In response to the ‘Travel Broadens the Mind’ 2016 competition hosted by the Business Confucius Institute at the University of Leeds, I designed this contemporary version of the traditional qi pao and won the competition. Drawing from Chinese and British heritage, my dress was inspired by the legendary Empress Wu Zetian and Empress Dowager Cixi. The dress is opulent and powerful with its masculine military epaulettes but remains feminine with the close fit of the traditional qi pao silhouette. The 100% British wool tweed further represents British heritage juxtaposing against the Chinese silhouette and decorative Chinese knot features.
