I imagine a more humane world with the power of collaboration, specifically incorporating an artist’s voice into how company’s build their research & development teams. It is an important and radical way for generating a social, cultural point of view to the way they are producing and inventing. Artists not only add creativity and unique thinking; but more importantly to our culture, they add humanity, empathy, emotion and a global cultural voice. I know that this type of engagement creates positive cross pollination of knowledge exchange, helps to identify stale processes and the reinvention of routine, offers a new kind of technical expertise, helps staff employee’s absorb the risks of new ideas, fills gaps in knowledge and skills, adds a third party stimulus that asks relevant questions and offers different perspectives, and finally and most importantly, sparks the imagination and inspires wonder. (which on a larger scale reduces stress in the work place and makes for a more enjoyable and healthy work day experience). In order to further research this concept, I wanted to hear from leaders, pioneers of all disciplines. And that is how Project61 VMAG started. This video and now print magazine is an open source exchange between disciplines, communities, cultures, and citizens of all generations. It follows the “seven generations stewardship” concept of the Iroquois, where we live, work and pass on knowledge for the benefit of the seventh generation into the future. WHAT IS THE GOAL OF P61 VMAG?
The primary goal of this magazine is to extend the global community of interdisciplinary collaborations in art, science, technology, engineering, design, education and maths, by creating a global voice for collective support. The aim is to present to the public an open source magazine that will be inspiring, informative, uplifting, and educational. Each video will feature either an artist, engineer, scientist, designer, technologist, astronomer, mathematician, or teacher speaking about the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration.

WE ARE INTERDISCIPLINARY INNOVATION PROPELLANTS Drawing from Project61’s roster of artists with demonstrated experience in science, technology, and engineering, we integrate them into company R&D teams; (scientists, engineers and technologists) for a specified duration, to work with their team solving a particular problem. Through a considered pairing process that recognizes and accommodates technical skills, corporate culture, and artistic quality, Project61 creates opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration and radical innovation. WE MANAGE AND MONITOR. Our interdisciplinary pairings generate unique ideation and faster feedback, as well as engaging the creativity of an R&D team. By carefully managing and tracking progress, Project61 provides insights into the organic transfer of knowledge across specialties, developing core competencies and problem-solving skills. Our data and methodology accelerates the traditional R&D cycle, allowing for quick failures and even quicker solutions. We do this process in order to gather hard numbers to show the value of an artist at the table when things are being invented that wind up in our world.

JOE DAVIS Joe Davis is an artist, scientist, poet and research affiliate in the Department of Biology at MIT, and in the George Church Laboratory at Harvard Medical School and the Ashley Seifert Lab at University of Kentucky. While earning his Creative Arts degree (1973) from Mt Angel College in Oregon, he pioneered sculptural methods in laser carving at Bell Laboratories in Murray Hill, NJ, University of Cincinnati Medical Center Laser Laboratory and other renowned laboratories. In 1976, Davis signed the first launch services agreement with NASA to fly a payload for the arts on Space Shuttle and in 1980, was the first non-scientist to address Goddard Spaceflight Center’s Engineering Colloquium. He joined MIT Center for Advanced Visual Studies in 1981 as a Research Fellow and was appointed Lecturer in Architecture shortly thereafter. In 1986, Davis created Microvenus, the first genetically engineered work of art and organized the most powerful and lengthily radar signals for extraterrestrial intelligence ever transmitted (Poetica Vaginal). In 1989 he created large permanent public sculpture, fountain and pedestrian lighting for Kendall Sq. in Cambridge, MA. In the same year Davis joined the laboratory of Alexander Rich at MIT where he is widely regarded to have founded new fields in art and biology. He attached fishing rods and miniscule fish hooks to his microscopes and developed other whimsical instruments that could resolve audio signatures from microorganisms. His projects involving “DNA programming languages” for inserting poetic texts and graphics into living organisms have been frequently cited in scientific literature. In his 2009 Rubisco Stars project, Davis transmitted the gene for the most abundant protein on Earth from Arecibo Radar in Puerto Rico to three sun-like stars. In 2010, he joined the laboratory of George Church at Harvard where he is designated “Artist Scientist.” In 2011, Davis worked with collaborators at Havard and the Japanese National Institute of Agrobiological Sciences to genetically modify silkworms to produce transgenic silks biomineralized with metallic gold. Davis was awarded a Prix Ars Electronica “Golden Nica” in 2012 for his Bacterial Radio project. In 2012-13, Davis organized an international consortium to sequence the genome of the ancestor of all domestic apples and later, to contain a highly compressed version of Wikipedia in that same genome. He contributed Astrobiological Horticulture to Ars Electronica in 2016, a multifaceted project to create organisms suited for survival in extraterrestrial environments. Davis is currently collaborating with colleagues at Harvard to insert 3D moving images and holographic data into living cells and in a project with Ashley Seifert Lab at University of Kentucky, Davis is investigating genetics of serendipity in mice using mouse-driven mechanical dice-throwing apparatus. GEORGE CHURCH George leads Synthetic Biology at the Wyss Institute, where he oversees the directed evolution of molecules, polymers, and whole genomes to create new tools with applications in regenerative medicine and bio-production of chemicals. Among his recent work at the Wyss is development of a technology for synthesizing whole genes, and engineering whole genomes, far faster, more accurate, and less costly than current methods. George is widely recognized for his innovative contributions to genomic science and his many pioneering contributions to chemistry and biomedicine. In 1984, he developed the first direct genomic sequencing method, which resulted in the first genome sequence (the human pathogen, H. pylori). He helped initiate the Human Genome Project in 1984 and the Personal Genome Project in 2005. George invented the broadly applied concepts of molecular multiplexing and tags, homologous recombination methods, and array DNA synthesizers. His many innovations have been the basis for a number of companies including Editas (Gene therapy); Gen9bio (Synthetic DNA); and Veritas Genetics (full human genome sequencing). George is Professor of Genetics at Harvard Medical School and Professor of Health Sciences and Technology at Harvard and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He is Director of a U.S. Department of Energy Technology Center and a National Institutes of Health Center of Excellence in Genomic Science. His has received numerous awards including the 2011 Bower Award and Prize for Achievement in Science from the Franklin Institute and election to the National Academy of Sciences and Engineering. He is the co-author of 453 papers, 105 patent publications & the book “Regenesis”, developed methods used for the first genome sequence (1994) & million-fold cost reductions since (via NGS and nanopores), plus barcoding, DNA assembly from chips, genome editing, writing & recoding. He co-initiated the BRAIN Initiative (2011) & Genome Projects (1984, 2005) to provide & interpret the world’s only open-access personal precision medicine datasets. CAROLINE SINDERS Caroline Sinders is a machine learning designer/user researcher, artist, and digital anthropologist obsessed with language, culture and images. For the past few years, she has been focusing on the intersections of natural language processing, artificial intelligence, abuse, and online harassment. She has spent the past two years studying online harassment and political activism on social media. Currently she is a BuzzFeed/Eyebeam Open Labs fellow where she is prototyping a machine learning system to mitigate online harassment. Prior to that she worked at IBM Watson as a design researcher., and in another life, she was a photojournalist. Sometimes, she makes experimental video games and art. She was born in New Orleans and is currently based in Brooklyn (and occasionally, lives in airports). Caroline holds a masters from NYU’s Interactive Telecommunications Program where she focused on HCI, storytelling, and social media theory, and has a BFA in Photography and Imaging with a focus in digital media and culture from NYU. ARIEL HALEVI Ariel Halevi is one of the co-founders of Vayomar, a global provider of communication competencies that helps individuals and companies realize and articulate their goals. A better humanity through better interpersonal communication. He has over 10 years of experience in enterprise services, as co-founder of Debate Company Ltd., Israel’s largest training and consulting firm in the field of interpersonal communication. He was a Serial entrepreneur for nearly two decades. Mr. Halevi holds a BA & MA from IDC Herzliya., and a BA in Government and Diplomacy studies and an MA in Counter-Terrorism and Homeland Security. His life is dedicated to the improvement of our ability to communicate with each other and as a result fully realize our potential: as individuals, organizations and as a species. A teacher, first and foremost, he is most passionate about the fields of Interpersonal Communication, Persuasion and Influence Without Authority. Following a few life-altering years as a competitive debater and captain of his college debate club (The Interdisciplinary College), I decided to dedicate my life to the study of these fields so that I may live a happy and productive life dedicated to helping others do the same. DOMHNAILL HERNON Domhnaill Hernon is Head of Innovation Incubation & Experiments in Arts and Technology (E.A.T.) at Nokia Bell Labs. He is a Director of Research and Site Lead for Research Impact in Murray Hill in New Jersey. He graduated with a B.Eng in Aeronautical Engineering and PhD in