Q&A MIGRAINE HEADACHES graine sufferers have auras. If you answer yes to 2 of the 3 following questions, speak with your healthcare provider about the possibility that you are having migraine headaches: (1) Has a headache limited your activities for a day or more in the last 3 months? (2) Are you nauseated or sick to your stomach when you have a headache? (3) Does light bother you when you have a headache?
Q: What could be causing my migraines?
•Over 30 million Americans between the ages of 12 and 80 have migraines. •Overall, 18% of women and 6% of men are affected. •An estimated one-third of migraine sufferers do not see a prescriber about their headaches, and among those who do, as many as half do not receive a correct diagnosis. Q: How do I know I am having a migraine? A:
Patients with migraine often have
intense pulsing or throbbing pain on one side
of the head. There are 2 different types of migraines: those with auras and those without.
Auras are typically visual disturbances in the
eye, such as seeing halos, that occur before the migraine pain. An aura can also be an odd
sense of smell, having difficulty speaking, or
having a “funny feeling.” Only 20-30% of mi-
when migraines are severe, occur more than 2
or 3 times a month, and interfere with normal activities. These medications need to be taken on a regular (usually daily) basis, even if you
are not having a migraine in order to get their full benefit. Ask your healthcare provider
which medications for rescue and prevention may be best for your migraines.
Q: What is a migraine diary? A:
A migraine diary is a record of your
A: The exact causes of migraines are not known; however, they might be caused by changes in the nerve cells and arteries in the brain. Migraines often run in families. People with migraines have a higher likelihood than others of being affected by certain migraine “triggers.” Triggers do not actually cause migraine headaches, but they can make you more vulnerable to attacks. Stress is considered the most common trigger for migraines. Weather changes, exposure to bright lights, skipping a meal or hunger, and lack of sleep are also common. Among women, menstruation (“periods”) is a common trigger.

Q: What is the difference between rescue and preventive medicine for migraines?
Q: Why go to USA Drug?
A:
Rescue medications relieve migraine symptoms including pain, nausea, and vomiting. They are best if taken as soon as the headache begins. If taken in time, rescue medications can shorten the length of the migraine and make it less painful. The sooner a rescue medicine is taken, the sooner a migraine will end. Examples of over-thecounter rescue medicines are ibuprofen and naproxen. Prescription examples include a class of medications called “triptans” such as sumatriptan. Preventive medicines are intended to decrease the number and severity of migraines. They are usually recommended

your health care provider develop a migraine
management plan that fits your needs. Items to include in a migraine diary: the number
of migraines that occur and the days of the month they occur, how long each migraine lasts and how severe it is, medications that
were used to treat the pain and how well they worked, and possible triggers. Daily, weekly,
or monthly diary forms are available from the American Headache Society at:

Clay Sipes
Sonny Williams’ Steakroom
78 . FEBRUARY 2012
Doug Knopp Chateau on the Lake Resort & Spa
As the Executive Chef of Sonny Williams’ Steakroom in Little Rock, Arkansas, Clay Sipes focuses on high-quality seafood, as much as he does beef. Although we are a high-end steak house, our seafood gets just as much praise. Clay’s culinary career started with a culinary degree from the American Culinary Federations, Arkansas Culinary School for Apprenticeship (ACA). While in school he apprenticed under two different chefs, one with a New Orleans background and the other in French cuisine. Since his tenure at Sonny’s he has won numerous awards: voted Best Steak by the Arkansas Times and also voted Best Steak House by the Arkansas Democrat Gazette. Chef Sipes has trained many young and upcoming Chefs in Little Rock and is known for his hiring of apprentices from the ACA. Overall, Executive Chef Clay Sipes exudes the talents of young chefs born and studied in the state of Arkansas.
Born and Raised in Vancouver, Canada, Chef Knopp’s style is said to be West Coast Contemporary. A huge proponent of the Slow Food Movement and Sustainable Agriculture, his menus are infused with a combination of sustainability and molecular gastronomy, combining the best of both worlds. “We need to understand the importance of knowing where our food comes from and how it is raised, and at the same time provide our guests a once-ina-lifetime dining experience. Throughout our menus you will see items represented with the snail; this is our commitment to promote local, seasonal, unprocessed and wholesome food from the farm to your plate,” Knopp said. Knopp, his wife Joan and their three greyhounds now reside on Table Rock Lake and plan to be here many years.
