HAVE A

Wild Time LIVING TREASURES WILD ANIMAL PARK

It takes a compassionate, dedicated team of employees to successfully provide a memorable experience for families. For more than two decades, Tom Guiher, his family and the team at Living Treasures Wild Animal Park have done just that. Living Treasures provides a unique experience for kids of all ages to get up close and interact with creatures of all shapes and sizes.

L A U R E L H I G H L A N D S .O R G

Owner Tom Guiher has always loved animals. As a kid, he grew up on a farm with numerous horses, cows and chickens. His interest in animals expanded from farm animals to exotics after he saw an advertisement for a squirrel monkey on the back of his Boy Scout magazine. So much so that he collected enough cans to buy one for himself.

12

With the number of exotics living in his house growing, Guiher decided that he wanted to share his passion with the public and showcase his animals, some that people only read about and see on television. On Memorial Day weekend of 1992, Tom opened his first Living Treasures Wild Animal Park in northern Pennsylvania, which was followed by the Laurel Highlands location in 1998. The apple didn’t fall far from the tree. Ten years later, Tom’s daughter, Fawn Dumbauld, and her husband, Matt, became general managers.

“We are a family-owned and operated business,” says Guiher. “And it’s important for us to create an atmosphere where other families can bring their kids, grandkids, nieces, nephews or even their friends. We want to create memories that will last forever.” With Tom introducing exotic animals into his kids’ lives at an early age, it seemed normal to them. Fawn says she fondly remembers growing up in a house full of unique animals. “My younger brother had a creative writing assignment and he wrote about our binturongs,” Fawn recalls. “And his teacher pulled me out of class to ask me questions because they thought that he was making it up.” At Living Treasures, visitors get the chance to reach out and touch wildlife, give the animals a snack and take pictures. Furry friends that visitors can meet at the park include marmosets, fennec foxes and the popular two-toed sloths.

A TASTE OF LAUREL HIGHLANDS

History WEST OVERTON VILLAGE

laurelhighlands.org/westoverton

After a 100-year hiatus, the whiskey will be flowing once again at West Overton Village. Perhaps best known as the birthplace of 19th century industrialist and financier Henry Clay Frick, West Overton was the original distilling site for Old Overholt Rye Whiskey until Prohibition began in 1920.

In 1800, Henry Overholt, his wife Maria and a group of 30 people moved from eastern Pennsylvania to the state’s southwestern corner to settle at present-day West Overton. Shortly thereafter, other Mennonite families joined the Overholts to create a rather large self-sustaining farming community and village. One of the first items built on the property was a small distillery in order to make rye whiskey for trading with other nearby settlers. In 1810, Henry’s son Abraham began selling whiskey commercially. Since then, the company’s brand, Old Overholt, has become the world’s longest continuously-operating whiskey brand. Abraham’s daughter Elizabeth married John W. Frick, a gristmill worker. In 1849, their son Henry Clay Frick was born in the spring house, which is adjacent to the Overholt family home. As an adult, Frick played a major role in the formation of U.S. Steel, financed the construction of the Pennsylvania Railroad and was a founding member of the South Fork Fishing and Hunting Club, site of the catastrophic Johnstown Flood of 1889.

Today, visitors can tour the Overholts’ original home, step foot in the spring house in which Frick was born and explore the Distillery Museum, which once housed both the gristmill and distillery. Eighteen of the original buildings still stand today, along with features like the big barn, gardens, Overholt Room and mansion front yard, which double as wedding venues. At West Overton Village, couples have the option of two unique and distinct rooms: a beautiful rustic barn and the Overholt Room, a charming setting with partially-exposed brick walls. The garden and lawn in front of the homestead are picture perfect places for an intimate outdoor ceremony. Now an official site on the American Whiskey Trail, West Overton has come full circle. A tour of the site offers visitors an experience complete with history, spirits and celebrations.

Guided village tours are available five days a week May through October.

W E S T O V E RT O N V I L L AG E

In summer 2019, West Overton Distilling Company will open its doors in what was formerly a stock barn. Visitors will be able to see the distillery process up close, sample the unaged whiskey

made onsite and eventually purchase a bottle to enjoy at home. The second floor of the distillery will be a loft that can host small events of up to 40 people, perfect for cocktail parties, bridal showers and more.