Fundamental Fluid Mechanics from the University of Limerick, Ireland. Domhnaill joined the Thermal Management Research Group at Bell Labs in November 2006 and created and tested novel 3D heat sink structures. He led the expansion of the team’s research into eco-sustainability with particular focus on energy harvesting. Following this, Domhnaill became Technical Manager of the Thermal Management and Eco-sustainability research group at Bell Labs in December 2010 leading a research team in advanced thermal management, energy harvesting and energy storage solutions for next generation telecommunications products. In 2013 Domhnaill became Head of the Efficiency Energy Transfer (ηET) Department managing a team of 16. He plays an active role in building strong collaborations with multiple University partners to accelerate knowledge transfer across many disciplines ranging from thermal management on multiple scale (photonics, thermoelectrics and reliable active air cooling) to energy harvesting (vibrational energy harvesting for wireless sensors and alternative energy for off-grid power) to energy storage (novel battery architectures). Domhnaill represented Alcatel-Lucent on the Industry Steering Board of the International Energy research Center (IERC) for two years and played a significant role in establishing the governance, IP, research and business strategies for the center. December 2013, Domhnaill was awarded the “Young Leader of the Year Award” from the Irish Lab Awards. Domhnaill has authored over 20 refereed publications, has 3 patents granted with 10 pending. He is currently responsible for three research departments in the areas of AudioVisual Research, Hybrid Photonics Integration & Packaging, and Efficient Energy Transfer and he also holds a senior role as the site lead at the Bell Labs research headquarters for research impact. SETH CLUETT Seth Cluett is an artist and composer who is currently an Artist in Residence at Nokia Bell Labs’ E.A.T. Program. His work ranges from photography and drawing to video, sound installation, concert music, and critical writing. His “subtle…seductive, immersive” (Artforum) work has been characterized as “rigorously focused and full of detail” (e/i) and “dramatic, powerful, and at one with nature” (The Wire). Exploring the territory between the senses, Cluett’s works are marked by a detailed attention to perception and to the role of sound in the creation of a sense of place, the workings of memory, and the experience of time. His research interests and critical writings investigate embodied cognition, sound in virtual and augmented reality, the media history of the loudspeaker, the history and documentation of sound in art practice, and architectural acoustics. His work has been presented internationally at institutions and festivals such as Kill Your Timid Notion at Dundee Contemporary Arts in Scotland; the Ars Electronica Festival and Alte Schmiede in Vienna; the 10th Rencontres Internationales, Palais de Tokyo, Main d’Oeuvres, and GRM in Paris; Hebbel am Ufer Theater and Staalplaat in Berlin; the Osage Art Foundation/October Contemporary in Hong Kong; The Whitney Museum, MoMA PS1, The Kitchen, Issue Project Room, Eyebeam, and Audio Visual Arts in New York; the Institute for Contemporary Art, Non-Event, and Mobius Artist Space in Boston; the Betty Rymer, Heaven, Artemisia, and Deadtech Galleries in Chicago; as well as Swarm Gallery in Oakland, CA and the Deep Listening Space in Kingston, NY. ANDREAS MERSHIN Andreas Mershin is a Physicist and Research Scientist at the MIT Center for Bits and Atoms. He earned his MSci in Physics and Cosmology at Imperial College London and his PhD in Physics and Biophysics at Texas A&M University. He is currently a Research Scientist at the MIT Center for Bits and Atoms where he leads the Label Free Research Group that operates in blissful ignorance of any boundaries between physics, biology, materials and information sciences. JOHN B.FULLERTON John Fullerton is the Founder and President of Capital Institute, “a collaborative working to explore and effect the economic transition to a more just, regenerative, and thus sustainable way of living on this earth through the transformation of finance.” Through the work of Capital Institute, regular public speaking engagements, and university lectures, John has become a recognized thought leader in the New Economy space generally, and the financial system transformation challenge in particular. PAOLA ANTONELLI Paola Antonelli is a Senior Curator of Architecture and Design, and the Director of R&D at MoMA. She is an Italian-born curator at the Museum of Modern Art in New York and one of the world’s foremost experts on contemporary architecture and design. She received her MA in Architecture from Milan Polytechnic in 1990, and worked at the design magazines Domus and Abitare before coming to MoMA in 1994. At MoMA, where serves as curator for the Department of Architecture and Design, Antonelli has been a strong of advocate of treating design as art: she’s written that “everything is designed, one way or another.” Antonelli is known for her eclecticism, and has curated well-received shows such as Workspheres (2001), devoted to the workplace of the near future. Her recent exhibit SAFE included – among other materials – a UN refugee tarp, camouflage cream, and a baby buggy. TUCKER VIEMEISTER *Tucker Viemeister is