MISSION:
Support the exploratory relationship between art and science in the context of; a Space Residency Project and a multimedia project. Provide uninterrupted time for work, reflection, collaboration, and interaction in the remote setting of natural cosmic beauty in the village of Magdalena, New Mexico, and its surroundings.
VISION:
To create a Residency Project which supports research, education and collaboration between interdisciplinary artists and scientists who have a special interest in cosmos/space related projects. To work on the production of a yearly interdisciplinary multimedia event entitled KosmicÂŽ Event, set in two astronomical desert locations; the National Radio Astronomy Observatory (VLA) and the Magdalena Ridge Observatory (MRO).
THE NATIONAL RADIO ASTRONOMY OBSERVATORY: The Very Large Array, one of the world’s premier astronomical radio observatories, consists of 27 radio antennas in a Y-shaped configuration on the Plains of San Agustin 50 miles west of Socorro, New Mexico. Each antenna is 25 meters (82 feet) in diameter. The data from the antennas is combined electronically to give the resolution of an antenna 36km (22 miles) across, with the sensitivity of a dish 130 meters (422 feet) in diameter.
MAGDALENA RIDGE OBSERVATORY: The Magdalena Ridge Observatory (MRO) is located on 1,000 acres at 10,600 feet in the Magdalena Mountains of the Cibola National Forest in Socorro County, New Mexico. This multi-use research and educational observatory is built and operated by the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology (NMT). The MRO consists of two major facilities: an operational 2.4-meter fast-tracking telescope (2.4-meter telescope) and Magdalena Ridge Observatory Interferometer (MROI), a ten-element optical/infrared interferometer under construction. The mission of the observatory is to support astronomy, space situational awareness and education.
MLNM SPACE RESIDENCY PROJECT / MAGDALENA HALL HOTEL : MLNM plan is to create a context of collaboration between artists and scientists for independent space related projects. MLNM Space Residency Project headquarters dream location is at the Historic Magdalena Hall Hotel, Magdalena, New Mexico. The hotel is 12,770 sq. ft at 0.425 acres and it is currently for sale/lease. If you put a lot of smart people in a room, great things happen. Complete building information available upon request
KOSMIC® EVENT : A LIVE MULTIMEDIA PRODUCTION Kosmic® Event 2015 presents a multimedia, site-specific live art production, set in two different remote New Mexico desert locations. The sacred land of the San Agustin Plains, home of the National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO) or (Very Large Array) and at the South Baldy Peak; 10,500 feet above sea level, the home of the Magdalena Ridge Observatory (MRO). The large scale production renders an intergalactic story of the universe and the human voyage on planet earth and beyond. Details and concept renderings of the production of Kosmic® Event 2015 are located in our secondary booklet.

WHY:
“ We believe that imagination will carry us to worlds that never were because without it, we go nowhere”.
Carl Sagan
To create a place where great minds come together to ignite imagination, dreams and curiosity.
HOW:
Settle the MLNM Space Residency Project headquarters in the village of Magdalena and produce the multimedia Kosmic® Event at The National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO) and at the Magdalena Ridge Observatory (MRO).Invite national and international creative people to engage in dialogue and collaboration around the astronomical landscape of Magdalena, New Mexico. Create a mentoring program to empower youth from middle to high school with interests in arts and science.
WHERE:
The village of Magdalena, New Mexico, which draws 25,000 tourists yearly, from all over the world who come to see the National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO) or (Very Large Array) and The Magdalena Ridge Observatory (MRO).

How we do it: Create a context of collaboration between artists and scientists for independent space related projects. Our intention is to create a stable foundation with focus on the following parts: . .
Invite 10-15 artists per year at various times to participate on either, selected independent projects and or to collaborate on the yearly creation and development of the multimedia-multidisciplinary production of KosmicÂŽEvent. Provide an opportunity to engage with local astronomers, engineers, scientists, ranchers, media students, farmers, Navajo community, weavers, wild life naturalists, geologists, artisans, educators, entrepreneurs and others.
. Create a mentoring program to empower youth by pairing scientists and artists in residence with students. . Support with credentials to visit the facilities of the National Radio Astronomy Observatory (VLA) and the Magdalena Ridge Observatory (MRO) . Create an original documentation of art / science works. An archive and digital video magazine designed for global website access to museums, schools, cultural institutions, and learning centers. . Offer a summer intern program. Our artists and scientists are the soul of the Space Residency Project. Their presence in Magdalena works as a catalyst for learning and experimentation, while fostering greater awareness of the role of science and the arts in the current world.

MAGDALENA, NEW MEXICO
MAGDALENA: The town of Magdalena is beautifully situated at 6,700 feet above sea level within a prehistoric ring of mountains in New Mexico’s high desert. While considered remote, it is drawn close to the world by WIFI access, two municipal airports and express delivery services. Although the mining industry has vanished and ranching has declined, the town’s infrastructure remains intact and is an oasis poised for resurgence. The history of Magdalena is one of frontier settlers, ranchers, cowboys, miners, Navajo community and Lebanese spice traders whose legacy spills into the present day. It is a place where the old west and the new frontier of scientists, artists, local artisan culture, natural beauty, space research and galactic enterprises meet. As part of the historic Space Trail, one can find the Scholle Crab Nebula Supernova Petroglyph, Zuni Pueblo Crab Nebula Supernova Petroglyph, Zuni Salt Lake, and the Columbia Scientific Balloon Facility. Located on the scenic “Ocean to Ocean” Highway 60, Magdalena boasts some of the darkest skies in the country. The Magdalena Ridge Observatory, the National Radio Astronomy Observatory and New Mexico Tech are all within a few miles of Magdalena and it is where you will find some of the greatest scientific minds working in space research. Spaceport America, home to Virgin Galactic’s Gateway to Space and Albuquerque’s International Sun Port are just an hour and a half away by road through majestic wide open spaces and unspoiled American movie like landscapes. 25K tourists come to the Magdalena Ridge Observatory and to the National Radio Astronomy Observatory each year. This number is projected to increase after two new visitors centers open in 2015.
