in a private neighborhood so timed tickets should be booked in advance. Ticket entry allows for two hours of exploration. Admission is $50 for adults and $25 for kids (ages 3 – 17). Admission is free for children under two years old and pets are not permitted, except for guide dogs. A Garden Shop is available for unique finds. Learn more at lotusland.org or email reservation@lotusland.org.

2021

The Year of Rebirth I think we can all agree that the past year has been one for the ages, one that has given most of us more time than we have ever had in our entire lives. When we look back at this year we often hear the question, “Did we maximize the time we were gifted from the universe?” It has been said time and again that this pandemic can be looked at as a “reset” for the human race, a time to reflect on what it is truly important to us and a time to sit back and re-evaluate our lives. With all the time off to de-stress and take a deep breath, it has been much easier to work on parts of our lives that either had been neglected or we simply never had the time for. Maybe your health was declining, maybe you had lost touch with family or friends, maybe there was that activity or project that you had been putting off for years. If this is you and you simply didn't make the time there is no reason you cannot start now! We decided with the time given to us that among other goals we had set that we would create a holistic life improvement project for both ourselves and our readers and it involves looking at all three parts of our lives; our past, present and future. The idea was to feature a local So Cal expert in three different fields from three different phases of our lives, what a great way to create holistic health by looking at yesterday, today and tomorrow! We chose these experts due to being at the top of their industries each adding extreme value to their customers in their special way. We not only sat down with these three experts for a face to face interview but also went as far as being a client to fully understand how they could help us improve our lives. We learned a lot about ourselves working with each expert and highly recommend each one of you do the same to bring overall health to you and your family. Without further ado let us introduce our first expert Heather Fleming the owner of Sharelooms based in San Diego. 66

PAST For the past portion of this project, we decided to look into our family's ancestry which has always been very intriguing to us. A topic of conversation over the years but one that never came to fruition, what a better time to delve into this with a full year to do some deep research. Through our time searching the internet, we came across a business in San Diego named Sharelooms that specializes in helping families share their stories for future generations in quite a unique way. Through ancestry work among many other forms of information sources the owner, Heather Fleming helps her customers create a blueprint of their families' past to create long-lasting memories that will live forever! We sat down with Heather to get a further understanding of all aspects of Sharelooms and we hope you find it as interesting as we did! LATM: Hello Heather, thank you for taking the time to do this article with us, we are excited to learn more about Ancestry in general as we believe it is a subject not a lot of people know much about. Can you explain to our readers the types of services that are offered at your company Sharelooms? HF: At Sharelooms we are dedicated to helping families preserve and share their stories for future generations. We use a combination of ancestry research, photo and video services, along with storytelling to create Custom Legacy Projects called Sharelooms. LATM: How does one get into the career of human ancestry? Was this something you showed interest in at a young age? HF: My background is in graphics, printing and interactive media. I studied Graphic Communication at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo’s esteemed program. And yes, I most definitely had a passion for family photos and family history at a young age. I was creating projects for our family as a little girl and have continued to do so ever since. The more projects I created through the years, the more I realized how much many other, if not all, families also value the preservation and sharing of their families’ precious history - thus, Sharelooms was born. LATM: How has your industry done with the trying times of the recent pandemic? Have you found with people having more free time to delve into projects that this has positively affected your business? HF: Most recently, with the world starting to open back up again and allowing more interaction, we have been very excited to see the number of families expressing a desire to start their Legacy Projects. With all of the extra stay-at-home time this past year, we have noticed an increase in requests from families to organize special heirlooms and photos. The connection to family and older generations has been such a welcomed dose of comfort for us all. Families have started with simple do-it-yourself-pandemic-family-projects, which then sparked an interest in taking their family preservation and sharing to another level. Fortunately for us, in working with Sharelooms, our clients have pleasantly realized how helpful it can be to get professional assistance Unfortunately, we have also had more Memorial Services, but we feel honored to be able to help

families capture and share these touching events through our live streaming, video recordings and memorial photo slideshows. It is truly humbling for us to see how much our Sharelooms services have been able to provide a means of inclusion for special loved ones near and far, as many were otherwise unable to attend due to pandemic travel and gathering restrictions. LATM: You must have found some pretty interesting stories during your time searching people's past, do you have any to share? HF: During the interview process of almost every single Sharelooms project, it is both heartwarming and fascinating to watch families discover facts and learn formerly unknown family stories. Some of the stories I have most appreciated are about World War II and the Great Depression. It’s remarkable to hear how great sacrifices made by families during those times continued to impact them throughout their entire lives, and even future generations. While working with my Grandma on her life story, we were able to read the love letters that my Grandpa had written her from the South Pacific during World War II. Holding those handwritten letters felt like my grandfather was right there with us telling the wartime stories himself. The details in his letters have helped us piece together a lot of my Grandpa’s experience in World War II, even after he had passed. Another standout moment during an interview was watching a family learn that their grandfather was a guard at the historic Nuremberg trials in Germany. That was extraordinary. LATM: On average how long does each project take to complete for a client? HF: All of our projects are custom and unique to each family, so they do vary. Some projects can take a week while others can take six months depending on the project. On average they take a couple of months to complete. LATM: What are the major challenges that you come across while diving into your research on a family's past? HF: The biggest challenge is getting families to start their projects earlier. We encourage families to start capturing their stories today. The younger you start, the easier the stories are to remember. We can also complete projects in chapters where we film stories of ancestry to present. Then with new milestones, we can

add new chapters. All of our families are so thankful to have the completed projects, but the key to getting them done is to start taking small steps. LATM: Have you had any clients that have taken the information you have given them and traveled abroad to meet up with newfound family members? We have seen this before in movies so this must happen in real life, yes? HF: I haven’t heard of any yet, but I envision it happening and am excited for the day that it does. I would love to go to Scotland to discover my Scottish roots. I recently uncovered my Scottish heritage and would be interested in learning more about the country and culture. LATM: Since we're on the topic of travel do you have any favorite places you have been to? Any cool stories to share with our travel-loving readers? HF: Travel is one of my biggest passions. My favorite way to learn about history is to immerse myself in the culture. In college, I was lucky enough to study abroad in London. I loved the city and was so appreciative to be able to learn about Shakespeare, Musical Theater, London and its culture on location. I also discovered that my ancestry is significantly English which is possibly why I had a great calling to explore England. As a parent, some of my favorite places to take my family are the National Parks. They are some of the most beautiful and interesting places on the planet and we all learn so much. Two of my favorite destinations are Alaska and Denali National Park via the Alaskan railroad and Yellowstone National Park. We love to go places where we can see animals like bison, bear and wolves in their natural habitat. We also especially enjoy the Eastern Sierras and Mammoth. LATM: How do our readers contact your company if they would like to know more about their family's ancestry? HF: We would love to help your readers learn more about their ancestry and preserve their family's stories. They can email us at family@ sharelooms.com or call us at 858-461-9123.

