On behalf of the Aiken High School FFA and the South Carolina High School Rodeo Association, we would like to welcome you to the first Aiken High School FFA Spring Rodeo. The AHS FFA has worked hard for the last 6 months planning this event , obtaining sponsorships, and coordinating all the pieces and parts it takes for a successful rodeo. All of our students and parents have chipped in with a lot of hard work and hours of volunteer time to make this event a success. The proceeds from this event will go towards furthering the on-going programs we have in place with our FFA. The South Carolina High School Rodeo Association is currently in its 40th year of promoting scholarship and sportsmanship through the sport of rodeo for kids from first grade through high school. Chartered as a state affiliate of the National High School Rodeo Association, the SCHSRA was originally started for high school aged students, but in recent years has expanded to include a Junior High division and a Youth Division. Members of the Association come from all corners of South Carolina to compete weekly in traditional rodeo events like saddle bronc riding, calf tie-down roping, calf breakaway roping, barrel racing and bull riding to name a few events. Local community groups, like the Aiken High School FFA host a rodeo as a fund raiser and the SCHSRA conducts the rodeo for our member-contestants. Association members are required to maintain at least a “C average in school as well as having a record of good behavior. Members of the SCHSRA earn scholarship money for college throughout their years in the Association and many of our past members have gone on to compete in rodeo in college. Members are also competing throughout the year to earn a spot on our National Team that will travel to Rock Springs, Wyoming this summer for the National High School Rodeo Finals. Our State Finals will be held at the Garrison Indoor Arena at Clemson University on May 21st through 23rd and you are invited to attend as we celebrate 40 years of High School rodeo in South Carolina. You are in for a great night of rodeo action and top notch competition from these cowgirls and cowboys. So sit back and enjoy yourself as we bring RODEO to Aiken ! The event is judged according to the performances of both the rider and the bucking horse. It is a single-handhold, eight-second ride which starts with the cowboy’s feet held in a position over the break of the horse’s shoulders until the horse’s front feet touch the ground first jump out of the chute. The rider earns points maintaining upper body control while moving his feet in a toes-turned-out rhythmic motion in time with the horse’s bucking action.

Known as rodeo’s classic event, saddle bronc riding is judged similarly to bareback bronc riding but there are additional possibilities to being disqualified; that is, losing a stirrup or dropping the thickly braided rein that is attached to the horse’s halter. The cowboy sits on the horse differently due to the saddle and rein, and the spurring motion covers a different area of the horse. Saddle broncs are usually several hundred pounds heavier than bareback horses and generally buck in a slower manner.

Team roping is the only rodeo event that features two contestants. The team is made up of a header and a heeler. The header ropes the horns, then dallies or wraps his rope around his saddle horn and turns the steer to the left for the other cowboy who ropes the heels. The heeler must throw a loop with precision timing to catch both of the steer’s hind legs. The time clock stops once both ropers have made a catch and brought the animals to a stop, facing each other.

Bull riders, who might not weigh more than 150 pounds, place a flat braided rope around a bull that weighs almost 2000 pounds. The bull rope is placed around the animal, just behind its shoulders. It is then looped and threaded through itself and the cowboy wraps it around his riding hand with only his grip holding him in place. The rider relies on balance and leg strength to make the eight-second buzzer. Look for bull riders to sit up close to their bull ropes and to turn their toes out because rides are judged on the riding style of the competitor and the bucking ability of the bull.

As in team roping, the calf gets a running start, with the cowboy throwing his rope around the calf ’s head. His horse then stops and the cowboy jumps off, runs to the calf, picks it up and drops it to its side in a move called “flanking.” He must tie any three legs together with a short rope, and the horse pulls back to eliminate slack in the rope. This is also a timed event.

Racing down an entry ramp, the cowgirl and her horse burst into the arena and follow a set path around three large barrels arranged in a triangular pattern. The cowgirl receives a penalty if she or the horse touches a barrel. After turning around the last barrel in the back of the arena, the horse sprints back to the entrance to record the fastest time possible.

Breakaway roping is a variation of calf roping where a calf is roped, but not thrown and tied. It is a rodeo event that features a calf and one mounted rider. The calves are moved one at a time through narrow runs leading to a chute with spring-loaded doors. The horse and rider wait in a box next to the chute that has a spring-loaded rope, known as the barrier, stretched in front. A light rope is fastened from the chute to the calf ’s neck, releasing once the calf is well away from the chute and releasing the barrier, which is used to ensure that the calf gets a head start. Once the barrier has released, the horse runs out of the box while the roper attempts to throw a lasso around the neck of the calf.

Ever try wrestling a steer or jumping from a running horse? Cowboys must do both in steer wrestling. The cowboy slides off his galloping horse, hooks his right arm around the steer’s right horn, grasps the left horn with his left hand, and tries to muscle the animal to the dirt. The fastest time wins.

The object is to race to the end of the rodeo arena to where a goat is staked out on a 10 feet (3.0 m) rope, catch the goat, throw it to the ground and tie three of its feet together. The distance from the starting line to the stake varies, but is usually 100 feet or so. Contestants dismount their horse while it is sliding to a stop, though usually while still in motion, run to the staked-out goat, which must be taken to the ground and laid on its side in order to tie three of its legs together. The rope used is a nylon or cotton rope with an approximate length of four feet, called a “string.

For over 39 years, the South Carolina Rodeo Association has been an organization for students all over South Carolina who want to participate in the sport of rodeo. They are supervised by a concerned group of adults that are interested in providing an opportunity for students to participate in a non-traditional sport. The top four contestants in each event each year are eligible to represent our state at the National Finals Rodeo (HS and JR contestants only). This past year the HS National Finals Rodeo was held in Wyoming and the Junior High Division was in Iowa.

• The National FFA Organization began in 1928 and was organized in Kansas City. The original name was Future Farmers of America. The name was changed to National FFA Organization in 1988 to reflect its evolution in other diverse argricultural fields, including marketing, processing, communications, education, horticulture, production, natural resources, foresty, agribusiness and more. • In 1950, Congress granted FFA a federal charter, making it an integral, intracurricular part of public agricultural instruction under the National Vocation Education Acts. • FFA receives no federal funding. • About 70 percent of FFA members live in rural/farm areas. About 10 percent live in urban and suburban areas, and 19 percent live in small towns.
