Preventive Care
Men & Women Preventive Care
Preventive care is a major buzzword in the health care world these days, as more and more research is finding that most chronic diseases are highly preventable. Men and women alike share personal responsibilities when it comes to staying on top of their health. That means scheduling regular checkups with your physician to check for conditions such as high blood pressure, obesity, diabetes, vision issues and various types of cancer. Unless otherwise noted, John Hopkins Medicine recommends discussing the following conditions with your doctor for clarification and accuracy purposes, as everyone’s health care situation may vary.
Men
Diabetes: At least every three years for adults who have had no symptoms and have sustained high blood pressure greater than 135/80. Lipid disorders: All men ages 35 and older, as well as younger men with a higher risk for coronary artery disease, should be checked every five years. Blood pressure: Screenings every two years if blood pressure reading is higher than 120/80, according to the Joint National Committee on Prevention, Detection, Evaluation and Treatment of High Blood Pressure. Colorectal cancer: Discuss this with your health care provider to make an informed decision based on your family history and current medical condition.
Women
Cervical cancer: Women between the ages of 30 and 65 should have a Pap test and HPV test every five years. Depression: Feelings of depression should be addressed at all routine exams, as long as the clinical practice has staff and systems in place to ensure accurate, effective diagnosis and treatment. Vision: Women (and men) should have a baseline comprehensive exam at age 40; if you have a chronic disease, you should check with your health care provider for exam frequency. Breast cancer: Women should have yearly mammograms and clinical breast exams.

Sports Medicine: Not just for professional athletes Whether you’re a weekend warrior who enjoys an occasional tennis match with friends or a professional athlete who is regularly active on the field, the field of sports medicine offers patients individualized treatment plans when injury strikes, helping improve athletic performance and prevent future injuries.
The practice of sports medicine is the application of a physician’s knowledge and skills to anyone engaged in sports and exercise, no matter the person’s age or athletic skill level. Increased levels of activity among people of all ages mean that athletic and sports injuries are becoming more and more common. In a time when regular, everyday people are participating in marathons and other high-intensity activities, sports medicine offers an array of services to help guide patients through a healthy, active lifestyle. But, even those who practice the best preventative exercises and conditioning can experience injuries while playing professional ball, participating in a decathlon, or simply exercising at home.
6 | Medical Directory 2015
The field of sports medicine is ever-changing and developing because of new technologies and research. Sports medicine treats injuries relating to muscle, ligament, tendon and bone problems, but also may help treat chronic illnesses that can affect physical performance, such as asthma and diabetes. The goal of sports medicine is to decrease a patient’s pain, improve their body strength, and restore mobility, whether you’re an older athlete suffering from a recurring shoulder injury, or a high school football player recovering from another musculoskeletal ailment. Sports medicine teams may include a combination of certified athletic trainers, orthopedic surgeons, Board Certified primary care physicians, chiropractors, physical therapists, sport psychologists, nutritionists, massage therapists and orthotists. Ideally, the goal of sports medicine is to prevent injury before it occurs
through wellness education and promotion of an active and healthy lifestyle. When injury does present, doctors, therapists, surgeons, nurses and others specializing in sports medicine are there to help get all ages and levels of athletes back in the game. If you’re suffering from a sports or exercise-related injury or illness, Carolina Musculoskeletal Institute (CMI) is dedicated to providing the best comprehensive musculoskeletal care to patients. Through the efforts of highly trained physicians, nurses and staff, CMI offers full treatment services in orthopedic (bones & joints), sports medicine (athletes & athletic conditions), neurology (headaches, nerve issues, nerve disease), arthritis (painful joints), podiatry (diseases and surgery of feet), imaging (x-rays, CT scans), and pain management. Keep Your Bones Strong
When you think physical health, you may start with the skin, hair or teeth, because these are the parts of the body you can see. But sitting beneath the surface are the vital pieces making up the ultimate structure of your body — the bones. They play many crucial roles in the body, including protection of organs, anchoring of muscles and storage of calcium. Taking care of your bones is a practice that should start in childhood and continue throughout your life.
At least one in three women and one in five men over the age of 50 will suffer a fracture caused by weak bones.
The Numbers
Why is bone health so important? The Office of the Surgeon General reports an assortment of statistics that call for healthier, bone-focused diets to help the country’s population. How likely you are to develop osteoporosis — a condition that causes bones to become weak and brittle – depends on a variety of lifestyle, diet and exercise factors. According to the Surgeon General:
Physical Activity
• The risk of a fracture increases with age and is greatest in women. In fact, roughly four in 10 Caucasian women ages 50 or older in the United States will experience a hip, spine or wrist fracture sometime during the remainder of their lives. • Osteoporosis is the most common cause of fractures. Roughly 10 million individuals over age 50 in the United States have osteoporosis of the hip. • By 2020, one in two Americans over age 50 is expected to have or be at risk of developing osteoporosis of the hip.
Calcium & Vitamin D
Calcium is a mineral needed by the body for healthy bones. Since the body cannot produce calcium, it must be absorbed through food or vitamins. Good sources can include
8 | Medical Directory 2015
low-fat dairy products, dark green leafy vegetables and calcium-fortified products such as orange juice, cereal and bread. The daily recommended amount of calcium varies for individuals, so check with your physician to see how much you should be taking in.
Bones also can be strengthened through regular physical activity. Weight-bearing physical activities cause muscles and bones to work against gravity. This can be strenuous, so consult your physician before increasing the amount of weight-bearing exercises. These exercises can include simple walking, jogging or running. More vigorous activities can include field hockey, hiking and weightlifting.

