s we endure the gray winter months we must constantly remind ourselves that great things are ahead. At the top of the Laura U list of “just can’t wait for this to get here” are our revamped Tomlinson chairs (sigh) and the spring season! Just two of the many benefits of being a Texan are that we have a pretty fab winter and an early and lovely spring! Nothing puts me in a better frame of mind than dreaming of a perfectly pleasant March day. And now that we are well into the New Year, spring is just a breath away.

December saw us trekking across a snowy Paris, never disappointing and consistently inspiring. January found us searching for the newest gift items at the Dallas Market. February is keeping us busy as we tap our best stateside sources for the hard-to-find vintage pieces. March will be the month we bring all of our fantastic finds together for our big reveal in April!

Our February/March 2011 issue offers a sneak peek into what we have planned for the glorious spring months. I love that I can dream of spring and then visit it in the following pages whenever I like! Thank you so much for joining us virtually via the Laura U |Mag and we cannot wait to see you in the flesh at the new Laura U Collection showroom in April!

Best! Laura

A letter from the EDITOR February-March 2011

O

ver my very long and much needed, relaxing break, I visited my adopted hometown of Michigan. With more time on my hands than I knew what to do with, I rearranged furniture, did way too much shopping and slept like I’ve never slept before. It was cold, bitterly cold. The streets were lined with white mountains of snow and the skies never smiled, not once, not even a glimmer. So as we release this issue, I am very excited to welcome you to 2011 and I am even more excited to see what Spring 2011 has in store for Laura U and my new, great city. We added a few writers to our magazine staff, giving you even more to read and even more to be wowed by! I think each issue we are amazed at how much more evolved the magazine has become and how much more content there is to cover. In this issue, we take you into the first glimpse of spring, the season of rebirth, renewal and growth. There is so much to look forward to - in spring, the axis of the Earth is increasing its tilt towards the Sun and the length of daylight rapidly increases. The hemisphere begins to warm significantly causing new plant growth to "spring forth," giving the season its name. The snow and cold begins to disappear and streams swell with runoff. Many flowering plants start to bloom and everything looks so much more promising. We preview the Pantone 2011 spring colors, give you a taste of spring’s boldest and brightest, and show you how they can all come together. If you see something you like, don’t be afraid to try it. This year was the first year that my resolution was to make no resolutions. However, I did make one promise to myself, that I would try new things. Whether you plan on starting a spring makeover for your home, your wardrobe, or just in general, you will find many options from which to choose. Here’s to a wonderful, bright and productive 2011.

meet our contributors Shannon Ables Shannon Ables is the creator and editor of The Simply Luxurious Life blog, as well as a freelance writer and high school English teacher. Now living in a rural town after moving from the metropolitan life in Portland, she has discovered that a simply luxurious life is something that everyone can attain if indeed one is seeking quality rather than quantity, decadence rather than frivolity, personal style instead of trendy fashions and a truly fulfilling life instead of being led around by the nose. So whether it be found in food, fashion, or home decor, contentment, pleasure and a stylishly fulfilling life can be cultivated.

Tonia Bozeman Since she was introduced to thrifting by her late Grandmother and Aunt, Tonia has developed a fascination for all things vintage. This passion led her to dabble in interior design, decorating and writing. A self proclaimed professional thrifter and stylist, there is no singular title that encompasses all she knows, can do, has done or aim to do. She sets her own trends and styles without question. Because of this passion, she created Chic Modern Vintage, an online place that connects her to everything she enjoys. She loves rare vintage treasures, creative people, good vodka, great food, beautiful clothes, Prince, and old movies.

Shannon Fitzpatrick Shannon is a wife, mom to a two-year old son, and an aspiring interior designer. She is constantly thinking about ways to redecorate and spends hours creating mood boards for friends’ and families' homes. To fulfill her design urges, she started her blog, What's Up Whimsy in April 2010. It’s filled with home décor ideas and inspiration, DIY projects and artist spotlights in a "contemporary whimsy with a hint of vintage" style. During the day, Shannon splits her time between a management consulting firm and a downtown floral boutique. If you have any questions, you can contact her at whatsupwhimsy@gmail.com.

