welcome Welcome to the 12th Annual Tacoma Film Festival! This is my fifth year directing TFF and it inspires me to see that not only have filmmakers become more committed to TFF, so has our community. Local businesses sponsor events and films, volunteers take care of thousands of daily details, and more of our friends and neighbors have jumped in to the totally unique, creative, and enthusiastic experience of discovering what a film festival is.

Laura Nyhuis, Director

At TFF you will find new films of all kinds: live-action, documentary, animated, virtual reality, and 360 degree short and features from the Pacific Northwest and around the globe. Many of our films are premieres: and you will be the first in the world to see it. TFF’s eight days represent an entire year’s worth of work from our volunteers and staff who watch over 1,750 films submitted from Korea to Liechtenstein to Rwanda to Iran to our own backyard. Yes, it can be a challenge to map out your trip to TFF. Don’t know where to start? Flip through the program with your eyes closed and point, pick something. Anything. You may see a new perspective, a new idea, a new inspiration that you never considered before - and you’ll have that mind blowing experience along with hundreds of film supporters and filmmakers. See you at the movies!

The Art of No Budget Filmmaking WITH MARK STOLAROFF seminar tue/oCT 10/11:00 AM FREE THE GRAND CINEMA 606 S. FAWCETT AVENUE

While it’s been getting easier to make a quality feature film for less money, to make a good film for NO money-or rather, the little bit of money you have available to you right now--requires a radical rethinking of the movie-making process. Mark Stolaroff, founder of No Budget Film School, reveals the key principles that will enable you to make a film for nearly nothing.

In this seminar, you’ll learn: The two crucial concepts for making a quality no-budget film; how to turn production problems into opportunities; the two lists that every nobudget filmmaker should have before writing their script; the most important element to the success of your no-budget film; the real lesson of Dogme 95 and how it applies to you; and a detailed case study of Chris Nolan’s $12,000 first feature FOLLOWING.