Ingredients that help fight inflammation Those outside of the medical profession may consider inflammation a negative thing. However, inflammation is an attempt by the human body to heal itself. Inflammation that does not overstay its welcome can help protect the body from bacterial and viral infections. Inflammation can be poor for health when it is a constant occurrence. Autoimmune diseases often trigger inflammatory responses even when there is no threat of infection, and that can cause the immune system to damage its own tissues. The right diet can help reduce instances of inflammation, and the following are some ingredients to consider eating more of to fight symptoms of inflammation.
28 days, 30 patients were randomly assigned either two grams of ginger root supplements per day or a placebo. After 28 days, patients who had taken the ginger supplements had significant reductions in inflammation. That’s a considerable finding, as colon inflammation has been linked to a higher risk of colon cancer.
Turmeric
Used primarily for flavoring, turmeric is a spice closely related to ginger and contains polyphonic compounds known to help in the fight against inflammation. Turmeric can be added to stews and sauces, and some studies have indicated that it can alleviate the pain caused by osteoarthritis, a po-

tentially painful condition that occurs when the joints’ natural shock absorbers break down.
Extra-virgin olive oil Extra-virgin olive oil is a staple of the Mediterranean diet, an approach to eating that emphasizes fish, fruits, vegetables, beans and whole grains. The Mediterranean diet can reduce inflammation, and it also has been linked to a lower risk of heart attack and heart disease. It may even help prevent stroke and Alzheimer’s disease.
Vegetables
Men and women who eat lots of different vegetables may be less likely to develop inflammation. According to a study by the American Gut Project, people who eat more than 25 species of plants per week have a greater as-
sortment of bacteria in their stomachs than those who eat fewer than 10 per week. That’s because the greater variety of produce and legumes helps to increase the amount of healthy bacteria lining human stomachs, and that healthy bacteria helps to reduce instances of inflammation.
Omega-3 fatty acids
Omega-3 fatty acids, commonly found in certain types of fish, help suppress cytokines and other inflammatory chemicals. Salmon, herring, sardines and anchovies are loaded with omega-3 fatty acids, and eating fish twice a week can not only reduce inflammation but also decrease levels of LDL cholesterol, often referred to as “bad” cholesterol. A certain amount of inflammation is a good thing. But men and women who find themselves routinely battling inflammation may want to make certain dietary changes to counter their inflammation problems.