PRESENT For the present portion of the project, we thought to ourselves, what is a professional service that could help us with our lives at this very moment, a person or a business that can implement

strategies, add extreme value and assist with having a more holistic life. We searched high and low and found a true healer in every sense of the word, a man that wears many hats with many talents as a life coach and so much more, ladies and gentlemen we give you Carlos Casados! LATM: Good day Carlos, thank you for taking the time to let our readers get to know you and your scope of work more through this article featuring holistic health. It cannot be said enough that 2020 was the most challenging year in recent history and it is our thought that your line of work must have been inundated with people struggling with their day-to-day lives. CC: It certainly has been an "interesting" year, hasn't it? - Wasn't that the old Chinese curse? "May you live in interesting times!" They valued peace of mind and stillness back in those days, didn't they? LATM: First off can you tell us a little bit about yourself and your line of work? By doing some research we see you have a very diverse background and that you have a lot to offer someone who is looking to bring health and happiness into their lives. CC: I'm a Southern California native, born right here in Orange County, and I grew up mostly in the Costa Mesa and Newport Beach area. I got involved in Martial Arts and Yoga at an early age and became incredibly fascinated with the Human Potential Movement very early on. These pathways led me to the study of meditation, NLP, hypnosis, body language, Asian medicine, and philosophy. There are a lot of names for what I do, Hypnotist, Developmental Coach, NLP Trainer, Agent of Change, and others. My training has been very diverse but always related to the categories of psychological, and physical wellness. I feel that the essential idea is I'm the guy you come to when you're ready to become your ideal self, free of unnecessary baggage, and excited to start living your best life. We all have incredible potential that's gone untapped, and sometimes we need the right person to awaken that sleeping giant within us if you know what I mean. I've spent the majority of my life devoted to self-development methodologies and to learning the best tools for maximizing performance, releasing old wounds, and 67

refining our approaches to living. Leadership development, Strategic communication, Conflict Resolution, and Wellness Consulting are my jam. LATM: What is the most gratifying and also the most challenging part of your line of work? CC: I enjoy stimulating healthy habits and helping my clients grow into the empowered people they want to be. Seeing how people step up and into their own is a fantastic thing to witness...it's both gratifying and humbling! LATM: I would think that the majority of people would not understand much about hypnotherapy, can you explain to our readers the benefits of how it could help them with any of the daily challenges they may be facing at this moment? CC: Yes. A lot of people do misunderstand the purpose of hypnosis and hypnotherapy but, I hope to clarify this impression with the work I do. I'm on a mission to open and refocus public attention on a very underused and under-appreciated tool for wellness. TV and media haven't helped this image much so allow me to simplify a very deep subject with a couple of sentences. What is often referred to as hypnosis is simply the use of communication in a specialized way to refocus attention and imagination to affect a change in the person's reality. - It involves a psycho-dramatic ritual, called induction, to fascinate the mind and enhance or direct the awareness to new resources for creativity, improved concentration, releasing negative habits, forming new healthy habits, resolving negative emotional states, deepening relaxation, and more. Just about all of our problems are the result of habitual thinking. Even our identity or basic persona has so much to do with subjectivity. Hypnosis and hypnotherapy are tools for creating new, more compelling solutions and that lead to a better life with more choices and opportunities. As Einstein cleverly stated, "We cannot solve our problems with the same level of thinking that created them." LATM: Do you have any stories you can tell us about how you helped someone overcome a major addiction/phobia etc that stands out to you? CC: I have a lot of happy reports from my clients, many of whom sought help from various other mental health professionals to no avail. Some of the most seemingly fantastic stories I have to leave out since I don't want to be misunderstood as having practiced beyond the scope of my profession. I want to be clear 68

ENDLESS SUMMER 2021

that I am not a psychologist or a licensed medical practitioner. I am a thoroughly trained layperson with some hard-earned skills and a deep sense of compassion for those I assist. Having said that, I have helped several people who struggled with very resistant behaviors, such as strong phobic reactions and decadeslong habits that nothing else they tried relieved them of. I'll leave it at that, concerning the bylaws which govern the use of hypnosis by vocational hypnotists and hypnotherapists in California. Fortunately, Senate Bill (SB-577) allows citizens to choose complementary and alternative care, by acknowledging their rights to do so with informed consent. I feel fortunate to have the skills and knowledge I have developed, due to having studied with some incredible teachers and mentors over the years. LATM: Can you tell us a little bit about your experience with your line of work during the current pandemic we have been in? Have you noticed a change in your business over the past year? CC: The Pandemic we've been facing has changed things quite a lot! Many people, at first, didn't realize how to proceed. It took a bit to adjust to the new protocols and requirements of the State, which changed a bit from time to time. I have gotten good at all the sanitation procedures and social distancing requirements necessary to run my practice successfully and without incident. Of course, I see more clients online these days but, many clients do come to see me in person too. I think my online clients have doubled, however. And the thing is, it's just as effective when I do it via Zoom. I think people are happily surprised when they realize this as it gives some comfort to those who wish to stay at home or who already live in other states and other countries. LATM: With a man of your background one can only assume that you must love to travel the globe! What are some of your favorite places you have been around the world? I imagine you would have had some life-changing trips in your line of work... CC: I have the travel bug and there are so many places on my bucket list! So far, I've enjoyed visiting Europe, Africa, and South America. A big game-changer for me was climbing Mount Kilimanjaro. Also, my Peruvian trip which included a prolonged stay with an Amazonian Shaman was life-changing and magical. I look forward to feeding my travel addiction as often as possible. - I won't be seeing another hypnotist remove that "vice" either!

LATM: What are your most special moments when you travel to a new country? Are you a man of adventure, culture, leisure, or a little bit of it all? CC: For me, it's all about the architecture, natural atmosphere, food, and culture. Seeing a new place changes me each time. It stimulates my creativity and gets my juices flowing. For a little while, I get to jump into a new world and live as though I'm a whole different person. That's quite a lot of fun for an imaginative, playful, and adventurous person like myself. And I get incredible enjoyment from learning about the history of a place, too. Being such a foodie and wine enthusiast means that I can step into that old-world feeling and taste a place with all of my senses. It's truly awesome and tickles my spirit to no end! LATM: Thank you so much for taking the time to work with us to bring more holistic health to our lives! How can our readers reach out in case they are searching for the same enriching value that we found by working with you? CC: You are quite welcome, it has been a pleasurable experience working with your team and I look forward to hearing from any of your readers that I can help in any way. All of my information is below and I can be contacted through my website or by phone. Carlos Martin Casados Mht, MNLP, MTD Hypnotherapy; Life Strategies; Transformational Counseling; Conflict Resolution; Neuro-Linguistic Programming, Wellness Consulting www.hypnotherapybreakthrough.com Tel (530) 433 4569 FUTURE When we decided to look into a profession that could help us all with our future both near and far we came up with the idea to find a cardiologist who could give us ever so important tools to ensure we live a long and healthy life. We searched both OC and LA and found one of the most successful heart specialists in the Orange County area, Dr. Brian Kolski; the man who helps thousands achieve longevity in their heart health with the latest and greatest technology at the Orange County Heart Institute in Orange, California.

LATM: Dr. Kolski, thank you for taking the time out of your busy schedule to do this article with us. With 2020 being such a challenging year we compiled a trio of specialists to give our readers hope for their overall health. With you being Orange County's leading heart doctor we figured what a better health expert to give us a glimmer of hope for our futures making sure we are all living our best lives day in and day out. First off can you tell our readers a little bit about yourself and your line of work? We see that you are an Interventional Cardiologist, can you elaborate on exactly what that entails? BK: Thank you for the kind words and the opportunity to be a part of this article. My hope would be if one person reads this and makes a change in their health to save a life, I would say mission accomplished. First off to explain Interventional Cardiology is a subsection of cardiology where doctors can do invasive procedures such as valve replacements as well as coronary stent replacement. As far as highlights of my career I have a lot of experience with working with professional athletes including the US men’s winter Olympic team, US World Cup soccer, and I am currently the cardiologist for the Anaheim Ducks hockey organization. I participate in the most cutting-edge device-related clinical trials, and our hospital was one of the largest enrollers in 2 acute heart attack studies that will be published in the next year. I am also very proud to direct the busiest transcatheter heart valve program in Orange County. LATM: What is the most exciting as well as the most challenging part of being a cardiologist? BK: The most exciting part of being a cardiologist in 2020 is how cutting-edge treatments are helping patients with heart defects and disease. We now have medications and procedures that can make people's lives not only more productive and less symptomatic but also much longer. Technology has advanced so much that we are doing procedures now that when I did my training a decade ago, we would never dream of doing. The most challenging part of being a cardiologist is getting patients to subscribe to a healthy lifestyle, we have so many great therapies to offer but nothing beats preventing disease before it happens.