Living a luxurious life ultimately comes down to making sound choices, being a good editor and knowing what will work and what won’t work, whether your dealing with home décor, one’s closet or one’s life. A new season of fashion is upon us, and as the runways revealed last September, glamour, femininity, exquisite beauty and simplicity will be aplenty as shoppers embark on visits to their favorite boutiques and department stores to add touches of spring to their wardrobes. Each season, at first, appears much like a labyrinth – tricky and at first glance impossible to decipher as to what will work. However, the key is to choose pieces that will be timeless and highlight each woman’s own signature style. While there are many impressive trends, here are five looks that will receive the most mileage, countless compliments and exude every woman’s quiet self-confidence when worn to accentuate her individual beauty.

Sheers With feminine touches appearing in more than just one season, sheer fabrics are a common occurrence and can be incorporated in a variety of ways: a sheer layer over a silk sheath dress, an embroidered sheer blouse over a simple camisole or a delicate sheer layered pencil skirt. However a woman chooses to wear it, undoubtedly a gentle, subtle mood is presented, and this style is idyllic for someone who wants to show their feminine side.

Navy The most colorful neutral and yet, unexpectedly powerfully feminine as well. This spring trend has been paired frequently with nude and for good reason – it’s simply a stunning and elegant combination. A classic staple that can also be worn in a pencil skirt as the subtle backdrop to a bright print top, finished with nude pumps. .

Embe

Nudes and Neutrals

Not surprisingly, nudes and neutrals appears somewhat ubiquitously and Donna Karan deviated very little from it. The secret to purchasing an item in nude is to know what you want to spotlight. If you want to bring attention to your physique, choose a body-skimming dress similar to Donna Karan’s designs. If you want to elongate your legs, choose a nude pump, and if you want to streamline your profile, choose a nude blouse paired with a print or colorful skirt or trousers.

sash, possibly a few feathers. Including items in your closet is a simple way to a. The little black dress with eye catchhimmery gold bustier, what better way ention for all of the right reasons?

Feminine Glamour A modern lady is one who while wearing feminine attire, magnificent heels and perfectly selected accessories, can also command respect and exude confidence. This is precisely why feminine glamour will always be a classic choice for any woman’s closet. Monique Lhuillier presented a breath-taking collection of glamour and elegance that beautifully drapes a woman’s body while still keeping a bit of a mystery. And of course, Oscar de la Renta continued to remind us that retro glamour is something that will always look stunning, no matter the season.

M

y obsession began with the hunt for my master bedroom night stands. After tiring of seeing my alarm clock sadly perched atop a stack of novels, I ventured out with a mission. I searched with mounting disappointment for months and, as soon as I saw them, I knew: bright yellow Lucite beauties. I pondered the Ghost Buster table from Kartell for a few weeks more before I could no longer deny their magnetism. Thus began my love of PMMA in all of its glorious forms: plexi, Lucite, and acrylic alike.

From Drab To Fab WAYS TO INJECT COLOR INTO YOUR HOME DECOR

Is

beige your "go-to" color? Do bright colors in your home make you run for the door? Or are you looking for a way to introduce color, but don't know how? Either way you look at it, spring is the time to experiment with new looks and what better way to say goodbye to the drab and dark winter than introducing color into your home decor. Still not convinced? How about this: “The purest and most thoughtful minds are those which love color the most”, a quote by famous artist and poet John Ruskin. As any full fledged color-holic knows, this quote is a mantra to live by. To bring you over to the “bright” side, here is a list of five surefire ways to "subtlety" inject color into your home, whether you are color-phobic or completely clueless on how to do it. If you are still not ready to trade out drab for fab, let these photos speak for themselves.

