SUMMARY Nowadays emergency systems for elderly are usually made for care givers or families, but not the elderly themselves. Solving this problem and developing this idea suitable for the future generations, was the goal of this project. The following concept empowers seniors to live a self-determined life by regaining responsibility and control without compromising on safety. It is a home-monitoring system driven by artificial intelligence that does not only care about your safety but also your health. It works without cameras, infrared or other people involved. This means the user is in full control of his/her own monitoring. To avoid the risk of carelessness or misjudging their own situation, the built in artificial consciousness acts like a neutral person, guides and supports the user as a personal medical guardian. With the help of wireless signals, Ory can track people through walls, analyse the heartbeat and breathing as well as detect a fall or irregularities in walking speed over a long time period. This is not only a central part in detecting slowly rising diseases like dementia, but also raises consciousness about their general health & ageing process and helps to act proactively to accept & prepare for upcoming changes in high age.

LESSONS LEARNED > ENABLE, ENCOURAGE, CONNECT Through research and analysis, three main topics were filtered to deal with further on in order to reach the goal. To enable elderly and support them with their physical needs, to encourage them and provide them stability and trust to be wanting to integrate into the multigenerational community and to establish a connection, a network, to bring generations together.

> ROBOTICS & BIOTECH Robotic trends like artificial intelligence, autonomous personal robots and biotech will shape the future and will especially get important for high age to solve daily problems.

> SLOWLY GROWING NEEDS As there is no specific point when we are old, when would be the point one considers himself or herself as an old person? Ageing is a process that is not only individual but goes on very slow, so that the needs that are occurring in high age arise step by step.

In the past it was common sense not to dig deeper when a person suffers from depression in high age. But there are always a few individual people who want to deal with their issues from the past. LESSONS LEARNED > FOCUS CHANGE / SOCIAL INTEGRATION NOT THE PROBLEM Through modern technology and mobile opportunities many solutions already focus on the problem how to integrate elderly into the bigger part of society via connecting them to each other or with their families. In interviews it also turned out to be a prejudice made by younger people who think older people are all lonely and would like to be more active and to connect with people. Making this conclusion, the focus changed to the goals of enabling and encouraging elderly rather than connecting or creating network interactions.

> HEALTH, INDEPENDENCE, PERCEPTION, RETIREMENT, LOSS There were five topics that always came up through the survey, observations and interviews. Therefore these topics were marked as main problems and will be treated as core challenges.

> IMPORTANCE OF GENERATION-CHANGE The generation change might be more significant than we expect it to be. While in the past elderly have not been asked if they are still living their life how they want to live, nowadays we have many opportunities to stay healthy longer and thereby more years to fill with quality time. Also not to forget the changing approach to current modern technologies that baby boomers use now and still will be when they are old. Another important point is the rising acceptance of ageing by the changing generations. Current baby boomers are more open to accept help or move to a smaller, more practical home when they need to, as they experience this exact problems now as a first generation that actively take the role of a care person for their parents.

> REDESIGNING SYSTEMS AND SOCIETY PERCEPTION A lot of issues, that come up in old age desire a more holistic solution than creating a single product. To be conscious about this fact, is needed to focus on smaller steps that can lead to a bigger approach.

> IMPORTANCE OF INDIVIDUALITY IN HEALTHCARE Observing elderly and systems made for elderly at fairs or at senior homes is a very emotional act, as one sees his/her own possible future. There is still a huge lack of products that address an elderly as a individual human being, yearning for self-expression, building personality, not only functionality.

CHALLENGE A / HEALTHY AGEING Healthy ageing does not only mean being prepared for the later life, but live healthy in general to decrease the risk of illness and increase the abilities in later life. As active ageing is usually of high effort and even something one might not think of in younger age, this is something that can be solved in an subconscious way. By tech-related solutions like virtual reality or gamification as well as the general way how we build cities and infrastructures. Walkable neighbourhoods is something that is very important in high age, to stay active by providing an accessable infrastructure with no barriers and enough diversity to activate the brain (Walkscore, 2017) (Brownstone, 2014). Another way to ensure healthy ageing could be triggering creativity and curiosity through inspiring experimental or activi-

ty starter kits. Reversing the idea of subconscious healthy ageing to conscious ageing brings even more opportunities. Conscious ageing lets us deal with our life more intense and seeing it more valuable. By changing also the perception of life-altering issues to a good thing or having an overview to deal with our lifetime in a more detailed way. The process of ageing itself is also an important issue, which can be visualized as a product that grows with you, guides you and gives you feedback about your healthstatus in an attractive and decorative way.