much bigger problem. Rule of thumb any patient that has dizziness, shortness of breath, or chest discomfort should be evaluated by a cardiologist as soon as possible. LATM: Since heart disease is the leading cause of death in America, can you give our readers some tips on how to improve and sustain good cardiovascular health? BK: I would say that just keeping up a lifestyle that has a good balance of whole food nutrition as well as a daily exercise routine is the number one way to prevent heart disease. A nutritious diet to me is defined as predominantly plantbased with lean protein as well as lower in starchy carbs and refined sugars. LATM: Can you tell us a little bit about your experience of being a heart specialist during the current pandemic we are in? Have you noticed any change in your business over the past year? BK: This has been a very challenging time in the hospital. We have had several patients have delayed care due to overcrowding, and fear of hospitals. In addition, COVID-19 has significant cardiovascular issues related to blood clotting, and damage to the heart muscle. I also work as a consultant for professional sports, and we are seeing a huge increase in demand for the evaluation of players and coaches who are recovered from Covid. We have been luckily able to adapt the office with significant remote visits and telehealth, which keeps our waiting room and office at a low density for safety. LATM: We have heard that the Orange County Heart Institute is a top-ranking establishment in California, can you tell us a little about the type of equipment/technology that is used there that puts them above the rest? BK: Orange County Heart Institute is definitely at the forefront using the latest technology including remote patient monitoring, arrhythmia monitoring which our patients can all use wearables. We have the latest in ultrasound and nuclear stress testing, as well as vascular studies.

LATM: What are some symptoms that our readers should be aware of related to their overall heart health?

LATM: Since we are a travel-based publication you know we just have to pick your brain on some travel-related questions! Do you have any hearthealthy tips for our readers as they prepare for an upcoming much-needed vacation?

BK: I always worry about patients who notice a significant decline in their exercise tolerance as this is often an indicator of a

BK: I think the biggest mistake people make when vacationing is poor choices when it comes to diet. Oftentimes people are grabbing

non-nutritious foods at the airport and when they are on the run. I always recommend packing heart-healthy snacks on travel days and trying to identify healthy restaurants when people are out and about. For long travel days, it’s also a good idea to wear compression socks and make sure people are getting up on long flights and walking at least once an hour as well as staying well hydrated! LATM: Since we are on the topic of travel, we have to ask what are your favorite places to visit around the world? Any spots that are on the bucket list that you are excited to visit soon? BK: I have spent a lot of time in Central and South America, both working and traveling. My favorite place in the world is Peru because you can be in the mountains, the jungle, the beach or the city all within a couple of hours. One of the coolest things we did when we were in Peru was organized all daily hikes ourselves. We were too late to book a tour guided hike on the Inca Trail, so we purchased topography maps and hiked through the Peruvian backcountry through rural villages and mountains with no guides. The villagers were amazingly hospitable, we often camped out in schoolyards or Villagers Farms. To see the sunrise on Machu Picchu, we hiked up from the base camp at Aguascalientes with headlamps on, and we convinced the guards to let us in early. We were able to experience Machu Picchu with no other tourists for three hours while we waited for the sunrise. This truly was a memory that we will have forever! **For our adventurous travel we love to go helicopter skiing where you can ski fresh powder that’s never-ending all day. Mike Wiegele Heli-Skiing in British Columbia is my favorite!! LATM: Thank you so much for all the great information that we can all hopefully learn from for longer healthier lives. How can our readers make an appointment to come see you at the Orange County Heart Institute? BK: You are welcome and once again thank you for letting me inform your readers on better cardiovascular health. To book an appointment you can check us out online at https://briankolski.com or call the info below. Hot on the heels of the cruise line’s return to the Caribbean, 11 Royal Caribbean ships are set to cruise from the U.S. and Europe once again, beginning in July and August. Health and Safety Measures for Adventure of the Seas Bahamas Cruises Vacationers sailing on Adventure can cruise with peace of mind, knowing that all crew members and guests are tested and fully vaccinated against COVID-19. Travelers 16 years of age or older must be fully vaccinated, and as of Aug. 1, guests age 12 or older. Vacationers younger than the eligible age must undergo testing and follow other protocols. The vaccine requirement is one of the many layers of measures that safeguard the wellbeing of our guests and crew as well as the communities we visit. These additional health and safety protocols include our fully vaccinated crew, the robust onboard ventilation system, enhanced cleaning and sanitization. Royal Caribbean will continue to evaluate and update its measures as circumstances evolve and in compliance with various government and health authorities. Silver Shadow will circumnavigate Iceland with the launch of new all-Icelandic itineraries, returning to Northern Europe with three 10-day voyages from Reykjavik, beginning July 30. PUNTA MITA

Mexican Paradise Never Disappoints As we come to the end of one of the most challenging times in history a glimmer of hope has arisen in the travel industry with Mexico open and ready to welcome guests. For those jet setters chomping at the bit to escape internationally, a short flight from LAX to PVR is now on the table as one of the safest and easiest options. While the pandemic is ending authorities have deemed it safe to travel once again now that new safety guidelines have been set in place. As the travel ban has been lifted the local and federal government have set forth rules and regulations that each hotel and resort must abide by to ensure the utmost safety for not only guests but also staff members. Arguably one of Mexico’s top luxury resorts Four Seasons Punta Mita is open and welcoming guests with their enhanced global health and safety program Lead With Care. Upon arrival, each guest is required to pass a health screening which includes a computerized temperature check along with the completion of a questionnaire regarding their health and recent travels. All guests are required to wear a mask or face covering when in public indoor spaces and when receiving in-room services. With these top-notch safety and health regulations in place and adhered to the Four Seasons Punta Mita solidifies its spot as one of the top resorts in Mexico. A quick 45-minute shuttle north of Puerto Vallarta airport and you enter the gates of Punta Mita. As you drive through the perfectly placed forest of palm trees the sense that you have entered a tropical oasis is ever so apparent. The fully manicured landscaping gives way to a panoramic view of the ocean as you arrive at your destination. The open-air lobby of the Four Seasons Punta Mita invites you to paradise as you gaze out over the stunning backdrop of the majestic blue waters of the Pacific. Peering out into the crashing waves below there is a sense that you have discovered one of the most beautiful places on earth and that you are in for a vacation of a lifetime!

The Four Seasons Punta Mita offers its guests a wide variety of accommodation options depending on the type of stay they are looking for. Whether your visit is for business or pleasure there truly is something for everyone. This past year marks the 20th anniversary of the resort and to celebrate they incorporated a full redesign of their 177 guestrooms which brought new life to the already world-class vacation destination. Artfully redefined with warm natural woods and neutral textiles the rooms are finished off with strokes of blue and orange to highlight the sea, sun, and sky of the

Riviera Nayarit sunshine coast. Newly renovated modern Mexican casitas with intimate sitting areas and private terraces provide the ultimate luxury and come with a variety of view options. To fully take in the magic of Punta Mita an ocean view casita is the obvious choice. For those looking for a little more room and privacy opt for a Plunge Pool Suite. These newly renovated suites offer spacious and modern touches with a living room, private terrace and your

very own plunge pool to take in the stunning views that make Punta Mita world-renowned. When traveling with the whole family book one of the properties on-site residences. These three to five-bedroom homes facing the Pacific Ocean make for the perfect family getaway offering one-level floor plans with your very own kitchen and private pool. The central location of the homes make it easy to access everything on the Four Seasons grounds but is far enough away for the ultimate private escape.

