intro I BELIEVE THAT ARCHITECTURE IS AN ART OF CREATING EMOTIONS. ARCHITECTURE CREATES SPACES AND SPACES UNLEASH EMOTIONS. I SEE EVERY BUILDING OR BUILT ENVIRONMENT AS A CONVERSATION TO SURROUNDING AREA AND PEOPLE WHO EXPERIENCE IT. tHEREFORE I BELIEVE THAT CONTEXT IS ONE OF THE MOST IMOPORTANT ASPECTS OF ARCHITECTURE. ARCHITECTURE IS EXPERIENCED USING ALL FIVE SENSES THEREFORE I THINK THAT MATERIALITY AND DETAILING ARE THOSE WHO HELPS TO CREATE PROPER SCALE SPACES FOR PEOPLE. ARCHITECTURE IS ABOUT PEOPLE AND THAT IS THE BEAUTY OF IT.

Different extension possibilitites Project has been elaborated during my studies in Norwegian University of Science and Technoogy together with architecture students Sophie Achard and Rania Daher. Year 2010. Location: China, Shaanxi Province, Xi’an city, Han Chang’an heritage site Han dynasty city wall (~2000 years old) and Wei Yang Palace wall cross the village, but there are only few marks in the village. However the structure of the village today is interesting and marks much more recent past. Together with strong sense of community and active socialization on streets this village demonstrates values and in our project is considered as important as the other historical layer. A project to develop city gate on the North of the village has been elaborated by government. It suggests to demolish area in the middle of the village to show both walls by reconstructing them. Our project seeks to combine and strengthen both layers of history. The village could use the development connected with the gate project to gain benefits and tourism. In the same time small, more human scale of the village would enlighten majesty and greatness of past architecture’s scale which could be otherwise hard to understand because of lack of reference. Our project seeks to improve public spaces in the area and creates more places where locals and tourists can interact and meet, because we beleive that this area can be a place for permanent living not only a stepping stone on the way to “living in the city”. To mark the city wall we are using the “negative of the wall” and creating a new pedestrian street on the place were the ancient wall was. We open some of the courtyards thus creating some social rooms or gardens, places to hide along the street. To mark the palace wall we use the shape of it in new construction. We design the central square to create it more people friendly and place for everyone to meet. As we change the orientation of the square and place it along the main street, it becomes a connection between both walls. The square is designed in different levels in order to reveal the original city wall that lies below the ground level.

Project has been elaborated during my studies in Norwegian University of Science and Technoogy together with architecture students Elena Avila Serrano, Teresa Lizondo Gisbert, Teresa Saldanha. Location: Schlieren (near zurich), Switzerland During our analysis in Schlieren we have discovered wide diversity of materials, scales and spaces. The differences appears not only in builе environment but in green areas as well. We have discovered that the diversity of spaces is something that is precious for Schlieren because it reveals all developement layers - starting with small country village growing into industrial area. The idea of the project is inspired in the place and has developed starting with small things found on site. As a tool to gain our aims we have developed “ways” that connects north and South side of railway. The way in our project means an experience or a journey through city. The way consists of spaces ( the potencial places and new developement) and connectors. The project’s development starts with finding places we believe is worth keeping. We investigate the site and then using good things we have found develope a strategy or programme for each area in this way reactivating specific territory. Depending on concentration of spaces and taking into consideration crossings over railway or river we mark the ways using connectors. Connectors are objects or elements that are common in all the way and invites people to follow. While we develope (potencial) places and connectors we find areas where new development can take place and densify the built environment of Schlieren. We believe that our project that has grew starting with things already there would trigger a further development and would create a city more attractive and suitable for living and relaxing.

model of developed station / bridge in Urban way changed situation - bridge that is improved for pedestrians We have elaborated three ways connecting north and South of railway in Schlieren to ensure equal development of all area. As well we believe that creating three ways will activate whole city and not only one part of it. Each of it has different character (atmosphere) depending on perception and activities found already there. We believe that creating concentrated activities on each way ensures that all of them will be used and it will be more comfortable for citizens of Schlieren to choose were to spend the time - in green outdoor spaces or in a concert of local artists. In West part of Schlieren we have created a “Joggling way” ( ). Joggling because it gives an association with free time activities, sports, hobbies. In this part of the city we are creating places to do all those things in open air. We create the atmosphere using green spaces already there (river, housing in the green) and connecting them with green corridor. The pavements of this way are suited for slow walks as well as fast skateboard rides. Our way crosses railway creating new connection between north and South of the city. In the crossing of river we use old railway bridge and widen it so that pedestrians and bicycle riders can cross. In the center of city of Schlieren we have found the biggest number of potential places and most diverse ones as well. Here is located one of the most important places in city - the station, which now has a lack of attractivness. In this “Urban” way ( ) we have found the most conrasting perceptions as well (new development next to old glue factory, train station next to private house surrounded with old, big trees, etc.). As this way crosses the old city center and connects it to new development areas in the north of railway we believe that this is the place for highest density activities in the city. In the Eastern part of Schlieren we have created “Cultural way”( ). Way connects the old gas factory converted to art and music center with auto cluster - new showrooms for existing auto companies. The connector in this way is street art which can be created by citizens of Schlieren together with professional artists.