Rugs

are often an afterthought when designing a room. Why not choose a bright and colorful rug first and then your neutral furniture and accessories afterwards? A rug should be the centerpiece of a room and, much like the centerpiece of a set table, it needs to create visual interest. So, what better way to create interest than with color! Whichever way you choose to go - solids, patterns, stripes, big, small or somewhere in between, a colorful rug can give your room that extra boost it needs. 51 | LauraU

window

treatments are often not factored into the design of a room, but framing windows is an important job! And what better way to ensure your drapes and shades look appealing and compliments your room, than by injecting color into your drapes. This can really dress up even the most blandest of rooms.

“The purest and most thoughtful minds are those which love color the most. - John Ruskin -

Pillows

are one of the oldest and best ways to incorporate color in your living room if you have a neutral sofa. By adding a few bright and colorful throw pillows, you are certain to create a totally different feel. A rule of thumb is to mix and match the pillows with a variety of patterns. Try solids with patterns, patterns with stripes and stripes with solids. Or include all three. It’s totally up to you. The great thing is, if you get sick of the color or want to change your decor for the seasons, just switch out the pillow cover for another one. This is a quick and easy ďŹ x to add some pizzazz to your living area.

Art

: If you are more drawn to neutrals for your furniture and paint colors, there is nothing more intriguing than a colorful burst of art on the walls. The art doesn't have to be expensive to make an impact. Try Etsy for inexpensive prints or look through your home for inspiration. Interesting greeting cards can be framed, family photos can be blown up to gallery art proportions and hung on the wall. Old music album covers look great framed and lined up in a grid pattern and even paint swatches can be displayed as art...the opportunities are endless! And the look on your guests face when they see that unique and colorful piece of art on a white backdrop is priceless.

This theme is shown throughout her entire collection and expresses her carefree and young at heart spirit. Betsey’s über pink apartment, designed by Betsey Johnson and BNO design, shows that well-selected combinations and taste can certainly create fashionable and modern interior. This extravagantly presented Hollywood glam style creates a home with a unique character. Betsey’s advice on redecorating: “Make it personal. I like houses that totally reflect their owners. Take some chances in the process. Try those colors you’ve always loved but were afraid to use. What’s the worst that can happen? You have to start over again? So what? Decorating is fun. And maybe you’ll learn something about yourself.”

I

f you’re like most people, you’re probably finding yourself uninspired in the midst of this dull and colorless winter blah. With spring in the near future, it is time to start a forecast all of your own. It is time to pack up the winter blues and make way for a jazzed interior filled with color, print and patterns. Spring and summer runways are featuring a unique combination of bold colors, patterns and neutrals rather than the classic shades from last year. A key element to updating your interior this spring is to include bright colors such as fuchsia, aqua, yellows, greens, and oranges. This year, Pantone named “honeysuckle” the color of the year, which means color, color, color! When you combine bright colors with patterns, it can get rather busy so you should select complimentary colors carefully. TIME

STANDS STILL...

Artist: Natalie Davis At a very young age, Natalie found herself behind the lens. She pursued her passion at Brooks Institute of Photography in Santa Barbara, where she earned a B.A. in Photography. After expressing her creativity as a scene stylist, photographer’s assistant and florist in Los Angeles, she lived and worked in Europe to further develop her unique photographic style.

Over the past fifteen years, Natalie has compiled an impressive body of work and is enthusiastic about sharing her view with the world. “Over the years I have come to realize that the most compelling parts of a story are the shots that our minds naturally filter out over the course of a day. With the camera, I can expose the beauty behind the expected. I want people to see that these moments, lost to the mundane, can actually excite our emotions, evoke memories…and train our minds to make new ones.”

Pink Passion Cupcakes

Make this Valentine’s Day extra special with a fabulous cupcake that everyone will rave about. These adorable, whimsical pink cupcakes are a sweet treat, perfect for ending your Valentine’s Day meal. They are made with a strawberry cake that’s topped with a sweet Strawberry frosting.