Advanced reservations are required. Groups, seniors, military and students receive a discounted rate.

REBUILDING IT THE

Wright Way POLYMATH PARK

In his lifetime, America’s most prominent architect, Frank Lloyd Wright, designed more than 1,000 structures and oversaw the construction of 532 of them before his death in 1959. With achievements such as Fallingwater, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum and Taliesen West, along with a legacy nearly unmatched decades later, it’s safe to say Wright was passionate, hardworking and brilliant.

L A U R E L H I G H L A N D S .O R G

WRIGHT'S LEGACY

16

Sixty years after his death, Wright’s legacy lives on, but not just at his landmarks and in architecture schools across the world. It lives on with Tom and Heather Papinchak, owners of Polymath Park, an architectural park tucked away in the Laurel Highlands. Here, Wright fans can tour and stay overnight in two of his designs, including the newly opened Mäntylä, and two homes designed by his apprentice. When the newly-wed Papinchaks moved to the Laurel Highlands in 2000, they had no idea what was hidden amongst the trees on the neighboring property. One afternoon, Tom was exploring the area when he happened upon two small homes, one of which was inhabited by college students who certainly enjoyed the home’s privacy. An architecture fan and construction professional, Tom instantly knew these homes were special. He was right. These were the Balter and Blum houses, designed by Wright apprentice Peter Berndtson, originally designed and

built as summer escapes for friends of the Kaufmanns who owned nearby Fallingwater. A couple years after his discovery, Tom made contact with the property owner who ultimately sold the homes and the surrounding acreage to the Papinchaks in what Heather calls “the first sign of a predestined path” for the young family. Fast forward to 2006, and destiny comes calling again. This time in the form of the Duncan House. A group of private investors brought the home from its original site in Lisle, Ill., to Johnstown Pa., where they intended to rebuild it and develop a botanical garden. Unfortunately for the investors, the plan fell through and the home found its way to Polymath Park, where it was meticulously rebuilt. Since then, the Duncan House has been one of only a handful of Wright homes offering overnight lodging, making it an extremely popular experience. But destiny wasn’t quite done yet.

TOP LEFT: Duncan

House House Interior LEFT: Construction of Mäntylä ABOVE: Balter

“Along every step, everything seemed to fall into place like it was predestined,” says Heather. “It was all simply meant to be.” A visit to Polymath Park is immersive, with home tours, delicious dining onsite at the Wright-inspired restaurant Tree Tops and overnight lodging. There is no Wi-Fi on the property, but this done with the intent to help guests disconnect from everyday life and reconnect with nature and loved ones.

Did You Know? There are four Frank Lloyd Wright-designed homes in the Laurel Highlands. Fallingwater and Kentuck Knob are located just minutes from each other and a short drive away from Polymath Park.

Fallingwater = 23 miles from Polymath Park. Kentuck Knob = 29 miles from Polymath Park.

In 2016, the Papinchaks received a call from a gentleman looking for advice about relocating a Wright home. Mäntylä in Cloquet, Minn., had been on the market for many years and was in danger of demolition due to encroaching development. The property owners donated the home and all of its original furnishings to the Usonian Preservation Inc., a non-profit associated with Polymath Park, in hopes that Mäntylä would find a new life. Thanks to Tom and Heather, it did. The L-shaped home with a distinct prow is now tucked away under the towering trees of Polymath Park.

A TRIP DOWN

Memory Lane LINCOLN HIGHWAY EXPERIENCE In the early 1900s, automobile travel skyrocketed. However, most roads, with the exception of city streets, were unsuitable to drive on, leading to the creation of the Lincoln Highway in 1913. The route was the first transcontinental highway in the United States. Today, it stretches from New York City’s Times Square to

L A U R E L H I G H L A N D S .O R G

San Francisco, with 70 miles weaving through Pennsylvania's Laurel Highlands.