Project has been elaborated together with architecture student Didzis Jaunzems in 4th year of architecture studies in Riga Technical University. Year 2009. The task was to make a proposal of future development of Daugavgriva area. Daugavgriva is situated near Riga city center and is surrounded from three sides with natural values – national park, the river Daugava and the river Bullupe. At the moment area is functioning as “sleeping district” of Riga, is lacking of identity and potential of area’s site is not being used sufficiently. Idea: The main street of Daugavgriva - Parades street as conjunctive element that joins area instead of separating it in two parts. Parades street is a linear structure centre of area where main public life is concentrated. On the opposite sides of the street different public activities are organised (cafe-restaurant, football-basketball etc.) in this way supporting people’s movement around whole area of Daugavgriva (magnet principle). Various public activities are placed in urban “pockets” around Parades street according to their necessity for sun light (market-morning sun, restaurant-evening sun, etc.) Principle of placing higher buildings near Parades street and lower buildings near the river and the sea enables view to the waterfront from various locations of the area. New and old buildings around Parades street are organised in a way to create noise buffer zone towards the surrounding area. Structure of roads create mutual comfortable vehicle and pedestrian movement.

Project has been elaborated together with architecture students Didzis Jaunzems and Davis Gertners and is a part of Bachelor project. Year 2008. The task was to design a proposal of development in former industrial area near Riga city center. The main function of the territory should be residential but other functions should be also added to make the area more attractive and sustainable. Idea: Develope a multifunctional urban territory with high density and space for residents’ recreation and social activities. High quality architectural heritage is preserved in the center of area. In these buildings public functions such as cafes, shops restaurants etc. are located. In this way the heritage is easily accessible to everyone and makes unique public space for citizens of Riga. In the crossroads of main pedestrian streets - promenade near zunda channel and pedestrian street through the historical center of the area - the main square is located. In the square two industrial chimneys are preserved and they serve as the areas’ landmark and symbol of site’s identity. Square opens to channel and os a place for farry stop. Green areas such as parks and green public or semi public courtyards are planned to gain green corridor which would connect two important recreational areas - Dzeguzkalns and zunda channel. There is a tunnel planned in the northern part of area wich will connect both bank of river Daugava and is going to be with high intensity. Therefore in the northern part of development area higher office buildings are planned which will serve as a sound barrier too. The hight of buildings lowers towards channel to allow to have views on it for more buildings. Consept of illumination is planned individually and streghtens the main aspects of urban design Urban square and both pedestrian promenades are most illuminated ones. Lighting is designed with an aim to diversify development area and to achieve different atmosphere while walking through.

Part A

Existing situation Project is elaborated during my practise in architectural office “Treimanis un sabiedrotie”. My contribution to the project: co-author of concept for development part C, research on existing examples, 3d models, drawings. Project is self-iniciated by architect Edgars Treimanis and has been presented in annual event “Architecture day in Riga” in year 2008. Project is a vision of how could develope the area in Riga city center near railway if the embankment would be replaced with elevated tracks. The embankment of railway causes uneven development of city on both sides and acts as a barrier. The project aims to connect both sides of railway by designing and renewing streets, pedestrian walkways and public spaces. New intermodal transport hub is designed in this area and new development planned near, under and up the railtracks. As the project covers large area in city it is divided in three parts to achieve graduale development. Part A: Buildings are made so that they allow vissual transparency between Old town and Central Market. As wall they act as gateways for entering the city with train. Public functions on the ground floor helps to make this area of the city more lively. The greenary near railway closes the “green belt “ of the Old town. Part B: The clock of the old station is kept as a landmark in the station square. New railway station is planned under and over the elevated railtracks. Bus terminal as well as tram and troleybus stops are integrated in new station to achieve more comfortable use of public tranpsort. The tranportation system is reorganized to achieve better access to the station and to improve the flows of traffic. New office and retail spaces are designed to help the project to develope financialy. Part C: Proposal suggests to use the spaces above the railway tracks to intensify the use of land in the city center. New public, office and retail buildings are planned. The platform above railway can be used as green urban space by citizens of Riga. New multifunctional hall can be designed after moving the bus end-point in the intermodal hub. A large car parking is planned underground to relieve the city center from concetration of car parks.

