Restoration Project - San Jorge Theater I Final Degree Project

San Jorge Theater

Elevation

Founded in 1938 it was one of the most important theaters in Colombia, was visited for all kind of people: from the president to the common worker, and had capacity for 1400 persons. Located in one of the most important sector of Bogotá in that time, 40 years later due to numerous factors, the theater was bought by a recycling companny that demolished a very important parts of it to make it “functional” as a cellar. The project wants to envince the asthetic, historical, social and architectonic values of the theater to bring back one of the most undervalued buildings in the city.

Restoration Project - San Jorge Theater I Final Degree Project

Building Values Was designed to be one of the most prestigious theaters in that time. The style Art Deco is all over the building, from the colors and the geometry to the forms and spaces. The spaces had a tecnical design, from the balcony to the angle of inclination in the orchestra space. Then the structure was an innovating system because it was a combination of concrete, wood, brick and metal; a daring system for the knowledge of that time.

Actual condition The general aspect of the theater is deteriored, without sense of belonging of the inhabitants, the asthetic values are almost lost and the important spaces are broken and to prevent some homeless people get in the building, the windows have been removed. The next graphics show how the theater has lost its spirit due to the pass of the time and the lost of the sense of belonging from the people of the neighborhood and the owners.

Urban Project The intention is to re-conect the theater with the actual dynamics of the context, so the main interventions are: - The north street become pedestrian. - The addition of the neighbor building. - The integration of an existing parking lot. - The opening of the north tower on the first floor.

Building Project According with the urban project, the theater has to respond to the new circuits of people. The two facades have a very notorious contrast, so the project take advantaje of that making the long facade very contemporaneous and creating a new acces, while the old facade keep its elements, which let the building tell its own asthetic value.

Keywords: Natural resources, Natural patrimony, Rural population, Local economy, Education, Public space, Ecosystem, Building insertion.

Integration Center for Production and Conservation of the Rural Enviroment I Academic Project

Choachí Is located behind the oriental mountains of Bogotá, with an estimated population of 10.730 people. It has a diverse production: flowers, vegetables, pigfarming, agriculture and more; the 90% of this products go to the capital city with no transformation, so the cost of it is very cheap making the producer work to sell the raw material and being unfairly paid. The aim of next project is to design a building that can approach this problematic and training people to make the most of their production.

The Pleated Ribbon I Space Laboratory

Place before the intervention

About the Intervention This was an internt contest to design an intervention at the campus of the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana in BogotĂĄ, every student had to present a design for the given space, then my design won the contest and it was built as a “space laboratoryâ€?. The intervention is designed to disrupt the continuity of the space, to change the perception of a transtion space to a place with some permanences.

Foldable Roof I Space Laboratory

About the Intervention The students of the class had to design a special structure for a 1:1 scale roof, so as a team we studied some modificable structrures made all over the world and we choosed this system for two reasons: first, this system let us design a portable and modificable roof and second because we could use cheap and recycled materials.

About

The historical center of Bogotรก is also an academic zone, there are 6 universities that recieves several number of foreign students, then this building is made to mitigate the lack of housing for this students. The building consists of 20 floors and 123 apartments for 402 residents. I participated in this project making some 3D model plans for interior design, real models and some version plans for the facade designing.
