THE 10 PRINCIPLES
Focusing on Dieter Rams’ 10 Principles of Design and using them as guidance in my design process.
PROBLEM
how can we prevent the user from storing the vacuum inside a closet? how might a vacuum assimilate into the household environment? how might a vacuum create a positive and happy emotional response from the user?
good design... is innovative makes a product useful is aesthetic makes a product understandable is unobtrusive is honest is long-lasting is thourough down to the last detail is environmentally friendly is as little design as possible

LOW VERSITILITY
MARKET RESEARCH
high-performance hand vacuums tend to be designed to a functionalist aesthetic. the vacuums with sculptural aesthetics appealing more towards an elegant form are typically very low functionality products. there is opportnuity to create a functional, yet aesthetically pleasing vacuum for the high-performance market. 5

LOW MOBILITY
USER
individuals who use their products as an extension of their self expression. their style on exhibit. for the workplace, the studio, the home.

DETAIL REFINEMENT
while building a final mockup, it became apparent that putting the clamping springs mechanism in the body cylindar would restrict the opening width of the clamp. solution: I moved the clamping spring into the handle. now the system works on the tension of the spring, instead of compression.

PURPOSE
the cyclone vacuum is designed give the user control over the convenience and versitility of where it is stored. the aesthetically clean look encourages the user to integrate the vacuum in the open household, and create a positive emotional connection with the product that serves a function of cleaning.

PROBLEM
I tested out grating positions for both stand-up and hand-held cheese graters, the two most popular models.
optimum diameter for cylinder grip
conflicts in design were found when using alternate grips, and when grating into a bowl or on an irregular surface.

chef rozzi’s italian canteen manhattan, new york city restaurant uses an industrial cheese grater to produce large quantities of grated cheese however, there are frequent small jobs around the kitchen that require manual graters raphael finds that his palm and fingers ache after frequent use of their kitchen’s manual cheese grater.

LARGE DIAMETER HANDLE increases surface area the hand grips on, and disperses pressure from any concentrated area of the palm.
GRIP SLOT allows for a more firm grasp while grating.
RUBBER END GRIP adds traction to whatever surface you’re grating on. contoured shape to accomodate for different angles, or grating into a bowl.

BABY CARRIER + BACKPACK / PURSE
PROBLEM
parents carry both a baby carrier, and a backpack, diaper bag, or purse at the same time. the combination of different product systems becomes a hassle to manage

Paul Renner (1878 – 1956) was drawn to activities in which he could put his aesthetic skills to a utilitarian purpose. He is most notably recognized for designing the typeface Furura, an efficient and forward sans serif derived from simple geometric forms. He was a prominent member of theGerman Work Federation. In a conflicting view from the Nazis, he believed the Work Federation should act as a positive cultural force, separated from affiliation with political parties, and focus on honest fand quality work. Even before 1932, Renner made his opposition to the Nazis very clear. He published anti-Nazi views in his manuscript Kulturbolschewismus? (Cultural Bolshevism). It was eventually used as evidence in his arrest and dismissal from his post in 1933.

Rebranding ZORKI Creating a wordmark and extracted text logo and placing it in the context of a physical product and store
ZORKI is a Russian film camera company that produced cameras from 1946--1978. ZORKI is relaunching their brand this year, featuring a digital camera line that is reminiscent of the original analog cameras they produced a half a century prior.
