Using the inspiration of a custom furniture piece to create a space that illustrates relationships of opposing phases. The three phases will be developed throughout the project. The first phase being immersion in which diagrams illustrates the roles each space plays and its functional requirements. The second phase is analysis of the hierarchy of structure, spaces and use in the building, as well as student roles and circulation paths. Lastly, a summary of establishing design parameters and driving characteristics.

DRIVERS - Studies and Concept Diagrams Public vs. Private
Perspective Study of Drivers
The relationship between public to private spaces in a larger sense creates a circulation in which the center of the building acts as the point of most activity while private spaces disperse farther out. Private areas give personal space for students & faculty spaces, allow individual heads down work, where as public areas allow for collaboration with peers.
Transparent vs. Opaque
Transparent to opaque materials relates back to the relationship of private vs public because transparent materials can take away a level of privacy while opaque materials create a sense of enclosure of privacy from another area. Certain spaces like offices, meeting rooms, and classrooms will vary in terms of opacity depending on the level of privacy needed.
Compression vs. Release
The transformation of going from a compressed area to an area that is more open can benefit ones personal feeling of relief. The balance between enclosed and open spaces offer a variety of experiences for the end users. Being in a compressed area that flows into a more open space where collaboration is taken place can allow one to feel engaged to partake with others in a larger environment and brings the focus back to the central area of activity, constantly inspiring users of the space.

Workplace - Next
02
The Next company is innovative company that constantly refers back to an idea of a think tank, a place where the creation of a idea, thought, inspiration and eventually a concrete design derives from. This space will reflect Next’s sensibilities and work system. The think tank will be in the core of the building with everything else around it and will also be seen from many different viewpoints to constantly refer employees back to the think tank for ideas and inspiration. The sense of the think tank being the heart of the company will strongly be suggested through color, circulation, materials and structure.

Concept Statement Using the circulatory system to organize and relate Next’s sensibilities and process of work throughout the space. In the circulatory system, the heart transports and transitions blood, oxygen, nutrients and more to one organ to another to keep us active and well. It is a system that relies on energy, collaboration and most importantly the heart to work. This same process can be related to the Next company.
The think tank serves as the heart of the company where employees come together to brainstorm ideas, inspire one another, think of ways of innovation, collaborate and therefore transport and transition these ideas back to other parts of the company that can help construct their ideas and bring them to life.
The concept of transferring and transition of blood to one organ to another will be seen through color transitioning from one space to another, allowing flow and a sense of progression in the space and of the Next company as a whole.

Hospitality and Workplace - Thesis
06
For my thesis, I chose to To design transient shared working and living spaces for modern day nomads, a community of professionals who frequently travel for business or personal ventures. This space will stimulate productivity, collaboration and connections that build stronger networks for success. When traveling, this space allows Nomads to rest and connect with others. Residents will fully immerse themselves in the process of innovation and spontaneity.
Reception
The NoMad Nomad will immerse today’s global and mobile professionals in an environment that celebrates and supports the culture of social organization, technology and innovation. Within its walls, the innate human instinct of sharing abounds through opportunities for connection, production, and cogitation. Nomad will embody a grid organization, inspired by the city grids of Richmond, Savannah, and New York, where parks act as a public gathering space and streets lead the way to private areas.
Richmond, VA
Savannah, GA
Easy access to the site is vital for nomads, who are constantly on the go. The site is located closet to major roads and highways, therefore making it very easy to visitors to find the building. Route 60, 360 and I95 connect to downtown Richmond where all the buzz is located and to other parts of Richmond like Carytown where restaurants, shops and local businesses are all located.

New York, NY
Each colored area indicates a park or communal space

Connection
in which nomads are able to connect with each other on a business and personal level.
Dynamic
the space will be dynamic in the sense of constant but fluid transition of spaces.
Adaptability
nomads have the ability to change, alter, adjust and reconstruct their space.
Evolve
nomads have the ability to evolve their brand and network while being exposed to other nomads.
Progression
nomads are able to progress their brand and business with other like-minded professionals.
Solids to Voids
solid vs. void determines what spaces are public and private and also help create the grid of the floor plan.
Liberation
being a nomad comes with a sense of liberation giving nomads a choice in where and how they work.
Private to Public
each floor ranges from public to private. The first floor is the most private and as one travels up to another floor more privacy is created.

Communal Lounge
In this space, nomads can work or relax, have quick meetings or work alone in wall niches.
Cafe
Near the entrance is a communal cafe where nomads can make lunch, relax and chat.
Each bed can be pulled down or stored back up into the wall to allow for adaptable living.
Guest Room
Each guest room has a movable wall that can separate sleeping space to living room space or create a more open living room.
Communal Area
In this space, nomads have the ability to work in private offices for heads down work, meet with coworkers in huddle rooms for brainstorming and lounge and chat in a communal lounge area that has adaptable and movable furniture systems.
Huddle Rooms
Huddle Rooms, which design is inspired by nomadic yurts, provide a semi-private environment to allow impromptu meetings and brainstorming.