an industrial designer and Founder of Viemeister Industries. He is a distinguished and award winning industrial designer and innovator. He is most famous for the iconic OXO Good Grips kitchen tools* that conceived “universal design” when designed at Smart Design, the company he helped found. During Mr. Viemeister’s hugely influential career, in addition to Smart Design, he opened frogdesign’s New York office, and founded Razorfish’s physical design capability group, Springtime-USA, and was Lab Chief at Rockwell Group and Director of Special Projects with Ralph Appelbaum Associates and Thinc; and he is also the founder of Viemeister Industries. SAUL OSTROW Saul Ostrow is an independent critic, curator, and founder of CPI. In 1996 he terminated his studio practice, after having exhibited nationally, and internationally for over 20 years. In 2011, he founded Critical Practices Inc. to promote critical discourse. Its two core programs are: 21StPROJECTS, which sponsors viewings of artists works, and La Table Ronde (initiated in 2012,) which organizes roundtable discussions on critical and theoretical cultural issues. CPI was created to develop a dynamic network of cultural producers to support the emergence and development of new practices and ideas within the field of critical cultural production. It is our intent to serve a diverse community of producers by creating a dynamic network to facilitate in the shaping of critical discourse and practice. To achieve its goals, CPI operates “outside” the norms of the institutional and instrumental perspectives of the marketplace. Our programs are neither in opposition to, nor in compliance with, institutional models, instead, we employ the associations and priorities that define the community of critical producers and common goals- objectives to provide a platform for these diverse points of views. ´ CHRISTIAN VIVEROS-FAUNE Christian Viveros-Faune is a New York-based art critic and curator, as well as a former art dealer and art fair director. His writing has published in Art in America, Artnews, ArtReview, The Art Newspaper, Frieze and the New York Press As a writer, he has written extensively about art and culture for many publications, among them Art in America, The New Yorker, Departures, and Newsweek. He currently writes art criticism for The Village Voice and artnet news. A collection of his criticism, Greatest Hits: Arte en Nueva York, 2001-2011, was published by Metales Pesados, S.A., in 2012. His newest book, Lissie Habie: A Life in Pictures, about the late Guatemalan photographer and sculptor, will be published by CHARTA. Additionally, Viveros-Fauné has curated many gallery, museum, and biennial exhibitions. CHARLES MARY KUBRICHT Charles Mary Kubricht, an artist living in New York City and Marfa, has been exhibiting her work in the US and abroad for three decades. She explores biography of site through the interrelationship of direct perception and the lenses of technology. Her work has been shown in solo exhibitions at the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston, Austin Museum of Art, and Art Museum of South Texas, as well as in numerous museum group exhibitions. Recently awarded a GSA Art in Architecture Award, she will create an interior installation for the new Port of Entry at Columbus, NM. She designed the stage set for DER PROTAGONIST performed by the Fire Island Opera Festival, Fire Island, NY, in 2014. In 2013, she received a CREATING A LIVING LEGACY grant from the Joan Mitchell Foundation and DiverseWorks that will continue through 2015. Also, in 2013, she designed the stage set for THE ENCHANTED TREE for the Fire Island Opera Theater, Fire Island. In 2011 she received a public art commission from the High Line, NYC, ALIVENESSES:PROPOSAL FOR ADAPTATION. During 2011-2013, she created permanent public art installations for Dimensional Funds in London, Austin, and Santa Monica. In 2010 she created a permanent public art installation for Rice University, PARAMUSEUM: ENVIRONMENTAL EXIGENCIES, and was awarded a residency at YADDO. LARISSA BELCIC Larissa Belcic is a designer, researcher, and artist working to cultivate a world of cohabitation and flourishing amongst humans, technology, and ecological systems. KELVIN DOE Kelvin also known as DJ Focus, is a Sierra Leonean engineer. His creative instincts have been with him as a child and he would often dream of solutions to problems in his community. At the age of 10, he started scavenging for scrap electronics parts from dump sites after school for his inventions. Kelvin, together with his team, was a winner of Global Minimum’s Innovate Salone 2012 -- the inaugural high school innovation challenge in Sierra Leone. He had built a radio station for his community out of recycled materials, in addition to homemade batteries and a generator. Kelvin was selected to travel to the U.S. in 2012, where he was invited to speak at the “Meet the Young Makers” panel at the World Maker Faire 2012 in New York. Kelvin officially became the youngest ever “visiting practitioner” with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) International Development I nitiative. At MIT, he presented his inventions to students in two D-Lab classes, engaged with community members at MIT, and participated in hands-on research at the MIT Media Lab. He has also lectured to undergraduate engineering students at Harvard College.