Medication Safety Tips • Make sure your doctor knows about all the medications you are taking, including non-prescription products, herbal remedies, dietary supplements, and vitamins. Some medications do not mix with seemingly innocent ingredients. Keep a running list of any medicines you take so you can easily and accurately share this information with your physician. • Question anything that you do not understand. Check the prescription for dosing information. For refills, make sure the refill information conforms to the original prescription strength. • Fill all prescriptions at the same pharmacy and develop a rapport with the pharmacist so that potential drug interactions will be flagged. Pharmacists are well versed in medications and may be able to inform you as to the safety or risk involved in taking an over-the-counter product at the same time that you are on a prescription. • Many pills look the same. If you are confused and taking multiple medications, keep medications in the original packaging and double-check the labels before taking any medications. • Use the right dosing tools. A spoon from the kitchen is not accurate for measuring out a teaspoon of medication.
medications locked away. • Routinely discard expired or unneeded medications. Medicine take-back programs for disposal are a good way to remove medicines from the home and reduce the chance that others may accidentally take the medicine. • Consult with a doctor before beginning or ending medication. Medicines play important roles in personal health. When used correctly, medications are assets, but caution should always be taken to ensure safe usage and storage of any medications.

Prescription and over-thecounter medications can save lives and help people of all ages manage certain conditions. When used correctly and under the guidance of a physician, medications are largely safe. It’s when medicines are used off-label, shared or taken in error that reactions and injury can occur. The American Academy of Pediatrics and their Healthy Children Organization warns that more than 7,000 children visit hospital emergency rooms every year for problems related to medication errors. Children are not the only ones in danger. Adults can make mistakes with their medications as well. For example, seniors who may be managing several different types of medications can inadvertently cause dangerous drug interactions by mixing the wrong pills. Pharmacists work diligently to help prevent medication errors. However, the general public can also do their part. The American Society of Health-System Pharmacists and the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy offer these medication safety tips. • When a new medication is prescribed, ask the doctor to explain more about it, including its intended purpose and any common side effects to be expected.
• If you take multiple medications, use a pillbox to keep pills organized. The box makes it easier to manage medications and serves as a reminder if you have or have not taken a medication on a given day. • Store medications as instructed on the label. The bathroom medicine cabinet may not be an ideal place to store medications, as bathrooms get damp, and that can compromise the integrity of the pills. Also, bathroom cabinets are readily accessible by all, including kids. It’s better to store drugs out of sight and reach of children. Keep dangerous

Sleep Yourself to Better Health
Are you bright-eyed and bushy-tailed today or beat down and just plain bushed? Being chronically tired to the point of exhaustion translates to decreased performance in nearly every physical and mental activity. If we do not recharge our brains and rest our muscles, our body is not given the chance to fully recover from various activities. Sleep plays a critical role in our health across immunity, metabolism, memory, learning and other vital functions.
Sleep & Learning
Researchers at the Division of Sleep Medicine at Harvard Medical School are conducting studies that suggest various sleep stages are involved in the consolidation of different types of memories and that being sleep deprived reduces one’s ability to learn. You’d probably guess that the better rested you are, the more likely you are to focus and learn new information. But what about after you learn? Slow-wave sleep, which is defined as deep, restorative sleep, plays a significant role in processing and consolidating newly acquired information, according to Harvard’s sleep researchers. REM sleep, on the other
hand, is necessary for our ability to consolidate the memory of how to perform repetitive tasks.
How to Get More Sleep
In today’s 24/7 world of information-sharing, socializing and working, sleep is getting harder to come by. The fact is, our bodies still require an ample amount of sleep to most effectively get through the day. How much sleep depends on your age. A study by the National Sleep Foundation found that sleep needs vary across populations. The National Sleep Foundation offers these tips for maximizing your mattress time: • Choose one consistent bedtime and maintain it, even on the weekends; • Avoid napping late in the afternoon if you want to catch your Zs at night; • Daily exercise is beneficial, as long as it doesn’t cut into your sleep time; • Design a sleep-friendly room with the noise and darkness levels best suited to your personal sleep preferences; and • Reach out to your physician if sleep deprivation is impacting your daily life.

Dealing with the blues logical Science. The report details the importance of creating and maintaining positive relationships in the workplace, family and other social circles. Without people to interact with and vent to, we can become even more inclusive and shut ourselves out to the external world. This behavior has been proven to be harmful to our confidence levels and
abilities to cope with negative situations.
The Science Behind Loneliness
Scientific research shows the positive impact that strong social lives can have on our overall health. One Colorado State University study found that the more positive social interactions people with depression

We’ve all had a bad day. It’s how we bounce back from negative experiences that helps us move forward and achieve our life goals. And the key to bouncing back is having a strong support group around us. People who are lonely have more physical and mental health problems than those who feel connected to others, according to a new report in Psycho-
had, the more improvement in the symptoms they experienced. Other research in the journal Health Psychology has shown that you’ll eat less healthful food if you frequently eat by yourself, and you are more likely to be physically inactive the lonelier you feel.

