July - September 2012

J

uly already? With our heads down hard at work here at Laura U, these hot summer months (and, yes, July through October is solidly summer in Texas) found us fast! If you can’t flee the dog days, what better way to stay cool than to spend time with the newest issue of the Laura U Mag? This issue introduces the enduring primary color spectrum, ever fabulous brass, exuberant pieces from around the globe, and our designers’ most striking finds. At the Laura U Collection, we are undergoing a transformation that will (happily) never be complete. We are amassing a new, improved, and edited collection. Of course, we will continue to offer our favorite things, like Tocca candles, Stray Dog Chandeliers, and Oscar de la Renta upholstery. But we will be scouring the globe for vintage pieces refurbished for you, by us. In store soon: BRASS ELEPHANT BOOK ENDS, VINTAGE CURTIS JERE, KNOLL EXECUTIVE CHAIRS, and more...!

This is an exciting time for us and we can’t wait to share it with you. Please enjoy a sneak peek in the following pages and happy shopping! 10 |

Shannon Ables is the creator and editor of The Simply Luxurious Life blog, as well as a freelance writer and high school English teacher. Now living in a rural town after moving from the metropolitan life in Portland, she has discovered that a simply luxurious life is something that everyone can attain if indeed one is seeking quality rather than quantity, decadence rather than frivolity, personal style instead of trendy fashions and a truly fulfilling life instead of being led around by the nose. So whether it be found in food, fashion, or home decor, contentment, pleasure and a stylishly fulfilling life can be cultivated.

What’s Hot: FEELING BRASSY Brass is an excellent way to incorporate some shine into your home without going over the top. It also ads a touch of the retro-dramatic because so many of the best pieces are vintage. Small home accents made of brass are an interesting supplement to boring bookshelves and nothing says bar mate like a retro-wheeled bar. Brass is an easy and affordable way to capture that mod-elegance of eras gone by but still remaining very on point for what is happening in design today.

LAURA U DESIGN TEAM: SUMM

We’ve been so busy working on great interiors for great clients, that sometimes we forget to think about the things that we love. For this issue of the magazine, the design team came up with our top picks and we hope you love them! I love the look of Framed Hermes Scarves! We are doing these for a client right now. They can be so versatile with the different prints and colors available. -Kristina, Vice President of Interior Design In the Missoni Outdoor Collection my favorite print is the Lusaka Midnight Bouquet with its black background and pops of bright hued florals. Most people tend to stick to neutral outdoor furniture so this is the perfect way to bring color to your outdoor space! -Robyn 38 |

12 Essential Wardrobe Trav

Written by Shannon Ables; Edited by Laura U Editors

Summer brings with it the opportunity to travel and spend time away from your regular routine. The beauty of traveling is that often we have the fortunate opportunity to visit places we have been dutifully waiting to see, or visiting locales that bring us joy and pleasure. However, if we don’t feel confident in how we are presenting ourselves, some of the fun can be depleted. And as many people are headed overseas, some may even go to London to take part in the Olympic festivities. In order to eliminate any worries, and increase the enjoyment, include these twelve items and know you are certain to look good and enjoy your new adventures even more.

Lightweight Cashmere Sweaters Whenever you are not sure of the temperatures, lightweight cashmere is a safe decision. Worn with shorts, jeans or skirts, these sweaters can be dressed up or down depending upon the occasion.

Vince Wool and Cashmere-blend Sweater, $295

Scarves A soft, oversized scarf in a bright solid color or print is a must to include in your tote on your travel expeditions. This multipurpose item can serve as an accessory, a wrap to keep you warm, a pillow on the plane or a blanket as well. Consider it an adult Linus blanket – never leave home without it and you will be confident in knowing you will fit right in if you are traveling to Europe.

Marc by Marc Jacobs Printed Scarf, $98 40|

vel Pieces A Maxi Dress Wonderful for extended air travel, lounging by the pool or enjoying an evening out in the warm summer breezes, a maxi dress has so much potential. Choose strapless, halter or spaghetti straps, cinch with a belt or sun hat, pair with beautiful sandals and you will be comfortable and certainly chic.

