our response to brief create a gallery space in the basement: to comply with the disability and discrimination act of 1995. the ability to transform changing spaces for the gallery. create access to the basement when the house is unoccupied: ambulant disabled stairs leading from the front of the building. create a self contained studio/workspace for an individual: allow the possibility of residence in the studio space.

Garden area left as it for use

Stairs left as is for access from the house. Locks added for privacy of residents

Bathroom area under stairs

Panels added to existing walls in order to divide spaces and fold down furniture

Storage space included for artwork or chairs etc

Polished in-situ concrete flooring added for a more even surface

Double door added for ease of access to the basement

Balistrade added for stairs on entrance

Ambulant disabled stairs allow access for majority of people

Panels in the artist residence area fold down to create a bed for sleeping and a workbench for the studio.

Plan of the basement currently

Examples of the types of panels that we could use, however ours would not be on runners so that they can move on a pivot as well as open and close.

Our scheme and proposal plan Panels fold up and are on pivots so that they can divide space as required to serve different functions.

response to brief create an alternative arts space: reflection of basement arts. outdoor arts space with interchangable spaces. footprint 40m2: completely open space, built footprint minimal. storage space and access WC: diabled access.

the exterior wall from the basement that we will erect in outdoor arts space can be used to display work as well as act as the canvas for new work.

Here & Now at 1840 14th Street, NW. Alternative art space. Precident for our outdoor exhibition space.

we aim to create a community project for everyone in Beeston to be involved in. the project will be about the art that the community feels represents the area. this project also aims to bring art into this area of Beeston in relation to the basement arts project located adjacent, as the alternative arts space is a reflection of the basement. reflection of ambulant staircase as the entrance to the basement, as well as the entrance to the alternative artspace opposite. the hope is that the two will work together and attract publicity to the basement arts as well. The walls from the basement which we will knowck down and reuse in our alternative arts space, rebuilt to as close as possible to it’s original design and measurements, but then the wall will be extended to allow for head room regulations.

as well as creating the reflection of the ambulant stairs and the wall from the basement, we also want to reflect the panel architecture that we have included into the basement.

Plan to show how the panels can be changed into different spaces.

panels will be attatched to the rear of the wall and can be moved and manipulated in order to change spaces around the grass area. at night the panels close together to close the spaces. as this space is a public gallery we have also included two public diabled toilets.

Plan to show how the panels can be changed into different spaces.

Existing Wall

Waterproof Fill Layer Resin Injection Packers

Pump curtain injection resin is internally injected through the terraced walls to externally waterproof the basement - it reacts with water and binds it resulting in a waterproof, elastic solid. dry Lining the cavity drainage system of basement waterproofing uses a high density studded plastic membrane acting as a dry lining with an air gap behind. external tanking & insulation allows internal wall to maintain its current form whilst protecting from rising damp, water leakage & heat loss.

Stones flags to be removed and sold to generate some funding. The money from the reclaimed stone can be put towards incorporating a new underfloor heating system and new flooring of poured concrete, which will then be polished.

underfloor heating increased comfort levels - more even distribution of heat. individual room temperature control as standard. lower running costs - increased efficiencies and utilisation of energy. free wall spaces - unobtrusive, no visible pipework. allows panels to be positioned without worrying about radiators. lower maintenance. underfloor pipework is plastic and does not corrode like radiators may. vandal resistant - no radiators to be stolen off site.

The basement slab must be waterproofed to avoid moisture rising from the ground.

rainwater harvesting low flush dual mains/rainwater toilet: flushing the toilet with mains water roughy costs £1.50 for1000 litres of water. 10 flushes a day costs 15p. mains water consumption contributes to environmental damage, primarily through the considerable amounts of energy required to pump it. a rainwater flushing toilet system isn’t particularly cheap to fit (budget around £300) but does save roughly £60 a year. less fossil fuels burnt pumping the water and sewage. less land lost to water collection and sewage works. less disruption to local communities caused by sewage works a reduction in toxic chemicals used throughout the treatment process.

trickle vents located on both ends of the basement will allow a constant flow of fresh air to circulate no matter how the panels divided the room - both sides have access to a window. trickle vents - small openings in a window o building envelope to allow small amounts of ventilation in spaces intended to be naturally ventilated when major elements of the design - windows, doors, etc, are otherwise closed. they will help reduce condensation in rooms that are poorly ventilated, as well as an excellent way of maximising airflow in a small space.

initial ideas

We began by looking at fitting a lift into the premises to make it DDA compliant. However, due to the limitations of space this could not be done internally, so we looked into the idea of including an external lift.

Example of a folding shelf within a panel

Platform lift plan with dimensions

Platform lift section with dimensions

Example of the platform stair lift that can make the basement DDA comliant.

Including a platform lift as DDA complaint access to the basement would work in the space required, however this was too costly, so instead we have found an alternative comprimise to include ambulant disabled stair access to the basement.

Shelves within panels and gaps in the panels to diplay artwork

Panels could be on hinges to fold down from the ceiling

We also looking into the idea of using panels in our design in order to make the space interchangeable dependent on the requirements of what the space will be used for, eg lectures, gigs, art exhibitions and many more.
