Education School of Media & Culture Using the inspiration of a custom furniture piece to create a space that illustrates relationships of opposing phases. The three phases will be developed throughout the project. The first phase being immersion in which diagrams illustrates the roles each space plays and its functional requirements. The second phase is analysis of the hierarchy of structure, spaces and use in the building, as well as student roles and circulation paths. Lastly, a summary of establishing design parameters and driving characteristics.

DRIVERS - Studies and Concept Diagrams Public vs. Private

Perspective Study of Drivers

The relationship between public to private spaces in a larger sense creates a circulation in which the center of the building acts as the point of most activity while private spaces disperse farther out. Private areas give personal space for students & faculty spaces, allow individual heads down work, where as public areas allow for collaboration with peers.

Transparent vs. Opaque

Transparent to opaque materials relates back to the relationship of private vs public because transparent materials can take away a level of privacy while opaque materials create a sense of enclosure of privacy from another area. Certain spaces like offices, meeting rooms, and classrooms will vary in terms of opacity depending on the level of privacy needed.

Compression vs. Release

The transformation of going from a compressed area to an area that is more open can benefit ones personal feeling of relief. The balance between enclosed and open spaces offer a variety of experiences for the end users. Being in a compressed area that flows into a more open space where collaboration is taken place can allow one to feel engaged to partake with others in a larger environment and brings the focus back to the central area of activity, constantly inspiring users of the space.

Workplace - Next

02

The Next company is innovative company that constantly refers back to an idea of a think tank, a place where the creation of a idea, thought, inspiration and eventually a concrete design derives from. This space will reflect Next’s sensibilities and work system. The think tank will be in the core of the building with everything else around it and will also be seen from many different viewpoints to constantly refer employees back to the think tank for ideas and inspiration. The sense of the think tank being the heart of the company will strongly be suggested through color, circulation, materials and structure.

Concept Statement Using the circulatory system to organize and relate Next’s sensibilities and process of work throughout the space. In the circulatory system, the heart transports and transitions blood, oxygen, nutrients and more to one organ to another to keep us active and well. It is a system that relies on energy, collaboration and most importantly the heart to work. This same process can be related to the Next company.

The think tank serves as the heart of the company where employees come together to brainstorm ideas, inspire one another, think of ways of innovation, collaborate and therefore transport and transition these ideas back to other parts of the company that can help construct their ideas and bring them to life.

The concept of transferring and transition of blood to one organ to another will be seen through color transitioning from one space to another, allowing flow and a sense of progression in the space and of the Next company as a whole.
