editor's note The world is a large and dynamic place, but it is filled with simplicity. For example, sunny days and sunday breakfasts. It is simple things such as these that bring us together and make life special. However, it is important to remember that these simplicities exist in other places as well. The world is full of different cultures and customs, but in a way this unifies the human race. No matter how far you travel, people will always enjoy the warmth of familiarity. Even though the sun may rise at a different time and the dishes may not be the same, the importance of simplicity remains a constant throughout the world. This issue brings cultures from around the world into your backyard using everyone’s favorite method, food. Our chef has provided a tasty article on how to prepare delicious strawberry and blackberry pancakes in the comfort of your own kitchen. This dish gives you a taste of French cuisine by combining popular French fruits with the classic American flapjack. We have also provided reviews on great international breakfast spots around Charleston.

FEATURES

Fraise Et La Mure Pancakes Everyone loves a good breakfast in the morning, but we don’t always know how to get there. It’s hard to figure out what the perfect meal is and how to make it. Don’t worry, we have the perfect thing for you. Today we will be discussing how to make grand pancakes, straight from france, in your own kitchen. We have selected scrumptious strawberry and blackberry pancakes!

CHARLESTON FOOD 6

INGREDIENTS 1 ½ cup of all-purpose flour 3 ½ teaspoons of baking powder 1 teaspoon of salt 1 tablespoon of white sugar 1 ¼ cups of milk 1 egg 3 tablespoons of melted butter Powered Sugar (optional) Mint Leaves (optional) CHARLESTON FOOD 7

MATERIALS large bowl sifter (optional, but recommended) frying pan spatula ladle

PROCEDURE First we need to mix our materials in the large mixing bowl. We will start by sifting the flour into the bowl (if you don’t have a sifter than just pour the flour into the bowl). Next, with all our flour sifted, we will make a well in our flour. To do this you need to press a cavity into the center of the flour around the size of a ping pong or golf ball. After making our cozy little well, we can start putting in our other ingredients. Begin by pouring the milk into the well, then add in the egg and melted butter. Mix it all up until it is smooth. Now it’s time to add the strawberries and blackberries. Since we don’t want chunky pieces in our pancakes messing up their goodness, we are going to slice and dice our fruits.

CHARLESTON FOOD 8

Pro tip...if you plan on adding strawberries and blackberries as decor, leave some extra on the side. Also, make sure youhave enough fruits before you start cutting. After your delicious berries are added into your mix, spoon a dollop of batter onto lightly oiled pan using your ladle and set the burner to medium heat. Make sure that both side of your pancakes are a nice golden brown. Now, if you want, you can add some decor using your leftover berries and those sweet little mint leaves. Sprinkle on some powdered sugar and you are done with your perfect french pancakes. The kind of pancakes that make you feel like a professional french chef has just cooked in your kitchen.

We guarantee that this will be one of the best dishes you’ll ever bake. For an even better addition to this grand meal we recommend using Fraises de Plougastel. They are the best strawberries you can get, and come straight from France, all natural.

All of the ingredients we use are naturally made. The mint leaves are grown in our staff’s personal garden! Hopefully you will enjoy this delicious meal just as much as we do and have a grand rest of the day due to this wonderful breakfast!

Briezh Pan Crepes

Queen Street Grocery

Breizh pan crepes, with a title like that how straight forward can you get? At this restaurant their main meals and all they serve are crêpes, specially made in the place where they are best made Brittany, France. The owners of this place moved all the way from Brittany to here just to sell their amazing crêpes. Of course, how could they make the best of it without a breakfast meal. The one I recommend the most is a special buckwheat made crêpe with ham and eggs for the ingredients, the way it lands the perfect sweet and savory touch every person needs for breakfast is truly amazing! Not only do they have the simple breakfast items, but many more. They have all the sweet options you can get with a plentiful amount of fruit, and the most delicious savory crêpes, you could ever see in the low country! Out of all the crêpe places out there, this is one of the best, even run by a simple husband and wife, so it makes you feel right at home. The only bad thing I have to say about this place is that they should have more seats available, that way they could have a herd of customers everyday! The only rating I can give a place like this, is a five out of five hearts, they know what they’re doing! For more information on what they’re doing, check out their site at breizhpancrepes.com!

Need a nice place with a little bit of natural everything, well we found it! Queen Street Grocery is a lovely quaint, street corner shop that shines a light in a little bit of everything they got, including breakfast. Their styles come from all over, but work out nicely in the end, for the breakfast piece I would definitely recommend the Archdale. The ingredients include spinach, grilled mushrooms, tomato, and eggs. Although the ingredients sound a bit odd, when they are placed all together, all inside a lovely crêpe, boy do they taste great! Not only does their crêpe taste great, they also have lovely omelettes where you can even choose what you would like inside, how great is that? Along with all these fine items, you can get some lovely sandwiches, even for breakfast! That’s right, at Queen Street Grocery, you can get lovely breakfast items like bacon or ham, swiss or cheddar, and even some eggs, added together to make a lovely breakfast sandwich all to your design, you can even pick the type of bread. With such a great place, even using all natural pieces, who wouldn’t give this place a five out of five hearts! If you would like to get to know more about this food wonderland, check out their site at queenstreetgrocerycafe.com.

Saveur Du Monde

Hot Little Biscuit

When it comes to getting some good allrounder french breakfast food, the best place to go is to Saveur du Monde. Saveur du Monde is a french pastry shop that serves breakfast as well, and boy do they know breakfast. The top food that I would recommend to eat would be the french toast. Their french toast is made with all natural ingredients, cooked to perfection. After they make in nicely they add the perfect amount of true maple syrup and top it with lovely powdered sugar. After that they top it with their own homemade whipped cream. Not only with that grand piece of french toast, but it also comes with a natural serving of fruit salad for a side. Now of course the breakfast here is great, but what else would be great to get? Their lovely pastries! Usually when thinking of breakfast, pastries aren’t the first that come to mind, but to get the pastries here, I would trade it in for breakfast anyday. Now although we’re talking about all their good sides, we do, sadly, have some bad ends. Although the pastries are to die for, their crêpes, aren’t necessarily the best. They aren’t particularly bad either, but to say, they are around as good as the ones at IHOP. The service, on the other hand, is great! It makes you feel like you’re part of a big family! Listing all the good and bad about this place we might as well give out the rating. I have to say with all put together, it would be four hearts out of five. A little touch up on those crêpes and they are all good. For more information go to their website at saveurdumondecafe.com.

Of course, after traveling the world of food, one cannot forget to check around their own neighborhood. Just a quick peek around the corner and you’ll find the true traditional charleston style bakery Hot Little Biscuit. Hot Little Biscuit is a nice little place named by the New York Times, Oprah, and many other widely known places as one of the best of its kind. At Hot Little Biscuit, what else are you going to expect, than a lovely biscuit. What they sell here are around the clock type of biscuits, so that of course, includes breakfast! Out of their lovely options, you can either go with the classic brand of biscuit flavors or their filled ones. For now I will just give a recommendation for each. For the classic, I would recommend their shortcake biscuits, sweet and lovely and makes you feel like you could hum with angels, that is truly a great biscuit. For the filled type I would go with the cinnamon filled, but I must say all it does is bring the best flavor you can get with a simple mixing of cinnamon and biscuits. Although the brand is all biscuits, you can get some simple side items to go along with the wide variety of their biscuits as well. For the ratings, although they have a wide variety for all around, I would like a bit more added to their sweet biscuits, simply stated because that’s the best way I know how to eat a biscuit. When it come down to it, I would have to give them a four out of five hearts, hopefully they could add a bit more for that little sweet tooth of mine.