The resort also provides a range of four and fivebedroom villas that are set cliffside offering some of the most stunning sunset views on property. Each stand-alone villa makes for a secluded retreat with full-size kitchens, private pools and courtyards connecting bedrooms allowing for maximum privacy. These modern masterpieces range from 6,500 sq feet up to 13,000 square feet allowing for ideal entertaining space. Each villa comes with a golf cart for easy access to every part of the resort. It is easy to say that you will never find yourself bored while staying at the Four Seasons. From the moment you arrive, there is a long list of options put before you to ensure you have the trip of a lifetime. As you saunter across the meticulously clean grounds you notice the many ways that you will be spending your days ahead of you. Start your day at one of the three pool options to choose from as each location offers its own unique experience. Start at Nuna, the resort’s main pool which provides an infinityedge perfect for sipping cocktails and gazing out at the shimmering ocean below. 82

Don’t forget to bring your camera for those Insta-worthy pool shots. Tamai (which means “star” in the Huichol Indian language) is an adults-only pool and an ideal escape for a restful afternoon basking in the hot Mexican sun. This hidden gem boasts two main pools and two plunge pools, a whirlpool, a full bar and 10 private cabanas. Upgrade your fun in the sun surrounded by lush tropical foliage with a poolside cabana and bottle service. Each cabana features contemporary wood furnishings, including a daybed strewn with pillows, soft lighting, a 106-centimeter (42-inch) plasma television, DVD player, state-of-the-art sound system, wireless high-speed Internet, a telephone, private bar with refreshing juices, water and cooling eyeshades, and a variety of books. Place an order for lunch from the bar menu or the in-room dining menu or enjoy a variety of spa treatments which can be arranged in the comfort of your cabana ranging from massages to manicures. For a little excitement visit the Lazy River, grab a float and lay back as you breeze

along with a cocktail in hand. The resort’s lazy river offers family-friendly fun for all ages. Golf enthusiasts come to Punta Mita from all over the world for a chance to play the two incredible courses offered on property. With some of the most stunning backdrops you will ever see coupled with the challenge of Jack Nicklaus-designed courses you are truly in for an experience of a lifetime. Bahia Golf Course features panoramic views of the Bahia de Banderas where golfers can enjoy challenging shots all throughout the course including a beachfront hole merely steps from the sand. Watch local surfers catch a wave as you drive your ball into the palm tree-lined fairways, it simply doesn’t get better than this! The Pacifico Course is home to the infamous “Tail of the Whale” hole number three and is worth the round all in itself. Take aim and try your heart out to land your ball on the world’s only natural island green (which can be the ultimate test for any golfer depending on the wind). This meticulously designed course offers golfers of all levels a

round to remember with its many challenges and stunning views of the Sierra Madre Mountains and the Pacific Ocean. If golfing is not your game don’t worry, the Four Seasons Punta Mita offers tennis courts, basketball courts, a state-of-the-art fitness center, a luxurious spa, water sports including surfing, snorkeling, scuba diving and more! In the mood for some family fun game action? The resort’s game room comes fully equipped with ping pong, air hockey, video games, movies and more making sure each guest can be a kid at any age! A trip to Mexico would not be complete without indulging in some of the country’s finest tequila. The Four Seasons offers an educational and fun tequila tasting/blending opportunity for its guests. Receive a full course on this highly underrated spirit from an expert complete with the perfect souvenir to bring home! The resort’s Tequila aficionado Enrique Alejos will guide you on the ways to identify, analyze and understand Mexico’s prized export to the point that you will leave the experience feeling that you are also yourself a professional in the art of tequila tasting. Each guest will learn how to smell and taste the different types (Blanco, Reposado, Anejo and Extra Anejo) and then blend their own concoction that they, in turn, get to bring home with them. Every March through December the property releases hundreds of Olive Ridley baby sea turtles into the ocean to aid in the ever-declining sea turtle population thanks to human negligence. A small nominal fee is charged to each guest that wishes to partake in this once in a lifetime experience.

That donation is then put back into the conservation program of saving these majestic marine creatures through a non-profit called the Red Tortuguera A.C. which unites sea turtle camps and aides researchers in Jalisco and Nayarit. There is nothing more gratifying than opening a small box of baby sea turtles ready to be released and watching them bravely make their way into the ocean while the sun sets across the sky. It is truly a magical experience. It can easily be said that the dining program at the resort is worth the trip all by itself. The culinary team of chefs work diligently day in and day out to ensure their guests’ needs are met beyond all expectations. From the first decadent bites at breakfast to the gourmet dinner for two with toes in the sand and everything in between you are guaranteed a first-class meal every time. The resort’s signature “toes in the sand” dining experience Bahia by Richard Sandoval is one that cannot be missed during your stay. Make sure to have the concierge secure a dinner reservation just in time to watch the Mexican sunset melt into the northern tip of the Bay of Banderas. The skyscapes that reveal themselves all around the Four Seasons Punta Mita are breathtaking as there is a special relationship between the air currents, clouds and sunbeams that altogether make the most beautiful sunsets you have ever seen. Couple this eye-catching backdrop with an open-air beachside dining experience and you will find this to be quite an experiential meal. Executive Chef Richard Sandoval, a renowned US chef with Mexican heritage will wow you with daily menu offerings consisting of locally caught fresh seafood, poultry, steaks and vegetables that are cooked to perfection over a wood-burning grill. Bahia is also fully equipped with a variety of highly-rated Tequilas so make sure to ask your server to pair your courses accordingly. The resort’s Asian-inspired restaurant Aramara which means (“sacred place by the ocean” in native Huichol) brings a menu of flavor bursting recipes that perfectly represent Chef Esther Sanchez. Born in Guadalajara Chef Sanchez studied at the Culinary and Gastronomy Institute of Mexico and this coupled with her vast experience working in top restaurants throughout the world is exactly why guests fill her restaurant day after day. A culinary genius in her own right Chef Sanchez uses contemporary Asian cooking techniques blended with the freshest of ingredients to put together an artistic presentation of Asian fusion dishes you won’t soon forget. The only permanent lodging structure located on top of the Uyuni Salt Flats of Bolivia, Kachi Lodge’s modernist domes rise from the flat expanse of the altiplano like a surreal space station. In the daylight, honeymooners enjoy adventures such as downhill mountain biking on the edge of the Tunupa Volcano, trekking through the giant cacti of Incahuasi Island, or viewing the sunrise and sunset from the peak of Kachi Island. NEW & TRENDING:

Owned by the King of Morocco, Royal Mansour is a palatial oasis crafted by over 1,500 local artisans as an ode to traditional Moroccan architecture. A quiet retreat just steps from the Medina, guests are welcomed with an open-air courtyard, nearly four acres of lush gardens, and private multi-story riads dotted along petal-pink pathways. No carts; no rooms; no crowds. The property has long been a destination for travelers seeking privacy within the medina walls while also enjoying quick access to the city’s cultural icons from the Majorelle Gardens to Jemaa el-Fnaa. The all-riad property is expanding its outdoor footprint by nearly three acres to extend its quiet oasis in the heart of Marrakech. The new outdoor spaces include an herb and vegetable garden that will be utilized by the property’s restaurants and spa as well as a private dining experience elevated above the trees for up to eight guests. The property has also designated a new artist’s studio, Atelier d’Artiste, housed in a glass-paneled greenhouse, 90

to host a myriad of wellbeing activities, including pottery, photography, land art, and embroidery, led by art therapists. Dining Above the Red City Nestled within lemon and palm trees, a new private dining experience, aptly titled The Nest, is now elevated 14 feet above the gardens with uninterrupted views over Marrakech and the Koutoubia Mosque’s Atlas tower. Accommodating up to eight guests, the 430 square-foot, open-air dining space is an extension of Le Jardin, featuring a Mediterranean and Asian-fusion menu by Michelin-starred chef Yannick

Alléno including royal sea bream ceviche, sirloin beef wagyu, and a frozen coconut dessert. Whether for a cocktail at sunset, a celebratory affair, or a private family dinner, The Nest offers a hidden sanctuary within the property grounds. Each experience is completely customizable as the team works with guests to finalize curated playlists, floral arrangements, and exclusive menus. Through the winding pathways and verdant gardens, an alfresco dining table, La Table Champêtre, will also be available for private luncheons. Wellbeing Through Art With the expansion also comes Royal

Mansour Marrakech’s Atelier d’Artiste, a glass-paneled greenhouse surrounded by the quiet serenity of the property’s gardens. Further enhancing the property’s 360-degree approach to wellbeing, the Atelier d’Artiste will host art therapy sessions including painting, modeling, pottery, and calligraphy, each beginning with a guided meditation. Available a la carte or as part of the multi-day wellness retreats launching in September, guests will choose between private, couples, or family sessions with the resident expert. The two-hour creative workshops aim to relieve stress, reduce anxiety, and encourage selfreflection through the act of learning a new skill. Flourishing Gardens Expanding the property’s footprint to over six acres, the new outdoor spaces include a robust herb garden and organic vegetable orchard.