20

A beautiful stone house that was once a stagecoach stop on the Lincoln Highway in Latrobe is now home to the Lincoln Highway Experience. The interactive museum allows visitors to travel back in time and learn about this historic road and the interesting sights along the way.

Turnpike exit in Irwin to serve truck drivers and tourists. In its heyday, the diner featured high-end details such as solid mahogany, marble, porcelain, copper, pocket doors and leather stools and cushions. It makes sense why it was described as the "Cadillac of diners.”

In 2018, the Lincoln Highway Experience introduced two new exhibit rooms in the historic building, as well as a new expansion that is now home to original retro memorabilia, such as the original Serro’s Diner.

After 20 years of service, the diner was sold and moved twice. In 2003, the Senator John Heinz History Center donated the diner to the Lincoln Highway Heritage Corridor, who had the diner meticulously restored before installing it in the Lincoln Highway Experience.

What fun would a road trip be without great food? At the end of the 19th century, lunch wagons, similar to present-day food trucks, made way for diners. Serro’s Diner, measuring roughly the size of a train car, was purchased by the Serro brothers in 1938, who intentionally placed the diner at the new Pennsylvania

The diner is certainly a beauty, but visitors can do more than just marvel at it. After a tour of the museum, guests are invited to take a seat in the diner and enjoy a slice of pie and a cup of coffee; both treats are included in the cost of admission.

During a long road trip, travelers also needed a place to stay and gas to fill their cars. Hence the creation of facilities like filling stations and tourist cabins. On display at the museum are 6-foottall vintage gas pumps, a facsimile of a 1937 filling station, a pristine 1937 Packard-120 and a restored 1938 tourist cabin that was once located near present-day Idlewild and SoakZone.

MAKING A

Splash IMMERSION RESEARCH GOES GLOBAL

L A U R E L H I G H L A N D S .O R G

As a young girl growing up in the river town of Confluence, Kara Weld spent countless days paddling on the water. Perhaps paddling was in her blood as her parents owned the local kayaking school, Riversport. It was here that Kara found her passion and her husband, John, who worked for Kara’s parents. That same passion guided Kara as a three-time slalom kayaking national champion, narrowly missing the Olympic team.

22

After Kara stepped away from professional competitive paddling in 1997, the couple began tinkering with a clothing line.

Immersion Research gear ranges from shorts and fleece layering to ultra-durable kayaking-specific dry wear.

"We were both ready to get on with real jobs, but John suggested making kayaking gear,” says Kara. “I told him he was insane and that we knew a lot about kayaking, not about kayaking gear. But John assured me that we would figure it out.”

Now, paddlers all over the world can purchase Immersion Research gear with distribution centers in Canada, Russia, Europe, Japan, Australia and New Zealand.

John asked for a sewing machine for Christmas, and took lessons from a friend’s mother. “It is about as homegrown as you can imagine.” Their acquaintance asked if he could sell a few pairs at a nearby shop, word of mouth got around and it all took off. Since production requires seven machines to make one pair of shorts, the Welds’ workspace needed to expand. They bought a schoolhouse in Confluence along the Casselman River and turned it into a sewing factory. Today, Immersion Research does everything from design and prototype development to shipping, receiving and repairs.

Immersion Research products can be found locally at Wilderness Voyageurs in Ohiopyle, Riversport and Immersion Research’s new retail store, located on the first floor of the schoolhouse in Confluence. “It turns out that Confluence and the Laurel Highlands is the best place in the world for kayaking. It takes growing up and moving away and looking back to realize that. Something that is right there in front of you.”

