Additional Information ~ Suggestion Display the PowerPoint and see if anyone knows what onomatopoeia is. If they do elicit some examples. The rice Krispie packet links to a video. Then give out the worksheets for animals to ensure students know the names of these. Check answers. Give students “Name the sound” worksheet and go through the PowerPoint. Play the sounds and see if the students know what ii is. Not all sounds are of animals. This can be great fun if your students are willing to participate in stating what these sounds translate to in their language. When finished give out the “What noise does it make” work sheet and then check answers. Speakers are required. Suggested vocabulary – for a word search (you will have to create yourself) giraffe

Power point
Word search for each student
Hand out for each student
Estimated time for session: 1 hour Speakers required
Additional Information ~ Suggestion This is an adapted lesson from MGM and the original material is in the resources. However only page 27 is necessary for the students. The answers to the quiz are in the Millionnaire quiz as the students like to play this. Additional questions have been added to this to enable a million pounds to be reached. First of all elicit what a general knowledge quiz may be. Then put into teams/pairs and give out the quiz sheet (Page 27). Give the students’ five minutes to do this. Go through the PowerPoint and get the students to read the questions and the answers prior to giving their answer. (This helps to check their pronunciation). Students self check answers. When finished explain to students that they are going to make their own quiz. Put into pairs and give them the “Write your own quiz” worksheet and put them onto computers to research for questions. Put them into pairs to create questions and answers. Explain they put the correct answer in the space on page 2 of their sheet. Question 10 is for a topic of their choice. At the end of the session gather in the quizzes and use a mixture of the students questions to create another quiz. (The students will love to see if you know the answers to their questions. They can also quiz each other in class if they have time. Suggested vocabulary – for a word search (You will have to create yourself) general

Additional Information ~ Suggestion There is a video about avoiding workplace hazards on Slide 3 . There is a clip of a gorilla walking through a basketball game – ask the students if they think they are observant. Give the tally sheets to the students and explain they need to watch a video clip of a basketball game and tally up how many times the balls bounce (there is a gorilla walking on and off) and see how many students saw the gorilla. You will need to play this again for them to notice the gorilla. There is a power point for pronunciation purposes which includes the words phonetically written. The danger cards can be given to students to find some hazards which you may have in the room (bags etc) or you may wish to set up some yourself prior to the session to enable the students to place the cards on them. Lastly there are various pictures which can be given to students to find hazards. I would not recommend using them all in one session as it will get boring for them. Extension activity can include the students making health and safety posters.

Speakers required Additional Information ~ Suggestion First of all you will need to ensure students understand the words on the student worksheet. Give them dictionaries to look up the words. There is a PowerPoint with answers. Check if the students know the other words you are going to use, particularly if they are elementary students. Then go to the power point Gender words. Put the class into males and females. When a word appears then if they think this is a word associated with males or females in their country they should stand up. Discuss why. There are flashcards which you can print off and categorise into masculine or feminine headings as you go along. There is a video “The man drawer” use this with intermediate or higher students only. About Britain
7
Scope of tutorial
The focus is on providing information regarding the north, south, east and west of Britain. It gives explanation of the Union Jack and how it came to be. Introduces parts of the country and what some parts are famous for or an attraction in that part of the country.

Estimated time for session: 1 - 2 hours
Additional Information ~ Suggestion The power point should be shown in conjunction with the hand out, which is easier for the students to complete as you go through the power point. There is scope for discussion regarding not only the local area but where the students have been in the UK. Give out the handout after you have elicited information about Britain. The students can complete this as you go along. Write north, south, east and west onto the board for the students to copy in their handout. This will hopefully give them a sense of direction. Work together through the PowerPoint. There are video clips of The Norfolk Broads, The Lake District and Alton Towers. Comparison of different places could be utilised in this lesson, particularly if you have taught comparative and superlative adjectives. Students could create an advertisement poster for Boston and if you have taught purpose of text this could be a useful task. Dictionaries are a necessity
Post it notes necessary
Additional Information ~ Suggestion Give out the student worksheet and explain you will give a dictation of one sentence only. Ask them to compare spelling and then check their spelling with the next slide and ask them what “if it wasn’t for sliced bread”........ Means. Click on the sliced bread which will take you to a you tube video re. anti-knife crime. Then get the students to look up the words in pairs or groups using the dictionaries. The answers are on the slides (however, the students may come up with other definitions). Elicit the answers from them and see if they got them right. When this is completed tell them you will show them some short texts and they need to use the phrases on their worksheets to put the phrases into categories – A, B, C, D, and E. I would suggest you get the students to read the slides and have a discussion after each slide. You can generate further discussion about crime in their countries and get them to do an anti-crime poster or an anti-knife poster. I would use the words on the worksheet for pronunciation purposes or for hangman. Additionally, there is a PowerPoint regarding real and fake guns. Print off the wall pictures and give the students post it notes to put real or fake on each of the posters. Go through the PowerPoint and see how many they got right. Word search for each student
Estimated time for session: 1hour
Additional Information ~ Suggestion After displaying the aims of the session, explain you will give them a dictation (you may have to explain this word). Tell them after the sentence is finished that they need to put the time on their worksheet which is “normal” in their country. Tell them not to worry about spelling at the moment. Give out the student worksheet and read the sentences which are on the teacher’s worksheet. Repeat the words as necessary and every few sentences get the students to feed back the sentences to you. When all the sentences are completed get them to check each other’s spelling. Then put into groups by nationality to see if they agree on the times they have written. (You could write up a column for each nationality on a whiteboard and write up the replies for comparison). You can generate further discussion about countries and the student’s culture from this tutorial. There are two extension slides on the PowerPoint.
