Laurence King Autumn 2019
Dear Bookseller, All publishers try to create books that are unique in some way and this Autumn we have a particularly strong list in that it has a number of books which are ‘firsts’ in one way or another. I am very proud to be publishing Philip Guston by Robert Storr. Written by one of the world’s leading art critics, it is the first major book to cover the entire career of an artist whose work is seen as increasingly important, as is indicated the major retrospective exhibition that will start at the National Gallery of Art in Washington in 2020, before travelling to a number of other major museums. Louise Bourgeois was a notably private person, but towards the end of her life, for the first and only time, she allowed a photographer to capture her working in her studio and relaxing at home. Jean-François Jaussaud’s work is reproduced in Louise Bourgeois: An Intimate Portrait, a singular book, which will be warmly welcomed by her many fans. From Above: The Story of Aerial Photography is, surprisingly, the first book to track this subject - from the extraordinary photographs of Paris taken from a balloon by Nadar to the pictures taken from satellites and drones today. Drag by Simon Doonan is unique in that it is the first to tell the complete story of drag through its different ‘tribes’ in a text that is as funny as it is informative. But there are also books that follow up on the success of earlier ones, particularly in the children’s list. My Fairy Library is a development from the acclaimed My Miniature Library, enabling children to create magical miniature books that they can place in a beautiful fairy setting. Jason Ford’s Monster Book of Zombies, Spooks and Ghouls is an activity book that should unleash children’s creativity in the same way as his bestselling The Super Book for Superheroes; and Mike Barfield’s Ultimate Excuse Generator provides children with, literally, millions of hilarious reasons for not doing their homework or tidying their room, a follow on from the popular Ultimate Insult Generator. Our gift list is as inventive as ever. We are launching our first full board game, Going, Going, Gone: An Art Auction Game in which the players have to compete to create the most valuable collection of recently discovered masterpieces by the great artists. Dream Decoder, wonderfully illustrated by Harriet Lee-Merrion, is the perfect gift for those who want to uncover the secrets of their unconscious; Art Out of the Box provides exciting challenges to aspiring young artists. Musical Experiments for after Dinner provides highly original ways of making an evening go with a swing. But perhaps as beautiful as any is The World of Shakespeare, a wonderful jigsaw puzzle with specially commissioned art work by Adam Simpson, in which Elizabethan London is recreated and populated with scenes and characters from Shakespeare’s plays. I hope you enjoy selling these books and games as much as we did creating them.

Cool, talented, and transgressive, Jean-Michel Basquiat’s life is just as fascinating as the work he produced. Delve into 1980s New York as this vivid graphic novel takes you on Basquiat’s journey from street-art legend SAMO to international art-scene darling, up until his sudden death. Told through cinematic scenes, this is Basquiat as seen through the eyes of those who knew him, including his father, Suzanne Mallouk, Larry Gagosian, and, most importantly, the man himself. An Intimate Portrait
Art and Photography in the Age of the Female Gaze
Jean-François Jaussaud
Charlotte Jansen
●● A unique collection of over 150 photographs of Bourgeois and her New York home and studio, taken by by Jean-Francois Jaussaud
●● How 40 women artists are redefining the ways we look at women while deconstructing, remixing and re-evaluating the gaze
●● Jaussaud’s images offer a rare glimpse into the private world of one of the greatest artists of the 20 th century
●● Provides a way of navigating our image-saturated world and understanding the dominant ways in which women are portrayed
●● With extracts from Bourgeois’ diary and her personal notes, as well as short texts from Jaussaud, Marie-Laure Bernadac, and Xavier Girard
●● An up-to-date debate on the future of female representation, now in paperback
Jean-François Jaussaud met Louise Bourgeois for the first time in 1994, at her studio in Brooklyn. But it was not before she had interrogated him about every aspect of his life that he earned her trust. A first photo session was set up in spring 1995, under one condition: she would destroy the photographs if she didn’t like them... Jaussaud agreed to it and passed the test. He was then given carte blanche to photograph her studio and her house in Chelsea, and he kept coming back for another 11 years. Jaussaud’s photographs of Louise Bourgeois in her house and studio are a moving testimony showing how completely implicated in her work she was, to the point that her private life and her work were inextricably interwoven. AUTHOR
Jean-Francois Jaussaud is a French photographer, art director, and producer.
A new generation of women is taking the art world – both online and offline – by storm. ●● Provides a much-needed inspirational focus for all women currently studying or practising design Women designers have made an immense contribution to our shared material culture and built environment. However, while several pioneers have achieved global recognition - Ray Eames, Florence Knoll Bassett and Charlotte Perriand to name a few - there are others not so well known but equally influential to the history of design. This book introduces the principle players in the areas of fashion, textiles, graphic and product design, and architecture from the last 100 years, and uncovers a history with women firmly at the centre. Featuring profiles on more than 100 women designers, each accompanied by an informative and authoritative text, and illustrated by iconic works, this book is an inspirational focus for all design students and practitioners. Prototyping and Modelmaking for Product Design
Light for Visual Artists Second Edition Understanding and Using Light in Art & Design
Second Edition
Richard Yot
Bjarki Hallgrimsson
●● Invaluable introduction to the way light is used to create effects in a wide range of media
●● New edition of a key title for product design students
●● Includes mini-tutorials, some revised for this new edition, to help illustrate the main teaching points
●● New case studies representing technological developments such as prototyping user experience, and interactive electronic products
●● Packed with diagrams and illustrations as well as computer game and film stills
●● Expanded section on digital modelmaking tools, including 3D printing, and laser cutting
This introduction to light for students and visual artists explores the way light can be used to create realistic and fantastical effects in a wide range of media. Divided into three parts, the clearly written text explains: the fundamental properties of natural and artificial light; how to create realistic images by observing people and the environment; the creative use of light in composition and design. Updated with revised photos and artwork, as well as 15 practical exercises and new online video material, this second edition is an indispensable resource for animators, digital illustrators, painters, photographers, and artists working in any medium.
Building prototypes and models is an essential component of any design activity. Prototyping and Modelmaking for Product Design illustrates how prototypes are used to help designers understand problems better, explore more imaginative solutions, investigate human interaction more fully and test functionality so as to de-risk the design process. Following an introduction on the purpose of prototyping, specific materials, tools and techniques are examined in detail, with step-by-step tutorials and industry examples of real and successful products illustrating how prototypes are used to help solve design problems.