CHALLENGE B / INDEPENDENCE Independence is probably the most difficult issue when getting into the high aged life. As the financial side is getting more important, seniors tend to move if they are willing to. This leads to the opportunity to adapt the idea of student flats. Bringing not only students and elderly together (Szemberg Wodek, 2017) but create a multigenerational housing that adapts to the need of both, could be one solution of independent living for seniors. Also modern

2004). Another way of independent living is to build inclusive designed furniture for homes that are invisible to the eye of the public and visitor. This can be done on the level of furniture parts through shapeshifting or inclusive design but also ubiquitous as a system that influences the home as a whole. Reversing the idea of invisible support is leading us to making it visible. This again is related to change the perception of elderly by fashionize items and healthcare products and make them more advanced through modern technology.

CHALLENGE C / PERCEPTION Elderly are seen as ill and weak people in the public. Changing this is the goal of this topic. One generic solution to this would be starting at the very beginning of prejudice by making changes in education or the toy industry as well as marketing. Changing the perception has to be visual, not invisible. This can be reached through changing stigmatic healthcare products, fashionize them or make them even provocatively visible. The third way to counteract on the stigmatic perception of elderly is to bring

INTEGRATE LONGER IN WORK-LIFE

Retirement is something the babyboomers and the following generation either fears or is looking forward to. FIELD/E COPE WITH LOSS Coping with loss may be the most ubiquitous topic in high aged life. Not only by losing the independence and physical abilities but also longtime friendships and lifetime relationsips. Providing furniture or systems to have a quiet shelter in todays fast and loud world could be one improvement. Mostly this is not enough and a person needs some kind of guidance through the process, which can be supported by products or system kits that work as a companion or friend. Dealing even more intense with the feeling of depression or grieving, product solutions might

LESSONS LEARNED > TOPIC / INDEPENDENT LIVING Independence turned out to be the biggest topic and the most important when ageing. By getting older, the need of a quiet and comfortable space is rising. The home is getting more important to be a safe and soothing place. Not only improving this place with innovative products but also adress the need of inclusion in design to adress a broad target group and age without creating stigmatic perception will be the goal for this project.

> METATOPIC / HEALTHCARE In high age, dealing with health is a ubiquitous and daily activity. As it is also a big and important core part of every topic that was dealt with in the section before, healthcare will be a metatopic for this project.

MARKET OVERVIEW OF HEALTHCARE MONITORING In this overview, one can see the continuous transition from motivational healthcare products that prevent illness or support staying fit and healthy, to products that can heal or treat a specific disease. Both are emerging markets as we tend to get older by being healthier, but there will be an increase of people suffering from chronic diseases that need regular support or treatment.

LESSONS LEARNED > PROBLEM / LOSING RESPONSIBILITY OF ONESELF By looking at the market a lot of products adress not the elderly but the caregivers, which does not only exclude the elderly from not being able to use a product because of their physical abilities but also because they are simply not included in taking care of themselves in the marketing and society. It seems as they lose their responsibility over their own lives. Giving them back control and empowering themselves to live a self-determined life will be the core goal of this project.

> USE OF MODERN TECHNOLOGIES FOR THE FUTURE ELDERLY GENERATION Elderly are generally excluded from healthcare products that are using current technology. These technology is more often dedicated to the family of the elderly to monitor them. Through generations also elderly will be easily handle smartphones, apps and modern technology, so a future product should adress this change.

> FALL AS A MAIN PROBLEM In high age, the risk of falling is increasing dramatically. Not only because of physical changes as like problem with balance and coordination but also by the fact of living alone. Fall detection or emergency phone products are thereby the most prominent products for elderly on the market.

