Ship-cycling Fall 2019

Alang, India is home of the world’s largest shipyard. Pollutants from the last 20+ years of shipbreaking have not only killed off the wildlife in the ocean, but have also created a toxic environment for the people living in Alang. If the toxins from the environment don’t kill the people working on these shipyards, the dangerous work of shipbreaking will. How can this polluted industry turn itself around and solve these unsafe problems? This design will process a ship from start to finish and help the disorganization. This design determines where all these materials go and how Alang can take materials from the ships and make these once unusable materials, reusable. In present-day Alang, the whole shipbreaking process is executed on the polluted beaches around tons of unused scrap metal, furniture, and other components from these ships. This recycling and distribution center design, otherwise called “ship-cycling,” will clean up these polluted beaches and recycle the scrap metal in a metal foundry which recycles the scrap metal into new rerolled construction metal.

Step 1: Furniture is taken off these ships and put in the warehouse, where it is taken off the property to its final selling location. Step 2: Toxic materials from ships* go directly to the toxic material storage, where it is removed from the location and disposed of properly. Step 3: Large parts of ships are crained onto the cutting yards and workers break them down. Step 4: Broken down metal is carted into the metal sorting area and sorted into three groups: ferrous metal, non ferrous metal, and metal that is mixed with plastic, like wiring.

Step 5: Non ferrous metal scrap goes into toxic material storage and is taken off the property and disposed of properly. Step 6: Metal that is mixed with plastic goes to the metal shredding area and is shredded down until the metal is sorted with a magnet. Step 7: Metal pulled with the magnet from the shredding is carted to the melt shop and melted down with other ferrous metal. Step 8: Ferrous metal goes into the melt shop, where it is melted down and put through the melting process and is casted into billets Step 9: Billets are moved into the rerolling mill and put though a furnace and rolled into sellable material. Step 10: After this process is done, the metal is bundled and transferred to the metal reselling area where it is eventually sold and transported to its final desination to be used.

Fossil park Summer 2018

Trammel Fossil Park, located in Sharonville, Ohio, allows the public to search the park and take home fossils some as old as 450 million years old. This rocky, mountainous site is an essential resource for learning about the historic time of Cincinnati’s past. This location serves as a perfect opportunity for a learning facility to teach about the preserved remains of Cincinnati. This learning facility design has a very small footprint in order to allow for the discovery of as many fossils as possible. The programming allows for outdoor and indoor observation decks of the land and gives opportunities for closed and open exhibition spaces, which educated visitors about fossils and their time period. The rugged terrain makes for a difficult expedition up to the hiking trails, especially for kids. Therefore, this facility also allows for easier access to these pathways by an elevator or stairs which then lead to an exit at the top of the building, directly onto these hiking trails.

Greenhills, oh

Spring 2019

Greenhills, Ohio is one of the nation’s three “greenbelt communities� from the 1930s. These greenbelt communities had restrictive rules to prevent minorities from living there. Because the diversity was almost non-existent, the concept was to add artist community housing within Greenhills. Since Greenhills is lacking creativity, the hope is that attracting these creative minds may bring some personality to this area. To give the sense of community to these artists living among each other, this artist housing is purposefully interior facing.

Spring 2018

My first internship opportunity was in Baltimore with Marks Thomas Architects. Marks Thomas, now known as Moseley Architects, specializes in Senior Living and Affordable Housing. For the four months I was there, I worked on 410 Lofts, a proposal for affordable artists’ housing in one of Baltimore’s art districts. On a team of two, we looked at historic sanborne maps, created different massing studies, and held a focus group for artists in the area to talk about amenities they thought should be included in the designt.

vineyard house Fall 2018 & Summer 2019

In the Summer of 2019, I worked on a team that designed a waterfront house and guest house on Martha’s Vineyard. I assisted with 3D modeling of the homes in SketchUp and updated the model as changes were made. I used Enscape to produce these renderings. I also updated the floor plans and elevations as they were modified. I drew all of the interior elevations and updated them as the interior designer made decisions.

the tiniest cottage Summer 2019

In collaboration with Beijing Jiaotong University, four other undergrad architecture students from the University of Cincinnati and I designed a structure to compete in the 2019 UIA-CBC International Colleges and Universities Competitive Construction Workshop. Based on our design, we were one of the fifteen winning teams selected to spend three weeks in Auyian Town, China, where we constructed our designs and turned them into reality. Our full-scale structures competed against the other fourteen international teams, and we were awarded third place. The final structures include an observation tower, three living rooms, a tearoom, and a bathroom with full plumbing.
