AIKEN glad you’re here

www.VisitAikenSC.com In 1833, the first passenger train in the country journeyed full steam ahead from the port city of Charleston through the cotton fields of the rural south and arrived in Aiken. The railroad depot became the center of bustling activity and it holds that same spirit for visitors today. The City of Aiken Visitors Center and Train Museum is a must-see upon your arrival in this historic city. Here you can gather insight on the adventures that await you, from the rambling gardens to upcoming events and where to find the best sandwich this side of the Savannah River. The museum on-site boasts meticulously accurate dioramas that guide you down the tracks of the SC Canal and Railroad Company, stopping at the various depots in the state as they appeared in 1916. Along with interactive displays, the museum gives you a first glimpse of how Aiken and the surrounding communities were built through the steam of the railroad. Downstairs at the Museum you will find volunteers and staff eager to assist you with planning your Aiken adventure! Brochures are available for pick up as well. The hours of operation at the Visitors Center are normally Tuesday – Friday from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. However, during Tournament Week the hours are extended to Monday-Saturday 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.

The 4th Annual Horses and Courses Event, sponsored by the City of Aiken Arts Commission, City of Aiken Parks, Recreation & Tourism Department, the Aiken Artist’s Guild and the Aiken Downtown Development Association, will begin at 5:00 p.m and last until 8:00 p.m. This year’s event will focus on Aiken’s numerous talented artists including an art walk along the sidewalks and Alley in Aiken’s vibrant downtown. There will be visual artists displaying paintings, sculptures and jewelry as well as numerous performing artists. Betsy’s on the Corner

The link between Southern hospitality and food is undeniable

Tradition requires local cooks to provide casseroles, fried chicken and macaroni and cheese at any celebration or family gathering. Homebaked bread, warm chocolate chip cookies and gooey fudge brownies often find themselves pressed into the willing hands of neighbors and friends. Fresh-picked veggies and locally made jams and jellies are passed around, and secret recipes are shared all over the county. That welcoming and gracious spirit extends to our local eateries, as many natives and transplants use their culinary talents to provide the populace with a wide variety of cuisines to tempt the palate. Aiken County is home to a wonderful selection of locally owned delis, cafes and diners. Downtown Aiken is a veritable smorgasbord of local dining options. The first stop on your dining destination hunt in Aiken might be right around the corner, at Betsy’s on the Corner. Betsy’s is renowned for a variety of tasty vittles from homemade chicken and dumplins’ to hand scooped banana splits. In addition, downtown of-

fers everything from awesome burgers and the legendary hot dogs at City Billiards, which now is offering wonderful specials on seafood as well. Casa Bella Italian is located in one of Aiken’s refurbished homes and offers ambience for a night out on the town. New to downtown is the Speakeasy Eats, where you need a password to enter. The password is easy to locate when you arrive to enjoy great food and music. Linda’s Bistro is another highly recommended downtown stop on York Street between Park and Richland. Linda’s menu offers a wide variety from pastas to steaks. Owner Linda Rooney takes special care of each guest. If you want history and an amazing meal downtown, then The Restaurant at the Willcox would be an ideal choice. The restaurant specializes in ambience and artfully prepared cuisine that includes line-caught fish, organic poultry, naturally farmed pork and Certified Angus Beef brought to you by generations of family farmers and See Food, page 32

An Aiken original is The Variety, on York Street and they are known for filling your plate with goodness from salads, steaks, seafood, gargantuan baked potatoes and house cut French fries. Hence the name, The Variety is known for its variety. If all-natural health fare is more your style, Noble Breads stone mills their own grain, offers locally farmed eggs, raw milk and grass-fed South Carolina beef. Aiken is richly blessed with many authentic Italian restaurants that each offer their own special taste of Italy. For over 31 years, Acropolis Pizza has been feeding generations of Aiken County residents the finest in Greek and Italian food. Whether it is for lunch or dinner you won’t forget dining with George and Maria. From the classics to George’s Lemon Chicken Soup, you will feel the love that goes into this local gem. Brand new to Aiken, but well known by the residents of Wagener is The Little Bake Shoppe. From breakfast pastries to homemade sandwiches and breads, you will leave feeling that you have been transported to the Pennsylvania Dutch country. The wonderful eateries of Aiken County are not limited to Aiken. Graniteville is known for the down-home flavors of the Red Shed Diner. ‘Get fed at the shed’ is their mantra and you will love the farm to table mission of this yummy must stop in Graniteville. Juniper Restaurant, nestled in the tiny town of Ridge Spring just across the county line, features exquisite fare from the kitchen of Chef Brandon Velie, who uses much locally grown produce for his menus. Your stomach will be delighted that you took the short drive. Our local menus are as rich and diverse as the people who created them. Take some time to explore a local sandwich shop or cafe. Spend an evening lingering over a four-course meal. Stop in and pick up a freshly baked croissant or bagel. Grab a burger and fries and dive in to a sinfully delicious banana split.