> HIGH EFFORT OF HEALTHCARE With high age many people suffer from more than one disease. That means daily planning of medication as well as doing regular check-ups at the doctor. So the effort of healthcare is rising, but at the same time people get less mobile through physical decline. This combination of facts makes them less independent and healthcare as a core challenge of high age.

“I do not want to be monitored & controlled by anyone.” WALTER, 85 THE CAUTIOUS Walter is living alone on the countryside. He lived there with his wife for 50 years, before she passed away a few years ago. His daughter and son are living both with their families 20km away in the nearest city. Walter is suffering from diabetes and hypertension and thereby has to take a lot of medication as well as having a frequent visit at the doctor to check his health condition. Besides doctor visits he also has to check his blood sugar and blood pressure daily. When he recently suffered from a stroke luckily there was a neighbour who called the ambulance immediately. Though Walter had no problems after regenerating from the stroke, his children are very worried about him and and want him to change to a more secure living situation, install security systems or family apps to keep them posted about his health status. He recognizes the danger of living alone on the countryside, but he wants to be responsible for his own life and not being dependent on care personal or being monitored 24/7 by his kids.

first challenge of appearance should be a non medical look, to not make a stigmatized product but rather a friend or companion that helps to age healthy. Thereby it should be also trustful for the user to accept decisions and suggestions. It should reflect the time of application as it will be about 15-20 years ahead but also integrate itself into home interiors, which means it should not be too conservative but also not too flamboyant looking. The appearance should also visualize the AI as a contained soul or living being. The final challenge would be to avoid a surveillance looking product, where the user would have a feeling to be monitored all the time.

LESSONS LEARNED > INDIVIDUAL, ADAPTING PRODUCT WITH OPTIMIZING SUGGESTION FUNCTION The product has to adapt to an individual person and their needs. The needs are often very mixed and unique that there is no sense in doing general “healthcare levels that would fit to anybody. The product will have several functions that should adapt to the user needs or controlled and switched on/off by the user. To avoid not receiving the best healthcare the AI will recognize the fitting needs and suggest visually the best settings for the user. Thereby the user has still the control, but is informed by a natural person about his/her state of health.

> SERVICE The service will provide healthy ageing, health management, emergency assistance as well as health therapy. Furthermore it will help the user to build up trust and help with the installation and set up.

> PRODUCT The product itself should relate to the concept topic. It should be organic and smooth, integrate to the interior design but not be too fancy, to still remain a trustful and serious appearance. Avoiding empty batteries, all products will be equipped with cable but still contain a 30h emergency battery lifetime.

> RANGE OF PRODUCTS The range of products for the user contains Central unit, Repeater, Mobile Repeater, Smart Lock and the digital Health Profile. Additionally to complete the network, the doctor will also have a digital Account to check up on patients and receive health reports as well as send suggestions to the user if unlocked by the user.

Another possibility could be to implement the foil behind the surface of the inner core and treat this surface with laser so that the OLED can shine through. The second challenge is the production of the translucent shell. The undercut shell brings its own difficoulty to manufacture and as the core part has to be fixed inside of the shell, there has to be a way to assemble them. Another requirement would also be that through interaction, the shell would be pushed towards the core part, so the two parts have to be connected and fixed. One way to do this would be to create the shell as a 3D printed part, that does just appears to flow around the core part,

outlook.

08.05

WHAT WOULD BE NEXT? To bring the concept to a next level, expert groups, consisting of doctors, specialists, psychologists and AI experts, have to be created to design the AI character and individual health bundles. Each expert group will then continuously deal with specific health problems and develop AI behaviour pattern as well as the medical health base to be able to serve the user. Apart from these specific health bundles there would be a general health database where every Ory-related AI would have always access to. This contains behaviour like the emergency services and detecting general diseases from monitoring and health data analysis. Third party companies can be contacted to offer a cooperation between their healthcare products and the Ory system. Thereby these companies can already offer a plugin or prepare a software extension for their product and apps to be able to later on communicate and send data to the Ory database. These cooperation will also help Ory to be early promoted for healthcare product users. Apart from the software, health insurance institutions and medical organisations can be asked for support and implementation. Thereby the insurance companies can profit from early disease detection of their clients, whereas the the user would be more likely to buy the product when offered a discount from their insurance.
