Tuesday– 6:30 PM - 9:30 PM

Instructor:

Candy Simms

Class Fee:

$ 25

Finished Size:

Varies

Level:

All Levels

Description: Do you have at least one quilt top completed and don't know how to proceed? Do you want to 'finish it yourself' rather than sending it to a professional quilter? This class is for those who want to be able to quilt and bind their own quilts, but don't know how or want a little guidance while they attempt it for the first time. Techniques: Prepping backing and batting for quilting, layering the quilt sandwich and pinbasting sandwich together, simple straight-line quilting ideas; squaring quilt after quilting; demonstration of easy binding technique. Supplies:

 

Completed quilt top – twin size or smaller *

Backing fabric - should measure at least 6-8" longer and wider than quilt top. If the quilt is wider than 36", then an additional length of backing fabric is required. 60" x 60" quilt top requires 4 yards of 45" fabric; a 'twin size' (66" x 105") quilt requires 6 1/2 yards. Binding fabric - for a quilt twin size or less (66" x 105") 3/4 yd fabric should be sufficient. Thread to blend with your quilt top (I prefer cotton thread)

            

Batting that is at least 6-8” longer and wider than quilt top (preferably 100% cotton or 80/20 cotton/polyester).

Two or three already wound bobbins, so you don’t have to stop to rewind bobbins Extra needles: size 80/12 or 90/14 Walking foot (recommended) Edgestitch foot (recommended for "stitch in the ditch' to machine-finish binding); some people prefer to hand stitch back of binding but machine stitching is much faster. ¼” foot for sewing binding to quilt Rotary cutter and mat (larger mat is better for this application) Rulers for rotary cutter (12” square ruler or larger; 24” x 6” long ruler or larger) Blue Painter tape (1” wide is good; 3” is too wide) – used for taping backing to worktable and to mark stitching lines as needed Quilter’s bent safety pins. I prefer the smaller ones but some prefer larger pins. I purchase 50 or more at a time as they are less expensive that way. Kwik Clip tool or spoon. A grapefruit spoon is best or other spoon usually used for eating. This is to protect your fingers when pin-basting the quilt together. Removable marking pencil/pen, tailor’s chalk, or chalk pencil – for marking lines on the quilt top

* Most quilt tops smaller than twin size should be ready for squaring and binding by end of class.

Thursday workshops Flying Geese Log Cabin Class—Th3

Thursday- 8:30 AM - 4:30 PM

Instructor:

Laura Schneider

Class Fee:

$ 20

Finished Size:

Variable

Finished in Class: 1—4 Blocks Level:

Intermediate

Description: A beautiful, soothing variation on a traditional Log Cabin, this version adds flying geese to the half-log cabin blocks to bring movement to the design of the quilt. Students may choose to piece only a single block (they make lovely pillows) or create a 4, 9, or 12-block small quilt; if you’re feeling inspired, go for a queen- or king-sized project that will add WOW to any room! We will talk about fabric choices and color placement for future versions as well as learning how to use the 45-degree angle mark on your ruler for perfect alignment; we’ll do some chain piecing and learn a nifty trick for cutting those chains apart (hint: it involves that third hand humans have somehow never developed!), and we’ll enjoy watching each other’s projects come together! The pattern, chocolate, and a relaxed attitude will be provided by the instructor as part of your class fee. Techniques: Rotary cutting, chain piecing, inserting corners, using 45-degree ruler, and color placement. Supplies: NOTE: First Fabric Measurement is for 1—4 Blocks. (For Queen Size Use Measurements in Parentheses ):

 

½ yard of solid or tone-on-tone for geese (5 yards)

Ruler with 45-degree angle clearly marked – an 8” or 8.5” square will cut most of your little stuff, plus a 12-18” ruler at least 2.5” wide for the long stuff

Basic Sewing Supplies including pins, thread, snips, rotary cutter, small cutting mat, sewing machine, pencil and paper, cushion, whatever you need for comfort in the classroom.

2.5” wide strips for building the blocks: you need 5 colors, and the longest pieces you will cut from them (2 of each) will be 11” long, so you can use 1 strip per color [be sure they clearly go from light to dark and coordinate with your solid geese] (½ yard center, ⅔ yard first round, ¾ yard second round, 1 yard third round, 1.5 yards fourth round, 2.5 yards fifth round)

Thursday workshops Stripes Become Squares Class—Th5

Thursday- 8:30 AM - 4:30 PM

Instructor:

Sue Dee

Class Fee:

$ 25

Finished Size:

44” x 52”

Finished in Class: 50% - 100% Level:

All Levels

Description: In this class we will take a single piece of striped fabric and make a gorgeous quilt. No need to worry about what goes together because it will all be cut from one piece. The size and variety of stripes in your fabric will determine what your quilt looks likes. Narrow stripes are more forgiving when trying to match them but wider and a variety of colors of stripes will give you a quilt that will really pop. Please don’t prewash, we want the finish of the fabric to help us as we line up the stripes so that they will match when we make the blocks. This is a quick and easy pattern with the possibility of completing the quilt within the class or at least getting more than half done. Directions are for a throw quilt but you can add borders after class to make it larger or buy more fabric to start with. If you want to make something larger you may contact the Extension Office and the instructor will let you know how much fabric you will need.

Techniques: Sewing bias seams, matching stripes, cutting stripe fabric, quarter inch seams, balanced arrangement of color and blocks. Supplies: .

      

3 yards of interesting striped fabric – DO NOT PREWASH Thread Rotary Cutter with sharp blade and cutting mat 10 inch or more square up ruler 6” x 18” ruler Sewing machine with a nice even straight stitch Scissors, Thread Catcher

Friday workshops Using Your Quick Curves Ruler Class—F4

Friday- 8:30 AM - 4:30 PM

Instructor:

Laura Schneider

Class Fee:

$ 25

Finished Size:

Variable—20” block in class

Finished in Class: 20” block Level:

Intermediate

Description: Have you always loved the look of curved piecing, but been hesitant to try it? This class will use the Quick Curves ruler by Sew Kind of Wonderful to have you adding lovely curved elements to your projects in no time! We will start with some basic cutting and stitching to get familiar with the ruler, then cut and create a lovely 20” block using a free pattern from SKW. Time permitting, we’ll discuss some of the many Quick Curves projects the instructor has done and add to your skills for later use at home! Techniques: Cutting with the specialty ruler, curved piecing, trimming with the ruler, block construction, finishing techniques. Supplies:

 

Quick-Curves ruler from Sew Kind of Wonderful (the original, NOT the mini)

For our afternoon project: ¼ yard (NOT fat quarters) each of 2 coordinating colors plus ⅓ yard for background. It absolutely does not matter whether your background is dark and your fabrics are light or vice versa. This is your project, play as you like! Again, good-quality fabric is HIGHLY recommended. (If you want to add borders, as in the sample, you will need to add ¼ yard for that.)

Basic Sewing Supplies including – thread, snips, rotary cutter, small cutting mat, sewing machine, chocolate, pencil and paper, cushion, whatever you need for comfort in the classroom. YOU WILL NOT NEED PINS!

Fabric: We are going to start the morning playing, so bring two nicely-contrasting fat quarters* of GOOD QUALITY cotton (no offense intended, but you need the higher thread count and longer-staple cotton of high-quality fabric for this project. Sewing curves is tough enough without giving yourself the headache of fabric that won’t behave) for our practice. Note: * Scraps will also do as long as you can cut six 6.5” squares from them.