76| LauraU

Ingredients: 1 18.25-ounce box white cake mix 1 Ÿ cup water 1/3 cup strawberry jam or preserves 3 large eggs Strawberry Frosting (see recipe) Red candy melts (optional) Directions: 1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. You’ll need two 12-muffin cup tins. Line each of the 24 muffin/cupcake cups with paper cupcake liners. Set aside. 2. In a large bowl, combine the cake mix, water, strawberry jam/preserves, and eggs. Use a hand-mixer to beat softly at the lowest setting for about 30 seconds. Then, increase the handmixer speed to the medium setting and beat the batter for 2 minutes, until well combined. 3. Divide the batter evenly among the 24 muffin cups. You want to fill each cup about 2/3 full. 4. Slide the cupcake pans into the preheated oven. Bake for 18 - 20 minutes. A toothpick inserted into the center should come out cleanly. 5. Allow the cupcakes to fully cool before frosting. Once they are completely cooled, frost with Strawberry Frosting. 6. If you want to make a heart shaped cupcake topper, prepare a sheet of waxed paper on your work surface. Melt the red candy melts in the microwave (20 seconds, stir, 20 seconds, stir, repeat until smooth). Then, form thick heart shapes on the waxed paper. Allow the candy heart to fully cool and harden before inserting in the frosting.

The Kaufmann Hou 80 | LauraU

use: A TRUE STORY 81| LauraU

A Mid-Century Modern Reformation The Kaufmann house was originally built in 1946 by world renowned, mid-century architect Richard Neutra. As if that weren’t enough, the residence was then custom-built by Edgar J. Kaufmann Sr., the same man who commissioned Frank Lloyd Wright to construct another of the world’s most famous houses – (Falling Water in Mill Run, PA). It is remarkable that two of the most iconic homes in the whole world were created for the same man, even though designed by different architects. Neutra designed the International-style Kaufmann House (or Kaufmann Desert House as it is also known), out of stone, glass, aluminum, and steel at a cost of $295,000. The 5-bedroom, 6-bathroom, 3,200-square foot home, which sits on over 2 full acres of land, indoor-outdoor living space, features floor-to-ceiling sliding glass walls, a second-story outdoor sleeping area, a separate viewing platform,

a wall of moveable aluminum sheets that can be closed to keep out the sun or opened to feel the mid-afternoon breeze, a large pool, a tennis court, and striking mountain views. The home turned into an architectural landmark virtually overnight from famed photographer, Julius Schulman’s 1947 photographs. Unfortunately, after Kaufmann’s death in 1955, the property sat unoccupied for quite a few years and in 1993, the Kaufmann House was purchased for $1.5 million by Brent Harris, an investment manager, and Beth Edwards Harris, an architectural historian. Before their purchase, the pinwheel-shaped home went through a series of owners – singer Barry Manilow even lived in the home for a few years. Once purchased, the Edwards embarked upon an enormously, careful and expensive restoration of the entire property, taking it back to its original brilliance.

According to the New York Times, at the time the couple bought the residence, it was being listed as a “teardown” and it had been on the market for over three and a half years. The Harris’ had not planned on buying the home but they started following the property when Brent spotted an abandoned “for sale” sign in the front yard. Their purchase ended up being a very significant one since the couple restored it to its timeless beauty. They are largely credited for setting into motion the immense mid-century, modernist renovation movement that Palm Springs is now recognized for. The Kaufmann House is one of the most publicized homes in architectural history and one of the most significant models of mid-century modernist architecture. Also considered to be Richard Neutra’s finest design, in 1996, it was labeled as a Class 1 Historic Site by the Palm Springs Historic Site Preservation Board. The property has

