Allow us to Introduce ourselves....
System
It is with pleasure that we introduce our 2016 Ireland Genetics Dairy Sire Brochure in Australia and Tasmania in conjunction with our local partner Genetic Choice. During these times of challenging milk prices, it is now more than ever, that as an industry, dairy farmers are focusing on maximising milk value sold by way of optimising milk solid output through a lower cost, low input grazing system. In Ireland it is widely recognised that “grazed grass is 4 times cheaper than your next cheapest feed”. Over the last 15 years, through the application of EBI, via our Ireland

Program
Genetics breeding programme, we have revolutionised the dairy industry in Ireland. With the application of a highly sophisticated, data proven, genomic programme we have successfully transitioned from a high input, fertility challenged, high volume production dairy cow to a low input grazing, highly fertile and more profitable cow. We at Ireland Genetics and Genetic Choice look forward to working with you the Australian and Tasmanian dairy farmer and believe we can deliver significant value via our genetics.

40 new Dairy Bulls added to the IG Breeding Programme on an annual basis
Fig. 1 results of a detailed trial carried out at the Moorpark dairy research facility. Cows analysed using only their fertility index. • Yield was similar for both groups • The high group in calf quicker by 28 days • Cycle for the low group was 4 days longer One fifth of the low group had silent heats and 14% didn’t even ovulate In fig 2 we see a group of 3000 cows from several different farms broken down between bottom, medium and top EBI for Production (milk) & fertility. • High group 250kg more milk solids • High group -19 days calving interval • 91% gets to 4th lactation vs just 52% EBI delivers optimum performing cows for our production system. 3
What can Ireland offer grazing farms in Tasmania & Australia? • Low cost production from pasture • Milk solids key to maximising market returns • Ireland has spent 15 years solving the fertility issue • Fertility essential to low cost seasonal milk production • Maximising production of milk solids/hectare is key to sustainability
• Ireland now World leaders in pasture Genetics • Cows must perform on grazed pasture • We grow similar amounts of grass/year – 8-13 T/ha • Vast majority of our product is processed • Both countries seen as producers of clean green food • Very similar climate – rainfall, temp, seasons
Profit focused Research & Science by Dr Pat Dillon, Teagasc, Moorepark (a summary) The ideal grazing dairy cow must • achieve high output per unit area from grazed grass , • have a propensity for high grass dry matter intake • be fertile and healthy • be robust to fluctuations in feed quality and quantity • be easy care and easy calving • be able to easily go back in calf • have low incidence of lameness, mastitis and other diseases
The Irish Economic Breeding Index (EBI) was developed by a group of world leading international scientists in 2001 with the goal of breeding the ideal Grazing cow. Unlike most international breeding indexes, • the EBI is reviewed annually, in consultation with the industry, to ensure it is up-to-date and pertinent to future dairy production systems. • The relevance of the EBI is continually and rigorously evaluated in both controlled
Genomics
Genomic selection has revolutionised animal breeding in Ireland. It allows us to fast-track this process by looking directly at the DNA of young sires and this method of evaluation has proven a more accurate method of selection than traditional methods. This method of evaluation for selection is further substantiated by a Teagasc Moorepark research study, now in year 4 of operation. In fact, Ireland is one of the countries in the world with the longest history of genomic selection at a national level. In summary, genomic selection in dairy cattle in Ireland is identifying the genetically elite animals suitable for grazing production systems. The daughterbased proofs of bulls several years after their original genomic evaluation is stacking up very well compared to their original genomic proof.

research studies at Teagasc (Next Gen herd) and across a range of different herd environments • The EBI includes “easy care traits” like fertility, calving ease, mastitis, lameness, temperament and milking speed
“Genomic selection first became widely adopted in the dairy cattle industry where breeders found that they could identify bulls with high genetic value early in life, rather than waiting years to see if they produced offspring with required traits saving much time and money.” Professor Mike Goddard,