Tibi Color-block Sandwashed Silk Maxi Dress, $675

White Cropped Jeans Summer screams for white, so be sure to wear white cropped pants, worn with flats during the day or heels at night, pair with a nautical top and you are utte rly French-esque. (Just don’t wear a beret as well.)

Helmut Lang Mid-Rise Cropped Skinny Jeans, $195

Navy Anything Whether you choose to wear nautical tops or dresses, a navy sheath dress or navy cropped trousers, you will never go wrong with this classic color choice.

J. Crew Dapper Striped Linen-Blend Shorts, $65

41|

Over-sized Sunglasses Over-sized sunglasses for travel or every day are a must-have to not only protect the delicate skin around your eyes, but to step up your ensemble as that extra needed accessory.

Oliver Peoples Emelita Square-frame Acetate Sunglasses, $280

Bright Ballet Flats Adding a pop of color to a simple outfit can come easily enough in the flats you place on your feet. The beauty of flats is that they can be worn with skirts, jeans, shorts, dresses – you get the idea – and they are perfect for travel. Allowing you to remain stylish and in vogue, but also being very comfortable.

Tory Burch Aaden Croc-effect Leather and Metal Ballet Flats, $265

Trench Coat My coat of choice is most often a trench, and when traveling a neutral trench is best. Paired with jeans or over a dress, a trench is very flexible in its abilities and is a classic staple that is very dependable.

Burberry London Cotton-twill Trench Coat, $1,495

Jeans An item that should always be packed is a good pair of jeans, ones that provide comfort but also flatter your figure. One of the many neutral items, jeans can be dressed up or down and are perfect for looking pulled together while traveling.

J Brand Denim 818 Mid-rise Bootcut Jeans, $195 42|

Over-sized Tote Be sure to bring along an oversize tote for items that should always be with you when flying, but don’t need to be in your purse. And even if your mode of travel doesn’t take you into the friendly skies, placing reading material and even your laptop into your tote’s allows you to always keep such important items handy.

Miu Miu Cloquet Leather Tote, $2,200

Leather Jacket The beauty of a leather jacket is that while being a layering piece in your wardrobe, it can cross over to all seasons. A leather jacket can keep you warm, as well as keep you cool, and the best part is that it doesn’t wrinkle when placed in your tote or used as a place to prop your head for a quick nap.

Mulberry Bayswater Leather Biker Jacket, $935

Belts The accessory that literally and figuratively pulls it all together. Based on the dresses, coats and bottoms you will be wearing, choose a belt or two that will complement nearly every outfit that calls for a cinched waist.

Bottega Veneta Intrecciato Leather Belt, $400

A Style Collective Photography by Lacy Dagerath of More Than An Image

Located in Houston, Texas, A Style Collective is the collaboration of a fun-loving, brunette duo that finally realized there was a greater purpose for their daydreams about styling events and moments big and small. Kirbi Knop and Tina Sanford launched A Style Collective in November 2011 because they felt the Houston wedding industry lacked something a more personally unique experience. They gathered family heirlooms and items they already personally owned and combined them with new finds from local estate sales, thrift stores, and antique markets around Texas to establish the foundation of their inventory. Their goal is to continue to grow these pieces, see the joy they bring to others through unique, individual uses, and also expand their custom event design services to coordinate or to source complimentary pieces and other traditional event rentals as needed. When deciding on a name, they did not want to incorrectly label themselves as “vintage” or “eclectic” or “rental company.” The name “A Style Collective” comes from “our dream as a business in the event industry, [it] is to offer Styling and Event Design through outside the box creative direction and individual, personal décor touches that truly reflect our clients’ visions,” explains Kirbi. They do rentals, but what they really love is working with their clients on a completely custom even design package. The name is perfect for what they do and how they plan to grow in the future. The styling duo find that styling weddings where the bride, groom and their families have personal touches that they have helped her source, craft or embellish is always extra special. They truly love getting to know their clients and providing the special details for monumental life occasions such as weddings or showers . They love to be able to take large impact, focal pieces and pair them with additional décor items that are more subtle but still compliment the overall atmosphere nicely. For instance, objects like lace, mirror, mercury glass, clear glass, and an abundance of lit pillar candles or candelabras are always timeless, romantic, and flexible no matter what your color palette or venue environment may be. When most people think ‘cake table’ or ‘dessert display’ they could let their imagination only go as far as the traditional sterling silver cake stand provided by most bakers or a standard eight foot banquet table with ivory linen and white trays of sweets. They love to bring unexpected, aesthetically complimenting ideas into play that reflect more personal, individual touches rather than the norm. Color plays a big role in how they execute their vision and bring whimsy to the tables of their clients. 48|