HOW

MAPLE PRODUCTION Somerset County, in the southeastern corner of the Laurel Highlands, is Pennsylvania’s largest producer of maple products. In order to produce maple sugar, there needs to be an abundance of maple trees and the perfect climate. Springtime weather in the region is ideal because of its cold nights and warm days. That alternating weather cycle, from freezing to thawing, is what changes the atmospheric pressure in the trees to allow sap to flow out of them. The first documented maple sugar production in Somerset County was in 1762. Sugar camps in the region have always been family-owned businesses, passed down through multiple generations. It is ideal to start the tapping process in early spring, when days are warm and nighttime temperatures are below freezing. Trees are tapped by drilling a hole for a spile, a tool that resembles a spout. Spiles were originally made of wood, eventually metal and now plastic. The sap drips from the spile and into a keeler, a bucket that hangs from a hook on the spile. “Keeler” is a term specific to Somerset County, influenced by its early German settlers. Today, the sap flows from the spile, through plastic tubing and is deposited in a large tank. Many years ago, farmers would have traveled through the woods, stopping at every tree and manually dumping each keeler into a large tank. With maple production primarily limited to a handful of states located in New England, Somerset County stands out and takes great pride in its maple production. Visitors can find Somerset County maple syrup at local farmers’ markets and the sugar camps where it is produced.

BURNT SUGAR CAKE BURNT SUGAR SYRUP Heat 2 cups maple sugar over low heat until melted; Resist from stirring too much. Remove from heat and slowly add 1 cup hot water. Stir together well. Return pan to heat and continue cooking another 5 minutes over low heat. Syrup will be thin when hot and thickens as it cools. Remove from heat; set aside to cool. Store in refrigerator in covered container. BURNT SUGAR CAKE 3 cups all-purpose flour 2 teaspoons baking powder ½ teaspoon salt ¾ cup butter, room temperature 1 ½ cups sugar 2 eggs - yolks/whites divided 1 cup burnt sugar syrup ¾ cup milk Preheat oven to 3500. Combine flour, baking powder and salt and set aside. In another bowl, combine room temperature butter and sugar. Cream together then add two egg yolks and beat again. In a small bowl, beat egg whites until fluffy. To the bowl with flour, add the creamed butter, sugar, egg yolks, burnt sugar syrup and milk. Beat well. Gently fold in the egg whites. Do not beat again. Divide into two round, greased cake pans. Bake at 3500 for 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted near the center comes out clean. Cool and frost with Burnt Sugar Icing. BURNT SUGAR ICING 6 ounces powdered sugar Burnt sugar syrup ¼ cup butter, room temperature 1 teaspoon vanilla Milk or water as needed Combine and beat till smooth and spreadable. If your icing is too stiff, add a bit of milk or water. Frost cake and decorate with pecan halves. Serve with vanilla ice cream.

Shredder COUNTRY

AIRTIGHT INFLATABLES In 1971, Tom Love was a river guide living the dream in the small town of Ohiopyle. With extensive experience in repairing and crafting boats under his belt, Love was approached by his friend Tom Clark, who suggested that they collaborate to create a boat that would accommodate river photographers. They needed to make something light and sturdy. Together, they came up with an idea: a boat with a fiberglass frame. Love made the tubes, but Clark never made the fiberglass pole.

L A U R E L H I G H L A N D S .O R G

“I said ‘What the hell am I going to do with these tubes?’” Love recalled. “I guess I’m gonna finish this the way I want.”

24

And the Shredder was born. In 1992, Love committed to production and needed a brand. He held a contest with his friends to name the boat; his neighbor won the contest with her entry of “Shredder.” In exchange for the name, she received a boat for the price of materials. The first Shredder was tested on the loop section of the Lower Youghiogheny River in Ohiopyle by Love and his friend. Love still has a video of the first run on VHS. It shows the two men running the iconic Ohiopyle Falls, which was illegal back then. The shredder’s first rapid rally was successful. The boat was dried off, boxed up and shipped to Australia.

The Shredder is unique because it was the first highperformance inflatable boat without a metal frame, can be compactly folded and is self-bailing. Believe it or not, there used to be a designated rafter with a bucket, bailing water out of the boat while going through a rapid. With hundreds crafted annually, the Shredder has made a lasting impact on the boating community. A favorite among seasoned paddlers, the Shredder can be spotted on rivers all over the world.

MEET THE

Sirofchucks MAIN EXHIBIT GALLERY AND ART CENTER

In 1994, the newlyweds came to Ligonier in search of land to build their family home. The couple shares a passion for creative arts, but each expresses their talent in different ways. During their search, they found a brick Victorian on West Main Street that would become the home of Main Exhibit Gallery.