Project has been elaborated together with architecture student Didzis Jaunzems and architect Mara Abele as a consultant. Project has won the rights to be realized in Memorial park “Liktendarzs” on island in river Daugava. Viewing terrace and pavilion is situated in the area of Consolation which is the first zone of Future. The tight bound between latvian people and nature has been accented in the project. Nature is a source of inner energy, strenth, peace and harmony. Nature has been a priority in this project as it is the consolation for latvians. The project has been designed considering and using sights particularities: - considered the main flow of people; - stoping points such as benches are situated in the places where view is most staning and most emotional; - volume of the building takes into consideration most valuable trees on the sight; - terrain level differences is used in the project design. Viewing terrace and building has diversified levels of “openness”. This gives the opportunity to use the building in all kind of weather conditions as well as lets visitors to choose the level which suits them better. The volume of the pavilion is designed so that it gradually grows from a bench into the building. Vissually seems that the path goes in two levels - first one goes down to river Daugava and the second one goes up to the roof of the building which serves as an elevated platform. Changing of the roof inclination creates an interesting place where to play and relax. Pavilion and viewing terrace is made in wooden constructions. Wooden planks are used to cover roof in this way it has the same material as wooden walkways in the area of Consolation.

Project has been elaborated together with architecture student Didzis Jaunzems for an international competition of Saint - Gobain „Multi - comfort house-school, a new concept of learning”. Year 2008. Task was to design a school for 200-230 pupils (up to 15 years old) where classical teaching standards interact with contemporary, innovative methods. Participants of competition should especially consider ecological – passive house and sustainable aspects of their buildings. Idea: Truly sustainable is school which is being used all the time: the composition of rooms is made so that also other citizens can use the building when pupils aren’t there, without a necessity to cross all school to get where it is needed. The composition of rooms in the building is placed in order from the loudest to the most quiet ones: in one corner there is a sport’s hall, in the opposite – a library. Primary and secondary school students have one common and two separate courtyards. Correct placement of rooms and protection from overheating are taken into account. Proposal takes into accout traditional materials and building volumes of Eupilio (pitched roofs, buildings of small scale).

Individualy elaborated project. Year 2009. Task was to design a sauna house. As the building is situated on the border of two separate lots it was important that it could be used from both sides independently. The language of forms used are comon in the regionThe building serves as a recreational space (living room and sauna) and as a storeroom. The storeroom is situated in the corner where three lots come together and is designed so that it is accessible from all three sides. The living area and sauna is designed for two lots and is easy reachable from two sides. Usage of shutters ensures that it is possible to use the sauna house from both sides independently and also it can be used from both sides together. When shutters are closed the building is very neutral and acts as a continuation of fence whereas when the shutters are opened it is very expressive and welcoming. Materials used in the building are common in Pavilosta city.

Bachelor project. Year 2008. The tas was to design a development concept for living quarter in former industrial area and to make a detailed design for two types of housing. Idea: The characteristic of quarter are differentiation of courtyards – recreational courtyards that are fully car-free interchange with representative courtyards that ensure comfortable access to the buildings. The different functions of courtyards as well as various character of promenade along the Zunda channel will be marked also in the night by illuminating the area differently. Apartment building is made as section type building. Under the buildings and under representative courtyards underground car parking is situated. On the ground floor also different public spaces are designed – office, store, cafe’ etc. Upper apartments in the building have two floors and wide roof terraces. Linked houses are situated so that from every housing the Zunda channel could be visible. Two and three stories high houses are designed. Materials used in the buildings are concrete for structure and wooden panels in warm colours for outer skin. Soft colors and wooden tecture gives the quarter nice and comfortable feeling.

This project has been elaborated during my studies in Politecnico di Milano with Erasmus sholarship. Course: Innovative presentation instruments. Course was concentrating on how to present the project with help of 3d programms. During this course I have improved my 3d modeling and photomontage skills. The task was to design and make 4 visualisations for a family house (site 4 X 20 m) in the centre of Amsterdam. One side of building is situated towards canal, but the opposite – towards street. Idea: The play with geometrical shapes and cubes is the main design feature. House has a clear functional organization - from the most public functions on ground floor to more private ones in upper levels. The ground floor is organized for services – the entrances and garage is situated there. The first and second floor are connected through the reception room which is two stories high. Kitchen and dining area opens to this living space as well. There is a bedroom situated in the upper floor. There are two terraces in the house - first one on the first floor for dining area and second one on the third floor which can be reach from bedroom.

Pictures of the model

Project is elaborated in 3rd year of studies in Riga Technical University. Year 2008. The task was to design a construction that shows how to cover a large span sport hall. Building should be used also for other functions. Task also was to concentrate on making accurate model. Idea: Cover of the structure is supported on three points as it is the most stabile and at the same time minimum number of points needed to support plane. Structure is based on two triangles - one of them (the biggest one) is supported on columns by perimeter, the other one is suspended in three large bearings. The movement of the structure in the wind is prevented due to framework used. Two sides of the model shows the structure of the building. The other part represents the buildings final appearance. As there are no bearings in the middle of the hall it is possible to change the plan within the building by using movable walls. There are three entrances with service bloks in the building. The main entrance is from the park. The smallest triangle allows to have daylight in the hall as it is covered with glass.
