STUDIO PRACTICE Statement of Intent Name Lauren Dennis Blog Address http://l-‐dennis1316.blogspot.co.uk Date 18/01/16 Rationale I want to become more confident in my ability to create work, because ultimately it will mean that I am happier and my work stronger. This will make it easier to open a dialogue with people about my work and as a result, become more successful and improve my chances of being hired. I feel that this module will provide me with enough opportunities to make this viable. If I believe in my practice by the end of this year it will mean there is one less thing to worry about come graduation. This will also provide me with a full and diverse portfolio What do you want to do? -‐ Become more confident -‐ Make work for my portfolio -‐ Be more disciplined with my development process -‐ MAKE MORE! -‐ Find out what else I want to do -‐ Develop my tattoo aesthetic Themes / Subjects At this point in time i’m unsure, I work a lot with motifs in my work, these generally fall under: -‐ Nature -‐ animals, insects, plants, mushrooms -‐ Self Reflection -‐ authorial, biographical -‐ Emotions -‐ Motif -‐ Things that mean other things, representational Products / Methods of Distribution Throughout this module I would like to create band merchandise, a possible publication or illustrations for such, a product of some sort (something physical) and produce posters for things to become more proficient in type and layout. I will distribute these mostly online, but also at art fairs and shows. There is also a possibility within this module for an exhibition, which will include multiple people’s work but be curated and organised by myself. Practical Skills / Media / Formats

-‐ Hand drawn type -‐ InDesign + other software -‐ Use of scamps/thumbs more to get the best ideas -‐ Traditional printing methods -‐ Improve detail with wet media Brief 1: Secret 7” Deadline 2/03/2016 Rationale: I want to redesign and create album covers and posters because it will drive my practice and exploration into music based illustration. Secret 7” provides set tracks to work from, which provides more purpose than choosing any. This will improve my skills in type and layout as well as build my portfolio in an area I’m very interested in. As a result it will be more suited to my aspirations after my degree as well as keep me sane whilst working on bigger briefs. BRIEF ABANDONED AND EXPLAINED ON THE BLOG Brief 2: Val Cale EP among other things Deadline January 2016 Rationale: I want to rebrand the band Val Cale, which will involve an EP cover, Logo redesign, Merch and posters as well as social media redesign and possibly a mock up for a website, because this is something that drives my practice and interests me. I think this will provide me with a big variety of things as well as the challenge of working with other creative people to come to decisions together. This will mean I am getting experience of working to what a client wants as well as producing a wide variety of work. As a result I will gain a lot of experience from this and be able to further understand music industry specifications for artwork. Brief 3: High & Lonesome Festival Deadline 31st October Rationale: I have been asked to design a poster for the upcoming High and Lonesome Festival. A limited run of these will be screenprinted and sold at the venues. This is good for my practice because it’s a short deadline, as well as creating exposure for myself around Leeds, another benefit of this is that it will be screenprinted, meaning I will work with a limited colour pallette. Benefits to my practice will be: colour seperation, large scale work, working to a tight client deadline. ALSO IN THIS BRIEF: -‐ Etsy products -‐ Stalls and Markets

Brief 4: The Midnight Club Deadline 10/12/15 Rationale: I have been asked to create 3 large scale pieces with the theme of sixties Paris, for The Midnight Club at Studio 24, the theme is Au La Discotheque and my work will be projected. I want to do this brief as it’s something I have never done before, my work has never been projected and it will be interesting to try scale my work larger. It also is specified that it is monotone to ensure the light shows and projections will work over the top. ALSO IN THIS BRIEF: -‐ Permahigh Halloween Live Painting -‐ Fred Aldous Live Painting Brief 5: Tattoo Flash Deadline 1 every 2 weeks Ongoing Rationale: A3 composition every two weeks – This will run concurrently with my big project for this module, as a quick turnaround, which will reflect my research and ensure I am making more complete work. BRIEF ABANDONED AND EXPLAINED ON BLOG Additional Project Proposals Brief 6: Nature Prints Brief 7: Semester 2 main project (Tattoo Portfolio) See Project Proposal for more information.