In lieu of stains, every piece is naturally finished with hand-rubbed oil. While his pieces have been shipped all over the world, Paul has also crafted furniture for many businesses and organizations in the Laurel Highlands including Green Gables, Seven Springs Mountain Resort, Ligonier Valley Library and Powdermill Nature Reserve.

Paul has always been a builder, having grown up around it. His father had a workshop in their basement, where Paul built his first piece of furniture at age five. While working at an architectural firm in Pittsburgh, Paul was often thinking of his woodworking shop at home.

Mandy has always been fascinated by the art of stained glass ever since she wrote a paper about it in high school. She and Paul had taken a stained glass seminar together, but she had little free time to practice her craft between running the shop and homeschooling their daughter, Clair. Today, she works on stained glass projects for clients in the basement of the gallery.

“They would ask me to stay late or work on the weekend, but I was always ready to go home to work on furniture,” says Paul. He refers to his style as “organic contemporary” because of the rough edges that make the contemporary furniture look natural.

TOWER OF

Voices AT FLIGHT 93 NATIONAL MEMORIAL On September 11, 2001, four commercial airliners were hijacked in a planned attack against the United States. Two airliners were flown into the World Trade Center Twin Towers and a third aircraft into the Pentagon. A fourth aircraft, United Airlines Flight 93, crashed into an open field in the Laurel Highlands near the small town of Shanksville, after the passengers and crew stormed the cockpit and derailed the plane from its intended target, Washington, D.C.

A FIELD OF HONOR FOREVER

26

Established by President George W. Bush in September 2002, Flight 93 National Memorial is a serene place of remembrance and honor at the crash site of Flight 93. The memorial is now complete, with its final piece in place, The Tower of Voices. The Tower of Voices is the first monument that visitors see after entering the memorial off of Route 30. The impressive structure stands at 93-feet tall and contains 40 chimes to represent the eternal voices of the 40 passengers and crew members of Flight 93. White pines surround the tower in a concentric pattern, creating an illusion that the trees are soundwaves radiating from the Tower.

The tower’s C-shape and design allows the sound to be amplified from its open side. This also gives visitors the unique opportunity to stand in the middle of the Tower, look up and observe the chimes hanging above. The wind-activated chimes vary in sizes from five to 10 feet and each has a unique pitch that contributes to the collective tune. There is much more to see after witnessing the Tower of Voices. The next stop at Flight 93 National Memorial is the Visitor Center, where visitors can explore a chronological display of the day’s events with artifacts from the crash and learn about the flight and its passengers.

The activities on Sugarloaf Mountain are endless. Hike (or drive) to Baughman Rock, the crown jewel of Sugarloaf Mountain, situated on the third highest point in Pennsylvania. From this impressive lookout, you can see the Laurel Ridge and the Middle Youghiogheny, Pennsylvania’s deepest river gorge. The incredible, diverse terrain is perfect for hiking and mountain biking, as well as cross-country skiing, sledding and snowmobiling.

Meadow Run is widely known for its natural rock waterslides, but be sure to continue hiking upstream! You will find areas for rock climbing, extraordinary rock outcroppings and Flat Rock, a great place to picnic with your feet in the river. Another secret stop is the Cascades, a large waterfall with multiple ledges that you can directly hike to.

7 LAUREL HIGHLANDS HIKING TRAIL Mile zero of the 70-mile Laurel Highlands Hiking Trail is located in Ohiopyle. The first 4.5 miles from Ohiopyle are some of the most challenging of the trail. If you’re up for it, park at Ferncliff and get to it! Or, hike down into Ohiopyle and finish your adventure with a cold beer or an ice cream cone.

8 FERNCLIFF PENINSULA Ferncliff Peninsula is a 100-acre botanical reserve with its own unique ecosystem and four hiking trails. The easy to moderate trails range from the 0.1-mile Buffalo Nut Trail to the 1.7-mile Ferncliff Trail, which offers excellent views of the Ohiopyle Falls and whitewater rapids of the Youghiogheny River. Since it is surrounded by water, the peninsula is home to flora that you will not see anywhere else in the region.