Medicinal plants, including mint, rosemary, sage, and lavender, are cultivated for use in infusions and treatments in the sprawling 27,000-square-foot Spa Royal Mansour. Meanwhile, freshly picked organic carrots, cardoons, eggplants, broad beans, and more are incorporated into the property’s four restaurants, with an emphasis on flavorful yet nutritious recipes. The Architect Luis Vallejo Landscape Studio, the original architects of Royal Mansour’s grounds, were chosen to oversee the expansion. The garden’s design drew inspiration from traditional Moroccan agricultural practices – an homage to the Old Wall of Marrakech that now borders the property. Nods to the UNESCO World Heritage Agdal Gardens and the Menara Gardens are also seen in the geometric grid of olive and palm trees and local flora and fauna. The gardens also reference the Bahia Palace with a distortion of the star of Morocco. A system of reservoirs dots the grounds as a nod to ancient irrigation systems that brought water from the Atlas Mountains as well as Andalusian and Persian garden concepts. In 2016, Luis Vallejo oversaw the relocation of the hotel’s regal entry gate to accommodate extended gardens and Michelin-starred chef Yannick Alléno’s fourth dining destination Le Jardin, a poolside Asian-fusion restaurant. A 6,000-square-foot swimming pool was also added, surrounded by a spacious deck to lounge as well as seven cabanas available for pool-side spa treatments and private dining. A Kid’s Pavilion, Le Jardin de Lila, also opened with a menu of activities embracing the local culture including Moroccan art activities, Arabic lessons, and dance classes. 91

Pebble Beach golf course has been host to seven men's major championships, consisting of six U.S. Opens as well as a PGA Championship and is slated to host the women's U.S. Open in 2023 as well as another men's U.S. Open in 2027.

TORREY PINES, CA It would be a sin to leave the west coast of California without a quick drive to Torrey Pines in La Jolla, 15 miles north of San Diego. Situated atop cliffs towering above the blue waters of the Pacific this is another coastal classic that will simply take your breath away. Named after the rare tree that is found in the wild along this stretch of San Diego coastline and on Santa Rose Island, Torrey Pines is well known as the best municipal golf course in the country. Although host to the annual Farmers Insurance Open Torrey Pines Golf Course will go down in the books as the host to one of the most dramatic wins in PGA Golf history. Back in 2008, Tiger woods defeated Rocco Mediate, forcing multiple playoff holes both Sunday as well as the following Monday, and he did it on one leg with a double stress fracture in his left tibia as well as a torn ACL. TV history was made during the event which aired on ESPN as well as NBC making it the highest-rated golf broadcast on network TV in 30 years. With year-round sunshine, stunning vistas, pristine fairways and meticulously manicured greens, Torrey Pines is simply a golfer's paradise.

OCEAN COURSE KIAWAH ISLAND, SOUTH CAROLINA Join the ranks of avid golfers who have tested their game at this American icon. With the most seaside holes in the Northern Hemisphere (ten to be exact that hug the Atlantic coastline) and blustering winds, you might want to bring an extra box of balls for this round. Although originally planned for the course to sit behind the dunes, designer Pete Dye's wife offered her suggestion to raise the entire course for its unobstructed views of Kiawah's mesmerizing coastline. This new and improved view carved its way into U.S. golf history-making The Ocean Course one of the more challenging courses in the country with its brisk and severely unpredictable Atlantic breezes. With its jaw-dropping backdrops, impeccable design and overall challenging play it is no wonder Ocean Course at Kiawah Island is only one of four courses to have hosted all of the PGA of America Championships. Host to the recent 103rd PGA Championship the Ocean Course was a part of golf history as Phil Michelson became the oldest golfer to win a major championship at the ripe age of 50!

BANDON DUNES, PACIFIC DUNES COURSE, OREGON

Situated on the dramatic Pacific Coastline in Oregon, Bandon Dunes is said to be one of the best all-around golfing venues in Western America with stunning backdrops to match its quartet of world-class golf courses. The Pacific Dunes course is viewed to many as the standout of the four courses which is reminiscent of some of the UK’s greatest links layouts. Architect Tom Doak has created a true golfing masterpiece by melding the Pacific Northwest's spectacular natural landscape with masterful golf course design. Awe-inspiring views throughout your round are said to be so incredible that you just may forget about the fact that you are not setting any course records, to say the least. Winds of up to 25mph, super-fast undulated greens and cavernous bunkers will challenge even the best of golfers so needless to say you need to bring your A-game to make par here. No carts, no cart paths, not a single piece of real estate on any of the sprawling links courses, a course made for golfers by golfers. With a fifth course being added this year called Sheep Ranch it is safe to say that 130 holes of golf all together makes for a golfers' dream come true.

BAY HILL, ORLANDO FLORIDA

The home of arguably golf ’s most famous name, Arnold Palmer, there couldn't be a more iconic course to play when checking off that bucket list. Proclaiming it to be the best course in Florida Palmer's history with the course is a story that needs to be told. While visiting Bay Hill for an exhibition match during the winter of 1965 Palmer found a golf course that perfectly suited his tastes with rugged natural surroundings teeming with wildlife and a sense of solitude that he found extremely desirable. With Palmer's business savvy and ability to visualize his ultimate goal he gained ownership of Bay Hill Club and Lodge in 1970 and turned it into today which is one of the country's top golf destinations. From the tips, the course measures in at over 7,200 yards and is a true test for golfers of all skill levels. Featuring several burdensome water features, players must draw upon the best of their golfing skills to navigate their way around this incredible layout. Palmer's goal had come true when he transformed Bay Hill Club into a full-service golfer's paradise giving guests a sense of belonging to a private club. Amenities include a 70 room lodge, a full-service spa, state-of-the-art fitness center, pool and tennis courts. Three nine-hole links courses (Challenger, Champion, and Charger) comprise the 27 holes of championship golf that made Bay Hill Club what it is today.