Wellness in the Workplace In an era of rapidly rising medical costs, more employers across the nation are taking an interest in the health of their employees. Some companies are spending up to 20 percent of their bottom lines on health care coverage for their workers. Increases in medical costs and new stipulations within the Affordable Care Act have left many employers looking for ways to cut down that percentage. But instead of simply telling employees they need to improve their well-being, companies are developing innovative ways to make healthy living a fun, collaborative experience.
You’re Being Watched
Biometric screenings examine a person’s blood pressure, cholesterol, body-mass index and other factors. These tests allow medical professionals to pinpoint and develop plans of action for potential health issues down the road. Companies can use this information to identify strategies for their health and wellness programs. Having such accurate baseline data for employees across the company helps decision-makers set new goals, track their employees and refine processes as they go.
You’re Being Rewarded
As companies get more serious about their health programming, they are implementing incentive-based policies that align their cost goals with the wellness of their workers. The healthier you are, the better rate you can get on your policy in many cases. That means avoiding non-healthy activities such as smoking, overeating and excessive alcohol use can help your wallet more than you may think. Making the right decisions can keep more money in your pocket as opposed to more money going to pay your health care costs.

Creative Programming
The goal of many wellness programs has evolved over the years from employee education to employee engagement. This means getting workers involved in activities such as charitable walks or competitive sporting events. Other ways of getting employees excited
about making healthier choices include the coordination of speakers or health professionals to make on-site presentations. Some companies also bring in nurses to deliver flu shots or advice on specific health risks. Consider these options if you are involved in your company’s health and wellness programming.
Family Workout Time
The workday is done and dinner is in the oven. Exercise may be the last thing on your mind at the moment, but experts say family workout time is crucial to forming togetherness and improving overall health, especially in young kids. According to the national fitness program Let’s Move, children should get a total of 60 minutes of physical activity each day, and adults need at least 30. And exercise has never been more important to protecting children from incurring preventable illnesses later in life. Childhood obesity rates have tripled since the 1980s, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. At this rate, one third of all children born in 2000 or later will suffer from diabetes at some point in their lives. Here are some ideas for finding time for a family

Are your children fans of video games or activities on the computer? Instead of pulling them away from their hobbies, join them. Surprise them with a new video game. Just be sure that the game is one requiring physical activity. There are many dance and sports games that call for players to act out specific moves, swings or throws. This will help you and your child enjoy a game together while also sneaking in some exercise.

research before purchasing a new device, some of which can cost hundreds of dollars.
FitBit, Misfit and Jawbone may sound like names for underground punk rock bands, but they are actually at the forefront of the heath revolution. These and many other athletic brands have carved out a niche in the fast-growing segment of wearable fitness-tracking devices becoming popular with people looking to gauge their exercise, eating and sleeping habits. Designed to be worn like watches or simply stowed away in your pocket, wearable devices are your new workout partner, helping you count calories, steps and other metrics throughout your day. Each brand has a different take on its approach to fitness tracking, so do a little
The Trend
Fitness trackers are the hottest wearable devices on the market, accounting for 72 percent of all digital fitness device sales, according to the Consumer Electronics Association. The numbers only look to increase as companies use consumer feedback to refine their products. The wearable technology in these devises is the catalyst behind the segment’s growth, as people can more accurately than ever record what is happening with their bodies. Motivation
Consumers are buying wearable devices for many reasons. One of the most prevalent is the motivation they can provide for more beneficial workouts, better eating and healthier sleep. With the versatility of the devices – some brands are even waterproof – you can track your workout
activities from running and tennis to basketball and swimming. There’s a wearable fitness product for almost every budget. While the top-tier products can range into the $200 to $300 range, many basic fitness trackers begin around $30. Personal style also is a driving factor behind the sales of fitness bands, as companies have worked to improve the aesthetics of their products with smaller sizes and more modern colors.