A Style Collective: Tips for Your Own Soiree

 For starters, we encourage brides, hostesses and anyone preparing for a special event or photo shoot to really visualize how they want everything to look or what mood they want to evoke for your guests. Then, try to really devote time to thinking outside of the box in terms of how you can offer creative, personal touches for everyone to enjoy.  Define your event with words, terms, and color palettes that can provide you a starting point for the rest of your décor planning. Then allow yourself to build upon that with décor and display objects from flowers, lines, to unique catering and lounge areas.  And of course, plan, plan plan! Create a set-up timeline and organized list of tasks to aide you and any helpers with a specific decorating plan that will give you plenty of time to style the event. Waiting until the last minute will stress you out. Don’t forget to add that extra WOW factor every chance you can, but also remember that a relaxed hostess and comfortable guests is just as important. Kirbi and Tina find inspiration from seeing their clients happy, whether it is a bride and groom or executives at a corporate event. Kirbi elaborates, “when the styling for the event is complete, and we take a breath and look around at our production it gives us such pleasure to know we were part of other people’s satisfactions and were able to bring our client’s visions into reality. No matter the size of the function, whether it was a wedding for 300 or a styled editorial photo shoot, we know we have given it our all and we always hope it shows through our dedication to inspire.”

Here at Laura U we are constantly reading blogs to stay up to the moment on what is trending in design and the fashion world. One of our favorite style blogs to visit on a daily basis is La Dolce Vita. Between the wonderful design inspiration, fabulous fashion and amazing travel, what’s not to love? We caught up with the brains behind the blog, the lovely Paloma Contreras, to find out how she got her start and what inspires her. What inspired you to start your wildly successful blog, La Dolce Vita? I started my blog five years ago when I was still a high school Spanish teacher. While on summer vacation, I grew restless and sought a creative outlet. I had read a couple of personal blogs and thought, “I could do that”, so I set out to start my own. Originally, I posted about random things from personal essays to recaps of trips I had taken. La Dolce Vita has evolved in so many ways since its inception, most notably in the fact that the content is now primarily style based. Each day, I focus on inspiring interior design and fashion, fabulous travel, and interesting people who are making things happen. What keeps you inspired? I feel most inspired when I am traveling. There is something so freeing about a change of scenery. I feel like I can really relax and take in all of the wonderful details around me when I am visiting one of my favorite cities or discovering a new destination. 55|

What do you do to unwind and relax in your spare time in Houston? My husband and I love to go to the movies so we often have date nights at the Alamo Drafthouse. I a favorite shopping destinations around town like A Bientot, Kuhl-Linscomb, Area, and Boxwood Interior so I love hanging out at home with our sweet pup, Tate.

What is your favorite room in your home? And why? I really love my formal living room. It is very much of a reflection of my husband and I. The framed ma of travel and the mix of items is very “us”.

We always see other amazing blogger’s “Dream Home” featured in your blog. Can you give us a pee home would look like? What style and tone would you want to come across in your own dream home I feel like my design sensibility could be defined as modern traditional with a touch of glamour. I love patterns, vivid hues, and interesting touches. 56|

also love visiting some of my rs. I am a bit of a homebody,

What is the most exciting opportunity that has come along since you started your blog? I pretty much owe my career to my blog. Before I started it and for the first year that I wrote my blog, I was teaching high school Spanish. Since then, I have had some amazing opportunities come my way—freelancing for companies like American Express and Hilton Luxury Brands, covering events in Park City, Los Angeles, and Palm Beach, and features in several publications including the New York Times, New York Magazine, Houston’s 002, Better Homes & Gardens, and the Washington Post. My blog allowed me to tap into my passion and hone new talents. It’s given me the opportunity to connect with like-minded people around the world and has lead me from being a teacher to a full time blogger, then an editor-in-chief of a digital magazine, and ultimately helped me land my current role as Director of Marketing for a company in the luxury home furnishings business.