LATM: Where are your favorite spots to hit up in SoCal when you are not working? When friends and family come to visit where do you take them? EB: Well, when friends and family come to visit we go NO WHERE because we live on a property that is a slice of heaven. We moved to Ojai during the pandemic which means we haven’t really been able to see a ton, but we are super excited to explore just the two of us, and also with our friends, the hot springs, many of the hikes and the waterfalls around here. We'd like to check out the bike trails that go from Ojai down to Ventura. We’d love to camp. I really want to camp on top of the Topa Topas I think that’d be super exciting. JB: The beach, we love going to the beach. We’re going to have a new beach probably in Ventura and Santa Barbara which is going to be great. Also we like Big Bear. We like snowboarding and skiing but we haven’t been to Big Bear since the pandemic started. LATM: What has been your most proud achievement over the course of your career? JB: I’m really proud of the last film I directed, CLOUDS, because it wasn’t just something I had directed but it was something I produced and my company (Wayfarer Studios) financed. I think that was kind of an intersection of a lot of my skillsets and it was a really personal story about somebody that I love dearly, Zach Sobiech, who passed away 8 years ago now, who’s story I told as a documentary that aired on SoulPancake all those years ago. So Clouds and

most recently my book. Because it was really a culmination of years and years and years of exploring what it means to be a man. Pushing up against my resistance to write a book and release a book because I didn’t feel enough and I’m really proud of it. It’s a meditation on masculinity and I hope it touches people. LATM: What are your go to travel items you must have on a trip? EB: iPads, if you travel with kids. 98

ENDLESS SUMMER 2021

Anything that distracts a child, bring it and Melatonin, to help with jet lag. For me, it’s always important to bring a book because I love to find quiet moments to just read books. It’s super inspiring to me to read books in new places. JB: Wet Wipes and lots of Melatonin, for you and the kids. Also a really good suitcase that has a lot of good compartments and a charging thing in it. I wanna get a suitcase with the charging components for the iPads and

iPhones. LATM: Where is your ideal destination for a local weekend getaway? JB: Ojai Valley Inn. EB: Yeah, that’s a great one. JB: Emily can ride the golf cart while I go play golf and lose a bunch of golf balls. EB: There you go!

LATM: Tell our readers about your new book Justin and what you hope to achieve with its release. Why is it so important to you and what sparked the movement? JB: Man Enough is a meditation on masculinity. It’s really my journey of unpacking and unlearning and undefining what it means to be a man and all the ways in which I was socialized to be a man that didn’t serve me. The ways I was taught to sever that connection between my head and my heart. Man Enough is really my journey that hopefully will inspire the readers journey to unlearn and to relearn and to reestablish that connection between our heads and our hearts and to do the hard work of heart work. And what was important to me about the book and the movement was because I think that so many of the problems in the world today, stem from the way that men have been socialized and I truly believe that equality and equity come from when men are liberated and freed from these ridiculous expectations that have been put on us for years. I believe that the liberation of women is tied to the liberation of men as my dear friend Liz Plank says in her book ‘For the Love of Men.’ I hope that it inspires an individual man to recognize some of the ways they’ve been socialized and have hurt people and themselves and I hope it also inspires women. I’ve heard it helps women have a new understanding of what it looks like to be a man and a boy in the world. LATM: When you have time off where do you like to escape to? JB: A beach. Anywhere with warm sun and beach and water. EB: And for me, it would be the mountains. JB: That's why we moved to the mountains, so that WE can escape to the beach. EB: But I think any kind of escape for us is nature. Nature is a dream escape. LATM: Any tips you have learned over the course of your travels you can share with our readers?

JB: To go with the flow. EB: I was just going to say this is where you and I travel so well together. I’m a great planner. Justin just goes with the flow, does not like a plan. BUT and this is what’s great, when you meet in the middle and kind of have a plan and then you’re willing to go with the flow, that’s the dream spot. JB: I think the best travel advice we could ever give someone is when you’re regimented and you’re traveling it sucks the fun out of it. EB: It really does, yeah. JB: Like life, it’s about the journey. The point of traveling is about the journey. EB: Not the destination after JB: If you’re so uptight and worried about everything and every detail of the trip and getting to a certain place on time, you’re taking away that excitement and openness. EB: And the Magic. JB: And the magic to explore and have a great time on the journey itself. So its never about the destination, it’s about the journey. LATM: What are your next big goals for 2021-2022? JB: We’re both really excited about Emily’s company, AMMA. EB: That we are both co-founders of. It’s a company for mamma’s a lifestyle brand for Momma. We’re super excited to be growing and adding more products and have some fun with that company. JB: And building a community of Momma’s. JB: I’m also excited for Wayfarer Studios. We’re producing a few films this summer. And we’re financing these movies and we’re really excited about them and I’m excited about hopefully directing another film later this year!

Spiritual Wandering in Lithuania By Lithuania Travel

KNOWN FOR ITS RICH RELIGIOUS HERITAGE, LITHUANIA INVITES TRAVELERS TO EXPLORE THE SPIRITUAL SITES THROUGHOUT THE COUNTRY

Religious tourism involves going on pilgrimages, as well as visiting religious monuments and artifacts. Though such a type of travelling has been around for ages, nowadays it is getting more popular as people discover new, previously unexplored spiritual destinations. While Lithuania, a culturally and historically diverse nation, was the last one in Europe to embrace Christianity in the 14th century, visitors can find many spiritual sites scattered all across the country. Here are some new yet undiscovered destinations to add to your bucket list for your next spiritual adventure. From the Little Vatican to an underwater cross to a church in a tree, here are 8 undiscovered religious relics found in Lithuania .

1. Lifted from the bottom of the lagoon. St. Michael Archangel Church of Rumšiškės (Kaišiadorys district) The famous wooden church in Rumšiškės has seen it all. After standing in the town of Old Rumšiškės for nearly a century, in 1958-1959 the church, along with the bell tower, was moved from the bottom of the future Kaunas Lagoon to a new place—the upper Nemunas terrace. In the end, the flooding of the Nemunas riverbed submerged about 40 villages and over 700 homesteads. Nowadays, the church holds celebrations to honor the inhabitants of the flooded villages. 2. The tallest cross in Lithuania (Šilalė district) One of the most visited areas in the surroundings of Kaltinėnai is the Spiritual Park. Home to the Chapel of the St. Virgin Mary, the park also features the Calvaries of the Exiles—a group of 21 sculptures that commemorate the exiles. Alongside the sculpture ensemble, on a big hill, stands the 20-meter-high Cross of Resurrection. Built in 1990, it represents the country's independence and is the tallest cross in Lithuania.

3. Near one of the oldest cemeteries in Lithuania. Beržoras St. Stanislaus Church (Plungė district) The 15th century street church village has two main religious objects – the St. Stanislaus Church building complex (the St. Stanislaus Church, bell tower and chapel) and the 14 Stations of the Cross chapels. It is said that a shepherd came across a painting of the Holy Virgin Mary hanging in a treetop. Priests brought the painting down and took it to the Plateliai church. However, the painting disappeared from the church and reappeared in the same place in the treetop. According to the legend, it was then decided to build a new church on this spot where the painting would reappear. The old Plateliai parish cemetery in the churchyard is considered one of the oldest cemeteries in Lithuania. 4. Krekenava Basilica of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary and its replica in a tree (Panevėžys district) It is the only daughter shrine—a filial church— of the Roman Basilica of St. Mary Major in Lithuania. It contains a miraculous painting of the Mother of God and Child, which has been an object of worship and respect for centuries. On a regular day, the priests cover it by the Romanas Švoinickis painting “Christ Teaches the Children of Lithuania”, often called “Christ

among the Krekenava Residents”, because it immortalizes the citizens of the town. The replica of the basilica, built by a Krekenava local, can be found in a tree in Švenčiuliškių Street. 5. One of the most modern in the world. Elektrėnai Catholic Church of Mary, the Queen of Martyrs (Elektrėnai) A semi-circular portal, consisting of a rectangular arch with a cross and six vertical doubled crosses. The building of exceptional architecture near the Vilnius-Kaunas highway makes an extraordinary impression and helps thoughts lift into the sky. The story goes that the architects and builders of the church had to repeatedly overcome the resistance of gravity and materials in order to build this spiritual destination. 6. Tours in the Little Vatican. Five Kretinga monasteries (Kretinga) Kretinga is called the Little Vatican for a reason—the city is home to five distinct monasteries, all telling unique stories. Visitors can go on themed tours and meet the nuns, visit the tower of the Church of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the inner yard of the monastery and the Chapel of the Martyrs. Tourists also learn more about the history of the origin of the monasteries and the churches, the miracles have made the St. Anthony altar famous, as well as the routines the monks follow.

