PLAYFAIR

DISPLAY

Playfair Display is a transitional type family Designed by Claus Eggers Sørensen. Reminiscent of late-18th Century typography, Playfair Display is characterized by its extra large x-height and short descenders. Although Playfair Display’s high contrast and hairline strokes make it the perfect typeface for titling and headlines, its three weights and accompanying italic versions expand its use to small amounts of body copy as well.

WEIGHTS STYLES Playfair Display comes in three weights and two styles, including small caps for all weights and styles. Regular, which is the thinnest of the three weights, is best suited for both titling and body copy. As the width becomes more extreme in contrast, as seen with the remaining two weights, entitled bold and black, the typeface takes on a commanding persona, making it best suited for headlines and large copy. The italic versions embody the same traits of their regular counterparts, but boast more delicate flourishes.

Inspirations 15

INSPIRATIONS While Playfair Display is a modern typeface, its inspiration dates back to the late 18th century. During this time, the development of pointed steel pens allowed for the replacement of broad nib quills. This, along with developments in printing technology allowed designers to create letterforms characterized by delicate hairlines and high contrast. Playfair display is especially influenced by the desgins of printer and typeface designer John Baskerville and the “Scotch Roman typographic era that came about soon after.

ABOUT THE PROJECT This type specimen was designed using a MacBook Pro (Retina, 13- Inch) with OS Sierra and Adobe InDesign. The finished product you see before you was an assigned project for a Typography class taught Professor Claudia Strong at Syracuse University. It was completed in a little over a month and required multiple visits to issuu.com, endless cups of coffee, and one all-nighter.
