Introduction To celebrate 60 years of Irish and Finnish diplomatic relations, I wanted to focus on the people of each nation and how we can find humour and connection in both our differences and similarities. As two nations with similar histories across the last century, we express ourselves so differently and yet we complement each other so well. To apply this concept to an exhibition space, I focused on a typographic sensory approach. The structure of the space is very simple in order to make it adaptable to a multitude of spaces. Use of screens and projections throughout means there is a much lower need for printed material, and also allows for the content to be updated regularly and cheaply. To create a more complete sensory experience, soundshowers will be used to play audio connected to the typographic pieces playing on the screens. Seating will be available inside also in the form of a bench to allow time to sit and observe the exhibition in it’s entirety, as the screens will transition through various pieces of text.

Exhibition Structure and Placement The exhibition is situated on the green space located at the front of the Lexicon in Dun Laoghaire. It is an enclosed square room, measuring 8mx8m. It is not overly large to allow for a full sensory experience and impact, and also means it can be located in spaces smaller than this. The ceiling is 3m high, to allow for the soundshowers.

Size and Fabrication I chose my materials with both adaptability and eco-friendliness in mind. The informative elements of the exhibition are projected on a screen to allow for changes in content and to reduce print waste. The outside of the exhibition is covered in eco-friendly natural materials that would both historically have been used in Finland and Ireland. The outside of the exhibition is symbolic of our past, while inside represents our present and future. It also serves to showcase attractive, sustainable building materials.
Packed straw bales make up the roof of the outdoor exhibition. Straw bales are made from the waste of the agricultural industry. It is a substitute for lumber and still sequesters carbon. It is also resistant to fire and provides excellent insulation.
The outer walls are made up of bark siding. Bark is a highly durable, attractive, economical, and sustainable option for siding and shingling. Bark used for building comes from trees that are already cut. Traditionally the bark is discarded as debris, burned, or in some cases used to make mulch. Using bark as a building material rescues it from this fate and provides a highly sustainable alternative to traditional siding and shingling materials. .

Wayfinding & Signage The wayfinding and signage for this exhibition are quite simple, using simple line and text with a few symbols. Large wall graphics are used both to direct people towards the exhibition and also label the area(s) of any given event. Depending on the venue, small signposts may also be used, particularly if there are multiple sites nearby for one event or to direct towards facilities i.e the restroom. On large scale buildings projections are also available to advertise the events taking place.