7. The cross at the bottom of Lake Plateliai (Plungė district) The cross, consecrated by the Franciscan monks of Kretinga, is on the Kryžiavonė Hill several meters deep in the middle of Lake Plateliai and can be seen by taking one of the offered diving centre routes. According to the Franciscan brothers, who lowered the cross underwater in 2005, they directly interpreted the words of Pope John Paul II who said that in order to discover the essence of the cross it is crucial to get to the depths. 8. Where the mummies rest. Liškiava Monastery (Varėna district) A special place in Dzūkija for people searching for spiritual experiences can be reached by sailing the Nemunas River from Druskininkai. The Liškiava Church and Dominican Monastery Complex on the steep Nemunas bank is a 17th-18th century architectural monument. Throughout the 1990-1997 period, the Liškiava Church of the Holy Trinity was restored and a museum with the mummified remains of the Dominican monks was established in its cellars. Interestingly, the church has a 19th century organ, which Konstantinas Čiurlionis, the father of the famous composer Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis, used.

CAPTIVA ISLAND,

THE PERFECT FLORIDA FAMILY GETAWAY By Melissa Curtin Due to its perfect weather all year long and a wide range of activities, a well-known escape for many couples and families in the Northeast is Captiva Island located on the Gulf of Mexico, an hour west of Ft. Myers in Southwest Florida. No boat is required. Once you pass the Blind Pass Bridge, you have entered Captiva. The South Seas Island Resort takes up more than half of the northern part of the island. A 330-acre destination beach resort, South Seas Island Resort on Captiva Island is near sister island Sanibel - a result of the 1921 hurricane dividing the land. Once a former Key Lime Plantation before opening to guests in 1946 as a fishing resort, the land feels Caribbean-like with 2.5 miles of natural soft pristine white sand cascading full of seashells and numerous bird species.

Bottle-nosed dolphins are a common sight so close to shore while “snowbirds” or older retirees are often wading in the ocean with a Sand Dipper known as the Beachcomber Scooper, collecting pearly perfectly shaped shells – some 250 types found here. The resort village, a protected wildlife sanctuary, has no buildings taller than the trees. Each morning and at sunset, we observed manatees in the harbor, apparently attracted to warm freshwater. Guests can hop on a free trolley or rent a golf cart at South Seas Island Resort. It is easy to cruise around the mangrovelined streets and admire the natural beauty, pick your beach of the day, stop for a decadent dessert at the hokey Bubble Room, or meander around the colorful pastel homes all with their

own unique names like Lollipop, Aloha Baby, Green Flash and Pelican Anchor. With more than 20 miles of bike paths, fishing experiences galore, watersports, and 20 pools total (including 3 main pools and waterslides), South Seas Island Resort is a playground for all ages. You may wish to just rest in your Harbourside guestroom balcony or spacious South Seas condo complete with peaceful waterfront scenery. Captiva feels safe at all times and no matter if you come for a romantic interlude or with the entire family, it is an ideal location for all ages - to do nothing or everything.

A morning Eco Kayak tour through mangroves let us connect with nature as birds soared around us. Parked near a sandbar, we discovered shells with creatures inside, a turtle vertebra, a polka-dotted crab, a sea anemone sucking nutrients from shells, and a starfish. On any given day, gliding dolphins, manatees, and stingrays may be part of your paddle. Sailing lessons are also available with the on-site offshore sailing school aboard Colgate 26 and 40 – 50 foot yachts for 2 and 5-day courses or 7-day liveaboard or resort-based courses for certification.

Wildlife and Water Adventures Besides collecting the island’s natural unique seashells (which is still allowed in this part of the world) and sunning yourself on the beach, the best place to be is on the water. Book a water adventure, such as fishing, paddleboarding through the back bays, and parasailing over the islands. Take a wave runner tour with the property’s Sunny Island Adventures to Cayo Costa and explore the many mangroves, smaller islands, and fishing shacks that aren’t accessible any other way. The 75-minute tour is only a bit more cost-wise than renting a wave runner on your own and includes informative education on the many sights off the Captiva coast.

If you visit between May 1 to October 31, you may find yourself lucky enough to be part of turtle nesting season where hatchlings find their way back to the water. At night the baby turtles hatch when the moon is bright and when they are ready, the baby turtles follow the moonlight to head back to the Gulf of Mexico. You may see their tracks on your early morning beach walk. Improve your Swing Also, while on land, South Seas Island guests can perfect their swing – whether that be golf or tennis. Book a fun lesson or clinic at the property’s Blackwood Tennis Academy designed

for all levels from beginners to pros on the resort’s 7 hard courts, 4 lit for evening play. Improve your game with pointers from stance to racket placement with a lesson from pro Nick Blackwood himself. Swing your golf club beachside at the resort’s 9-hole, par-27 executive course designed by Chip Powell along the Gulf of Mexico while on nearby Sanibel Island golf lovers can play at The Dune Golf & Tennis Club, which provides an 18-hole championship golf course, driving range, and lessons. Dine on the Property Numerous restaurant options can be found at South Seas Island Resort. Overlooking the Yacht Harbor and Marina, South Seas’ signature restaurant Harbourside Bar & Grill Patio serves seafood risotto, charred octopus, a tuna poke tower, crab cakes, and a $45 cracked lobster pasta with black truffles. The menu is not inexpensive but the portions are huge. Try the Lemongrass Mule, the blackened grouper, and corn and crab chowder. And if you hook it, they will cook it, but you can also just sidle on in for fresh-caught fish like Cajun snapper, pan-seared tuna, and Florida Gulf grouper. End an evening here by making S’mores in their firepit under the stars. This same spot offers generous breakfast portions with scrumptious choices like shrimp and grits, biscuits and gravy, and corned beef hash.

At the resort pool complex, The Pointe is a casual spot to savor a grouper sandwich, fish tacos, fresh salads, fried coconut shrimp, and Captain Al’s cheeseburger plus frozen drinks are aplenty with names like The Lava Flow made with Cruzan rum, pina colada, strawberry and a Myer’s dark rum floater. For a quick pizza slice or ice cream cone, stop by the 1950s themed diner Scoops and Slices that even boasts a floor-to-ceiling candy wall. At sunset, the brightly colored beachside shack (known as Attitudes Beach Bar) is the place to be for a frozen cocktail on the resort’s west-facing Sunset Beach. Watch nature’s hues splash across the oceanfront that just might resemble your Guava Mamma with mango guava puree and guava Cruzan rum. If you feel like cooking or picking up some local specialty items, don’t miss the Tuesday seasonal farmer’s market from 9 am – 1 pm offering produce, baked goods, seafood, smoothies, jewelry, Italian pasta, coffee from Jimmy’s Java, and more. One truck sold the fresh catch of the day with options like red grouper, red snapper, yellowtail snapper, Jumbo Gulf pink shrimp, Stone crab, and alligator point clams. No matter what your vacation mood, Captiva Island is ideal for couples and families who want to deeply relax but also has many easily accessible recreational activities available.