been presented in numerous magazines and journals over its 64-year history, including Life Magazine, Time, and Palm Springs Life, not to mention numerous architectural publications. When the Harris’ separated in 2007, they decided to sell the property. It was put it up for auction at Christie’s. Christie’s characterized the home not as a piece of property or a residence, but as a work of art. The house sold at auction for an extraordinary $19.1 million, but due to financial shortcomings, it shortly went back on the market once again. This time as a typical real estate sale, with an asking price of just under $12.9 million. The home didn’t sell and has since been taken off the market, but continues to be one of the most iconic properties in the world. BB

new year and everyone is looking forward to beginnings. So why not give your home a new look too? There are several inexpensive ating ideas that will give you a finished look, u need is a little bit of creativity. By making e changes you can create a great impact in home's decor. Here are a few tricks to get you

going. One very general thing that can freshen up any space in an instant is a fresh coat of paint. There are incredible colors just waiting to be used. Furniture can also benefit from a new coat of paint as well. Try to be a little more bold in your choice of hue - the worst thing that could happen is you will have to repaint if you don't like the color.

Lamps are sometimes overlooked when decorating a room. Adding lamps to a room is just like adding jewelry to a fabulous outfit. Not only does lighting add ambiance, it adds warmth and character. It sometimes makes the room stand out even more. If you're someone who is not afraid to take on a new DIY project, you can even make a custom lamp from just about anything. And there is nothing better than a lamp made just for the room.

It’s no secret that using mirrors can create the illusion of a bigger space by reflecting light when placed in the perfect spot. And not only can you transform a living space with more light but you can also transform a bathroom/powder room by changing out the mirrors. Want to extend the life of a worn coffee or dining table? Well, you can always use a mirror that has been cut to size for a bit of glitz and glam.

Using trays to hold small decor items such as framed photos, candles, perfumes, or jewelry will instantly create vignettes that can be changed as often as you like. Look around your home, you might have a few existing pieces that are not being used or you can scout your local thrift store where you're sure to find a few, new interesting things. 92| LauraU

Because time is relative, vintage and contemporary pieces mixed with custom or restyled vintage furnishings can easily recall earlier times. Check with Grandma to see if she has a few things, such as family heirlooms, bric-abrac, “what-nots”, or even a piece of furniture or two that can be reupholstered or restored. Antique or vintage pieces have since stood the test of time, adding character and memories to your decor. When you do mix it up, this can provide a comfortable resonance for your living space.

Green plants. Yes, plants are not only an inexpensive way to add color to your décor, but they also improve your air quality too. Fresh flowers are also a great option as well to add a splash of color to your space.

THE ICE HOTEL A Look Inside the “Coldest” Design in the World

Written by Gabrielle Nguyen; Art Direction/ Editing by Laura U Editor Photos courtesy of ICEHOTEL

Temperatures dropping marks the start of construction for the year’s new Ice Hotel. Building a new hotel every year made of ice and snow from the Torne River proves the revolutionary abilities of the Art and Design team for Ice Hotels. A talented team of snow builders, architects, designers, and artists build sixty rooms, a church, an ice bar, the lobby, and the main hall in a temperature of minus 5 degrees Celsius. This hotel doesn’t stop at its revolutionary building materials because the Ice Hotel’s design team has to develop new themes for each hotel room every season, since the natural sun rays return the melted hotel back to the Torne River.

Ice Church 2010

Designed by Ake Larsson, the Ice Hotel’s Ice Church architecture was influenced by traditional stained glass during the Medieval times. The arched designs on the church walls compliment the transparent wall to the vault. The use of gold leaf light fixtures add a touch of warm shades to the interior.

Pictured from left to right: Tsu-Ki No Ma Suite, Otsukimi Suite, and Converse Shelter Suite.

Architects and designers begin the hotel’s seasonal process by spraying snow on steel sculptures, thereby speeding up the process of creating ice blocks and building the foundation of ice walls throughout the hotel. Only 60 themed rooms are constructed with hundreds of guests every season.
