Parti- Volume Support Structure 006

The High Line Archive Library - New York, NY

The library is designed as large, stereotomic, concrete shell that protects the rare books within it. Inside of the massive exterior is a delicate glass volume that houses the rare books. The volume punctures through the levels and is suspended from a structure in the ceiling of the 8th level. The structure cuts through the exterior walls of the building creating voids and allowing light to penetrate the spaces around it. The top floor of the building has a glass floor allowing visitors of the building to walk above the structure and look down to get a unique perspective + understanding of the function of the structure + its relationship to the volume.

Fire Supression System 028

The High Line Archive Library - New York, NY

Fire Supression System 029

The High Line Archive Library - New York, NY

Pre-action Fire Sprinkler System System Type: Double interlock pre-action Maximum spacing: 12-16 feet. The double interlock pre-action system uses a deluge valve, air or gas is kept pressurized within the sprinkler piping until such time as a sprinkler is activated. If this pressure drop is accompanied by a tripping of the fire detection system, then the valve will open to deliver water through the piping to the activated sprinkler or sprinklers. Should only one of these conditions be met, the valve will remain closed to prevent accidental tripping. The pressurized system offers the additional benefit of providing warning about any leaks in the piping. Advantages of using pre-action fire sprinkler systems include: The dual action required for water release - The pre-action valve must operate and sprinkler heads must fuse. This feature provides an added level of protection against inadvertent discharge. For this reason, pre-action systems are frequently employed in water sensitive environments such as archival vaults, fine art storage rooms, rare book libraries and computer centers.

Glass

Steel stringer + Railings Comparitive stair assembly example No Lamination No more unsightly lamination lines, thanks to ThinkGlass and the cutting-edge innovation of their polished edge, glass treads can finally show the real beauty of pure glass Strong and Durable Glass is strong and durable. In fact, 1.5-inch glass treads are up to three times stronger than granite or stone, and they can bear a load of 1800 lbs. at the center of a 36-inch wide tread. All ThinkGlass treads pass mandated strength requirement tests and are laminated on the underside with an invisible safety film for extra security. Slip Resistant Glass steps are slip resistant. An embedded texture provides an anti-skid surface that is scratch- proof and easily hides any smudges or streaks. ThinkGlass stair treads exceed current standards for “coefficient of friction requirements as specified by ASTM section c1028, Underwriters Laboratories UL-410, and ADA. Eco-Friendly Glass is an eco-friendly option. ThinkGlass designs are 100% fully recyclable. They are radon free, have no negative impact on air quality, and qualify for points under LEED and NAHB building guidelines. ThinkGlass also use eco-friendly production practices with a strong commitment to sustainability and good working conditions. Hygienic Glass is naturally hygienic. Because glass is a non-porous substance, it offers no crevices to harbor mold or bacteria. Treads are easily cleaned and require no special sealants or chemical treatments.

LIGHT Glass allows light to flow through the stairs, creating a very airy and luxurious dwelling. As natural light permeates the space, it produces different moods and forms a seamless transition between rooms. Glass can also be used in landings and “see-through from one floor to another to add even more visual interest and drama. Glass makes a dramatic entrance. A staircase is a natural architectural centerpiece and often makes the first impression as one enters a home or business.

Glass treads can be illuminated through the use of artifical + natural light

The 9th level, Gallery space, has glass flooring across the entire level. The floor allows patrons to look down at the level below. The transparent flooring gives people the ability to walk above the suspended archive volume and structure to get a unique perspective of how the structure functions. The floor extends to the wall on the High Line side. This wall cantilevers over the lower wall. This feature allows users to stand over the High Line, looking down and out from 85’ above High Line level. The glass flooring also offers a unique lighting condition, creating a space where the natural light comes from below rather than above.

Laminated glass flooring is produced by bonding two or more layers of heat treated pressured glass together with a plastic resin interlayer, which is known as Polyvinyl Butyral (PVB). The PVB interlayer makes glass floors impervious to water damage, it offers sound reduction and blocks 99% of UV rays. PVB interlayers can be customized into different colored sheets to be used by glass manufactures for architects and construction engineers. The best way to lay a laminated glass floor is by using block pavers with an aluminum grid. This newer method encases the sides and bottom edges of each glass paver block with a silicone sealant rather than the original method of using grout. The aluminum grid provides durability and reinforcement for foot traffic, as well as offering a unique element to an interior design. Glass flooring is available in several different options including crystal clear which is transparent, frost, revo, small rocks and sand. These options provide different levels of translucency and privacy, yet natural lighting can still filter in. Glass floor technology is safe, secure, quake proof, can handle all day foot traffic and shatterproof. Its aesthetics and its sanitary ability to repel dust, mold, bacteria and requires less cleaning than other floor materials.