Copal resin is often used by Mayan healers as a diagnostic tool to help see the deeper dimensions of a person’s energy field to detect energy blockages and diseases. Following this ritual, Chablé’s healers will be able to decipher the state of the guests’ body and immune system and fine-tune the best treatments for the individual during their stay. The program will also include a guided water ceremony, where exposure to various temperatures has life-enhancing qualities including increasing blood circulation and reducing muscle tension, as well as a ‘Coco Skin Treatment’ which uses ingredients rich in antioxidants which are essential for boosting the immune system. Following treatments, guests are encouraged to enjoy a turmeric tea with lemon grass ginger and local honey to complete the detox. 112

STRESS AND ANXIETY PROGRAM: The pandemic has caused a significant amount of stress and anxiety to individuals around the world. Working from home has caused people to ‘burn out’, having not managed to schedule breaks and achieve a good work/life balance. Chablé’s program targets travelers seeking a retreat that will help restore their work/life balance and alleviate stress. Example treatments include ‘Floatation Therapy’ at Chablé Yucatan. Floating is scientifically proven to increase mental and physical wellbeing in as little as an hour. The therapy is extremely effective in releasing physical tension as well as stress accumulated over months; it raises endorphin levels

and rejuvenates the mind and body. Guests reach a deep state of relaxation which is equivalent to eight hours of the deepest sleep. Meanwhile at Chablé Maroma, the ‘Tree of Life Massage’, soothes an over-stressed nervous system, clears the mind, eases muscle tension, and restores internal balance. Further highlights include a ‘Bio-Energy Remineralising Facial’ which provides instant skin rejuvenation by accelerating cellular respiration, bringing fatigued, overstressed skin back to life. Both hotels also offer a ‘Stress Relief Treatment’, this unique massage is designed to work on specific zones with the highest accumulation of stress: the back, shoulders, and neck. The program also includes plenty of mindfulness and yoga/meditation classes as well as the option for a full digital detox. Chablé also encourages participants to partake in their morning breathing classes which helps to bring awareness to the present moment, encouraging guests to break their usual habit of checking their phones and laptops first thing. The aim is to reset the

guest’s routine and create a healthy schedule that can be implemented at home. HEALING HEARTACHE PROGRAM: This program has been designed for individuals experiencing heartache, due to the breakdown of a long-term relationship. All treatments and activities have been tailored to focus on finding an inner connection and increasing self-worth. During their stay, guests will learn to put themselves first, treat themselves and experience new things. The ‘You are the Love Story’ retreat includes daily sunrise and sunset yoga (vinyasa, prana or hatha) on the beach at Chablé Maroma and in the jungle at Chablé Yucatan. These sessions focus on gratitude and self-love, ensuring guests begin and finish the day in a positive state of mind. This program is inspired by the ocean. The ocean constantly releases and let’s go, washing away old patterns, and allowing for something new to start. Chablé believes that those experiencing heartache must learn to do the same. Treatments within the retreat include a ‘Sound of the Sea Ritual’ featuring a seaweed wrap and a warming sea

fennel massage and a ‘Rain Goddess’ ritual designed to refresh and heal the body both physically and emotionally. This experience includes a full-body exfoliation, symbolising the scrubbing away of the past, followed by a remedy which beautifies and rejuvenates the skin, signifying a new chapter. A further highlight is the ‘Chablé Janzu Water Massage’; guests are immersed in the outdoor pool overlooking the cenote whilst a therapist works to release blocked energy and promote a state of relaxation. The water is known to encourage and intensify the release of the soul. The grand finale is Chablé ’s Temazcal Ceremony. Temazcal means “steam house” and is a ritual based on one of the oldest forms of medicine where the physical, mental and spiritual levels come together. The medicine of the Temazcal benefits the body’s systems and energies which promotes an inner connection, creating a transformative effect, a mystical encounter and a feeling of rebirth. The Temazcal promises to reconnect participants with a positive life path, leaving past heartache behind. 113

The Wine Rankings are In By Brenda Ryan/LawnStarter

Planning a Wine Country Escape this summer? LawnStarter has ranked the top California Wine Counties for visiting nearby wineries or sampling some primo vino. Check out the list wine counties in the Golden State below, followed by some highlights and lowlights.

THE TOP 10 1. Napa County 2. Temecula County 3. Sonoma County 4. San Joaquin County 5. Yolo County

ENDLESS SUMMER 2021

6. Solano County 7. San Luis Obispo County 8. Alameda County 9. Sacramento County 10. Marin County

Highlights and Lowlights: Napa Wins by a Sommelier's Nose: Napa County is no surprise really as our top pick for the number one spot. The county leads in the accessibility category of our rankings, meaning the number of wine producers, blenders, and attractions nearby. For fans of the reds, whites, and pinks, Napa and neighboring Sonoma County, which finished No. 3 overall — have so many wine producers there’s a wine for every taste and price. Plus there are many wine-related activities too. Visit the wineries, tour the vineyards, or stay overnight where the grapes are pressed — for vinophiles, Napa and Sonoma will put you on cloud wine. A Time of Wine and Rosés: Counties like Temecula Valley (No. 2 overall), San Joaquin (No. 4), Yolo (No. 5), and Solano (No. 6) shine as hidden gems for wine aficionados. These counties are off the beaten path compared to Napa and Sonoma, meaning their wineries are less busy and nearby accommodations are more charming.

with San Francisco and Los Angeles finishing at numbers 22 and 28, respectively. Why aren’t California’s more urban areas among the Best California Wine Counties? Land costs, lodging expenses, restaurants — everything costs more in bigger cities, but there’s also so much more to do in metro areas. Savoring great wines often takes a backseat to visiting theme parks, movie studios, and natural wonders like redwoods. Yes, 2020’s wildfires ravaged California’s wine country, and COVID-19 tested winery owners, but many are bouncing back better than ever. When you think of wine counties, wine tours and even awardwinning wines, do you think of regions of Oregon, Washington State, Texas or Arizona? You should. This analysis of the best wine counties outside California found wine counties dot the U.S. map. That means some of the best wineries to visit are often much closer to home.

Being off the beaten path makes for a cozy, romantic wine getaway — a time of wine and rosés — if you live near these counties in California. Lodging is more affordable than in the big wine meccas, too.

To help rank the best wine counties across the United States, LawnStarter compared more than 1,048 counties across 18 key relevant metrics.

Guests will love the property's proximity to local landmarks like Vinoy Park, Tropicana Field, and The Florida Aquarium. To be honest, you couldn't ask for a better location to call home during your stay in one of Florida's best beach cities, you can walk anywhere worth visiting. Downtown St. Pete is the city's heart, home to excellent shopping, unique restaurants, lively bars and cultural attractions. This 361-room hotel sits adjacent to the waterfront and as you enter the lobby you instantly pay notice to the gorgeous architecture that welcomes you and sets the first impression. The hotel has a rich past and according to the archives, the hotel began with a bet. The rest, as they say, is history. In 1923, it all started with a party, a bet, and a game of golf at the St. Petersburg Beach Drive home of Aymer Vinoy Laughner, a wealthy Pennsylvania businessman. Famed golfer Walter Hagen drove several golf balls off the face of his host's prized pocket watch. The wager: whether the watch's crystal would survive Hagen's powerful drive. It did, and the golf balls landed across Beach Drive on a residential waterfront property. After party guests suggested he purchase the property and build a grand resort under his name, Laughner acquired the land for $170,000. Led by architect Henry L. Taylor and contractor George A. Miller, construction for The Vinoy Park Hotel began on February 5, 1925. The contractor set a construction record for completing the 375-room hotel in just under 10 months, in time for a grand opening on New Year's Eve 1925. From the time it opened at the dawn of 1926 until today, this timeless infrastructure still impresses with its lofty pedigree. For the past 85 years, the property has been well known as a place to enjoy the good life with family and friends. Amenities include 18 hole Ron Garl-designed championship golf course for those looking to perfect their swing throughout their stay, a salon and day spa, a health club and over 60,000 square feet of meeting space. For dining stop by Paul’s Landing to enjoy local seafood and international dishes and if you don't have time for a restaurant meal, The Veranda Café is the perfect choice for a quick bite. Framed by golf course views, The Vinoy Club Grill has been beautifully reimagined and serves weekend breakfast, daily lunch and dinner. Luxury rooms and suites retain the historic glamour and charisma with modern-day amenities including flat-screen TVs and well-lit workspaces, and uber comfortable beds with plush linens. It is safe to say, if you are looking for a quintessential Floridian stay you couldn't ask for a better location than The Vinoy; from its unbridled historic past to its idealistic waterfront views coupled with today's modern luxuries, you are guaranteed the perfect stay!
